"Thank you" Mike smiled when they exited the pub
"Whatever for?"
"I know meeting people you don't know can be hard, especially Navy Sailors" he turned to look at her
"Well I seemed to do alright with you didn't I?" she teased
"It's not often the crew accept anyone new into the group and.. well I just wanted to say I appreciate you making the effort to get to know them"
"I can see how much they mean to you, even that 2Dads fella" she smirked fixing up his jacket
"Believe me it took a while to get there he was a smartarse when he first arrived" he brushed the loose hair behind her ear
"And somehow I get the feeling that you would be sad if he wasn't apart of the crew"
"Please do not tell him that" Mike smirked wrapping his arm across her shoulder and moving them to walk
"Your secret is safe with me" she moved her arm behind his back walking with him along the path
"I can't have my crew knowing I'm not as stern as I seem to be"
"I'm pretty sure they already know" she poked his side
"There goes my Mighty title" he shook his head
"What?" she laughed stopping them to look at him
"So I may have forgotten to mention I have a certain 'reputation' in the Navy"
"And this reputation it's…"
"Mighty Mike Flynn" he nodded
"Really? Because I heard from Swain it was a cowboy reputation" she tried to hide her smirk
"I am going to have him mopping out the heads for a very long time"
"I've heard you use the 'no cowboys on my ship' a lot and yet" she motioned up and down him
"Wow…" he walked towards her with a grin
"Now Mike, we really should be getting to dinner" she smirked holding her hand out jumping a little with her back came into contact with the wall
"Dinner can wait" he stopped in front of her his hand resting against the wall next to her head
"We… we have a reservation.." she swallowed nervously when he began leaning in
"Thank you Kate.." he whispered resting his forehead against hers surprising her
"You said that already" she smiled
"Not for making my life better I haven't" he moved his head back to look at her his hand moving off the wall and coming to rest against the side of her neck
"You made mine better before you even knew it"
"Jai.." he ran his thumb across her cheekbone she nodded slightly a small smile creeping onto his face when he leaned in kissing her softly,
running her hand along his chest she sighed softly when he pulled back
"Come on, lets head to dinner" he moved back holding his hand out
"And who was it that said dinner can wait?" she raised an eyebrow interlocking her hand with his
"Well if we don't eat dinner then their won't be any dessert" he teased
"Hmm" she hummed feeling him squeeze her hand as they began walking towards the pier restaurant.
One Month later:
"Morning Mr Monkey" she smiled
"Guess what Jen" he grinned entering the Kinder with his Mum
"What's that?" she looked over the desk
"I'm five today!" he held his hand up
"That can't be right"
"Yeah, it's my birthday isn't Mummy?" he looked up at Kate
"Yes Monkey now why don't you go put your bag in your cubby" she let his hand go
"Okay!" he grinned taking the bag off her and running down the small hall
"So Mr Monkey the big five hmm" Jen smiled at Kate
"Please don't remind me, how do they grow up so fast?" Kate signed into the book
"Clara has set up the play room for a little birthday lunch so hopefully it'll be a good day for him
"Thank you Jen, I know he wasn't supposed to be coming in today but.."
"Hey, we get it in the Navy you can't pick and choose when you work"
"His Father was supposed to have him today but he got called out early last night" she placed the pen down
"Kate don't stress we love Mr Monkey here you know that"
"Yeah look I finish at five but if his Dad is back by four he'll come and pick him up" Kate smiled when Jai ran back towards her
"I've got to go now Mummy, Willow wants me to play"
"Willow?" she knelt in front of him
"Willow is Jai's girlfriend" Jen teased
"Ahh" Kate smirked
"No she's not!" he huffed
"No kissy facing mister you're way to young" Kate wrapped her arms around him in a hug
"You and Daddy do enough of that already, it's yuck" he pulled back
"Daddy will be here to pick you up at four-thirty"
"Come on Jai!" a little voice called down the hall
"Bye Mummy!" he ran towards the voice,
arising to stand Kate looked across at Jen who was adorning a wide smile
"What?"
"Kissy face?" she smirked
"I better go, I've got an early meeting" she looked down at her watch
"Not a problem, we'll make sure there's no kissy face with Jai and Willow" she nodded
"Very funny look thanks again for fitting him in"
"Hey he goes to school next year we want him for as long as we can" she smiled
"Yeah, thanks Jen" Kate moved towards the exit
"See ya" she waved.
...
Running through the open area Kate skidded into her office throwing her hat down
"Jai get off to Kindy okay?" her voice startled her
"Ma'am.." she held her chest
"Kate relax you're only.." she looked down at her watch "two minutes late, come on"
"It's just been a hectic morning" she sighed leaning against her desk
"It's only eleven am"
"Exactly, Jai decided he wanted Pancakes for breakfast and I'm not exactly the chef type so…"
"It was a disaster?" Maxine smirked sitting down
"Extremely, Mike can whip up the most delicious pancakes and I can't even cook a cake without burning it" she laughed sitting next to her
"So I take it you're not making Jai's birthday cake?"
"Definitely not, Mike's picking one up once he gets back in"
"And things are going well for you?" she questioned
"Ma'am…"
"Technically not you're Ma'am yet, I don't officially start for another ten minutes" she rested her elbow on her chair
"Unofficially then.. things with Mike are slow"
"Slow? What does that even mean?" Maxine grinned
"I don't know myself; it's been a month since…"
"You declared your undying love for one another"
"Yes thank you for that" Kate rolled her eyes
"So what's the problem?"
"I don't know it just seems since the whole ex debacle he thinks I'm using him as a rebound"
"I thought you guys sorted that?"
"So did I! but when he's hanging around like a bad smell, calling once a day sending threatening letters to Mike"
"Have you gone to the Police?" Maxine questioned
"They can't do anything unless they believe he's a real threat a bunch of jealous messages isn't enough to warrant it 'dangerous'"
"Sounds like a psycho"
"Max he knows where I live, where Mike lives I guess I'm just afraid he's planning something and that's why he's sticking around"
"Have you spoken to Mike about your concerns?"
"Yeah…" Kate laughed softly moving to stand again "He dosen't think it's anything to be worried about"
"Maybe he's right" Maxine shrugged
"Then why is he insisting on wanting to move in?"
"Wow… I didn't think it was that far in the relationship.."
"Who moves in together after a month of dating?" Kate crossed her arms
"Who has a kid after sleeping together once?" Maxine teased
"You did too" Kate raised an eyebrow
"Touché" she grinned arising to stand
"He has to be planning something, what it is.. I've got no clue"
"Look.. I know with Hammersley getting crash sailed a lot its hard to have a conversation with Mike, but he gets in at I wanna say four, but I'll have to check the books why don't you meet him at the docks go for a coffee?"
"Because I'm stuck here, and Mike is supposed to pick Jai up at four-thirty"
"Right…" Maxine sighed watching Kate move around her desk
"Look I appreciate you trying to help as a friend but this really… maybe it's just not destined to be after all" she shrugged picking up a few folders
"Kate…"
"I've got to get to a meeting" she smiled sadly moving out of her office,
sighing softly to herself Maxine took a quick glance at the framed photo Kate had on her desk of her and Mike shaking her head she pulled out her mobile and exited Kate's office.
Standing in her office doorway just after 5 Mike smiled softly when he watched her brush a piece of hair behind her ear
"Working hard?"
"Mike?" she looked across at him in confusion
"Where's Jai?" he looked around moving into her office
"What do you mean, you were supposed to pick him up"
"No.. Maxine was?" he raised an eyebrow when Kate moved out of her chair
"What?"
"She called this morning said she'd pick him up so we could get a coffee" he pulled his hat off
"First I'm hearing of it" she crossed her arms
"Because it was supposed to be a surprise" he stepped in front of her
"And why would you need to do that?"
"Well it's come to my attention I've been pushing you away a little…" he threw his hat on her desk
"A little?"
"Okay so a lot… I'm sorry" he reached out pulling her close,
leaning down he hesitated his lips in front of hers when she rested her hands against his shoulders
"Hey I thought the deal was for me to pick Jai up?" Maxine's voice interrupted
"It was" Mike moved back turning to face her
"So why did I get there and be told his Father already picked him up?"
"I didn't, I just got in ten minutes ago" he looked at her confused
"You don't think…" Kate looked at Maxine sadly
"Jim…" Mike huffed
"I'll call the cops" Maxine ran towards the open area
"Why.."
"Hey, we'll find them they can't have gone far"
"Mike he's just a little kid" she teared up
"Kate.." he placed a hand on her arm
"I knew he was up to something but this it's.."
"We'll find them" he pulled her into a hug
"Why would he do something like this" she gripped the back of his shirt
"I don't know, but we will get him back I promise" he tried to hold it together for Kate.
