After the attack on Midgard between the Avengers and Ultron, Thor was walking in the new Avengers corridors with Steve and Tony on either side of him.
"The rules have changed," Steve explained.
"We're dealing with something new," Tony added.
"Well, the Vision's artificial intelligence," Steve prompted.
"A machine," Tony corrected.
"So, it doesn't count," Steve smirked, the same as Thor.
"No," Tony defended. "Its not like a person lifting a hammer."
"Right," Steve smiled. "Different rules for us."
"Nice guy, but artificial," Tony remarked.
"Thank you," Steve agreed.
"If he can wield the hammer, he can keep the Mind stone," Thor interjected. "Its safe with Vision and these days, safe is in short supply."
"But if you put the hammer in an elevator," Steve implied.
"It would still go up," Tony answered in a matter of fact.
"Elevators not worthy," Steve was baffled.
"I'm going to miss our little talks of ours," Thor was a bit sadden.
"Well, not if you don't leave," Tony was trying to convince him.
The three headed out through an opening that led to a grassy field.
"I have no choice," Thor explained. "The Mind stone is the fourth of the Infinity Stones to show up in the last few years. That's not a coincidence. Someone has been playing an intricate game and has made pawns of us. But once all of these pieces are in position."
"Triple Yahtzee," Tony added.
"You think you can find out what's coming?" Steve was worried. He wanted to ask about Sigyn, maybe her mind could lend a hand.
"I do," Thor smiled. "Besides this one," he tapped Tony. "There's nothing that can be explained." Thor lifted his hammer above the air and the rainbow bridge floated around him, etching the symbol into the grass. He left them.
Tony and Steve started to walk away.
Thor was going back to Asgard but decided against it. He needed to find the other Infinity Stones. He went to the places where he last knew they were at, according to the stories told by his mother and father. He did not find anything or rather, he felt that they were safe for the moment.
He kept thinking about the vision, where he is back in Asgard, Heimdall wearing a black cloak, telling him that he would lead Asgard to Hel, before strangling him. Thor telling Heimdall that he could save him. Heimdall saying that all of them were dead and he was the bringer of it, how his power brings destruction. Thor even had recurring dreams about Asgard up in flames. A giant monster of flame just laying waste of all Asgard.
The guilt from the vision and dreams, had Thor stop trying to find the Infinity Stones. This lurking vision was more important. He needed to figure out why those visions. The destruction of Asgard. It felt familiar to him. He was remembering flashbacks of the stories Odin had told him, Loki pointing out the importance of history, and Sigyn was more of a relic instead of a person, a weapon of destruction. Thor knew where he had to go, a place that may have answers.
On his way there, he had heard about the destruction and death coming from Muspelheim. He headed straight there only to be caught. He was placed in a cage, to keep himself sane, he spoke to the other prisoner, a skeleton.
Surtur brought Thor down to speak with him.
"Thor, son of Odin," Surtur spoke to the Asgardian tethered by a chain.
"Surtur, son of a bitch, you're still alive!" Thor exclaimed. "I thought my father killed you a half a million years ago."
"I cannot die!" Surtur corrected. "Not until I fulfill my destiny and lay waste to your home."
"Its funny you should mention that," Thor explained. "Because I have been having these terrible dreams of late. Asgard up in flames, falling to ruins, and you, Surtur, are at the center of all of them."
Surtur was intrigued. This is the second Asgardian who had come to him about these visions. "Then you have seen Ragnarök, the fall of Asgard. The great prophecy." He dropped his sentence as he watched Thor turn around.
"Hang on, hang on," Thor was trying to move around. "I'll be back shortly." Surtur wondered if he felt like a dunce or it was second embarrassment from Thor. "I really feel like we were connecting there." He rotated back to see him. "Okay, so Ragnarök. Tell me about that. Walk me through it."
Thor and Surtur continue their discussion about Ragnarök until Thor can no longer take the monologue. Especially the part where Odin was no longer on Asgard. He had listened to all what he needed. Thor brought the hammer to him and fought against Surtur. Fire demons started to swarm around him. He called Heimdall to pick him up.
However, Heimdall was no longer there. Skurge was his replacement and Skurge was impressing two maidens. Skurge was showing off all his trinkets he had gathered.
Thor was running around, trying to fend for his life, calling for Heimdall but still no response. A dragon came out, Thor was fighting with it, still trying to call for Heimdall.
One of the ladies had noticed, the sword glowing. Skurge, believing it must have been the Warriors Three, he moved the sword to bring in the head of a dragon and Thor. The dragon drenched the two ladies whilst scaring them. They ran away.
Skurge tried to keep them here. "Girls! Well, well, well. Look who decided to pop in. Thanks for scaring away my company and drenching my workplace in brains."
"Who are you?" Thor did not care about that.
"Don't you remember? I'm Skurge," he felt offended. "We fought together in Vanaheim."
"Right," Thor nodded. "Where is Heimdall?"
"That traitor," Skurge explained. "No one knows. He's a fugitive of the throne."
Thor believed that was not right and it was due to someone else's doing. "Traitor?" Thor asked.
"Yeah," Skurge continued. "You see, Odin charged Heimdall with negligence of duty, but he disappeared before the trial. Hard to catch a guy who can see everything in the universe."
"Sure." Thor was tired of that conversation as well. He spun his hammer to make him fly to the palace.
"Hold on," Skurge tried to stop him. "I am supposed to announce your arrival." Thor flies off. Skurge thought about how terrible of job he had just done and started to jog after him.
Thor did not find Odin in the palace itself. He headed off to where a small group of people were gathered. He looked up to see a golden statue of Loki. "What the hell is that?" He watched a play being performed. He scrutinized the players who portrayed him, Loki, and Odin. It was a scene all too familiar. He eyed his father relaxed and carefree while watching the scene of Loki's death.
"Bravo! Bravo! Well done!" Odin praised. "Bravo!"
"Father," Thor called.
"Oh shit!" He muttered. "Uh, my son, Thor, has returned! Greetings, my boy!" Where is that damned, Skurge? This is not how I had this planned reunion.
"It's an interesting play. What's it called?" Thor mocked.
Odin answered. "The Tragedy of Loki of Asgard. The people wanted to commemorate him."
"Ah, indeed they should," Thor was on to him. "Oh, I like the statue. A lot better looking than he was when he was alive, though. A little… a little less weasely, less greasy, maybe." Thor showed him the skull of Surtur. "Do you know what this is?
Odin became intrigued. "Oh, the skull of Surtur. That's a formidable weapon!"
"Do me a favor. Lock this away in a vault so it doesn't turn into a giant monster and destroy the whole planet," Thor spoke to one of the guards.
"Thank you, dear," Odin spoke to the servant who took his fruit. "Un, so it's back to Midgard for you, is it?"
"Nope, I've been having this reoccurring dream lately. Every night, I see Asgard fall into ruins," Thor watched Odin's face as he responded.
"That's just a silly dream, signs of an overactive imagination," Odin tried to hurry him along. Dreams? This could be the same fear Sigyn had for staying in our home.
"Possibly," Thor implored. "But then I decide to go out there and investigate. And what do I find, but the Nine Realms completely in chaos. Enemies of Asgard assembling, plotting our demise, all while you, Odin, the protector of those Nine Realms, are sitting here in your bathrobe, eating grapes."
"Yes, well, it is best to respect our neighbors' freedom," Loki wasn't prepared for that remark. He could only try to keep winging it as Odin the best he could. He did not like surprises.
"Yes, of course, the freedom to be massacred," Thor continued.
"Yes, besides I've been rather busy myself," he defended.
Thor looked around, "watching theater."
"Well, board meetings, and security council meetings," Loki trailed off.
"You're really gonna make me do it?" Thor could not believe his brother.
"Do what?" Loki was still trying to keep his bluff.
Thor throws Mjolnir out into the air. "You know that nothing will stop Mjolnir as it returns to my hand. Not even your face." He grabbed Odin and placed him in front.
"You've gone quite mad," Loki exclaimed as Odin. "You-you'll be executed for this!"
"Then I'll see you on the other side, brother," Thor smiled as Mjolnir returning at a fast pace.
"All right, I yield!" Loki transformed back into himself. Thor pushes him towards where he was sitting at before. People were getting out of their way. Thor caught Mjolnir.
Skurge out of breath breaks through the crowd and tries to announce, "behold! Thor… Odinson."
Loki with his back facing him, his hands on his hips. "No, no." Loki placed his finger up. He turned around to face Skurge. "You had one job. Just the one." Skurge tried to defend himself but Loki turned around to face his brother.
"Where's Odin?" Thor demanded.
"You just couldn't stay away, could you?" Loki was exasperated. "Everything was fine without you. Asgard was prospering. You've ruined everything. Ask them." He stood toe to toe with his brother.
"Where's Father? Did you kill him?" Thor chase Loki backwards to the futon he was sitting on earlier.
"You had what you wanted. You had the independence you asked for," Loki was being pushed down by the hammer. "Ow, ow, ow, ow. Okay. I know exactly where he is."
Thor removed his hammer. "Show me where he is now!"
Loki rubbed his chest while getting up. "This way then." He headed off while the rest of the people were watching them. Thor followed behind him. "You're needed." Loki gave a snide look to Skurge. He followed behind the two.
"Asgard prospering under you, that's a new one," Thor chuckled.
"It actually was," Skurge piped in. Thor and Loki both eyed him before facing forward. "I don't know why you have this hatred, well actually I can see why, but Asgard is back to its former glory and the people are happy. You should have come when they performed Lady Frigga's story, absolutely ten times better." Loki shot him a glare. "Not that that play was terrible."
Thor eyed Loki. "What? You think I am that selfish?" The two headed back to the Bifrost.
Fandral, Volstagg, and Hogun met up with the three of them. They paused before heading to the bridge.
"It is good to see you again, my friends," Thor greeted all three of them individually.
"We knew you would come back," Fandral exclaimed.
"Just only a matter of time," Volstagg added. He glanced at Loki. Hogun glanced at Fandral.
"Loki, alive," Fandral paused to view him. Loki inclined an eyebrow to see if Fandral was going to speak his mind. "Shouldn't be a surprise, but it is." Volstagg placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Hogun will watch the palace, while Fandral and I will accompany you," Volstagg spoke.
"I guess I'll go back to be a janitor," Skurge looked away as his job was taken from him now that Thor was back.
The five of them headed to the Bifrost chamber along the rainbow bridge. Volstagg spoke with Thor about his quest down on Midgard while Fandral spoke with Loki.
"I hear you have a child now," Fandral whispered to him.
Loki smirked. "She is pregnant with our second, soon I'll have two." He mocked him.
Fandral did not let him try to have the last word. "You made Sigyn lie on your behalf."
"She is loyal to me," Loki continued. "If she lies, it is on her own behalf. However, if you dare to continue to speak ill of her and our children then I will no longer accept your civility as an acquaintance." Loki glanced at him before moving away from him.
Fandral grabbed his arm. "Are they safe?"
Loki shrugged off his hold. "Of course, why wouldn't they be?"
The five reached the chamber.
"We will be back, keep watch," Thor ordered. Fandral and Volstagg nodded. Skurge went to the severed dragon head to drag it away. Volstagg moved the sword so that Thor and Loki can head to Midgard.
Thor and Loki were in Midgardian attire. Loki was in all black suit while Thor was in more casual with a t-shirt, hoodie, and a denim jacket. The two were facing a building being demolished in New York.
"I swear I left him right here," Loki watched the crane. The day was becoming worse and worse for him.
"Right here on the sidewalk, or right there where the building is being demolished? Great planning," Thor taunted.
"How was I supposed to know? Can't see into the future. I'm not a witch," Loki defended.
"No? Then why do you dress like one?" Thor teased.
"Hey!" Loki was offended.
Thor could not believe his brother was standing next to him. "I can't believe you're alive. I saw you die. I mourned you, I cried for you." Thor then thought what had become of Sigyn.
"I'm honored," Loki felt grateful.
Two young women had been watching the two for a while now. "Ask him," one of them was giving the other some courage.
She walked up to him, "Hi. Would you mind taking a picture with us?"
"Oh, sure," Thor smiled. Loki rolled his eyes. "Start figuring out where he is." Thor smiled while taking the selfie with the girls.
"Oh, my God," one of the girls was excited about her picture as she stared at it.
The two girls started to walk away, when the other spoke. "Sorry to hear that Jane dumped you."
Thor was taken aback. "She didn't dump me, you know. I dumped her. It was a mutual dumping." Loki was amused. His Midgardian lover dumped him. He gave his brother a pat on the back out of sympathy. A red-orange circle started to appear below Loki. Thor noticed it first. "What's this? What are you doing?"
Loki noticed it as well. "This isn't me. Ah!" Loki fell through the circle that became solid once again.
Thor poked the card that was in Loki's place with his umbrella that was Mjolnir. "Loki?" Thor picked the card up and headed to the address.
Loki was falling. A voice spoke out to him. "I was told by a lovely young woman to be gentle with you if we ever cross paths, be humble for I took pity for your wife and child. You could be in a much worse situation."
"You're a coward! Face me instead of using this type of simpleton magic!" Loki was fearing for how long he shall fall. It was not letting up. Loki was no longer fearful but irritated and annoyed. He would be continuously falling until either he can figure a way out or his oaf of brother would have to release him. Loki was now thinking how Sigyn and this wizard crossed paths. He would have to ask her when he would get the chance.
Thor reached Doctor Stephen Strange's place. The two conversed upon Odin and his whereabouts. Dr. Strange stole Thor's hair to find Odin. Once finding him, he created a portal to where Odin was at.
"He's waiting for you," Dr. Strange prompted at the foot of the stairs.
"All right," Thor became serious.
"Oh, don't forget your umbrella," Dr. Strange reminded him.
"Oh yes," Thor called his hammer to him with his right arm extended. Crashing and furniture moving could be heard in the distance. "Sorry." The umbrella was in his hand once again. "There we go. I suppose I'll need my brother back."
"Oh yeah," Dr. Strange almost forgot. "Right." He opened the portal.
Loki could finally see light; however, it was too much too fast. He yelled as he hit the floor trying to brace himself. He was thoroughly annoyed. "I have been falling for thirty minutes!"
"You can handle him from here," Dr. Strange did not care.
"Yes of course," Thor agreed. He shook his hand. "There we go." Loki was now standing eyeing Dr. Strange. "Thank you very much for your help."
"Good luck," Dr. Strange wished them.
"Handle me?" Loki was angered enough that a flick of both wrists and his new blue blades were in the palms of his hands. "Who are you?!"
"Loki!" Thor tried to get control over his brother.
Loki started to step towards him. "You think you are some kind of sorcerer? Don't think for one minute, you second rate-"
"All right. Bye-bye." Dr. Strange moved the portal to encompass both before Loki could finish his sentence. Dr. Strange closed it just as quick. "What does she see in him?" He shook his head. He looked up the stairs. "Could be better then the other brother, now I will have to go clean up his mess."
Loki fell upon the grass, while Thor was trying to figure out where they were until he spotted his father in the distance, overlooking the ocean. Thor headed over to him while Loki got up while brushing himself off before heading over to them as well.
Thor tried to look where Odin was looking. "Father?" He looked back to him.
Odin breathed. "Look at this place. It's beautiful." Loki was closing in on them.
Thor leaned in. "Father, it's us." Loki kept his head bent down while standing next to Odin.
"My sons," Odin glanced at Loki. "I've been waiting for you." Loki did not know what to say. This day was becoming stranger by the second. Thor returned and now they were back together with Odin.
"I know," Thor reassured. "We've come to take you home."
"Home, yes," Odin agreed. "Your mother, she calls me. Do you hear it?" He tried to listen to her calls. Loki could see how ready his father was for death. He looked away.
"Loki, lift your magic," Thor commanded. Loki shook his head while eyeing Thor.
"Took me quite a while to break free from your spell," Odin spoke to Loki. "Frigga would have been proud." Loki wanted to say something but thought better of it. Odin turned around. "Come and sit with me. I don't have much time." The two followed him to a nearby rock. The three sat down.
"I know we failed you," Thor eyed his brother. "But we can make this right."
Odin disagreed. "I failed you. It is upon us. Ragnarök."
"No, I've stopped Ragnarök," Thor tried to reason. "I put an end to Surtur."
Odin shook his head. "No. It has already begun. She's coming. My life was all that held her back. But my time has come. I cannot keep her away any longer." The two brothers looked to one another for answers. Neither of them knew who he was talking about.
Thor leaned in. "Father, who are you talking about?"
"Goddess of Death. Hela. My firstborn. Your sister." Odin let the truth finally be known.
Thor was angry and confused. "Your what?" He looked to Loki to see if he had the same reaction, but Loki was still in a daze but worried about his father. The two looked back to him. There were so much left unanswered.
"Her violent appetites grew beyond my control. I couldn't stop her, so I imprisoned her. Locked her away. She draws her strength from Asgard, and once she gets there, her powers will be limitless," Odin explained.
"Whatever she is, we ...we can stop her together. We can face her together," Thor was ready to take on whatever was before him.
"No, we won't. I'm on a different path now. This you must face alone. I love you, my sons," Odin glanced at them before pointing out into the open. "Look at that." The two followed his gaze. "Remember this place. Home." Odin started shimmer in a golden light. The two watched their father dissipate into a flickering glow of gold as it casted itself into the wind near the ocean. The two got up to follow it, knowing that their father had gone to Valhalla.
Each Valkyrie could feel the death of the Allfather. Sigyn could not leave her child but sent her respect to him as the others helped him find his way to Valhalla.
The two brothers were still in shock of how things turned out. The storm was making the sky darker. The two faced each other, ready to fight.
"Brother," Loki was going to defend himself.
"This was your doing," Thor placed the blame on him.
They headed to the where the portal had opened. Loki changed back into his attire. Thor stuck his umbrella into the ground, creating lightning all around them, changing back into his armor.
A black portal had formed with white greenish light spewing in. Black mist formed a woman clad in black with porcelain white skin and smoky eyes with black hair that as been unkept. She smirked at the two men staring back at her. The black portal closed on itself.
"So, he's gone," Hela watched for their reactions. They waited for her. "That's a shame. I would've liked to have seen that."
Thor spoke first. "You must be Hela. I'm Thor, son of Odin."
"Really? You don't look like him," Hela mused while giving him a once over.
Loki could sense how evil she was. "Perhaps we can come to an arrangement."
"You sound like him," Hela pointed at him and acknowledged it. "Kneel." She smiled.
Loki bent down. "Beg your pardon?" He could not believe he was ordered to kneel.
Hela glanced at her wrist and one flick, a scepter appeared. She stared back at them. "Kneel." She ordered again. "Before your Queen." She spoke as if it was obvious
Thor stepped forward. "I don't think so." He threw Mjolnir[EL1] [EL2] at her. Hela caught it. Her arm was still fighting against it coming forward. "It's not possible."
"Darling, you have no idea what's possible," Hela crushed the hammer with one squeeze of her hand. The hammer crumbled while shooting off lightning. The two moved away from the destruction.
Mjolnir was laying upon the grass in crumbles. Hela moved her hands from her forehead back to form her pronged headdress. She brought out two scepters in both hands.
Loki made the executive decision to bring him and his brother back to safety, to regroup and attack later. Loki was still in his casual attire. "Bring us back!" He yelled up into the sky.
"No!" Thor yelled. He tried to runaway but was caught in the Bifrost. As it beamed them up, Thor was headed past Loki. He looked back down to see that Hela was following them. "Loki!" Loki flung one of his daggers down at her. She caught it and swung it back up. Loki was struck and caused him to barrel out of the Bifrost into the unknown parts of space. His yell could be heard before he vanished. Hela moved her way up to Thor next. He punched her. The two fought before Hela sent him flying out into the unknown parts of space as well.
She walked onto the chamber where she was met by Volstagg, who turned the sword, and Fandral waiting for Thor. Skurge was moping up the mess still.
Volstagg stepped away from his post. "Who are you? What have you done with Thor?" Hela sent a scepter into him. Fandral drew his sword. She sent another flying into them.
"I'm Hela," she moved past them staring at Skurge. The three watched her. She shot two more into the two, killing them instantly.
Sigyn could feel two more warriors that needed to be escorted to Valhalla. She could not leave but they felt so familiar to her. Her eyes that were watering with the death of Odin had started to trickle tears down her cheeks.
"I'm just a janitor," Skurge started to kneel in defeat.
Hela loomed over him. "You look like a smart boy with good survival instincts. How would you like a job?" Skurge accepted whichever job she laid out for him.
Sigyn sensed a foreboding being back in the Nine Realms. It was one she was well warned about as a Valkyrior. She picked up Vali, who was playing with dolls and stuffed animals that resembled the beasts of the Nine Realms. She headed out of the house with him in her arms. Her horses trotted over to her as she called them with her mind. "I just need one of you to take us back. I need to ask the others if it is true." Her white horse kneeled before her. She placed Vali upon the horse before swinging herself on. Her winged horse galloped through portals before flying back to Swan Lake.
"I come before you as Sigyn, Eternal Valkyrior, bearing questions in mind," Sigyn called out to them.
A few of the women stood on the other bank with armor. "Sister, we greet you, however why do you not cross?" One of them asked.
"I am with child," Sigyn explained. "I also have a young son here with me. I cannot cross the waters as it may be another son. I wish not to obstruct the purity of womanhood that our sisters had created and kept so long."
"We understand, what is it that you wish to ask?" They accepted her respect.
"Allfather, is in Valhalla?" She called out trying not to choke on her words.
"Yes," one of them nodded.
"I felt two more warrior's death," Sigyn started to tear up. "Who were they?"
"Two of the Warrior's three, Volstagg and Fandral," they bowed their heads.
Sigyn placed a hand over her mouth. Vali could see his mother crying and held onto her, hugging her to make her happy. "Who-who is the one attacking Asgard?"
"An enemy of all Valkyrior, the Goddess of Death, Hela," one held her head in solemn. "We are hidden here due to our sisters lost in that battle. Brunhilde's sister sacrificed her life for her lover, to save one of the mightiest of our Valkyrior, but it was all in shame, as we lost the battle against her. We have been calling sisters back since Hela has reemerged. We will not let her wipe us out again."
"Aye," Sigyn nodded. "I will be hiding as well."
"Stay hidden, we will send a signal of when we shall attack," one informed. "We may not be able; however, it is a lost cause, we still need to defend Valhalla if she dares to enter there."
Sigyn nodded before heading back to her hidden home. She hoped that her husband was alright. Sigyn sent a thought out to her husband but felt as if she sent a message out into open space. She had to get back to safety. She could not do much without more information and she had two children to take care of. Sigyn could not fight freely anymore. She had her family to think about. It was tough. She would still try to help as much as she could from behind the scenes, but Loki created this safe place to hide from the world. It was her loyalty to him that she refrained from showing herself, especially now with Hela taking over Asgard.
