'Are you certain you have everything?' Two people, mother and son, stood on a platform at King's Cross station labeled 9 3/4. Pulled into the station was a scarlet steam engine.
Sam McCaffery rolled his eyes as his mother fussed over him and poked through his trunks. 'Yes, mum. You checked last night!' He ran his hand through his mahogany hair and tried not to frown.
His mother sighed. 'I know, Sammie.. Just making sure.' She smiled at him and ruffled his hair. 'I can't believe you're all grown up now...' she pulled him into a hug.
'Ack, mum, geroff!' Sam wriggled out of her arms and picked up his trunks. 'Well, goodbye, see you at Christmas!' Before she could say anything else, he rushed off and clambered on to the Hogwarts Express. Yes, he felt bad for going without a real goodbye, but really. He was 13 now, he didn't need his mummy to look after him every second anymore.
Most compartments on the train were full, but he managed to find one that was entirely empty. Once he'd heaved his trunks onto the luggage rack, Sam sat back and waited for the train to leave.
