Murmurs filled the hallways of Beacon as Wayle Tyran strode through them, accompanied by Latune. Even if there was no concrete information, rumours and titbits about the recent defeat of the White Fang had already placed the mysterious youth as the head of the newly risen Army of Union.
While there were those that could sympathise with the ideals held forth by the group, there was still the issue were they were not recognised by the governments around, and as such just as much criminals as the White Fang.
With this knowledge in mind, many were surprised to see him back at Beacon, seeing as there was a good chance the Council or Atlesian Army would want him taken into custody until they could resolve the issue.
Of course, the politically savvy knew very well that chances were high the only resolution that the governments would accept was the dissolution of the group and judgement of its most prominent members for treason and whatever other wonderful charges they could think of.
Of course, despite all of this, Wayle was unperturbed. He had no reason to believe anyone in Beacon would make a move against him at that moment. Maybe if a warrant had been placed upon him, but not before that.
And even if they did, he held supreme confidence that he could handle the situation, and the confident aura that surrounded him told others that.
Besides, he had friends to see.
And first, would be visiting those who had been hospitalized, starting with Jaune.
While the boy was hardly a close friend, Wayle found that he couldn't ignore that the poor naïve yet hardworking boy had been put to hospital. Mainly because, frankly, even he wanted the guy to find some success, especially now that he had started putting in the effort.
The Sith smiled in pleased surprise as they approached Jaune's room, startling slightly his apprentice.
As he entered through the open door he knocked upon it, drawing the attention of the people inside.
"Wh- Wayle?!" Jaune exclaimed astonished as he saw who had intruded.
Next to his bed Ruby turned her head in surprise as well as she sat there. She looked mostly fine, although judging by the slight stiffness in her movements she had yet to fully recover.
"Oh! Hiya Wayle! When did you get back?" She asked, incredulity still apparent in her voice.
"Just now. I heard both you and Jaune had been hospitalized and decided to pay a visit as soon as I returned." Wayle replied pleasantly. "Still, I had not expected that you were allowed to walk around already Ruby, although it most certainly saves me the time of visiting you as well to find you here."
The source of his pleasant surprise had been Ruby's presence in the room, as it indicated she could already move around a bit and was well on her way to recovery and it saved him the time to go visit, as he had just said.
"Um… Is it really okay for you to come here?" Jaune asked wonderingly once he had recovered from his surprise. "I mean with all that's going on I thought… well… you know…"
"That I might get into trouble?" The young Force-user said as he took a seat. "I doubt it, and even if something were to happen I am confident in my ability to get out of it, with Latune in tow. Which reminds me."
He turned in his seat to look towards the door, knowing full well that said girl had stayed outside for whatever reason.
"Latune, come in here and greet them. It would be a shame if you didn't after all."
He could sense her hesitation, and he could see it as her head poked into the door frame. Not enough to reveal her to the other two, but enough that Wayle could see her.
After a few moments of this, she finally entered fully, a slightly apologetic expression on her face.
"Hello Ruby, Jaune." The petite girl said.
"Hi Latune. You were here too?" The young leader of the RWBY answered.
"Yes. I- I'm sorry Jaune, I… heard of your teams predicament yet… yet I still choose to pursue Mercury. I'm sorry…" Latune said, bowing her head apologetically.
"Oh… Well… it's alright. You had no reason to go help us, and we should have been able to take care of ourselves." Jaune responded, a surprisingly understanding expression adorning his features.
"Thank you. It bothered me greatly that you were hospitalized after the battle, and I wondered if I could have prevented it…" The apprentice smiled shyly.
Wayle could have sworn he heard a small 'hng' sound coming from Ruby's direction, and when he looked in said direction he saw the young team-leader clenching her fists slightly while blushing a bit.
He wasn't sure how to process that information, and he decided to ignore the surface thought and emotion that crossed the red-haired girls mind.
"I see. Good for you Latune." The young Sith said, taking his mind of the previous revelation. "So, Jaune, what happened exactly? I never heard the details."
Of course, he could still clearly see the bandaging that covered his entire right shoulder.
"Well… My shoulder got wrecked in the fight…" The blonde awkwardly answered, but Wayle could sense the turbulent emotions that swirled underneath. But after a short while of this, the hand that had been awkwardly scratching the back of his head fell away, and the teen asked in a low voice. "Do you ever get used to killing people?"
Wayle's eyes narrowed slightly at this question.
"I see… I would say that the answer to your question varies from person to person. Some, revel in it, and don't even need to get used to it, and some… probably never will." He adjusted his posture as his features became serious. "I don't think a person like you will, or should, for that matter, get used to it."
"I see… Then what about you?" The troubled teen asked as he sunk into thought.
"To my great horror, somewhere along the way, I got used to it." The Sith brooded slightly as he reminisced. "You are better off not getting used to it." He shook his head.
The other people present in the room looked a bit perturbed about his choice of words, while the girls present might also have been perturbed by the sudden, and unpleasant, subject.
"On another note, Jaune, is your shoulder going to be okay?" Latune said, trying to divert the subject a bit.
"Oh, good, I was intending to ask that as well. Thank you Latune." Wayle said, quite happy to move on.
"Eh? Oh, right… this…" A slightly startled Jaune responded and indicated his bandaged shoulder. "This'll heal, but it's gonna take a while. Which is kind of a bummer."
The young boy gave a saddened smile.
The Sith sighed. "Such is the lot of the warrior. I will hope for a swift recovery, but for now we must go. I still have business to attend to after all."
With these words he rose from his seat.
"Bye Wayle! See you later! You too Latune!" Ruby exclaimed as the two left the room.
And as he stepped out of the room he could easily see the oncoming stern professor heading for them with determined, if a bit shaky, steps.
-Break—
"Wayle, I must ask, you do realize that your current actions can be seen as criminal, no?" Ozpin asked, his eyes locked squarely with the teen's.
"Of course, headmaster, I realize that I might have been a bit too… zealous in setting up my group of followers. But I assure you, that all of my efforts are for the good of the peoples of Remnant." The youth answered nonchalantly. "If all goes well they will do little more than volunteer work…"
"But if it does not they will back you up with their military might." The headmaster of Beacon added.
"An astute observation of you headmaster. I am surprised you will recognize them as a militarily capable force."
"I merely recognize them for what they are. Wayle, will you not leave this path? You cannot change our society that quickly." The grey-haired man pleaded.
"You know as well as I that I can impossibly abandon my path now. Too much is at stake here. I am too far invested already."
"I have dealt with the politics of Remnant for quite some time, and I know with absolute certainty that they see you as a threat, and that the Atlesian Military will, beyond the shadow of a doubt attack you when you make your move."
"I am well aware of this fact, and, unfortunately for Atlas, I will not back down. The question is… where do you stand, Ozpin?"
"I will not put the children into danger again, as long as you don't endanger us all. But I'm afraid that I will not be able to keep you at the school."
The Sith smiled.
"Good, I truly believe that the Huntsmen and Huntresses of this prestigious academy should keep out of this matter, and instead focus on protecting all of us from the Grimm, as is their first and foremost duty. Am I wrong?"
"I feel the same way. What I cannot understand is why you would choose to do something like this, after having tried so hard to keep a low profile and stay out of things."
"I saw the ugly truth. The Faunus are miserable, which gave rise to the White Fang. They are oppressed, discriminated against and given poor options, either because no one will hire them or because no one will let them gain education. It is an issue that needs addressing, or a new White Fang will be born, and then another, and another until this issue is resolved, either through the extinction of all peoples of Remnant by the Grimm, or the revolution succeeds, in which case the Humans will be subjected to the same situation the Faunus were…"
"A never-ending cycle that can only end in one way…"
"So you do understand. I will not ask that you aid me, for I understand that you have long since been mired into the politics, and with your duties as a Huntsman…"
"I cannot possibly leave them now. But I do not agree with you choice of methods for changing the situation."
"I never expected you to. Frankly, even I doubt myself. But this is the only way I can think of. It is nice that there are those around that disagree, and look for another way. I can only hope that if I fail, someone like you can find a way, a better way. Oh, and as for the school, while it is a shame, I was prepared to leave it either way, as from now on I will be getting into the political field a bit. So I guess this is farewell for now…"
The young man turned to leave.
"Wait. Do you plan to impose your own hegemony over Remnant?"
"If it comes to that, I will. But preferably not. I do after all prefer scholarly pursuits."
With this the youth left.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the elevator the stern professor of Beacon, Glynda Goodwitch and the Apprentice of Wayle Tyran, Latune Subbota were glaring at each other as they waited for their superiors to finish their discussion.
Author's notes: Oh hey look. I'm alive here too. And here I thought I would be able to get this done sometime last week... And then everything said nope and I had massive writer's block. Again. Sorry if this is a bit boring, but this is what came out. I suppose you could call it set up for things to come. I suppose part of my inability to finish this is because I never was able to watch beyond the first episode of Volume 3. I don't know what happened. I saw the first episode and then was just completely unable to continue. Oh well. I'll try to watch it soon, since I need to get up to date with the characters and lore. Have they revealed the Council yet, or are they still just a shadowy council of anonymity?
Also, on an unrelated note, it's crazy just how many mistakes you find when you re-read your own story, sometimes I seriously wonder how these things happened. But anyway, leave a review telling me what you thought about the chapter and feel free to point out any mistakes you see.
I hope you enjoyed and that you have a nice day.
