As for the abilities Kamui was granted through his reincarnation there are altogether four, with three already introduced.
Tenseigan, Innovate clear, and one that he uses but he himself doesn't put much attention in. His 'idealized body'. It's actually semi-original power, that Kamui himself doesn't realize how much potential it holds and how much it helped him already. It strengthened and will continue to strengthen all the qualities of his previous life's body.
He was relatively good looking? Now he's outrageously good looking.
He was a fit person? Now he puts Olympic athletes to shame.
He was a stoic and not easily disturbed person? Welcome the unshakable poker face.
In his past life, he had extremely good reflexes? Even if it wasn't shown yet, now his reflexes are literally second to none.
And so on, so on. As I said even MC himself doesn't realize how much this ability helps him out.
There's also a fourth ability, but it will be still a few chapters before it's introduced. I tried all the abilities he had to be with as much synergy as possible, while keeping the requirement that whether they'll be useful or not, to depend solely on the user's growth and capabilities.
Not to say that he won't have more abilities foreign to the Bleach verse, but as with hakuda style based on the gentle fist, it will entirely depend on the MC to create and develop. They may or may not be stupidly powerful.
I never liked the stories, where nevermind who receives the power or cheats the outcome will be entirely the same. Many system stories in particular have this problem. Without the system, the extremely lackluster host would never be able to achieve anything.
Although considering all the extra power that I granted Kamui I may be a bit of a hypocrite.
By the way, where did I write about 7 abilities? I'm constantly going over my notes and I can't find it.
Thank you for reading and enjoy.
Two more weeks passed before Kamui was able to successfully pass his 150 seconds challenge in Hoho class. And with great relish, he accomplished it a day before Gin managed to clear his own requirement of 300 seconds per exercise.
Admittedly, he was very close to losing. It was like Gin started taking steroids, that big of a sudden improvement he got, improving his efficiency by fifteen seconds overnight.
But with an untold amount of willpower, Kamui pushed himself and managed to accomplish the impossible by the skin on his teeth.
He also vehemently refuted Gin's accusations of relying on luck.
Gin was just bitter. Although he may hide it very well, admittedly better than Kamui, he was a very prideful person and he hated losing.
Although unlike Kamui it was rare for him to hold grudges. So he quickly overcame his bitterness.
Progress in other classes was going also very well.
The requirement for both Hakuda and Zanjutsu classes, to complete and receive higher-level training or outright graduating from them is to hold your own in a spar against a high ranked seated officer specializing in this fighting form. With a sealed spiritual pressure you have to at least last for five full minutes. Or even defeat them. Which is harder to accomplish than it sounds.
After all, if Gin or Kamui just released their lieutenant and above level reiatsu, most of the seated officers would simply collapse right then and there.
No. This fight was to test pure and unassisted by spiritual power, skill.
Both Gin and Kamui felt like they already could accomplish it. But none of them applied for a testing fight. They both waited until their skills and experience would be enough to outright crush their respective examiners. None of them wanted just to last for a few minutes in such a battle.
Kamui continued to attend calligraphy lectures by Aizen, but despite enjoying it greatly, nothing special happened. Neither Aizen did something to him, nor another meditative state appeared.
The problem was in Kido classes. The requirement to complete the training was to pick any twelve spells, nevermind which kind. It could be Hado, Bakudo, Kaido, barriers, or seals. Twelve spells might sound like a small number, but it's what is expected of an average soul reaper to master in six full years. If someone completed it sooner, then it was not a problem to give him additional instructions. Usually.
Kamui, who somehow fully mastered forty-four spells in less than ten weeks was completely unprecedented in the history of the academy. He could even use Eishohaki, chant abandonment with all of them. Although as it was too early for the academy to prepare any training targets for Kaido, the healing art, he was somewhat lacking in that area.
It was setting a record that no one expected to be beaten in centuries to come.
He was also later told that he was late three days, for setting a record in Hoho classes in the pillar challenge. The current record is still held by Shihoin Yoruichi
But as Yoruichi is a member of a prestigious Shihoin house specializing in Hoho and Hakuda; and Kamui came from Rukongai, there were a lot of speculations about who is actually more talented in this aspect. Kamui, when asked about it, simply said that it didn't matter. And he fully meant it.
Surprisingly it was Sosuke Aizen who held the record for the fastest completing of the Zanjutsu training. Kamui never pecked him for the person focusing on pure swordsmanship, or a person to seek out attention, but it was just another proof that he shouldn't rely solely on his anime knowledge.
The record for the Hakuda class belonged to Urahara Kisuke. Another person, you wouldn't expect to hold such an accomplishment. Kamui honestly expected Yoruichi to hold this distinction as well, so he was a bit surprised hearing that.
Anyway, all those records were fairly recent. The program constantly changes, and as such, you cannot tackle older records. Well, you can, but why bother.
Coming back to the topic of Kido, the academy was stumped. Among the teachers, there was no one confident enough to teach him anything new. At this point, Kamui was mostly left to his own devices, even if he hasn't asked for an exemption from the lessons as of yet. Although he planned to do it soon. This additional free time would greatly benefit him.
He was currently waiting for the general class to finish so he could speak with Gengoro-sensei. The lesson was quite interesting, as it touched upon the soul society's stance towards the world of the living. It was a bit funny hearing that most of the mortals' mythology was actually a result of them seeing Soul Society's agents at work and trying to explain it by speculations, that later turned into legends or outright religion. It resulted in a strict noninterference policy. Even going as far as to wipe out memories of mortals spotting supernatural at work. It also forbids to pass soul reapers powers to humans. As even if it's only temporary, you cannot be sure how long it will take, and it interferes with memory wipe. In the antique, there were examples of humans receiving for whatever reason powers from soul reapers, and later using it to cause large scale conflicts or even starting their own religious cults.
Finally, the lesson ended and the students slowly filtered out of the class. Only Kamui was left who approached the desk of the teacher.
"Ah, Kamui-Kun, how can I help you?"
"Gengoro-sensei, " Kamui bowed respectfully, and this respect was not faked. Ever since his own short and volatile tenure as an assistant teacher, he gained newfound admiration for those of this profession who really dedicate themselves to their duties. "I'd like to speak about you about being excused from the kido lessons. I already achieved the recommended proficiency in the art, and I'd like to use the time I usually spent on the lesson for personal pursuit. I hope you will grant my request."
"Indeed, it's a bit of a waste for you to spend any more time following the usual curriculum. I already considered this problem, and I intended to approach you about it."
"You did?"
"Yes. Tell me. What do you intend to do in the future?"
"I'm sorry?"
"I meant, what are your plans after graduation. It was something you were originally supposed to hear about in a few days, but I suppose it's not a problem for you to hear about it earlier. Kido Corps Commander and Grand Kido Chief, Tsukabishi Tessai-dono, expressed his intention to take him as his apprentice. If you would agree then you would be immediately graduated, without waiting for the annual examination, and assigned to the Kido Corps."
That was… a big surprise. And it was tempting. Incredibly so. Not because of such early graduation, which would probably be setting up another record. But because of the three words. Grand Kido Chief. Honorary title granted to the strongest kido practitioner in Seireitei. This includes old man Yamamoto.
Receiving dedicated lessons and backing from such a person is something he didn't consider before. However, no matter how tempting such an offer is, joining the Kido Corps is out of the question for him. It would completely mess up all his plans. So he was forced to decline. Regrettably, even before hearing an actual offer.
"I'm sorry Sensei. Please pass to the Corps Commander that I'm touched and truly honored by the offer, but I must decline. I'm sorry for my attitude and I hope my refusal won't offend him."
"Are you sure? You shouldn't decide about it so quickly. Such a monumental decision is something that should be thought over slowly and carefully. After all, such a chance doesn't come around too often."
"My apologies sensei, but my mind is made up, and my decision won't change."
"I see. It's regrettable that your talent won't receive the attention it deserves. But may I listen to the reason for your refusal? I'm sure that Tsukabishi-dono would like to hear it as well."
"Certainly. There's already a division in Gotei 13 and a position I intend to pursue. Joining kido corps while it's an amazing opportunity would be counterproductive."
Exactly. Although usually, Kamui wasn't a person to plan ahead, he already had his sights on a place that would grant him the most entertainment. Kido corps who are a solitary bunch, seldom involving themselves with the matters of the Seireitei besides their designated duties, is simply not for him.
"I see. It's certainly rare for Kido Corps members to leave their own division. I will pass your message to Tsukabishi-dono. I'll also try to appease him in case he's displeased by your refusal."
"Thank you Gengoro-sensei."
"As for your request for exemption from Kido lessons, it's of course granted."
Kamui once again bowed slightly to his teacher, after which he took his leave not expecting this matter to have any further development.
Whatever Kamui may have thought about the situation turned out to be wrong. Because two days later he was invited by the teacher to an empty classroom a bit out of the way from the places students may gather.
What he encountered almost caused his poker face to falter.
In the middle of the room stood an extremely tall and muscular person wearing a gaudy dark blue robe with a large upturned collar, over Shinigami's kimono. In the left hand, he held a black shakujo staff.
Ridiculously large mustache, cornrowed hair with small stylized horns. Behind his rectangular glasses, lay a pair of stern eyes almost burning with intensity.
Even if Kamui didn't hold a reincarnator's status he would still be able to infer his identity based on the teacher's respectful attitude, and connecting it with recent events.
Kido Corps Commander and Grand Kido Chief, Tsukabishi Tessai. One of the strongest Kido practitioners alive, a childhood friend of Urahara Kisuke and his future employee at Urahara's candy store.
Kamui stared for a little while longer, too surprised at the turn of events, before hastily bowing to the man. Inside he was really exasperated. Kido corps members were seldom seen outside of their secret headquarters, and yet now their commander appeared within the academy to meet a student who refused his offer of a tutelage. If some high ranked soul reapers heard this their jaws would drop in disbelief.
"First-year student Shirato Kamui, greets Corps Commander."
He straightened and waited for Tessai to respond, yet he was quiet. He only silently stared into Kamui's eyes. Or more like he was studying Tenseigan.
It wasn't a prospect Kamui was comfortable with, so he decided to interrupt him.
"Corps commander?"
Tessai shook off his contemplative stupor before he leveled his stern look on Kamui.
"So you think of my division as lesser than Gotei 13, huh?"
What? How did he come to this conclusion?
"I'll let you know that the entire seireitei would be lost without the hard work of my proud institution."
What the hell is happening?
"It saddens me that such a young soul, with such high prospects in the art of kido, looks down on that art, its practitioners, and myself."
Kamui was stunned. He couldn't process what was happening at all, and for the first time since he came to this world, he had no idea how to proceed.
"I came down here, hoping to correct your misguided beliefs, and once again extend my intention of taking you as a disciple of mine. Your talent is too great to waste it, otherwise."
He bent slightly, looming over the much shorter pre-teenage boy and drilling holes into his skull with his intense stare.
Kamui felt like swearing out loud. He really didn't predict this happening at all. If he refused a second time, this time straight to the man's face, he would definitely not have a life in Seireitei once the news spread.
But he really didn't wish to join the recluse Kido Corps.
"Corps Commander, I'm extremely sorry, but while I have a great respect for Kido Corps and for yourself; it was always my intention to join a specific division of Gotei 13. In fact, I planned on doing that long before I learned of my talent in the great art of Kido."
Suddenly remembering that Tessai in the anime was extremely touchy on the subjects he was attached to, he decided that praising all those things is a good idea. After all, he was always extremely irritated when someone looked down on Urahara's shop, and in a good mood when someone praised it.
It seemed that the same rule applied here, because Tessai's intensity visibly lessened, although he still didn't look happy.
"Before we continue, tell me what are the abilities of your so-called 'Byakugan'."
"I'm sorry?"
"Your eyes. In the report, it was stated that they held the ability of 360 x-ray vision. But the Reiryoku distribution in your soul favors your eyes too much, for it to hold such a simple power."
Reiryoku distribution? There is something like that? Once again Kamui felt like cursing. He was still too inexperienced with supernatural powers, so many things escaped his notice. How many things he actually overlooked?
Forcibly calming his mind, Kamui replied, thankful for the fact that his poker face didn't falter.
"Indeed, since I spoke about it with lieutenant Yadomaru, my eyes developed further powers. Now it allows me to extend my vision for a little more than a kilometer and to faintly perceive spiritual energy; besides the original 360 x-ray vision."
Kamui hoped that by implying that all of the abilities of his eyes focus purely on perception, no one would think it's potentially capable of so much more. After all, Byakugan meant 'all-seeing white eyes' so no one should suspect anything more.
"Hmm. I see. But hearing you speak that, I'm now even more reluctant to let you go."
"Sir?"
"How about this. We'll make you an honorary member of the Kido Corps. This will allow you to receive my tutelage as my personal disciple, but still be capable of joining your desired division of Gotei 13. However, this would mean that you'll still be required to go through regular procedures of graduation."
"That's… an incredibly generous offer…"
"Speak no further. It will be my last offer. I will not take no for an answer."
Kamui remembered the etiquette section in general knowledge class, and kneeled on one knee, bowing his head.
"Disciple Shirato Kamui accepts, Tsukabishi-Sensei."
Tessai looked visibly pleased, as he stroked his mustache with one hand, while the other raised his Shakujo stuff, and lightly pressed it against his new disciple's shoulder.
"Very good. Raise." After Kamui did so, Tessai still stood there, contentedly stroking his mustache. "As you're a member of Kido Corps only in name, you still have to remain at the academy. I heard that you're already excused from Kido lessons; and you are already quite skilled in your Hakudo."
"That's correct."
"Good then. I'll ask your teachers for you to be granted special exemptions from hakuda classes, and permission to leave the Academy grounds. During the three days that you'd normally spend on these classes, you'll follow me around and we'll conduct your studies."
"Please wait, sensei!"
"What is it this time? Don't tell me that you have any more objections."
Kamui cringed lightly at the displeasure in Tessai's voice. He even stopped stroking his mustache.
"Please give me two… No. One week, and I'll finish my Hakuda curriculum and gain approval for leaving the lesson myself."
Although it may have sounded stupid, and a bit out of character for Kamui who liked to search for shortcuts, but he found out that in that case, he didn't want a shortcut.
He intended to take the regular exam, beat the examiner to a pulp, and fully show Gin his superiority.
Hmmm, maybe he had some ulterior motives behind this decision, after all.
But Tessai seemed pleased for some reason if the renewed stroking of his mustache was any indicator.
"Very well. But if by next Thursday you don't accomplish this, I fully intend to go through with my previous intention."
"Thank you for understanding, Sensei."
"Hmmm, I shall take my leave. Later someone will drop some books for you to go through. We'll meet again next week. We'll also make your apprenticeship official then."
"Have a safe road, Sensei."
Kamui bowed once again to Tessai, to which he nodded and left without saying anything more.
Seeing this Kamui strengthened and took advantage of his free time, as a result of not attending Kido class headed towards his room.
He intended to finally fully utilize Innovative Clear in his training, for the first time. He looked forward to it.
While watching Bleach, I always felt that Kido Corps and Kido art were meant to be something more than they were showed, but for whatever reason Tite Kubo never went through with it. That's why I intend to make my MC focus a bit more on the art. However because it would be out of character for him to stay out of the center of the action, he will not join the Kido Corps.
There's already a division that I planned my MC on joining and I have quite a lot of ideas involving it.
Also I always felt that Tessai is an underused character.
