"I'm ready to go," she said softly as she slipped the brush into her bag and then shouldered her purse. That was the last thing she had to pack before she was completely ready to walk out the door.
"Let's head down, then."
She nodded and took hold of his hand, allowing him to guide her out to the elevators, even as he was carrying both of their bags. "Hey, I heard that you two were heading out here for a few days?"
Erin turned her head to look at Alex, wondering what she could possible mean by her words. They were a little too casual for her, and she instinctively moved closer to Spencer, seeking out his protection and warmth. His hand tightened around hers, and then he drew in a long breath. "Yeah, Erin and I both wanted to explore the country a little more before we head home. I guess that it's a good thing that we were paired after all, since our wants coincide so well."
Alex nodded as she frowned a little. "There is that. Dave is taking me on a walking tour of the old town here, and then I think we're going to check out the library. So much more boring than your plans. Do you think you might have room for two more in your journeys?"
Erin waffled between being polite and telling her that of course she and David were welcome to join them, and being selfish and refusing Alex. Spencer, though, had no such compunctions, as he shook his head emphatically. "No, I really don't think there will be. Erin and I will see you when we return. Have a good walk with Rossi."
Before Alex could say another word, Spencer began to lead her towards the doors of the hotel, and she turned her head to give her former friend a small smile, hoping that she understood what was happening. From the look on the woman's face, she certainly did not, and Erin pursed her lips together tightly as she fought to keep from crying, knowing that in the end, Alex's opinion shouldn't matter that much to her. "You didn't have to cut her off quite so abruptly, Spence. It was just a question, after all."
"And if I had let it go on for much longer, she would have guilted you into agreeing to allow her and Rossi to accompany us to Casablanca. I could read it in your body language, Erin."
"Have I truly become that open of a book?" she murmured as he hailed a taxi, and he nodded before helping her inside the vehicle and then placed their bags in the trunk. Once they were underway, she reached out for his hand as she stared out the window, taking in the scenery that was passing them by. There was something so breathtaking about the juxtaposition of old and new, which felt different, even though she had been to Europe numerous times and experienced much the same dichotomy.
Spencer's hand tightened around hers as they came to a stop in front of the train station, and she squeezed back before allowing him to get out of the taxi and grab their bags before settling the fare with the driver. Once he had helped her from the taxi, Erin found herself content to walk by his side, his free arm around her waist, as they made their way to the correct train platform. "This would be easier if we had Emily here with us, you know."
"I know, she spent quite a bit of time over here when Ambassador Prentiss was assigned posts in the Middle East. My Arabic is broken, at best."
"But at least you try!"
She lifted her face to look up into his, giving him a small smile. "It would make me a bad tourist if I didn't try." He nodded before leading her onto the train, and they quickly found their seats. Spencer showed her that he had managed to get assigned seats in the first class section, something she was grateful for, since that meant they had their own row. Spencer graciously allowed her to take the window seat, and she pulled her camera out of her purse, wanting to take a few pictures along the way, if she could get the camera to focus on what would be passing quickly by.
"I think that I'm going to get you a ring while we're in Casablanca," Spencer said lowly once they were underway. Erin blanched a little as she placed the camera in her lap and turned her head to look at him. There was no way that she was ready for that serious of a relationship, and if he truly wanted to take things that fast, she would have to say something, as she was not ready to be that serious. He smiled at her as he shook his head, clearly reading her thoughts as he reached out and stroked her hair. "I didn't mean to insinuate that, Erin. I just meant that we are in a more conservative country, and it would look odd if we shared a room and someone noticed you weren't wearing a wedding band."
She relaxed as she nodded, seeing the logic of his thinking. "But promise me that you won't buy something terribly expensive. I don't want you to be even further put out because of me."
"Those were a gift, Erin. And no one is ever put out over a gift." He leaned over and pressed a tender kiss to her forehead, causing her to sigh before she settled back in her seat. Feeling eyes on her, she glanced across the aisle to see a young woman looking at them, and she smiled shyly before pulling away from Spencer a little to go back to watching the scenery pass. She had completely forgotten that more public displays of affection weren't looked upon favorably, and she knew that they would have to tread a little more carefully from now on. It wouldn't do to end up in jail in a foreign land, after all. She didn't think that the FBI would be pleased to try and get them out of that particular scandal.
A soft gasp escaped her lips as they passed out of the city and headed into the countryside. It was greener than she had imagined it to be, and she felt a peace that she had been lacking in her life lately start to settle over her heart. Bring her camera up, she took a few quick pictures of the scenery before settling back in her seat and staring out the window, her hand slipping from her lap to the space between her and Spencer. It didn't take long for his hand to find hers, and she sighed in pleasure as he threaded their fingers together, holding on lightly as the train sped off towards its destination. In that moment, she wondered if she would be able to let Spencer go when this vacation was over and they had returned to their real lives, not this gentle fantasy that was slowly enveloping them in a bubble of warmth. She needed that bubble, if she was honest with herself, and the thought of leaving it when she arrived home ached far more than it should. Before she became more maudlin, Erin allowed her head to come to rest on Spencer's shoulder, allowing his presence to fill her senses as she continued to gaze outside.
