A/N: Okay so I know that it has been a while since I have updated this… I am currently studying abroad in the UK right now, so I've been busy. Also my dog just passed away too, so that's been rough… She was amazing and was great! She lived a rough life. She was abused by her first owners and was rescued before my family adopted her and then later she suffered from seizures. She had a good life for the past 12 years with us and I am lucky that I found her.
It was at the local mall up for adoption and pointed at her and told my dad "I like this one! She is nice! Can we get her?" Only to be surprised when I arrived home from church the next day (something I don't generally do but my Grandma does so I joined her) on Thanksgiving to be surprised to see a new addition to our family. I was told that she didn't suffer and that my parents were with her when she passed away. So that's helpful. But yeah, I miss her and was glad that I was able to spend time with her over Christmas holiday before returning to the UK to finish my study abroad.
But moving on! This is a new update for you all! Sorry my Author's note is so long and unusually personal for me… So yeah! I hope you enjoy my update! And thank you to everyone who still reads my stuff! It is amazing that you put up with my randomness of when I will write something and my random updates!
"YOU'RE BATMAN!" the little boy screamed. Bruce sighed as he knelt down to Richard's level.
"Yes I am," Bruce answered back. "You were going to find out sooner or later. I guess it was a matter of time."
"OH MY GOD!" Dick yelled in excitement. "Don't worry! I'll keep it a secret! Oh my god! A secret! I've never knew something like this was possible!"
"I'm glad you realize it's a secret Dick. There are only a few that know about this, and it is very important that you don't tell anyone. I'll inform you if someone already knows but you cannot tell anyone about this," Bruce said. Dick nodded his head seriously. "Good. I am sure you have questions," he added. Dick paused and looked at him.
"You are looking for Zucco aren't you?" Dick asked. "So he doesn't get away with it like your parent's killer did," Bruce looked at the boy stunned at how quick he put it together. He rarely saw the kid, and didn't discuss it much with him. Then the answer came to his mind. Alfred.
"You are right, I am looking Zucco and now I am going to get the people that hurt you at the orphanage," Bruce explained. Dick tilted his head.
"Zucco's mine," he answered back simply. "As for the orphanage, I don't want anyone else to go though what I went though…"
"No one will. I need you to tell me what happened there so we can take them to court. As for Zucco, no that is too dangerous. I refuse to let you take part," Bruce said pulling off his cape and handing it to Alfred. Dick didn't look impressed at the idea, however he nodded. Placing a hand on Dick's shoulder he stood up and walked to the batcomputer ruffling the kid's hair on the way.
"Hey!" Dick said. Bruce laughed a bit.
"Come on, why don't I show you how the computer works and we can talk about the orphanage."
The leads on Zucco where getting thinner; however, the orphanage case was a slam-dunk. Having a few of the best lawyers on retainer had its' advantages. The orphanage was now having a change of regime, and Wayne Enterprise was funding it to better help the children. With that taken care of Bruce could focus on other things, like Zucco.
Alfred came down to the Batcave with a tray with coffee and food. Greedily grabbing the coffee Bruce almost swallowed it one gulp. Only to stop at Alfred's unimpressed look.
"You could stand to better care for yourself sir," Alfred said. "Living on coffee doesn't improve anything," he added.
"I am so close Alfred!" Bruce hissed looking at the file again. "Zucco is laying low, and I know it!"
"What about Master Dick?" Alfred asked. "He has been asking for you," he added. Bruce sighed and looked at the time reading 3 o'clock in the morning. Realizing he had been up for the last 72 hours and this wasn't helping maybe checking in on Dick upstairs wouldn't be a bad thing. Wait, Dick would be asleep, so maybe he could sleep. Gotham's nutcases where all in Arkham, he hoped, therefore the city could be left to the police for a night. Besides if anything happened he would be alerted.
"I'll eat breakfast with you guys in the morning. I'll cancel my morning interview with Clark, he'll understand… And I'll try and make it to dinner, " Bruce offered, feeling a bit bad at his lack of presence in the boy's life. "I'll go upstairs and leave Gotham to police," he sighed in defeat.
"Very well sir, I'll make the calls when the sun is up sir," Alfred offered. Bruce just nodded and made his way upstairs. Sighing as he passed Dick's room he paused. First there was a whimper and then a scream. Panic flooded Bruce's mind and he pushed the door open. Dick was thrashing in his bed screaming.
"NO! MOMMY! DADDY!"
"Dick!" Bruce said trying to ease the boy awake. "Dick wake up! It's just a dream!" Dick's eyes flew open. Bruce swore at himself, he forgot when Alfred had mentioned the nightmares, more focused at the time with telling Dick about Batman. Dick looked around and curled into a ball on the bed crying. Bruce awkwardly sat on edge of the bed rubbing circles on the boy's back. "Dick it was only a dream."
"I'm sorry… I didn't mean for you to hear…" Dick said softly in his pillow. Bruce paused and looked down at Dick.
"Oh, Dick. No, it's okay. I want to help you. I am just not good at this emotional thing… I'm not that open with my emotions," Bruce tried to explain.
"I know, so that's why I didn't want you to have to deal with it," Dick explained. Bruce sighed.
"Just because I'm not good at it, doesn't mean I don't want to help you Dick," Bruce said. Pulling the child up into a seated position Bruce looked at Dick. "What was the dream about?" Bruce asked already forming a guess.
"They… were… were… falling…" Dick whispered. "And I couldn't stop it… I couldn't! Even though… Even though I… I knew…" he hiccupped through his tears.
"Dick, it's okay I have dreams like that too. About my parents."
"You do?' Dick asked pulling his stuffed elephant to his chest. Bruce nodded. Dick then held out the elephant. "Peanut helps keep the dreams away sometimes, maybe he can help you," Dick suggested. Bruce smiled at Dick.
"Thank you, but I think Peanut wants to help you tonight," Bruce said pushing the well-loved toy back to Dick. Dick thought for a moment and then nodded. "Okay, you think you can go to sleep then?" Bruce asked. Dick thought for a moment and nodded. "Good, I am going to bed. If you need anything don't hesitate to ask," Dick looked at Bruce and then threw his tiny arms around Bruce's neck. Bruce froze only to return the hug after a moment and then set the child back down pulling the covers over him. "Good night."
He had a location. After hunting down a few Zucco's goons he knew where the bastard was. After hanging a few from some rooftops later he had a location. How was he so god damn stupid? Heading down to the circus grounds Batman was ready to bring the bastard to justice. After leaving the goons practically gift wrapped in front of Gotham PD he drove off towards the circus grounds.
"Alfred I found Zucco," Batman growled over his com.
"Very good sir, I see you are heading towards there now," Alfred added.
"Yes, the circus grounds," Batman answered. "Don't tell Dick about this yet, I want to make sure I got Zucco before raising the kid's hopes. It was nice bonding with the kid. He was actually trying to make an effort now and Dick was turning out to be a really cool kid.
"Very good sir," Alfred said. "I will await for you to arrive and deliver the news yourself."
"Thanks Alfred," Batman said pulling up in his Batmobile. Jumping out of the car he made his way towards the circus tent. Walking in he looked up at the broken abandoned trapeze set up, then around the rest of the darkened tent.
"Welcome Batman," someone suddenly said from behind him. "I've been waiting for you," suddenly everything went black.
It felt like an eternity had passed when Batman finally opened his eyes. The once darkened tent now shone with light. Realizing he was bound against a large dartboard he struggled to release his wrists from the rope. "Zucco!" Batman called.
"Had a nice nap?" Zucco asked walking in front of Batman tossing a knife in the air and catching it at the handle. "After I got wind about you and your interrogation of a few of my men, I knew you were on your way. Thought I would greet you personally."
"Honored," Batman growled back counting the number of hired guns in the tent, 5 maybe 7. Zucco's eyes narrowed.
"Temper, temper Batman. I would hate to slip up and… Miss," Zucco tossed the knife at Batman only for it to hit next to his head. "Extend your time to live," he added tossing another knife towards the other side of his head. Batman glared at the criminal in front of him rubbing the inner part of his gloved writs at the robes. After having had enough of getting caught in his earlier days as Batman he started adding a rough file like material around his gloves, enabling him to work the robe away making it weak enough to snap.
"What was this all about Zucco?' Batman asked. Zucco shrugged.
"I asked the circus for insurance money… to keep them safe. They refused, accidents happen, just like tonight," tossing the knife directly at his head. Pulling his hand free snapping the robe he realized he wasn't going to be quick enough… Then a Bat-a-rang flew through the air knocking it out of the way. Looking around in surprise the tent froze for a moment. A giggle sounded through the air and a small figured jumped from Batman. The figured was a young boy with messy black hair. He wore a bright red leotard with a canary yellow cape and bright green leggings. Taking a second look at the kid Batman's eyes widened, Dick!
