Sitting in his cabin hours after leaving port Mike looked down at his phone with a photo of Jai set as his background courtesy of Kate,

smiling sadly he pushed it away and looked across on his peg board where the drawing Jai did for him currently took place

"Sir?" a voice interrupted

"Yep.." he cleared his throat

"Just wanted to check everything was okay, you've been gone for a while"

"I just needed some time.."

"Oh?"

"I asked Kate out on a date" he motioned to his empty rack

"Right.. and what'd she say?" Swain sat on his rack

"Yes"

"And that's not a good thing?"

"We never went on one the first time around, what if we have absolutely nothing to talk about and then there's the whole Ursula problem"

"Ah.. she's still hanging around is she?"

"Calling twice a day" he picked up his phone to show her name lighting up the screen

"Have you tried to, you know.. tell her you're not interested" he teased

"Why do you think she keeps calling" he threw his phone across the desk

"Well you know you could always change your relationship status"

"What too? It's 'complicated' right that's just going to cause more drama"

"And speaking of drama I take it you haven't mentioned the whole other kid thing to Kate" he pointed

"Shit…" Mike dropped his head back "How am I supposed to work that into the conversation?"

"I don't know you could always just ease into it and say 'hey by the way I've got another kid with Commander White'"

"And that's going to blow up big time in my face" he ran his hands through his hair

"And keeping it a secret, will blow up bigger in your face" he shrugged

"And how exactly is she going to take it when I tell her it's with Maxine White the two of them are like this" he crossed his fingers

"Right…"

"And Jai… this would affect him too not just Kate or any potential relationship between us"

"How is Jai coping with finding out you're his Dad?" he questioned

"All of this.. to him it's like no time has passed like he's finally got that Father he always wanted"

"But to you it's like you've missed out on so much"

"I missed his first steps, his first words" he sighed

"Mike…"

"And Kate, she's had to do it all alone how.. how am I supposed to create that kind of bond with Jai"

"You're bond with Jai, it'll be different look Kate's had five years of experience raising him this is all new to you, you've got to give him time"

"I don't know.."

"Boss, you've got a kid think of it that way I mean how amazing is it to know you've created something so incredible" he smiled softy

"He is pretty amazing isn't he"

'CO to the bridge, CO to the bridge'

"Better head back up" Mike sighed moving to stand along with Swain

"Whatever you decide to do I'm sure Kate will understand… I mean technically Ryan was created two years before you even met her" he shrugged

"Yeah.. but that's what I'm worried about"

"Why?" he asked moving out of his cabin

"What if she thinks I cheated and that's why I left the next morning?" he stopped at the bottom of the stairs

"Ah…"

"I don't know if I can tell her, maybe it's better to just call it all off and be there for Jai and only Jai" he went to move up the stairs

"Mike…"

"I better head to the bridge, thanks for the talk" he smiled sadly continuing on his way.

Back in Cairns:

Looking across at Jai who was digging in the sand Kate smiled sadly when a familiar presence stopped next to her

"This is the new job?" he shifted down the sand

"What are you doing here" she pushed a loose piece of hair behind her ear

"Oh well you know.. my ex-girlfriend packs up her apartment takes my kid away it's only natural I'd want to know where you are" he sat next to her

"Jim…"

"Yeah I know why you did it you needed a fresh start and I know Jai isn't mine but that dosen't stop me from loving the little guy"

"You know why we left, it was the right thing to do"

"But without a goodbye? Don't you think I deserved that or at least a chance for Jai to say it"

"Why? So you could break his heart even more, you're the one who left first Jim when that little boy turned four"

"I…"

"And you only did it because you knew he wasn't yours, and that.. that has always been a factor for you even though he was two when we met" she sighed

"Kate…" he reached a hand across

"No.. you had your chance, I've moved on.. so has Jai" she pushed his hand away

"What does that even mean?"

"Jai has finally got that Dad he always wanted, not someone who feels obliged to sticking around but his real Dad" she arose to stand

"You.. you found him?" his eyes widened

"Jai's happy, I'm happy why can't you just leave it at that"

"I raised that little boy from when he was two years old I formed that fatherly bond with him why can't you understand that"

"Because you left!" she yelled looking across at Jai who was still playing in the sand "you left us, you met a woman had an affair with her and you left us not the other way around"

"It was always you Kate.." he moved to stand

"And yet you chose to leave, I'm sorry but there's no future there with us I…"

"You and his Dad?"

"We're seeing where it goes"

"Right, so he sleeps with you, gets you Pregnant and what now he decides to stick around?" he scoffed

"At least he didn't cheat, and as for Jai you know he wasn't aware so don't try and turn this around on him"

"You know I made a mistake, a drunken mistake"

"And that's how Jai was created but at least neither of us had a partner when we did it"

"Please.. at least just let me see him" he asked hopeful

"You had your chance, my job is to protect my little boy and I will not let you walk back into his life just to walk out again" she shook her head

"Where are you living I'll come round we can have dinner, we can talk"

"I don't think so, you have Chloe now and as for anything.. Jai and I are no longer your concern"

"Kate.." he reached out again

"Goodbye Jim" she moved towards Jai blocking his view he watched her pick him up and move further down the beach.

(Sorry its only a short update!

Things here have been a bit hectic, had to unfortunately put my cat down (whom I called Monkey, which is where I got the nickname idea from for this story) he had a tumour pressing on his lungs which was affecting his breathing, so it's been pretty tuff to write let alone function during the day.

In this story Jim isnt like he was in the show so he's not in the SAS or meeting through an internet date, he was someone she met through a friend they dated and then he cheated.. just need to add some drama,oh and thank Headinclouds1 for giving me so many ideas to add drama!
