A/N: Hey everyone. It's been a while and I'm having mixed feelings of being back. I had lost all motivation to do anything really and I'm still figuring out my life. Fanfiction had been a huge part of my stress relief and I miss participating in this community and sharing things with you all. But it can be taxing sometimes.
With that, I want to say that I don't know how often I'll be able to make updates. But I know that I don't want to disappear for such a long time again.
Thanks to everyone who stuck around and the new ones too! Here's the mini-intro chapter to the next part of "Jump Start"!
Side note: I realize it's been a while so I made kind of a Summaries/Notes guide for previous chapters if anyone wants to look at it to refresh their memory. I'll try to post a link on my profile.
Chapter 17
"There's been no change in Daniel's condition since we got him here," Cyborg noted as he again ran a reflex test on the unresponsive young man in front of him.
And, again, Danny didn't react.
"His vitals are stable, though his overall temperature and heart rate are lower, and his breathing is slower, than the average human. His pupils do not react to any outer stimuli and, in general, neither does he."
Cyborg made sure his arm was still recording as he tinkered with the machines monitoring Danny. A few electrodes on his chest and his head collected the data he interpreted on the monitor. It was all normal…normal for Danny. At least that hadn't changed. Cy checked the bags hooked up to the boy's I.V.s as well.
"It's only been six days, but he's fine with just the fluids. He won't eat anything we give to him…and yet—"
A thud at the only way in or out of the room warned Cyborg that he and their waking comatose patient were about to get a visitor. The room's temperature plummeted as the thing of ice and will stepped through. Bella ignored him in favor of dropping her offering to Danny. A banana and bunch of grapes.
Only at this did Danny stir. His left hand reached out to caress the familiar's head as she nuzzled his covered body. Blue eyes sparkled with light as he finally reacted to the outside world. Danny's mouth twitched into a small smile as he felt the relaxing cool emanating from the deer.
"Bella," he cooed lightly. He dreamily traced the lines of the construct's face. She nudged the food towards his hands as his eyes cleared and focused on her offerings. He took the banana in hand and munched, causing Cyborg to cringe as the boy ate the whole fruit, peel and all. Danny ate the grapes as well, ignoring his surroundings and refocusing on Bella.
After he was done, Cyborg called out, "Daniel? Danny? Do you know where you are?"
But all the boy did was go back to petting Bella and tutting at her. The deer huffed at Cyborg in response in a kind of what-can-you-do manner and preened under the ministrations.
Cyborg decided to pack it up for now and come back in a few hours to see if anything had changed.
"There's been no change in the search for Danny," Maddie reported for the nth time since the disastrous rescue attempt on Christmas.
After the Justice League had been given credit for solving the world's weather issues and ridiculous airheads claiming climate change had been solved, Amity Park was still grieving for the loss of their mayor and the reveal of his nefariousness. The ghostly natures of him and the still missing Daniel Fenton were not revealed to the public but the Fentons and all in their immediate group knew what had happened.
They were meeting again for the third time that week, growing more desperate by the day and more obsessed than the ghosts they once hunted. Speaking of which, there was now limited contact with those of the Ghost Zone. The younger and the lesser ghosts would come visit and cause minor upsets and one of their group would be dispatched to handle it. But the older and more powerful ghosts would not show.
Even their patrols using Danny's map of known sectors of the Zone gave less than fruitful results. They never passed by Skulker or Ember in their domains. Even Walker's jail was barren, void of him and Bullet and any officers or detainees. The Far Frozen wasn't in the right spot; and even after Maddie factored in any unintentional shifting by nature of the Zone, they couldn't find it.
The only place that was normal by Ghost Zone standards was Clockwork's far-off tower. The standoffish mentor had nothing to offer them when confronted. All they could tell the group was that everything was as it should be, even if they did not desire it so. The foreboding red coloring of the tower and the desolate landscapes of the mirrors behind the Guardian of time did not settle their fears. But Tucker remarked that Clockwork was the Overseer of all timelines and not just theirs; so, they went on their way.
They missed the ancient ghost sighing and turning back to his screens, noting that nothing in the timeline had changed.
"There's been no change in the progression of the symbols," Raven remarked to herself, watching as the faint glow of that tattoos on her arms subsided before she covered them.
With her birthday tomorrow, she knew today would be it.
Her friends.
The people of Jump City.
All life on Earth.
There was nothing to stop it. Nothing to soften the blow of being permanently erased from existence. But she was determined for them to live the rest of their lives as blissfully ignorant as possible. No matter how short it would be.
So, when Robin met her outside her room early that morning with no news on the Slade and Trigon front, she decided to go in the kitchen and cook a large breakfast for her friends instead of going to the rooftop to meditate. Of course, Beast Boy played like the food may have been poisoned before an affronted Starfire shoved a stack of pancakes in his mouth and told him that friends should not accuse friends of such things.
A previously morose Cyborg guffawed as the chipmunk-cheeked Beast Boy struggled to swallow before choking. He threatened to throw the powdered sugar when Beast Boy picked up a bowl of fruit and aimed at him. The only thing that stopped them from starting the food fight was black energy encasing them and making them put their weapons down.
"Eat, before I make you," Raven seethed, playful but unnerving as always.
They obeyed, of course, and joked around as good friends do, completely unaware of their impending doom. And for today, Raven was determined for them to stay this way.
"There's been no change in my pockets for months; so, I don't know why I'm checking again," the nameless girl muttered to her lonesome.
She frowned forlornly at the pie in the window, deciding against trying to go inside and ask for scraps. She was tired of that. So, she went a couple of blocks south and hid away from prying eyes in the noonday sun. Going invisible and quickly flying back to the crowded Jitters, she made sure to turn intangible too so she wouldn't bump into anyone.
It should have worked out as it always did with the little ghost girl phasing through the masses, pilfering a sweet or two, and absconding to a hideaway to come back to the visible spectrum. And that's what she did, until she felt a gust of wind stop right in front of her.
Red and yellow took over her vision, a confused and stern face staring her down.
"I've never seen a meta do—" The Flash's lecture was interrupted by the small girl shooting off into the clouds while going invisible.
The tiny phantom made her escape while the speedster, ready to take chase, was directed instead to the static coming from his earpiece.
"Flash, come in. Constantine and Dr. Fate have called an emergency meeting. All ranking members of the Justice League are required to attend."
The Leaguer sighed, putting aside the new meta in his city, and made his way out of the city proper to follow Batman's call.
"There's been no change," the solitary figure commented as the night gave way to day.
As the world turned and the too ignorant few were alerted of the swirling energies that foretold the apocalypse, Raven meditated on the roof of her home. She contemplated her journey, from her mother, to her instruction on Azarath, to her growth as a young woman with the Teen Titans. The leftover chill of the dark night and the dew of the morning made her shiver as she allowed herself to feel everything for the first time in years.
Raven was racked with tears and sobs as the first beams of the rising sun crept up past the horizon. They were met with the reddening of the glyphs on her exposed limbs.
She was all alone as her vision turned white and the Portal opened.
A/N: Wow...it's been a long road without you my friends. But I'm not really gonna tell y'all all about it cuz it's been ROUGH. Just...take advantage of a good situation while you're in it and take care of yourself because sometimes others just don't give a shit about you.
And I'm gonna start replying to y'all directly because this took a long time and the word count was very deceiving. That and...for some reason...I've gotten flames? From people who are extremely bored? And dissatisfied with their lives? So they try to make the already depressed woman feel worse? Like the pathetic trolls they are? It's honestly hilarious.
Replies to Reviews (that don't have FF accounts):
Guest 1 (Chapter 15): Peace never lasts long! Peace is an illusion!
Guest 2 (Chapter 1): Sounds like a good idea. Maybe you'd like to give it a go?
16crk: Oh wow lol. I'm glad it affected you so much but please be careful with your devices. And you're writing again! Awesome! So am I lmao!
1207 (3 on Chapter 15...my guy lol): I've never read/watched Hellsing so I have no idea how to do that. And I wasn't really into GoT either. But if you mean that I'm gonna make Danny super powerful and destroy his enemies and then lose himself to madness in a horribly written finale (or so I've heard)...then probably not.
Vvv (Chapter 10): Yeah! We support up-to-date terminology in this house!
Shez (Chapter 16): Tears. Copious tears. Thank you so much!
Guest 4 (Chapter 16): She'll be in the upcoming chapters more.
Guest 5 (Chapter 1): You and Guest 2 have to get on these fics!
PhantomDani: AH! AAAHHH! Oh my goodness thank you so much! I'll definitely tell her.
FL Florida (Chapter 6; Chapter 14): I'm so glad you're loving this. And that second comment was EXACTLY MY THOUGHT PROCESS WRITING IT OUT. And I'm not good. But I'm getting there. Thanks for checking in!
Love y'all. Really. Deuces, but not for too long, JennaUtena
