It's been a while but I'm finally back to writing fics again. Had to take some time to care of some things. This is a fic that has been going on in my head since the manga ended. It kinda a spoiler, but not really, that Sugawara became a grade school teacher after high school.
Disclaimer: I do not own Haikyuu
The started off easy students were all getting along with each other. That is until Sugawara had let the students decide what sport they wanted to do for the month, between a list. The majority wanted to play volleyball. And the first team leaders were picked as well. Sugawara suddenly overheard one of his students talking.
"I'm not gonna pick you for my team. You're too small to even play volleyball." A boy with short brown hair said.
"That's not true! I can play just as good as you!" Another boy, who had mid-length black hair yelled.
'Yeah it is. You can't even reach the net can you Shorty." The brown haired boy taunted.
"That's enough, both of you. Samuto, apologize to Sei right now. That was very mean of you to say." Sugawara said coming to break up the argument before it escalated. As it was, Sei was already starting to tear up.
"But that's what my big brother always says. Small people can't play volleyball." Ruto said in his defense.
"Samuto." Sugawara called sternly, causing the younger to flinch.
"Ok, Suga-sensei. Sorry Sei for being mean." The boy grumbled, before running off, causing Sugawara to sigh while pattin Sei's back.
He figured that the situation would work itself out but it just seemed to get worse. When they started playing matches, Sawmuto never called on Sei and he could hear the taunts Samuto was making and others joining in. It was Wednesday when Sei had come up to him and said that he didn't want to play anymore.
Thinking for a moment, Sugawara came up with an idea before calling a number.
"Hey do you still have the video of our match against Shiratorizawa?" He asked the caller.
"Great, could you do me a favor and bring it tomorrow? And maybe come talk to the students? Apparently some of them think you need height to play volleyball and the smaller students don't want to participate. Great, thanks for the favor." After lunch he gathered all the students together for a video.
"Alright class, today we won't be playing a match, I have something really special planned." Taking out a disc, and placing it in the player, he turns back to the class. "Since sensei actually played volleyball, I figured i could show you all one of my matches. And I also got someone to come up to talk to you all." And with that, he started the video.
The video he showed them was the one with Karasuno vs. Shiratorizawa during his third year. As the video progressed Sugawara watched as the students started at the screen, transfixed by the match. By the end of the video, a lot of them had stars in their eyes.
"Did everyone enjoy the video?"
"Sensei, you looked so cool in the video." A little girl with pigtails said.
"Aww, you're making me blush. Thanks for the compliment, Sayuri.
"Suga-sensei, who was the orange boy?" A boy with curly red hair said.
"That, Muruwaka, was my kohai, Hinata. He was a little oddball and a troublemaker."
"But he looked so small compared to everyone else in the video." He heard Samuto say.
"I was. But I could jump." Was the response that could be heard.
"Hinata, you were supposed to wait until I introduced you." Sugawara scolded playfully.
"Sorry senpai. I got impatient." A voice said, with a smile. Everyone looked over to see a male with orange hair enter the room.
"I guess it's fine. Thanks again for coming on your day off. I'll pay you back some way."
"No problem. I'm sure the coach is happy I'm actually taking a break rather than practicing."
"Why am I not surprised? Class I'd like to introduce you to an old teammate of mine. This is Hinata Shoyou, a pro volleyball player."
"Whoa, a pro. I thought all pros were supposed to be tall." A boy with blond hair said.
"My big brother did say that a libero could be small. So do you play libero?" Samuto asked.
"I'm not a libero. In high school, I played middleblocker, a position meant for tall people. And now I play as an opposite hitter."
"You've come so far since high school. I remember you couldn't even receive a ball properly and now you're a hotshot." Sugawara said dramatically. "Well then can you give a few words to the class."
"Alright. So how many of you think that height makes you the better volleyball player?" Hinata saw several hands go up.
"That's where you're wrong. While it may give you an advantage, it doesn't mean you'll be the best. There are opponents that can have better techniques than you or more experience than you. We played against someone that was over two meters and we won."
"But what if they have good skills and they're tall? What can you do then?" Sei asked in a whispered voice.
"Well, then you either gotta outsmart them, outjump them, or attack with a group."Hinata said after thinking about it.
"Yep, a synchronized attack. Our team was so bad at it at the start." Sugawara said, reminiscing, before explaining." A synchronized attack is when everyone moves at the same time to confuse your opponent."
"Yeah, though at times that kinda backfired. For outsmarting, there are techniques that can be used to slip past the defence of blockers."Hinata said.
"You learned about that from Fukurodani's ace, Bokuto right?" Sugawara asked.
"Not to mention Hoshiumi-san and the Little Giant also had some awesome techniques." Hinata said excitedly.
"Little Giant? What's that?" A little girl with long brown hair asked.
"The Little Giant is what got me playing volleyball in the first place. I was on my way home when i saw a video of him. Like me, he was small compared to the other players but he still won against those that were over 20 cm taller than him. And Hoshino was like that too. "
"And if you are like Hinata was at the start, and can't outsmart them, you can try to outjump them." Suga said.
"Outjump?" A male voice asked.
"Yeah, despite my height, I wanted to face blockers head-on, in a competition of height. If I could get to the top even one millisecond faster than the opponent, I had a I knew I couldn't do it on my own. I luckily had the help of a very talented setter named Kageyama. Though I'd never tell him that." Was Hinata's response.
"Yeah, you two were always at each other's throat and were dubbed the freak duo. And your quick was like the bane of any blockers."Sugawara interjected.
"A lot of the time,I felt myself thinking that before my eyes, a high, high wall was blocking me. What sort of scene is on the other side? What will I be able to see there? The view from the top was a scenery that I could never see on my own; but, if I'm not alone, then I might be able to see it." Hinata told them.
Looking at the time, Sugawara got the class's attention," Alright we are almost out of time. Any last words from our guest speaker?"
"Hmmm. If any of you plan on doing volleyball in the future don't give up just cause you're smaller than others. Being small only makes it a bit harder to play, but not impossible. If anything, to me, it makes it more enjoyable. Especially when you're able to be viewed as a threat by people that tower you."
"Everyone thank Hinata for coming." Sugawara said, and there was a chorus of thank you's from the kids.
"Thanks for having me. And Suga-san thanks for inviting me. See ya." Hinata said and left.
As the students were gathering their things, Suga saw Samuto walk up to Sei. While he couldn't hear what they were saying, he saw Samuto hold out his hand towards Sei. Which made the teacher smile. It was a good idea to let Hinata talk to them.
And done. This story has been on my mind for the longest and I'm happy I finished it. So the students are 5th graders since it didn't specify what grade he taught. So please review and tell me what you think.
