A/N: Hey! So, this story is going to be a little different than a lot that you're going to see on this site. In short, it's actually in script formatting. I do write what one may call "normally," but when I first read Twilight (and Life and Death, which this is based on), I always imagined re-doing the movies as a TV show. My dad was a theater major in college, so I knew quite a bit about scripts, and I decided to go for it.
A couple things: Note 1: This is with Life and Death characters, and a lot of these scenes I had to make up on the spot. Note 2: Each of the stories are written in a different style, based on how much information we got about them in the books. For example, Carine's has a lot of voiceovers, versus Archie's, which has a lot of short scenes. Note 3: I do not own any of these characters, or the story itself. Note 4: Carine's story was the first one I wrote, and because of this, Carine's will be the roughest and (hopefully) the writing will get better.
Okay, last thing, I promise. ESTABLISHING means that it's an exterior shot of a town or building intended to show where the following scene generally takes place. EXT stands for EXTERIOR, or outside, and INT stands for INTERIOR, or inside. V.O. stands for VOICEOVER; CONT'D means that a character's line is CONTINUED, and O.S. stands for OFF SCREEN. ALL CAPS either means that a character is showing up in the episode for the first time, or there is a noise that will need to be added.
Anyway! I love rambling, as you'll soon discover, but enough! Enjoy!
EXT. CULLEN HOUSE, LONDON, ENGLAND, 1645 – DAY
Houses sit on either side of a cobblestone street. A YOUNG CARINE CULLEN looks out the window dreamily. Her hair is long, blonde, and pulled into a messy ponytail. Young Carine wears a long dress. Text on the screen reads:
Dr. Carine Cullen
London, England
1645
CARINE (V.O.)
I was born as the only daughter of an Anglican pastor. My mother died in childbirth. And my father was...a hard man. Driven. He believed very strongly in the reality of evil. He led hunts for witches, werewolves...and vampires.
CARINE'S FATHER picks Carine up, making her disappear from the window. Carine's Father is a middle-aged man with blond hair.
EXT. TOWN SQUARE – NIGHT
Text on screen reads:
1663
The THREE ACCUSED PEOPLE stand at the stake, burning, as vampires look on from alleyways. CARINE CULLEN [also known as DR. CARINE CULLEN] stands in the crowd of people, looking up at the stakes. Carine is a very beautiful young woman with blonde hair and brown eyes.
CARINE (V.O.)
They burned a lot of innocent people - of course the real creatures that he sought were not so easy to catch./p
Carine walks over to Carine's Father. They begin arguing.
CARINE (V.O.; CONT'D)
But I did what I could to protect those innocents. I was always a believer in the scientific method, and I tried to convince my father to look past superstition to true evidence. He discouraged my involvement. He did love me, and those who defended monsters were often lumped in with them. My father was persistent...and obsessive. Against the odds, he tracked some evidence of real monsters. I begged him to be careful, and he listened, to an extent.
EXT. TOWN SQUARE – NIGHT
TOWNSPEOPLE gather pitchforks and torches. They wait in an alleyway in a line. The only one truly seen is Carine's Father at the head of the line. A VAMPIRE emerges in the street, unseen by anyone else. The Townspeople and Carine's Father pour a vat of pitch into one, while other Townspeople wait by the other access point.
CARINE (V.O.)
Nothing happened. They waited a long time, and then left disappointed.
The Townspeople and Carine's Father leave.
CARINE (V.O.; CONT'D)
Now that they were warned, how would he ever find his monsters again? It wasn't hard.
EXT. CULLEN HOUSE - NIGHT [ESTABLISHING]
The street sits silent.
INT. KITCHEN
A small, rugged kitchen sits with a table and two chairs pushed up against one wall. Carine sits at the table, slightly frantic. When Carine's Father enters, she stands. The vampire appears at the other side of the room.
VAMPIRE
You are a fool! You will pay for the damage you have caused.
Carine's Father steps in front of Carine to protect her.
VAMPIRE (CONT'D)
(smiling)
Go to your hell knowing this - that what you love will become all that you hate.
Vampire tosses Carine's Father to the side and grabs Carine. Vampire bites Carine's neck. Carine SCREAMS in pain. Vampire drops her then walks over to the preacher. He kills the preacher while Carine watches. Vampire then leaves when he's finished.
INT. CELLAR
Carine crawls into a cellar, bleeding and in obvious pain.
CARINE (V.O.)
It's a miracle I was able to keep silent, to stay undiscovered. But it was over then, and I realized what I had become.
INT. CAVE – NIGHT
Carine sits in a small cave; her eyes are now bright red, then fade to black as time passes.
CARINE (V.O.)
I stayed as far as I could from the human populace, recognizing that my willpower was weakening, too. For months I wandered by night, seeking the loneliest places, loathing myself. One night, a herd of deer passed my hiding place. I was so wild with thirst that I attacked without a thought.
EXT. MEADOW – NIGHT
Grass covers the small area; a cave sits to one end. A herd of deer passes by the opening of the cave. Carine stalks out of the cave and attacks one of the deer, biting into its neck. The other deer flee, terrified.
CARINE (V.O.)
My strength returned and I realized that there was an alternative to being the vile monster I feared. Had I not eaten venison in my former life? Over the next month's my new philosophy was born. I could exist without being a demon. I found myself again. I began to make better use of my time. I've always been eager to learn. Now I had unlimited time before me.
INT. LIBRARY, 1720
Text on the screen reads:
1720
Bookshelves surround Carine, who sits at a desk, reading. Carine's eyes are now gold.
CARINE (V.O.)
I studied by day, planned by night.
INT. LIBRARY, 1798
Text on screen reads:
France
1798
Bookshelves surround Carine. Carine stands in her dress by the bookshelf, reading a medical book.
CARINE (V.O.)
I swam to France, and continued on through Europe, to the universities there. By night I studied music, science, medicine - and found my calling, my penance, in that, in saving human lives. It took me two centuries of effort to perfect my self-control. I find a great deal of peace there, at the hospital...
INT. BALCONY, VOLTERRA, ITALY, 1806 – NIGHT
Text on screen reads:
Volterra, Italy
1806
SULPICIA, ATHENODORA, and MARCUS stand on a balcony. Carine stands behind them. MELE kneels before Sulpicia, clutching at her gown. Sulpicia and Marcus both have black hair, while Athenodora has blonde hair. Mele has light brown hair and wears rags. Sulpicia and Athenodora wear richly colored gowns, but Carine is in white.
CARINE (V.O.)
I was studying in Italy when I discovered the others there. They were much more civilized and educated than the wraiths of the London sewers. Solimena was greatly inspired by my friends. He often painted them as gods. Sulpicia, Marcus, and Athenodora. Nighttime patrons of the arts. And Mele. A...servant. Sulpicia's little thief. They'd been there for nearly millennia. I stayed with them for only short time, just a few decades. I admired their civility, their refinement, but they persisted in trying to cure my aversion to my "natural food source," as they called it. They tried to persuade me, and I tried to persuade them, to no avail.
INT. HOSPITAL, 1911, COLUMBUS, OH
Carine walks through the hallway of a sterile hospital, looking quite glum in her nurse's uniform.
CARINE (V.O.)
Eventually, I decided to try the New World. I dreamed of finding others like myself. I was very lonely, you see. I didn't find anyone for a long time. But, as monsters became the stuff of fairy tales, I found I could interact with unsuspecting humans as if I were one of them. I began working as a nurse - though my learning and skill exceeded that of the surgeons of the day, I couldn't be accepted in another role. I did what I could to save patients from less able doctors when no one was looking. But though I worked closely with humans, the companionship I craved evaded me; I couldn't risk familiarity.
Carine turns the corner.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM
TEEN EARNEST PLATT sits on the cot, his left leg stretched out before him. It is obviously broken. Teen Earnest is a sixteen-year-old boy with caramel-colored hair and a very innocent face. A middle-aged DOCTOR in a doctor's coat leaves the room. Text on screen reads:
Columbus, OH
1911
Carine enters.
TEEN EARNEST
Do you think it's true?
CARINE
Do I think what's true?
TEEN EARNEST
The doctor. He said my leg's broken so bad I'll walk with a limp for the rest of my life. Is it true?
CARINE
Let me take a look at it.
Carine steps toward Teen Earnest.
A/N: First one down. I'm going to be splitting all the origin stories up into separate chapters so there's no confusion, but I did originally make these into two episodes, one 49 minutes, the other 32.
Also, technically, I've finished writing the first three "seasons." So, aside from Origins, which I will be posting once a day for, I'll be releasing a chapter a week. (We'll see about which day…)
Whew. I hope you enjoyed this, and come back tomorrow for one that I've had to adjust the most: Jessamine's story!
