"What'd the cops say?" Kate pulled away from Mike when Maxine entered a few minutes later
"They can't do anything…"
"What?"
"He's only been missing for an hour and for all they know it could be his Father"
"Maxine this psycho has kidnapped my son" Mike snapped
"And I understand that but I'm just telling you what the police told me" she held her hand up
"Didn't the Kinder question it?" Kate sighed
"Apparently you had said his Dad was picking him up and they were yet to meet Mike so.."
"This is ridiculous!" Mike picked up his hat
"Where are you going?"
"To find this bastard and get our son back" he exited Kate's office in a hurry
"Mike!" Kate yelled after him
"Kate…" Maxine looked at her sadly
"He's taken.. I knew he was up to something I.."
"I'm so sorry"
"I'll head home maybe.. maybe he's gone there" Kate began collecting her things pausing slightly when a message pinged through her phone
"Kate.. you should stay here just in.."
"I can't sit here and do nothing" she read over the text placing her phone back in her pocket
"No that's not what.."
"I'm sorry, I have to go" Kate looked at her sadly before exiting her office,
entering the stairwell Kate placed the phone next to her ear waiting for it to answer,
"What do you want?" she began walking down the stairs
"There's only ever one thing I wanted"
"And you thinking taking my son will give that to you?"
"Come on Katie, I didn't have to take him he came willingly" he laughed
"If you hurt him…" she fixed the bag on her shoulder
"I would never hurt him"
"Let me talk to him" she entered the carpark
"Now Kate…"
"I want to talk to my son" she snapped digging around in her bag for her keys
"Hello?"
"Jai, it's Mummy" she tried to hold back the tears while unlocking the car and moving inside
"Mummy, Jim brought me ice cream" he giggled
"That's great Monkey, are you okay?" she pushed her keys in the ignition
"I'm tired"
"I know baby" she tried to hold back her tears
"Where's Daddy?" he sniffled
"Daddy's looking for you Monkey, we both are"
"We're on a boat and…" he began saying before Jim's voice was heard
"Kate now really? Using your son to find out where we are, that's low" Jim muffled into the phone
"What do you want?" she repeated
"You"
"What?" she scoffed
"I want you as my wife Kate"
"I…"
"You've got twenty-four hours; I'll be waiting for your call"
"Please… he's only five…"
"Do as I say, and we can be a happy family again" he replied the phone line going dead seconds after
'Dammit' she huffed throwing her phone onto the passenger seat and turning on the car,
her mind running overtime while she pulled out of the underground car park.
Sitting at the coffee table half an hour later Kate tapped her fingernails annoyingly on the table when he walked through the front door
"I got you text, any news?" he placed his hat down when he entered the kitchen
"Jai's on a boat, where I don't know, which boat I don't know that either" she looked across at him
"Why am I sensing a but..." he kept his distance
"He's given me a ultimatum"
"Ultimatum? You mean Jim?" he questioned when she nodded
"He.. he contacted you?"
"After you left NAVCOM he messaged me" she moved to stand holding out her mobile for him
"What?" he took it reading over the text
"You've got to be joking?" he pushed the phone across the bench
"Mike…"
"You are not going back to this psychopath Kate he kidnapped our son that is not love"
"If you just…"
"Just what?"
"He's given me twenty-four hours to decide.." she took a deep breath
"Decide? Decide what exactly?"
"You read the text I'm sure you can work that one out for yourself" she went to move past him
"'I love you, do as I say or you'll never see Jai again' isn't exactly giving insight into what's going on Kate" he grabbed her arm stopping her
"Mike, don't make this any harder.."
"You can't seriously be thinking of doing what he asks"
"Jai is the most important thing in my life"
"What about me, about us…"
"If leaving you for Jim is the only way I will get him back then I will do what I have to" she pulled her arm out of his grip
"So that's it?"
"I'm sorry…"
"This is ridiculous! I will get Jai back; I will bring him home" he kept his back to her when she stopped in the doorway
"There's no other way"
"Yes, yes there is you pretend"
"What?"
"Pretend you'll do what he says" he turned to face her
"Mike" she shook her head when he came to stand behind her
"Please don't do this" he brushed his hand along her arm
"I don't love you, I don't…" she sighed
"So it was all a lie?" he stepped back in surprise
"You need to leave"
"Yeah.. seems that is the best before you say something else you regret" he picked up his hat from the bench
"I'm sorry…" she teared up watching him walk towards the front door
"Tell me now Kate…" he put his hand on the doorhandle, turning his head to look at her "did you ever love me?"
"No…"
"Good to know" he nodded exiting her house and slamming the door behind him,
taking a deep breath she let the tears fall as she dropped to the floor in an emotional wreak her tears not stopping at Mike's pained expression imprinted in her brain
knowing that lying to him was the only way to her get son back safe even if it meant breaking her own heart and Mike's in the progress.
