"Eh?" was the only confused sound that Izuku could muster as Izumi held out her hand in greeting. Sure, Midoriya wasn't a common surname and sure, Izuku had never heard of anyone with the same surname before, but surely there were other Midoriya's out there. Still stunned, Izuku lowered his arms and took her hand slowly. She shook his hand eagerly in greeting. Izuku's eyes looked over to All Might who was bearing witness to all this for help, but his jaw hung open from the shock and he seemed too stunned to even notice Izuku's pleading look.
"So," he pressed on awkwardly, "we're cousins or something?" he asked, "I wasn't aware that I had any more family on that side"
"Cousins?" Izumi seemed to spit the word out, "No way! I'm your sister" she announced.
"S-sister!" cried Izuku. Izumi simply nodded with a proud smile all the while Izuku felt like he was going to crumble away with the slightest breeze.
"But, I don't have a sister" added Izuku quietly.
"Well, you do now. I just can't believe dad didn't tell you about me. I mean he even named me after you" she crossed her arms crossly, thinking of their father.
"Dad? Me? What?" blurted out Izuku, his mind struggling to take in anymore information, "that can't be right?" he could almost feel himself swaying.
"Yeah, we share the same dad. You know, Hisashi, fire breather and all that" replied Izumi making wild hand motions to express their fathers fire breathing quirk. She lifted an eyebrow at her brother, finally starting to see that he was struggling with the news.
"Midoriya!" called out a voice from across the room. Izumi looked past her brother to see Ms. Umi calling to her from the far side of the room. It had been her who had summoned Izumi to the facility room to see how she was getting on for her first day.
"I gotta go. But I hope we can catch up again soon" she smiled to her brother and gave his a small nod before heading past him to meet her homeroom teacher. Izuku stayed where he stood still in shock. It was All Might who seemed to recover from the shock the fastest and ushered Izuku out into the hallway, walking with him towards the roof for some fresh air till he recovered enough from the shock to speak. They were halfway down the hallway when Izuku's voice started working again.
"A sister! I have a little sister!" he yelled out loud and All Might patted him on the back as several students still lingering in the hallway looked to him with confused looks.
"Seems so" was all All Might could respond with.
"I-I can't believe it," went on Izuku, staring at his hands in bewilderment as they walked, "How did I not know, why did no one tell me?"
"Did you need to speak to your mother about it?" offered All Might.
"N-no," he sighed, coming to a stop and dropping his hands to look at the ground, "It will probably be more of a shock to her and I don't want to do that to her right now" Izuku lifted his gaze to look to All Might, not knowing what to do with this new information.
"Well," began All Might, trying to help, "look on the bright side, you have a sister, that's got to be exciting" Izuku beamed up at his mentor.
"Yeah it is" Izuku was still shocked, but he felt warmth growing inside him. He had a sister and part of him was bubbling with excitement. He loved his mother, but having a sibling was something he could have only ever dreamed of after his father left
He continued to follow All Might down the hallway, the gears in his mind turning in thought as he began to break down the information he had been given.
He had a little sister.
At most she was only a year younger than him, which meant she had been born while their father was still with Izuku's mother. He didn't remember much about his father. He had been so young when he left and the memories he did have felt fuzzy and unreliable, but from the sound of it, his father must have left them to live with Izumi and her mother, a thought that weighed him down heavily.
AND to add insult to injury his father had never reached out to him, never tried to make contact to tell him he had a little sister or to just talk to him in general and here it sounded like Izumi had grown up with their father, while he had disappeared from Izuku's life. The only time he ever heard from his father was a yearly birthday card in the mail, which at least let him know that his father was still alive somewhere, but he didn't really consider that to be communication.
The heavy feeling in his gut turned into a ball of anger. How could their father abandon one child for the other, and to tell Izumi all about him, but not vice versa hurt.
Izuku had been so focused with his thoughts that he hadn't realised they had reached the roof of the school until All Might stopped ahead of him and Izuku practically walked right into him. Only then did he notice to cooling breeze and the open sky.
"Sorry" called Izuku quickly as he stepped back from All Might, who simply smiled and waved his apology aside.
"Stuck in your head?" asked All Might, his smile softening, "You've been silent most of the walk here"
"Uh yeah sorry" muttered back Izuku, embarrassed. He added a silent thanks that at least he hadn't been muttering to himself out loud.
"It's a lot to take in and GAH-" he cut himself off, the frustration at the situation and his father bubbling up inside him till he couldn't contain it anymore and he cried out, "How could he do that? He just leaves my life one day and I never see him again and then I find out he's been living a normal life with a new family! Who does that?" He raised his arms in anger as he spoke then finally lowered them, looking up at All Might. He knew All Might didn't have an answer for him, he supposed no one other than his father could truly answer that. He felt no ill will towards Izumi, after all it wasn't her fault, but he couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealously. His father was practically a stranger to him after all.
All Might smiled to Izuku warmly, his eyes showing how much he cared for his student and understood his pain.
"I don't have the answer for you young Midoriya, but you have a little sister now, who looks up to you. You have someone to care for and to be cared by in return. I strongly believe you should take the time to get to know each other and soon you will feel like family. I'm sure your father has his reasons and who knows, Izumi might have some of the answers for you" Izuku let out a long breath as though he had been holding it without knowing and returned All Might's warm smile.
He had a sister. He had someone to get to know better, to care for. She seemed interested in meeting him again and so did he.
"Where the hell have you been?" growled Bakugo as Izuku reached their dorms. He was dressed in their blue and white gym uniform and sitting on the couch and had barked the question as soon as Izuku came in through the entrance.
"Sorry something came up" replied Izuku without looking at him an continued to take off his shoes before stepping onto the carpet of the living room area.
"Huh?" sgrumbled Bakugo angrily as he got up and stalked over to stand before Izuku, blocking his path. Izuku finally made eye contact with Bakugo, his red eyes glaring back, waiting for an answer. When Izuku didn't start panicking to answer Bakugo went on, "You know, I don't like being stood up" his face twisted into a manic smile, proving just how angry he was.
"Oh it's a date!" called Kaminari jokingly from the couches where he sat beside Kirishima. Bakugo swing on his heel to glare back at Kaminari, raising his hands to little sparks and smoke emitted from his palms
"Huh? You wanna say that again dunce face?" he challenged.
"Sorry, I'll go get ready now" called out Izuku as he passed Bakugo. Bakugo turned his blazing eyes to him as he past and swung out an arm trying to grab him, clearly not done with being angry, but Izuku ducked away from him and headed off to his room to change, ignoring Bakugo as he called out angrily behind him before getting distracted by his friends taunts again.
Changed into his gym gear Izuku returned to the living room space to find Bakugo gone. With a glance to Kaminari, part of his face blackened from smoke, and Kirishima still sitting on the couches, he pointed to the front door and Izuku shot him a smile, thankful for his help. Exiting the dorms he found Bakugo sitting on the steps to their dorm, his back to him as he looked out into the dark tree line opposite them.
"About damn time" he grumbled as he heard Izuku approach. He got to his feet and turned back to face him, his anger seemingly having faded away, though the scowl on his face remained.
"Now you gonna tell me what the hell took you so long? I don't like waiting" he waited for Izuku to reach him before heading down the stairs and following the path along the tree line.
"I met someone today" started Izuku, walking beside Bakugo as they headed towards their training ground. Bakugo shot his a questioning look through narrowed eyes.
"Turns out I have a sister" continued Izuku still looking ahead as they walked. He felt a sense of warmth saying it out loud to someone who didn't know.
Bakugo stopped mid step and looked sideways at Izuku, questions written all over his face.
"What, but you don't have any siblings" he retorted, "unless-" he broke off, his eyes narrowing again, "let me guess, your dad" Izuku nodded in reply, still looking ahead.
"What a shitbag!" he cried out loud, startling Izuku who flinched back a step and stared at Bakugo wide eyed. He hadn't known what to expect from Bakugo when he told him the news, but cursing his father hadn't been at the top of his list.
"Who the hell does that?" He shrieked into the night. Part of Izuku felt warmed that Bakugo was getting so angry on his behalf. He still felt that way himself. Bakugo seemed to calm himself with a long groaned sigh and turned back to Izuku, who was now a couple steps behind him.
"Well, how old was she, like ten or something?" he asked more calmly.
"Actually she must be closer to fifteen" he replied as he stepped forward again to stand beside Bakugo.
"What?" cried out Bakugo again, Izuku not flinching as badly this time over his outburst, "that means that bastard had her when he still lived with you" he continued to grumble to himself angrily as he stepped forward again, continuing to head towards where they chose to train. Izuku followed after a moments hesitation. As they walked the last string of words Izuku could catch from Bakugo's angry grumbling was "I never liked the bastard anyway"
