Disclaimer: I do not own Stargate or any of its characters. I do love to write about them though.

This story is set after "The Last Man."

I've just finished watching "The Last man," and I was thinking what could have happened if John had awakened from stasis 48,000 years in the future and had no way of getting back to his own time.

For those of you who are waiting for more chapters of "Boys' vacation," and "Becoming whole." I will definitely be finishing both stories very soon.

Chapter 1: Prologue

He was flying over the city of Atlantis, a place he thought he would never see again. The sky was a magnificent shade of blue and the rays of the sun were glistening off the ocean. The spires were as tall and alluring as he remembered them and the glass windows shone in the bright sunlight. He couldn't have been happier to be here.

He knew that something wasn't quite right; as his Spidey sense was tingling, but he chose to ignore it, because of the pure joy that he was experiencing.

Coming in closer he saw that all of his friends were standing on the control room balcony and waving to him. Teyla was there with her baby boy, Rodney, Ronon, Sam, Jennifer, Zelenka and Lorne were all there as well, and they looked happy and alive.

But still he sensed that something wasn't right, why would they all be standing around waving at him, they had seen him flying a jumper before? It was then that he realised that he wasn't in a jumper and he was flying around the city just like superman; the only difference was he was dressed in his black BDU's and not red tights and a cape.

Still he refused to accept the fact that there was something wrong, this is where he longed to be, so this was where he was going to stay. Atlantis was his city, his home and he had no desire to leave it.

Deciding that he wanted to see his friends he flew towards the balcony, but as he got closer his friends disappeared one by one, Teyla and her baby went first and then Ronon. Followed by Sam and then Jennifer and finally Rodney disappeared, but it wasn't the way he remembered him, it was a very old Rodney McKay.

He landed on the balcony to find that Atlantis was totally deserted. Looking back, he saw that there was steam coming off of the glistening blue ocean and the temperature was getting warmer. Suddenly the once- blue sky began to turn a garish red and the once- yellow sun was suddenly much larger and turning red.

The steamy ocean suddenly turned to bright red sand and it began to surround him, he was gasping for air as the sand engulfed him, there was sand in his eyes, ears and mouth and suddenly he couldn't breathe….

Slowly the dream faded and he was able to regain his breath, before he surrendered to the darkness of never-ending sleep. He would awaken at a designated time and then he would continue his journey home to Atlantis where he would see the spires and glistening ocean once more. It wasn't the first dream he'd had of his home and it wouldn't be the last.

His name was John Sheppard and for now he was a man out of his time.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

They came to Atlantis one last time, they knew that the planet didn't have much longer as very soon it would be engulfed by the outer layers of gas from the dying sun. They needed to revel in the ancient city of the ancestors one last time.

The city had been deserted for eons, but every hundred years or so and expedition would travel to this once magnificent city to remember the race that had built it and pay their respects to the humans who had inhabited it for a short time nearly 50,000 years ago.

Atlantis had been abandoned in the last Great War between the humans and the one their ancestors called Michael. Michael and his army of human/wraith hybrids had decimated countless worlds, killing wraith and humans alike and the virus that he had inflicted on the peoples of the Pegasus galaxy had killed millions. Eventually Michael and his hybrids had left the galaxy, looking for more worlds to conquer and the people who had been living on Atlantis had returned to their home planet of Earth.

The galaxy that the humans of earth and Michael left behind, was in a pitiful state and it took hundreds of years for the people of the Pegasus galaxy to begin to recover. The few wraith that were left went into hibernation and eventually they either died off, or left the galaxy looking for richer feeding grounds. Basically, there wasn't a big enough food supply in the Pegasus galaxy to sustain the wraith long term.

Slowly the survivors had used the gate system to make their way to worlds that were still liveable. What little skill and knowledge they had left, they put to finding other survivors, growing food and hunting wild animals. Those with the ability to build, spent most of their time building settlements on habitable worlds.

The war lasted hundreds of years, but even that was a fraction of time compared to how long the ancient city had lasted, standing tall and proud as a monument to its builders that had died out or ascended around 60,000 years ago.

These days the humans of Pegasus had technology that rivalled the Ancients and the people of earth who had inhabited the city for a short time. They had starships that travelled great distances through hyperspace, although they had not visited earth in countless generations, or ever gone looking for the wraith. They had cities that were as magnificent as Atlantis had once been and they lived in a galaxy of peace.

It was a hundred years after the war had ended that the people of the galaxy had come together to form a coalition of planets. It was something that was in its early stages before the war to end all wars broke out; at least that's what history had named the great war. It was the last major war that the galaxy had fought, there had been some minor skirmishes in the years that followed, but nothing compared to the war against Michael.

The coalition of planets had quickly brought stability to a galaxy that was vulnerable. If it hadn't the factions that were beginning to form, would had killed each other off, quite possibly wiping out the last remaining humans of the Pegasus galaxy.

But today they were on the final expedition to explore the Ancient city of Atlantis, to salvage what they could for posterity's sake.
