Chapter 4: Odds
Rinka Hayami
Quirk: Freeze/Immobulus
When activated, she can freeze the movement of anything within her field of vision. Like Aizawa's quirk, one of it's downsides was her need to keep her eyes open to keep targets immobile.
Hayami watched in silence as the first of her classmates went up and picked their favored ammos for the task.
They were told they could pick as many as they could carry and need, well, as assassins they were taught to always be prepared. And there was indeed an abundance of armory in front of them, so taking three or four choice weapons wouldn't be an issue as long as they could wield it effectively. Despite the abundance, however, there still ain't a lot of choices. The only weapons in front of them are rubber knives, guns and rifles that they've used back in the assassination classroom, and a few handy-dandy tools here and there—like some ropes. At least they all are efficient in handling said weapons.
The rules of the practical had somehow limited their information gathering and groundwork for foolproof preparations. But, they would make do. Great assassins are versatile and could easily adapt.
A solid assassination plan would still be the better course of action, though. They can't deny that.
After watching Okano pick up a knife and a handgun, Hayami decided she wanted to go up next. So she walked towards the ammo box and took in all the non lethal weapons in front of her. She picked up a handgun first, checking if it's loaded with the red paint pellets before taking a strap, she was thankful they also provided, and used it to strap the handgun on her left thigh.
She went on to the next box and picked up a sniping rifle, also checking if it's loaded before deftly lifting it up to check the scope's lenses against her sight.
She nodded to herself once she was satisfied and was about to turn around when her sight caught the few pro heroes watching her silently. It was obvious that they are evaluating them; based on their choices of weapons, the pro heroes would have had grasped an idea of their preferred assassination tactics. Hayami frowned at the realization. Another disadvantage on her and her classmates' part.
Deciding to up her arsenals a bit more, she picked up another handgun and strap attaching it to her other thigh.
She went back to the crowd of her classmates once she was done and watched silently as others followed on choosing.
She watched Mimura pick up a rubber knife and a handgun. Followed by Nakamura who opted to pick up the same amount of rubber knife and two handguns she strapped on each of her thighs. She was watching Kurahashi walk towards the boxes when she heard Chiba's voice beside her.
"This fancy school lives up to its name. Training grounds shaped as various possible environments?" She's only just realizing the boy actually stood beside her.
'He's getting better.' She told herself, 'he hid his presence well.'
Deciding to keep the compliments to herself, she replied in a monotone. "Yeah," she agreed with him. "Now, I think we need to do our best. I mean, we could improve more within the school's curriculum."
She felt him turn his head to look at her, but she kept her eyes steady, watching as Nagisa steps up in front of the boxes after Kurahashi.
"We should." He agreed.
It was then when everyone noticed the tension on Nagisa's shoulders. All of them waited in baited silence for Nagisa to pick up a weapon. Hayami wouldn't mind whatever Nagisa would pick, but as she watched their top assassin stood silently, contemplating in front of the boxes, she understood. Uncertainty, sadness, and guilt rolled off of him like waves. Nagisa was always easy to read, but at the same time, he wasn't. While she couldn't see anything from the way his face morphed into one of a dull mask, his eyes conveyed the different emotions swirling within him.
Everyone of them has an idea of whatever's causing his silent distress, but don't know how to address it.
Hayami watched as Nagisa picked up a handgun and strapped it on his thighs, but when she saw the hesitation as her classmate's hand hovered above the rubber knives, she felt her heart clench. There was a palpable spike of tension within their group as all of them seem to notice that small action.
Nagisa still ended up picking the rubber knife, but Hayami's hawk-like eyes did not miss the way his hand trembled as he strapped it on his other thigh.
Slowly, the tension eased, but there are stray traces that lingered in the air around them, like the faint stench of fresh spilled blood.
No one dared to meet Nagisa as he walked towards their group. No one but the sadistic redhead, who now wore a canvass of sullenly empty eyes.
Karma met Nagisa midway on the latter's tracks towards the rest of E-class. Both of them halting in their steps as the former put his hand on the top of the smaller boy's head, forcing Nagisa to look down slightly as his blue hair casted his eyes in a shadow.
Hayami looked away from the exchange, her heart clenching at the obvious reminder that all of them are still not okay. And she knew that Nagisa was one of the few that had taken the full impact of the event revolving around the death of their teacher—he was the one who thrusted the knife after all.
The tension around them was diminished, but it wasn't exactly gone.
Karasuma watched everything unfold in tensed silence. A spike of sadness hitting him square in the guts.
He recognized the octopus as nothing but a mission. He still does, somehow he knew that that was the goal—the octopus, dead. And he prided himself with his ability to separate emotions from his work. So yes, Karasuma wasn't exactly depressed at the death of the octopus. He may be disappointed towards the fact that the one-percent likelihood of the anti-matter to cause the past assassin to blow up was ignored by the government. The government had known, of course, why else would they keep researches about it in the space station? But, Korosensei was still a huge threat, and the whole world recognizes this. Karasuma knew it would happen.
What he didn't take into account was for him to form bonds with the class responsible of the extermination of this threat. He came into their classroom stiff, all professional, and with nothing but the job at mind. Part of the job of course, was instructing a bunch of diverse junior high schoolers shunned by their own learning environment, so he needed to get along. Hours and days spent on training and teaching them, and in some odd cases—many cases than he would like—he was pushed to a corner to protect them. They were kids, still, young and promising with dreams like any other teens their age. And one night, he just found himself growing more and more attached to all of them.
'No,' he thought, 'they pulled me out from my own destructive path of pushing my emotions under the rug.' They helped him come out of his thick shell of a profession. They made him soft, and frankly, he regrets nothing.
Slowly, a twinge of disappointment towards himself rose in the pit of his stomach. The class helped him with rediscovering his buried feelings, how come he didn't notice theirs?
Was he too busy with the formalities and paperwork that came after the success of the assassination? Was he neglecting the students? His students?
Watching Nagisa's hand hover hesitantly above the rubber knife and his classmates' masks of feign indifference, Karasuma realized just how much he was neglecting them. Of course, after that night, he worried if they were all alright; but now, he berates himself for boldly assuming that they all are okay. How could he think that? How could he forget the fact that they're still kids thrown into the task of killing what they first believed as a monster? How could E class be okay after finally successfully killing the first teacher—after all those years—who believed in them?
Yuzuki Fuwa
Yuma Isogai
Rinka Hayami
Taiga Okajima
Masayoshi Kimura
Ritsu took care of the randomization of the groups of five that would enter the testing facility that turned out to be a flawless fake city.
Hayami and the class were all expecting a fake city as they've been told, but they are not expecting it to be this flawless. Hayami roamed her eyes in awe across the few buildings and infrastructures that her eyes could cover from outside the now open gate.
The pro-heroes and Karasuma are already within the city, and the class are waiting for them to scatter in ten minutes before the first group of five walk in.
"So, are we going in as a team or independently?" It was Kimura who asked between their group. The other four acknowledged his question by looking at each other.
"I believe this practical exam is meant for us to take individually…" Hayami started slowly, her eyes going back to look at the fake city in front of them. The others have noticed that her statement wasn't finished yet, so they waited for a few seconds before she decided to continue, "but, there's a lot of odds against us, not just the fact that they're pro-heroes and experienced. We're assassins, and then they're testing us to face them head on. It wasn't quite right."
"I get you." Fuwa agreed, "we're not meant to be expected
"We're not meant to be expected, right. But, we could be, I mean Korosensei expected us to kill him all year, so all we gotta do is be more surprising." There was a pause, and most of the class, especially the other four within the first five stared bewildered at Okajima when he spoke.
"Okajima said something decent." Maehara was the one who voiced all of their thoughts. "That's surprising."
"He wasn't wrong though." Kataoka shrugged, finally getting out of her initial shock from Okajima's out-of-character words.
"Yes, he wasn't." Kimura agreed, "so while they're probably expecting us to go independently, we could team up and take down a target for us one by one."
Some of the class seem to agree but the others have different thoughts.
"You're forgetting someone." Isogai noted looking at the four of them critically.
"Mr. Karasuma." Nagisa supplied, to which their class president nodded to. "He definitely knows us well, so he expects most of the groups, if not all, would go in as teams. He could have warned them beforehand."
"Hayami was still right though." Everyone turned to look at Itona when he joined in on the exchange. "This test is meant to assess us individually, so if we want to pass with flying colors we need to show our strengths independently, but she was also right that there's quite a number of odds against us. Also, I don't know if they expect us to know but they added one not-so popular pro-hero as a target as if testing our capabilities to deal with surprises."
"Oh yeah, that scruffy man carrying the principal earlier, he looked so done with the world." Kurahashi agreed to Itona's words, while the lot of them had an idea about what the other pro-heroes are like; their quirks, fighting styles and preferred fighting environments, most of them are probably wondering who and how the scruffy man works.
"Yeah, that pro-hero's definitely not much notable. I haven't heard of him. If I have to guess, it's highly likely that he's an underground hero." Kayano seconded, "whatever his fighting style and quirk would definitely be a surprise. Oh man, I wished I researched underground pro-heroes too."
"Nah, don't need to get bummed if you don't know anything about him. His whole work definitely depends on his non-existing popularity." Maehara commented, "still, at this fact, we're at a little disadvantage."
"You know him, Maehara?" Itona queried.
"No," Maehara shrugged, "I just assumed, because he's definitely an underground hero."
"Well, yeah, most underground heroes strive with the anonymity. There's a few underground pros that's still known at the limelight. But, Eraserhead was one who definitely thrives through the anonymity." Everyone turned to look at Nakamura expectantly when she spoke.
"Eraserhead." Karma repeated the Hero Name before smirking and turning to look at Nakamura; "of course, Nakamura would have heard of him. So, what about him? How does he fight?" He asked the question that everyone in their group are dying to know at the moment.
"His quirk was Erasure, basically he erases quirks when he looks at them. So it's not much of a disadvantage, except of course to our classmates with quirks. The activation of his quirk works like Hayami's so don't let him see you."
"That, but Ritsu and I also wanted to add that his fighting styles were a little close to ours. He definitely does not engage on head-on fights, his usual goal was to incapacitate his targets by using his quirk before the target even finds out what hit them." Itona added to Nakamura's words while looking at his phone, Ritsu had provided those information for them.
"So he's just as sneaky?"
"Yes, basically."
Itona walked towards the huddle of the first five, "Here." He said offering five small wireless-looking-earplugs on his open palm.
The majority of the class gasped at the devices. Those were communication devices, and they weren't dumb not to recognize those.
"You could go in and spread individually, and notify each other for help or if ever the targets are also teaming up, it would be easier for you all to rendezvous if needed." Itona explained.
"Where did you get that?" Nagisa exclaimed, obviously curious but his surprise was much more evident in his voice.
"Yeah, also, wouldn't we be cheating if ever we use those?" Kurahashi asked, mirroring Nagisa's curiosity, but she was able to suppress her surprise better than the blue-haired male.
"Cheating? Nah, we're just tipping the scales a little bit; and besides, we're assassins, we don't necessarily need to follow rules, and when you think about it, there's no rules given about using comms and teaming up. I say, we exploit the absence of those rules." Karma comments, nodding his approval towards Itona.
"Also, Ritsu and I were working on these. We only made eight so far and we plan to make one for each of us. Besides, Ritsu also had to be with us somehow, so there. All of those comms are connected already, and to Ritsu too. The built in microphone was amplified so it would be able to catch even the faintest of your whispers if ever you all need to not make any noise. And speakers are low enough you would only hear it when it's directly in your ears. Thankfully, I decided to bring all those eight today." There was a short pause, "and oh, bring your phones, Ritsu would help."
Everyone stared at Itona, mouth agape and in disbelief, "you made this?"
Itona rolled his eyes, "Ritsu and I, yes."
"That's cool." Hayami commented picking one up from his open hand and putting it on her left ear. The other four followed her actions. The device was small and it was built definitely as earplugs, from what Hayami could tell the outer covering of it were also made of rubber-like material to avoid accidents and possibilities of it falling off of the user's ear. It was well built, and the five won't hide their awe.
Horibe Itona, a teen just out of Junior High School, with the help of an AI—Ritsu, was able to build something like this.
"It wasn't very surprising," The class turned to Terasaka when he spoke, "it's Itona, he made a remote controlled anti-sensei BB tank, and a drone from scraps of old computer parts."
"Right." Everyone agreed.
"Alright, brats, I'll be the announcer here for today... ten minutes is up, the first five, step in." A voice announced through the speakers, the class knew so well.
Hayami then figuring out why their English teacher was with them. So, she had some form of task and role on this test.
She smiled softly while the majority of the class snickered or chuckled at their former teacher's antics.
"Ms. Bitch would probably never change." Maehara commented to which the majority agreed.
A series of goodlucks were sent to the first group five as they stood in front of the gate to which they smiled at.
"Goodluck, do your best." Chiba muttered in his normal monotone voice, standing beside her, letting only Hayami to hear who simply nodded as a reply.
The first thing Hayami did when she entered the made-up city was to move up from level ground and find a good vantage point. So she skipped over buildings and rooftops, her eyes searching for targets.
Another thing she noticed while parkouring over rooftops were the sounds of her classmates' breathing and movements. She could hear their feet thudding as they run or jump on the concrete ground.
"Wow!" Fuwa was the first on their group to acknowledge this. "Itona wasn't lying when he said we could hear even the faintest of whispers. We could practically hear everyone breathing."
"Itona designed it like that, so we could also monitor each other if ever we're in a position where we cannot talk." Ritsu supplied through their earpieces.
Hayami wasn't able to suppress her awe. "It's awesome." She commented softly before landing on another rooftop with a roll.
Everyone silently agreed and they continued on their ways to search for targets.
It didn't take long, for Hayami. Keeping herself and bloodlust hidden, she watched on top of a six storey building as two of the targets are walking by an alley. She recognized them as Present Mic and that scruffy underground hero, she only knew about earlier—Eraserhead.
Although, it was obvious that they were on high alert with their surroundings, Hayami was a hundred percent certain she was not yet found.
"I found two targets. Eraserhead and Present Mic are together." She spoke softly through the comms as she lowered herself and positioned the rifle in front of her.
"I'm going to you, where are you?" Kimura was the one who responded.
"Not exactly sure but I'm on a rooftop of a six storey. I was at least 300 meters from the starting point, I think."
"Stand your ground while I figure out how to find you."
"Itona forgot to mention a built in GPS with the earpiece." They paused from Ritsu's words. "I know all of your coordinates, Kimura, Hayami is 35 degrees on your east about 237 meters. And Isogai was a hundred meters heading straight to your direction."
Internally, it finally made sense to Hayami why Itona had told them to bring their phones. Hayami fished hers out of her pocket and saw blank gridlines with five scattered blinking dots, two of which are stationary, she assumed one was her. Hayami briefly wondered why the map was only on grids, before drawing her focus back on her goal. It wasn't as sophisticated as the past blueprints that Ritsu have had presented them.
She peeked at her scope to make sure that the targets are still within her range. They were on alert, but they weren't walking too fast. They seem to be engaging in some sort of conversation.
Isogai perked up from hearing his name, "I was heading towards who?"
Ritsu replied, "To Hayami."
"Huh, well then, I am tailing Mr. Karasuma with a decent amount of interval, so Hayami, he might reach you before I would."
There was a brief spike of panic that hit Hayami, but she only took a deep breath to calm herself. She needs to be calm. Panicking won't help her at the moment.
"Noted." She replied in a monotone, expertly masking her growing nerves.
"And, oh, I figured you'd be above ground, so is he." Hayami wasn't able to suppress a frustrated sigh from escaping her. Okajima was the one who picked up her frustration.
He chuckled, commenting through the comms, he addressed the President, "You really have to tell that as an afterthought, Pres?"
"Eh, sorry, it slipped my mind."
Hayami closed her eyes and inhaled softly, soothing her nerves. When she opened them, it was cast in such focus and determination. The goal was to kill one target.
She lined her sight through the scope of her rifle and took aim. She figured Mr. Karasuma was already closing in, and the best course for now was to secure her kill before facing her former PE instructor.
If she got lucky, Isogai or Kimura would come for her aid in the perfect moment—oh, she hopes they would. Then they'll have each other.
She took a deep breath and fired two consecutive shots. The first hit its target, just as planned on the back of his head with a resounding 'splat' of red paint; while the second one was barely dodged by the other. He still dodged though, which Hayami kind of expected.
She fired a third which was expertly dodged by the scruffed hero.
An announcement echoed through the speakers, Professor Bitch's voice informing everyone within the fake city and the people outside the entrance that a target was killed. Hayami didn't pay much attention to it, because she was preoccupied at the moment.
Before she could fire the fourth shot, Eraserhead was running to her direction. Having no other choice, she quickly and efficiently activated her quirk. A familiar cool sensation blanketing her eyes as she stared at her target immobilizing him. Hayami remembered Nakamura's rundown about his quirk activation working like hers. So before he could activate his quirk on her she moved to the side, an angle out of his line of sight, unblinking without taking her eyes off of him.
She wasn't used to keeping her eyes open for long periods of time, she could feel the edges of her eyes were starting to sting slightly, it was still bearable though so she kept at it.
"I immobilized Eraserhead with my quirk, whoever's near go for the kill." She spoke through the comms, she figured she could take a shot on him herself, but the goal was to take out one target and there are only five targets and five assassins in the field.
"I'm close." Kimura was the one who responded.
Before Hayami could confirm, she heard Isogai's call on her through the comms a little frantic and warning.
"Hayami!"
She felt movement behind her, and the year's worth of training allowed her to roll to the side and dodge a kick from Mr. Karasuma.
"I lost hold on Eraserhead." She spoke, warning Kimura whom she knew would approach.
"Noted." She heard him respond before she forced her body to jump backwards to avoid a blow to her stomach. She took another roll to her left, and ducked a punch.
"Where did you all get the comms?" He asked Hayami, he wasn't able to mask the surprise and amusement from his voice. It made Hayami swell with pride towards the ability of her classmates. She flashed her former instructor a proud smirk.
"We're assassins, we have our ways."
Mr. Karasuma smirked before forcing down his amusement, made another move to attack and all Hayami did was dodge. His punches and kicks are consecutive but Hayami can't help but notice how he was slower than he was with past training sessions. Those weights really do their jobs.
Despite knowing that she could have easily blocked his punches she resorted to dodging them. He may be slower, but the momentum of his attacks were still fast enough to do damage, especially with the additional weights.
Hayami did a backflip to avoid a spinning kick and she landed on the cemented rooftop in a crouch. Her eyes watching Mr. Karasuma's next movements. She noticed Isogai sneaking from behind him, he discreetly nodded at her.
"Your quirk, now!" Not thinking twice she blinked to follow their class president's instructions. She understood his plans—for her to use her quirk and immobilized the government agent. So imagine her surprise when she didn't feel that cool sensation—she associates with her quirk's activation—crawl on her eyes.
"Eraserhead." She hissed.
Hello everyone!
My apology note wasn't saved on the first try lol.So, I'll repeat it again.
I apologize in advance because I wouldn't be able to promise scheduled updates. School is on my tail so, really getting in time to write was a little challenging. I don't want to rush the chapters either, so my writing time was spread out on whenever I have a moment and motivation—the responses and appreciation from all of you guys are enough though.
Thank you for all the reviews and appreciation from all of you guys! Also, just wanted to share how Hayami's quirk was inspired by the Immobulus charm in Harry Potter.
That's all, I think.
Stay safe!
Hope you're all doing fine!
