"Kate don't walk away from me!" he followed after her
"Jim!" Jai wriggled in her arms
"Hey Mr Monkey" he smiled widely
"What do you want?" she turned to face him
"I want you!"
"Well it's too late"
"Mummy and Daddy are giving me a brother!" Jai piped up
"Is that…"
"No!" Kate interrupted him
"But.."
"Jai, go play" Kate placed him back down on the sand
"I…"
"Stay where I can see you" she pointed to the small dune
"Bye Jim!" he waved running off
"What do you want" she sighed annoyed
"I told you, I want you"
"And yet I seem to remember six months ago you didn't so" she shrugged
"I was drunk it meant nothing"
"And yet again the woman you got Pregnant would disagree"
"How is this any different then what you did?"
"Excuse me?"
"Oh come on"
"You seriously think that is the same?" she stepped forward
"You were drunk the night you got Pregnant to him"
"I wasn't in a relationship when it happened!"
"Kate…"
"A two-year relationship!"
"Kate come on…"
"And the only reason I found out is because she showed up the house looking for you!" she pushed him back
"It was a mistake, it never meant anything to me"
"Then why do it!" she pushed him again
"Will you stop!" he grabbed her arms pulling her flush against him their faces hovering in front of one another's
"Let go of me…"
"What we had was special, and I feel extremely horrible about the way things ended"
"We were engaged Jim, didn't that ever occur to you or was it just a chance to wet your whistle before being settled down" she tried to move out of his grip
"Of course I did, I love you I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you it's why I proposed"
"Yes, straight after you slept with her" she looked up at him sadly
"Tell me now, tell me honestly that after two years together you don't still have feelings for me" he brushed a piece of hair behind her ear
"I have absolutely no feelings towards you whatsoever" she stated bluntly
"You don't mean that.."
"Yes.. yes I do" she pulled his hand off from her cheek
"You still love me, and one way or another I'm going to prove that" he began leaning down
"What are you doing?" she pulled her head back
"Well I was.."
"Not going to happen" she placed her hand on his chest and pushed him back
"Tell me.. have you already slept with him?" he stood his ground
"What?"
"Jai's so called Father, have you slept with him?"
"I don't think that's any of your business" she crossed her arms
"You really think some stranger can be a better father to him then I was?"
"He was never yours"
"Maybe not, but who was there for the late nights, the toilet training, the learning to ride a bike"
"You never loved him, it always pained you that he was someone else's don't pretend to play the doting father now" she shook her head
"All I'm saying is I was there he wasn't, why would he decide to stick around now?" he shrugged
"You're a bastard you know that?" she stepped forward
"Well at least I'm not a slut" he replied watching as her hand rose and she slapped him across the cheek
"Stay away from me, and stay away from my son" she turned to walk away
"Kate, I'm sorry I didn't…" he held his cheek
"To think I actually loved you" she took a last look at him before moving over to Jai and continuing up the beach with his hand in hers
"Is Jim moving back with us?" Jai questioned taking a glance back at him
"No Monkey, he was.. he was just saying goodbye" she tried to hide her tears
"Did he hurt you again because if you need cuddles like last time" he looked up at her
"Oh baby.." she stopped moving to knell in front of him a tear fell down her cheek,
reaching out he wiped it away and rested his hand there
"He's a jerk, you and Daddy should get together" he grinned wrapping his arms around her in a hug
"I love you Monkey, and having you is all I really need right now" she hugged him tight arising to stand with him in her arms
"I love you too Mummy, but if you and Daddy don't get together I won't get a brother" he pulled his head back
"Oh you are a cheeky Monkey"
"Better a cheeky Monkey then a naughty one" he giggled
"That's right Mr Monkey and for being so good how about we go get some ice cream?" she brushed her hand through his curls
"Yes! Um do you think Daddy has ice cream on his boat?"
"I don't know Monkey, but I tell you what when he gets home you can ask him"
"I want him home now" he sighed resting his head back on her shoulder
"Yeah me-too Monkey, me too" she smiled sadly walking towards the footpath.
2 Days Later:
Walking along the boat deck Mike looked around in confusion to see Jai standing near the gangway saluting the sailors as they made their way off the boat
"Hi Daddy!" he giggled when Mike moved across the gangway
"Hi Mr Monkey" he leaned down lifting him up
"Did you eat ice cream?"
"What?" he grinned slightly
"Mummy said I could ask you when you got home if you get ice cream on your boat"
"Unfortunately not this time Mr Monkey" he shook his head
"I've got some at home you can have!" he giggled
"Ah.. where's your Mum Monkey?" he questioned looking around
"At work" he pointed towards NAVCOM
"So how'd…"
"Maxine brought me!" he jumped slightly when Maxine stopped next to them
"Mike" she nodded
"Ma'am…"
"I do believe you have some explaining to do" she crossed her arms looking at Jai then back at him
"Ah…"
"Daddy didn't get ice cream Maxine!" Jai piped up through the awkward silence
"Well we'll have to change that won't we Monkey" she grinned
"Then he can have ice cream like me!"
"So Daddy, a meeting my office fifteen minutes?"
"Yes Ma'am" he nodded
"Good, I'll let you take Mr Monkey back to his Mother shall I?" she moved aside
"Ah.. thank you Ma'am" he cleared his throat moving forward
"Oh by the way" she called stopping him
"Yes?"
"Does Kate know about…"
"No Ma'am, I haven't exactly had the time or.."
"No need for explanations just maybe do it soon I get the feeling a certain someone will want to meet his new brother" she whispered the last part, so Jai didn't hear
"Yes… I do get the feeling your right there" he looked down at Jai who was resting his head on his shoulder "Remember fifteen minutes" she tapped her watch
"I'll be there" he replied before continuing to walk off towards NAVCOM.
...
"Knock, knock" he stood in her doorway
"Whatever Jai has done this time I'll pay for it" she didn't look up from her paperwork
"Apart from being the cutest kid there isn't anything I could think of" he smirked when she looked up
"I'm sorry, I thought you were one of the juniors Jai seems to be teasing them an awful lot lately" she closed her folder
"And yet they seemed so pleased when I left him with them"
"You didn't?" she moved to stand
"Oh yeah, he's currently trying to woo all the ladies" he turned to point out at the main area
"What?" she stopped next to him to take a look
"I mean with such a beautiful Mum it's only natural he'd be a good looking kid" he looked down at her
"Oh please" she rolled her eyes when Jai shifted to sit on the table
"I mean it could be his Father, he does have the Flynn charm"
"The what?" she turned to look at him
"Don't knock it McGregor it's a real thing"
"And somehow I just don't see it in you" she shrugged moving back to her desk
"Ouch that wounds me" he playfully hit his chest
"Hmm-and here I was thinking you were a big tuff Navy guy" she hummed leaning against her desk
"Tuff yes but I also have a gooey centre"
"Really?" she grinned when he stopped in front of her
"Absolutely" he began leaning in,
her eyes twinkling as they met his, their lips almost touching when Jai came running in
"Mummy!" his voice yelled pulling them apart
"Yes Monkey" she cleared her throat when Mike moved aside
"Daddy didn't get ice cream on his ship" he sulked
"Is that right?" she looked across at Mike
"Oh absolutely it was so heartbreaking" he wiped an imaginary tear off his cheek
"Don't cry Daddy!" he moved across wrapping his arms around his waist
"It's just so sad Mr Monkey" he knelt down in front of him
"It's okay" Jai patted his shoulder
"You are such a tease" Kate shook her head when Jai pulled Mike's hands off his face
"Daddy!" he shook his head at noticing no tears
"Haha" he grinned moving in and tickling him
"No!" he giggled trying to squirm out of his grip
"Ah excuse me Lieutenant Commander" Maxine cleared her throat from the doorway
"Yes?" he moved to stand
"When you're ready" she motioned towards her office
"Yes Ma'am" he nodded when she walked away
"You better…" Kate moved back around her desk to sit down
"Ah Jai… can you go see Max and tell her I'll be there shortly there's something I need to discuss with your Mum" he ruffled his curls
"Okay" he grinned running out of her office.
"So what's so important it can't wait?" Kate looked across when he sat down
"There's something I need to tell you…"
"Okay?" she began writing in the folder
"Kate…" his hands came to rest on hers stopping her
"Is everything okay?" she dropped the pen
"I… I have a son" he looked at her nervously
"You mean Jai?"
"No… I mean I have another son he's eight and his Mother well… his Mother is Maxine"
"Maxine… as in?" her eyes widened
"It was eight years ago we both agreed it was a mistake and it meant nothing, but it resulted in a son…"
"With Maxine" she pulled her hands back
"Yes…"
"Why… why are you telling me this?"
"Well I thought.. if this were to go further I thought you needed to know" he looked at her in confusion
"When we… were you two together or?"
"No, it was just the once"
"So you didn't cheat…"
"I was very much single" he nodded
"Single with a two-year-old kid" she scoffed moving to stand
"Kate…"
"I think you should go" she turned her back to him
"Are we still on for tonight?" he blurted out
"I don't think…"
"Kate…" he whispered now standing behind her
"I just.. I need some time to process this…" she turned her head slightly
"I'll give you as much time as needed" he moved forward placing a kiss on her cheek
she closed her eyes at the contact before feeling him move back and exit her office.
