Meeting Booster Gold

Booster Gold sat in the Watchtower monitor room watching the rest of world and her heroes taking care of her. Skeets was off researching more about the 21st century and comparing it to his 25th century knowledge. Coming to the 21st century was still a somewhat recent thing for Booster and this was harder then he thought it would be - he knew every major city had its hero, except for Bludhaven and that was just out of the question. There was only one hero crazy enough for that city and he didn't quite exist yet.

Booster was watching the screen for something, anything that might require a hero that wasn't already being taken care of. The tower was empty except for him and maybe Red Tornado, but that didn't mean much. Booster then sighed, seeing Red on the screen in front of him dealing with an earthquake in Japan, where most the rest of the League was. At least he wasn't on crowd control.

Suddenly there was an announcement on the coms, announcing the arrivals of Batman and Robin. The Dynamic Duo, legends in the 25th century. Turning, he watched Batman walking into the room with Robin in his arms.

"Where is Superman?" Batman asked.

"Off-world, with the Green Lanterns, Martian Manhunter, and Supergirl" Booster said.

"Wonder Woman?"

"With the rest of the League in Japan. Earthquakes. Why aren't you there?"

"Arkham break-out, I would be in Japan if all of Gotham wasn't a risk. Only you are here?" Batman asked. Booster nodded. "I need you to watch Robin," at that the little boy stirred in Batman's arms.

"Batman?" Robin asked looking up at his mentor. "What are we doing in the Watchtower and…" he turned to see Booster Gold. "Booster Gold!" he said in awe.

"You know who I am?"

"He knows all League members," Batman said. "I need you to watch Robin, get him in bed by 10, he's been sick so he needs his rest."

"Why can't I come with you? I can help put Joker away," Robin coughed.

"You are sick," Batman said. "And Agent A can't watch you tonight, he's away," Robin looked up at him and sniffed. "Booster Gold will watch you - you said you wanted to meet him."

"I never agreed to…" Booster started.

"You have nothing better to do, most League members have watched Robin, pull your weight."

"But I…" Batman gently handed Robin to Booster.

"If anything happens to him, you better believe you will be on crowd control and monitor duty for the next year," Batman growled.

"Batman! Don't leave!" Robin started to cry, reaching out for Batman. To Booster's surprise he saw Batman soften.

"I'll be back, little bird, I promise," Batman said patting him on the head. Robin nodded and sniffed. "Get some rest, maybe Booster Gold has some stories to tell you," he added.

"You have stories?" Robin asked, his domino mask's white widening. Booster felt himself melting at the sight of the small boy.

"Yes?" he said. "I can watch him, Skeets and I have nothing else to do, this will be fun," Booster smiled. Batman nodded and looked at Robin, something seemed to transpire between them, and then Batman left.

"Story?" Robin asked as Batman left.

"I have a few," Booster said. "Skeets!" He called. The small A.I. unit floated into the room.

"Yes Sir?" Skeets asked.

"Could you please watch the monitors? Batman left me with Robin to watch," Booster said. "If something happens, let me know."

"Of course, Sir," Skeets answered. "Enjoy your time with Robin."

Walking into the lounge Booster set Robin down next to him on the couch. "So what kind of story do you want to hear?" Booster asked Robin.

As little known about their identities it was known that this Robin was special. He was going to become a member of Young Justice, the leader of the Team, and later would be the leader of the Teen Titans. After that he would grow into being Nightwing, protector of the city Bludhaven, and then take up the mantel of Batman. When the original came back, however, he would gracefully return to being Nightwing, a post better suited for the more joyful hero. Booster found it hard to believe that that man was the little boy curled up next to him asking for story time.

"A hero one! You're from the future right? Tell me a story that won't spoil the future!"

"Okay, let me tell you about a hero from Bludhaven," Booster said.

"Why would anyone work there?" Robin asked.

"Because he knew that someone had to protect her people," Booster said. "He knew that they deserved to feel safe at night."

"What was his name?"

"Well what would you like his name to be?"

"Nightwing!"

"Nightwing?" Booster tried not to let any surprise slip.

"Superman told me about the hero Nightwing from Krypton," Robin said. "I like the name!"

"Okay then, Nightwing knew that the people of Bludhaven deserved to feel safe at night. Tuck their children in knowing it'll be safe. He was crazy, and caring enough to protect them keep them safe under his… wing," Robin yawned and cuddled closer to Booster Gold.

"Does Nightwing have any powers?" Robin asked.

"No he doesn't he…" Suddenly an alarm went off. "Skeets?" Booster yelled.

"There is an emergency in Metropolis, Sir, someone has kidnapped Lois Lane and is demanding Superman," Skeets said.

"Damn, he's off-world," Booster said.

"We have to go!" Robin said. "I like Lois, I met her once."

"You are sick, though," Booster said. "Skeets, can the police handle this?"

"The criminal in question seems to be threatening Ms. Lane's life if anyone but Superman comes."

"Do we know who the criminal is?" Booster asked.

"It is one Toyman, Sir," Skeets said.

"Can you contact a League member?" Booster asked looking at Robin. The idea of saving Lois Lane was tempting, so tempting - leaving Robin with Skeets and saving the day. But then Batman would be sure to find out. And that frankly scared him.

"I have tried, Sir, but they are all saying to deal with it on your own," Skeets said. Booster bit his lip. The chance at saving Lois Lane was growing more tempting; it would be his ticket into the big leagues. He would be recognized as a hero, the Lois Lane would write an article about him. It would be big.

"The police will have to…"

"They won't!" Robin said. "Batman says that the police are all mostly useless!"

"In Gotham yes, but that doesn't mean it's the same in…"

"If Batman says police don't do their job, then they don't!" Robin retorted. "Let's go!" Robin sneezed.

"Hey, you are sick, kid," Booster said. "You have to stay here. Skeets can you watch Robin?"

"Of course, Sir," Skeets answered. Robin pouted.

"You need Skeets! He helps you like how I help Batman!" Robin said. "We have to go!"

"There is no 'we' in this, Robin," Booster said. "I am Booster Gold! I can handle myself! I am a hero!"

"Batman only thinks you are worthy of crowd control, and I've been a hero longer then you," Robin pointed out. "This is Toyman, you are going to need me!"

X

Booster Gold had no clue how this had happened. Robin and Skeets were currently hacking into Toyman's toy dinosaurs and he was attempting to smash them to bits.

"I wanted Superman!" Toyman yelled. Booster Gold watched as Lois Lane hung from a rope over a massive toy T-Rex that was snapping at her heels. Booster flew around trying to destroy as many of the toy robots as he could. Where did Toyman have the time to make these things?

"Let her go!" Booster Gold yelled. Suddenly Lois Lane dropped.

X

"Over here!" a reporter yelled. "Robin! Over here! What are you doing in Metropolis with Booster Man?"

"It's Booster Gold," Booster Gold muttered angrily.

"Superman was off on a mission," Robin explained. "And Batman is dealing with a mass breakout. Booster Gold was telling me a story, and then we got word Lois Lane was captured!" Robin coughed some. Suddenly Booster Gold remembered Robin was sick. Picking the boy up he looked at the press.

"It's time for us to go," Booster said. "Thank you for your time. Ms. Lane, I am glad you are okay," he added. Lois smiled and nodded.

Booster Gold flew as fast as he could and by some chance caught Lois Lane in mid-air as the toy robots all came to a halt.

"Thank you," Lois said. "Who are you again?"

"Booster Gold, and it is all part of a day's work."

"Booster Gold! I caught Toyman!" Robin yelled from below. "Hello, Ms. Lane!"

"Why are you with Robin? Where is Batman? Did something happen?" the reporter interrogated.

"Uhhh…"

At that Booster took the young hero, followed by Skeets, to the nearest zetabeam point. Going to the Watchtower, he realized that Robin was asleep in his arms. The tiny boy was asleep in his arms. Walking towards the longue he moved to set Robin down on the couch. The young hero stirred.

"Booster Gold?" he asked.

"Yes Robin?"

"Finish your story?"

"Of course, where did you leave off?"

"Nightwing powers…" Robin yawned.

"Right, you see, Nightwing doesn't have any powers," Booster Gold said.

"He's like Batman and me?" Robin asked. "Bludhaven and no powers?"

"Yeah, many thought he was crazy! But he survived it. Records say he was very agile; the way he flipped and fought was so graceful it was like watching a show. Some said they saw him pull off acrobatic feats that not even Batman could do!"

"Not even Batman?" Robin asked in awe. Booster Gold nodded.

"Not even Batman!"

"Tell me about one of the crimes he stopped!"

"There was the drug deal going down lead by a crazy maniac with a red biker helmet. Nightwing went to stop the deal. He went to the warehouse and he was out-numbered and out-gunned. You see, it is reported that Nightwing never used guns, and that he preferred using other methods to take down his enemies. And he always did so without killing them. He would rough them up but they would never die. So there he was, in the maniac drug dealer's warehouse," Booster paused for a breath.

"The drug dealer needs a name… Red Helmet?" Robin asked. Booster nodded and smiled.

"So there Nightwing was in Red Helmet's warehouse. There were reportedly 20 armed men with guns, knives, and other weapons. And Nightwing was able to disarm them all and knock them all out except for one. The one criminal that was still awake reported to Bludhaven police later that Red Helmet arrived and it seemed that the two knew each other, but he passed out shortly after Helmet's arrival. But Nightwing successfully stopped the deal from going down and took a warehouse full of illegal weapons and drugs off the streets. And then…" Booster Gold looked down and saw Robin sleeping. "Good night, Robin. I can see what will make you an incredible hero one day."

X

Batman stormed through the Watchtower. Everyone quickly cleared a path to Booster Gold, seemingly knowing his intended target. A paper was clutched in his hands and he tossed it at Booster Gold.

"Monitor and crowd control for 6 months," he growled.

"I'm sorry! Wait, 6 months?" Booster Gold asked.

"Robin liked your story… Said I shouldn't blame you… The rest of the League was too busy to help Ms. Lane, even though you tried contacting them," at that he glared at the League-members in the room. "Enjoy your first headline, it'll be your last for a while," with that, Batman left. Looking down at the paper's headline.

Robin catches Toyman with help from Booster Gold

"With help?"

"They got your name right, Sir."
