"You look like hell" Maxine grinned when he entered her office
"Believe me, I feel it" he sighed sitting across from her
"Daddy look" Jai moved around the desk holding out his hand of lollies
"Why don't you go see if Mummy wants some of those"
"Mummy dosen't eat lollies" he shook his head
"Well why don't you go back to see her anyway"
"Okay" he nodded running out of the office,
"So…" Maxine looked at him confused
"I told her about Ryan.." he fiddled with her stress ball on the end of her desk
"Right.. I didn't think you were going to say anything just yet.."
"Dosen't matter now there may not be a future there"
"She said that did she?"
"Not in so many words no"
"Then what are you doing in here? Go talk to her!" she pointed
"All due respect Max I'm here for a debrief not here to discuss my personal life"
"Mike…"
"If you want to talk about my failed attempt at getting to know the Mother of my child in a romantic sense I'll walk out this office right now"
"Okay.. but just so you know, I'm still babysitting Jai tonight" she shrugged
"So?"
"So? Maybe it'll give you two a chance to talk without prying ears"
"And how do you know she won't cancel given the information she's just been told?" he shifted forward in his chair
"Woman intuition given what she's just found out I believe she's probably going to spend the night with a glass of wine"
"I somehow sense her as more of a scotch kind of woman"
"Hmm-speaking from experience are we?" she watched him take a glance through the window across at Kate's office
"Of sorts" he cleared his throat
"Shall we get on with this debrief?" she opened up the folder on her desk
"Yes" he placed the stress ball back down on her desk.
...
"Well aren't we a little spoilt" Kate turned in her chair when Jai entered placing his handful of lollies on her desk
"Mummy?" he stopped next to her chair
"Yep?" she placed her pen down to look at him
"Can I still go over to Maxine's tonight for a sleepover?"
"Monkey…"
"Please, I know you and Daddy aren't talking but…"
"Come here" she held out her arms for him to move into her lap
"Did you guys have a fight?" he placed an arm around her neck
"Listen Jai…"
"What'd I do?" he began earing up
"Why would you say that?"
"Because you always call me Monkey unless I've done something wrong…" he played with her name tag
"You haven't done anything wrong, I just wanted to talk.." she began brushing her hand through his curls
"Okay…" he looked at her sadly
"How… you can still go to Maxine's if you want" she changed her mind the minute he looked up at her
"Really?" his eyes widened
"But you have to be on your best behaviour and listen to whatever she says"
"I promise!" he giggled
"I know you will" she kissed his forehead before pulling him into a hug
her eyes drifting and connecting slightly with Mikes when he walked past towards the exit.
Standing in the kitchen hours later just after 7pm Kate looked around the house sighing at the silence when a small tapping moved down the hallway
"Hey ol girl" she smiled when Dipsy entered the room
"It's pretty quiet around here hey" she moved to sit down on the floor,
reaching out a hand she brushed it across Dipsy's head when she dropped across her legs nuzzling her head against Kate's stomach something she always used to do when she was Pregnant with Jai
looking at her sadly Kate continued to run her fingers through her fur when a knock at the door echoed through the house
"Come in!" she yelled not exactly being able to move
"Kate?" his voice replied down the hall
"Shit…" she whispered looking down at Dipsy
"Hi…" he stopped in the doorway
"Hi" she refused to look up at him
"So ah this is your plans for the night?" he grinned
"Didn't have a better offer" she shrugged
"Mind.. mind if I join you?" he stepped forward
"Sure" she continued to pat Dipsy when she felt him sit next to her
"You weren't returning my calls" he rested his back against the bench
"I thought we cancelled tonight"
"Kate…"
"You said all you had to earlier"
"Your mad…"
"Mike… what we had was one night who or what you do in your personal life really has nothing to do with me" she sighed
"And here I was thinking we were.. you know.." he cleared his throat
"Did you know?" she looked across at him
"You mean.."
"Look… Jai didn't grow up with a Dad and maybe that's my fault but if you did it deliberately to another kid.."
"I knew, I was there when he was born, there for pretty much everything.."
"Right" she nodded when Dipsy moved off her legs and walked back up the hall to Jai's room
"When Maxine moved to Canberra I kept in contact through phone calls and video chats if I had of known about Jai I would have…"
"So it's my fault now?" she brushed the hair off her pants
"No that's not what I.."
"I just want what's best for my son.. our son…"
"Kate… I like you, and Jai he's an extraordinary kid I just want to get to know him and I want to see where this could go"
"You like me?" she grinned slightly
"Yes even if you do cause me so many headaches in one day" he nudged her arm
"I'm sorry… I just.. I needed time to wrap my head around all this" she reached across placing a hand on his thigh
"You don't need to apologise"
"I mean you have another kid, Jai he has a brother"
"Yeah, I suppose he does" he placed his hand across hers
"And as for anything else.. I might like you too" she nudged him back
"Even with my pigheadedness?" he smirked
"Well now you mention it"
"What about the Flynn charm"
"Well…" a small smile creeping onto her face
"I knew it, see you just can't resist me"
"Is that what you think is it?" she shifted
"Oh yeah a hundred percent" he pulled her into his lap her knees digging into the cold floor
"Mike…" her breath hitched when his hands rested around her waist
"I'm sorry I never stuck around all those years ago.. I just thought.. I thought leaving was the right thing we didn't exactly know each other and.." he stopped when she leaned in kissing him slightly before pulling away
"Will you leave again?" she bit her bottom lip
"You mean?"
"Well…"
"I won't leave" he shook his head
"I know we agreed to wait but.."
"I won't leave" he leaned back in hesitating slightly when Kate pulled back
"We do have the house to ourselves" she teased
"Hmm-so we do" he ran his hands under the back of her shirt
"This fabric must be super itchy against your skin" her fingers began undoing the buttons on his shirt
"Oh very" he grinned moving his head back in and kissing her passionately,
his hands tightening around her back and running further across her waist.
Rolling over Kate's hand came into contact with his chest a small smile creeping onto her face when she felt him interlock his hand with hers kissing the back of it
"That was…"
"Yeah" she laughed softly
"Was it that good the first time?" he looked across at her
"Now which time are we talking about, the one when Jai was created or.."
"Oh Ha-ha"
"Thank you…" she rested on her stomach the blanket draped across her back
"What for?"
"I know… I know it was a weird request but…"
"Kate, as weird as it was I mean it was pretty amazing" he grinned
"Slow and steady wins the race right?"
"Absolutely" he shifted to lay on his side resting his head next to hers,
reaching across Kate placed a hand on his cheek brushing her thumb continuously across his cheek
"So does this mean I'm your girlfriend now?" she teased
"Girlfriend does have a pretty nice ring to it"
"Sounds so old fashioned"
"So what I should call you my booty call?" he laughed when a hand came into contact with his chest
"If that's all you think I'm good for"
"At least this time I stuck around"
"I have all the right to kick you out of my bed for that comment" she shook her head
"What bed? Technically we didn't make it that far" he looked around the lounge where they were laying on the cushions
"Okay so I could still kick you out of my house" she went to move her hand off his cheek when his quickly came to rest across hers
"Don't stop"
"Your such a softy" she rolled her eyes and continued brushing his cheek with her thumb
"Kate… after pretty much spending most of the night doing relationship activities if I were to ask you to be my girlfriend would the answer be yes?"
"Mmm-no"
"What!" his eyes widened
"I'm just kidding" she smirked
"Your such a tease" he shook his head
"Ehh" she shrugged shifting forward meeting his lips in a slow kiss
"God your beautiful" he whispered when she pulled back
"And your just a pain in the arse" she teased giggling slightly when he got the upper hand and pinned her back into the cushion
"Is that so?" he began kissing along her neck
"I'm hungry.." she brushed her hand across the back of his neck
"I'm kissing your neck and all you can think about is food?" he pulled back
"Dosen't pizza sound good right about now?"
"Pizza or sex Mmm-no I can't choose" he grinned
"How about pizza, some relaxing and then maybe if your lucky" she moved her head up and kissed his cheek
"I'll call the pizza place" he shifted back reaching for his pants
"That's what I thought" she laughed softly resting her head against the cushion her eyes beginning to drift closed
"What kind of pi…" he took a look back at her a small smile resting on his face when he noticed her eyes closed and a soft snore coming from her.
