Prologue

500 years after Darkstalker

Brightmind faltered in the air as she spotted an island on the horizon. Her wings started to beat faster as her excitement grew and grew. She had been flying for over two days. She had begun to dip closer and closer to the raging ocean under her. She had taken off from the southernmost peninsula of the Rainwing rainforest. She is a legendary explorer and set out to try and find more islands to map. Brightmind beat her wings harder as she neared closer to the island.

She finally reached the island on a vast grassland. She thudded to the ground and sat down to scan her surroundings, catching her breath. There was a cliff that had about a 100-foot drop straight into the ocean, with needle-sharp rocks at the bottom. The opposite way, the tall grass stretched for miles. As she finished her scan, a few rabbits jumped from their hiding places and tried to scurry away from her. She snatched one up and took a bite from it, crunching through its thin bones. She swallowed the last bit of her rabbit.

During the scan, she had unconsciously noticed there was another dragon staring at her from the long grass. She gave a start as she realized what she had seen. Brightmind looked back at the dragon and noticed they were wearing some sort of animal skin cloak. The cloak had some of the long, savannah grass plastered to it. She guessed to help them blend into the environment. She saw the dragon turn and glimpsed the dragons' tail whisk away through the grass. She darted over to where she saw the dragon, but couldn't find any trace of it.

After walking for a bit, Brightmind glanced up at the sky and realized that the sun was getting close to scraping the horizon. She crawled into a thicket of grass and started to build a small tent with the long savannah grass. By the time she finished the canvas, the sun had mostly disappeared from the sky, just peeking over the horizon. She crawled into the makeshift home and laid down.

She grabbed her pouch she had and slid it off, over her snout, and poured all the contents of the bag out onto the ground around her talons. She quickly snatched up her lantern and blew a small flame into it. She placed the lamp off to the side and picked the other items she had up off the ground. She picked up her journal, inkpot, map of Pyrriha, and some extra paper.

She placed down the stuff she was carrying in the center of the tent. She picked her journal back up and placed it against the side of the canvas. She unrolled her map of Pyrria and a small sheet of blank paper. She grabbed the extra paper she had and placed it on top of her journal. She then positioned the inkpot on the left side of her map. She dipped her ink-stained claw into the ink. She scanned the map and found where she had been when she took off. She quickly calculated on the small slip of paper where the island was by using how long she had flown, and her speed.

She then set the extra paper off to the side to dry and rolled the map back up. She picked up the map and placed it next to her journal. Brightmind then grabbed her journal and placed it down in front of her. She opened up the journal to the first page. She started to write about the side of the island that she had seen so far. She also sketched the dragon she had spotted earlier on the corner of the page. She soon started to feel sleepy, so she also placed her journal off to the side to dry. She grabbed some stray grass that was on the ground and piled it in the center of the tent. She finally picked up her lantern and blew out the flame. The tent was instantly plunged into darkness. She set the lamp carefully back down and felt her way to the pile of grass. She climbed on top and laid down, immediately being sent into a deep slumber.

She awoke to the noise of shuffling of grass right outside her tent, and whispering voices. She lept to her feet and growled. She heard one of the dragons shift back in surprise. "Who's there?" Brightmind hissed out.

"A dragon, duh," replied one of the dragons, chuckling to themselves.

"Seriously," Brightmind said with a sigh, "I'm serious. Who are you?"

"I'm Xerophilous," replied one, "And my friend here is Opulence."

"Why did you tell her our names?" Hissed Opulence.

"Why not," Xerophilous said, "She did ask."

"Well, what's your name," Opulence said in a snobby voice.

"My name is Brightmind," She responded, as she thought Great, annoying idiots

"Well, come on out of the tent so we can see you!" Xerophilous said enthusiastically.

Brightmind pushed the tent flap out and slipped out through the fabric. She glanced at both of them in surprise, not suspecting that she would find a new type of dragon. "Oh, I didn't expect a new tribe," She said with genuine surprise.

"Great, it's a dragon from Pyrria, that means we'll have to kill her," Opulence muttered.

"Hahaha, funny joke, Opulence!" Xerophilous said through gritted teeth.

"What do you mean, joke Xero? I wasn't joking. The queen told us so," replied the confused dragon.

Brightmind eyes widened in shock. "Wait... really?" Brightmind said cautiously, afraid of the answer. She took a small step back and stared into Opulence's eyes.

"Yes, we do need to kill you," Opulence stated, shuffling closer to her. Opulence then started to reach out to touch her shoulder.

"Stop Opulence," Xerophilous firmly, reaching out to stop him.

But he was too late.

Brightmind hissed as pain spread ferociously from the spot on her shoulder where he touched. She fell back on her hind legs and squeezed her eyes shut.

"Opulence, why did you do that!" Screamed Xerophilous, ripping Opulence's talon off her shoulder.

Brightmind fell to the ground, writhing in pain. As her vision and hearing blurred, she thought she could make out the sounds of a scuffle. As her hearing faded completely, her eyesight started to get worse, she expected to just blackout, but then she began to get a headache. The pressure kept growing more painful behind her eyes. Then it moved into her eyes, and she felt something snap. Her eyesight disappeared immediately, leaving her blind and deaf. At first, nothing felt painful for her after the snap. But then the pain started rolling through her body from her eyes. She screamed. She felt blood running down her face from her eyes. She then blacked out.

Authors Note

I really couldn't think of a way to add in what happened to her/ her eyesight without switching perspective. So here's what happened to her.

Second, what happened to her eyesight was gory, and I'm not even sure if it's possible, but here is what happened. What happened to her vision was that her pupils split, not allowing her to see through them.

The sentences below are the basic's of what the new tribe is about (SPOILERS)

A standard Deathwing has a grey body with green or blue scales for wings, which fade inward.

A standard ability is their death touch, which is where they get their namesake from. When a Deathwing touches a dragon from another tribe, the afflicted subject will start to blacken from the point of contact, along with a loss in hearing and eyesight. If not cured within a day using a plant found on the Deathwing island, the afflicted subject will die in a day. This doesn't apply to another Deathwing or any non-dragon creatures.
