Chapter 2: Death and Rebirth
Evening
The day after the negotiations with Rias Gremory, Artorias, Xenovia, Irina, Issei, and Koneko went out to find Kiba after he ran off to seek his vengeance.
Flashback
"Kiba, Wait!" Rias pleaded. "Apologies, Buchou. But, I finally remembered the reason I fight." The Knight said. "Get back here, Yuuto Kiba!" The red-haired king called out.
Flashback End
While they were walking, something ambushed them. By his garb he was a Stray Exorcist. He had white hair, and a crazy look in his eyes. "Freed Selzen…" Artorias growled with his words practically drenched in venom. "Oh, my, Artorias-kun~ don't look at me like that! I might get pregnant!" He said with his filthy mouth. (AN: Good God I hate Freed!) Artorias drew Tyrfing from its scabbard and dashed towards the Stray Exorcist with a downward swing, which was blocked by what looked like a Levin Sword, but more regal-looking. "Phew. If I didn't have this, I'd be dead. Meet Excalibur Rapidly-chan. Although I really don't like that name, so I just call it the Super-Fast Sword." Everyone's eyes widened. "FREED!" a new voice was heard. Artorias dodged just in time for Kiba to start hacking away at Freed. "Damn. I can't fight two fast guys, even with my Excalibur. So I'll take my leave. Bye, Shitty devils! Bye Exorcists!" Everyone relaxed as the put away their weapons. However, Kiba continued to chase after him.
"Wait!" Artorias called out, but the Gremory Knight was already gone. "Xenovia, Irina. Follow Kiba. Issei, Koneko. Contact Rias." The Crusader's Scion said. "I'm afraid I can't let you do that." Called a voice. Looking up, everyone saw the owner of the voice. Pale skin, dark red eyes, but most importantly, 10 wings.
Everyone went pale at the sight of the threat above them. "Issei!" Rias called as she teleported to the group's location. "Hello, Miss Gremory. Lovely evening. Your hair is such a beautiful shade of red. So much so that it makes me sick!" The Fallen sneered. "Kokabiel…" Rias glared. "What are you doing? You know your actions will reignite the war between the Biblical Factions!" Kokabiel grinned like a madman. "Exactly. I aim to restart the Great War! If I stole the Excaliburs, heaven will get involved, and if I kill the Devil Kings' Sisters they'll start attacking as well, especially Leviathan."
Everyone paled. "You're a psychopath!" Artorias yelled. "I'm going to start rampaging around town, starting with your school. Just thought I'd let you know." The Warmonger then flew off toward the direction of Kuoh Academy.
"We'd better go! Kiba, Xenovia, and Irina chased after Freed going the same way!" Rias paled, then steeled her determination. "Right! I'll get everyone together. Artorias. We'll meet you at the school!" Nodding, Artorias went to where his comrades and lover were. Xenovia… please be okay! He thought.
Time Skip
"So you've arrived, Gremory. Who's coming? Sirzechs or Serafall?" Kokabiel asked. "It's just us, Kokabiel. We're here to stall you until Onii-Sama gets here." Everyone prepared for battle. "I see. That's disappointing." With a wave of his hand, the Warmonger called upon his pet. "Cerberus! Time for dinner!" Everyone's eyes widened. "The Guard Dog of Hades?!" Akeno exclaimed. Then, two more magic circles opened up to reveal Kiba and Irina, bloodied and beaten.
"Kiba/Kiba-Senpai/Irina!" Everyone called out as the tan toward them.
Play OST: Fire Emblem Echoes - Fell God's Tempest
"You guys handle Cerberus! I'll take on Kokabiel! Asia-chan! Heal Kiba and Irina!" Artorias commanded. Drawing Tyrfing, the Scion began casting a White Magic spell as he started levitating.
[FLOAT!]
He then began charging towards Kokabiel, who was ready to counterattack with a light Spear. "Ah, the Scion of Light! The church must be taking this seriously." Kokabiel sneered. "Shut up! Your path of war ends here, you filthy Crow!" Artorias and the Fallen Leader exchanged blow after blow. Artorias launched a forward thrust, but was dodged by Kokabiel, whose cheek was grazed.
The Fallen Angel countered with a rapid barrage of thrusts, each one cutting and stabbing the Exorcist. Artorias charged his blade with holy light, performing a twisting motion upwards, which launched Kokabiel into a stunlock, and thrust Tyrfing diagonally upward. [Piercing Flash! LIGHT BLAST!] The attack ran through its target and burned the Fallen Angel with intense holy light. This made Kokabiel angry. He had patches of burns on parts of his arms and face, but other than that, he was relatively unharmed.
With the rest of the group
Akeno and Rias pelted Cerberus with magic, Rias with her PoD, Akeno with her Holy Lightning. Issei and Xenovia pounded the bad boi into the ground, Issei with his Boosted Gear, Xenovia with her Excalibur Destruction. Even with all of that, Cerberus just refused to go down. "Buchou! I wish to try something!" Akeno called out to her King. "You might want to back away." She then began to chant.
[I Dwell Amidst the Abounding Light of Heaven!]
[Thou Stand at the Gates of Hell]
[Come Forth Divine Lightning!]
Several magic circles surround Cerberus as lightning magic, pure white in color, channelled through the sigils and upwards towards a bigger one. "I'll end this now! [Indignation]!" As soon as she called out, a single lightning bolt came down and struck Cerberus, charring the doggo, killing it instantly.
BGM OFF
Kokabiel looked on in surprise. "So it's you who did that spell, Daughter of Barakiel." The Warmonger sneered. "Don't put me in the same sentence as that creature!" Akeno called out. "It is done! A voice was heard. It belonged to a fat balding priest, who had a sword floating above a magic circle. "Excalibur is complete!" The fat pig exclaimed. "Valper… Galilei…!" Kiba called out. He was barely standing, using his Sword Birth sword to stand. "I am a survivor of the Holy Sword Project!" The now named Valper raised an eyebrow. "Hoh? Well if it isn't the failure I failed to dispose of." He sneered. "How many… How many of my comrades died just for your sick experiments?! We were told that we were doing this for Him… that God would help us endure!" The Knight cried out.
"You were all failures, but I had found a way to extract the Holy Elements in humans and crystalize them in these gems." Valper pulled out a blue crystal filled with holy light. "With this, even ordinary people could wield Holy Swords." Xenovia eyed the crystal. "The things they give us to test out compatibility with Holy Swords!" The fat pig then tossed the crystal to Kiba. "Here. This is the last one." Kiba caught the gem, holding it to his chest. "Everyone… I'm sorry."
It's okay, Isaiah.
Ghosts surrounded Kiba, his eyes threatening to leak.
We never wanted you to avenge us.
We just wanted you to live on.
So please. Let it go.
And live on!
Because we will always be a family.

The ghosts disappeared, along with the crystal, as Kiba began glowing with a soft white light.
[He's done it.] Ddraig said. "What do you mean?" Issei asked. [Sacred Gears respond to the wielder's emotions. As their wielders undergo strong feelings, their Sacred Gears evolve in response to those feelings, breaking the boundaries of the natural world. This is what's known as the Balance Breaker.] Kiba's determination grew stronger. "Respond to my feelings, SWORD BIRTH!" Kiba summoned his Sword Birth, and from it, a new blade appeared. "This is my Balance Breaker: Sword of the Bertrayer. A blade that combines Holy and Demonic Powers together! And now, you shall receive it's full power, Valper Galilei!" The Knight called out. "I-impossible! Holy and Demonic properties cannot exist together!" The "priest" stated. "Since everyone is pulling out their best, allow me to as well! Saint Peter, Saint Basil, Saint Denis, Holy Mother Mary who dwell within this blade! From your chains I release thee! Durandal!" From a pocket dimension, Xenovia pulled out a massive Holy Sword. It was a claymore, blue and Gold in color. "No! We haven't even found anyone who can artificially wield Durandal!" Valper cried. "That's because there isn't. Unlike those Artificially wielders, I am a natural-born Wielder of Durandal." Xenovia stated proudly. "That's my girl!" Artorias called out, making Xenovia blush like a tomato.
"I see! If this is the case, with the emergence of a Holy-Demon sword, then that means that not only have the Satans died, but God has also-" he got no further. There was a Light Spear planted in Valper's chest, courtesy of Kokabiel. "Oh, Valper. You weren't supposed to figure that out yet." Kokabiel then called down a pillar of tainted light, and vaporized the fat pig.
"Red Dragon Emperor! Boost yourself to the maximum and transfer it to this Exorcist here." The Warmonger called out. "What are you playing at, you filthy Crow?" Artorias growled. "I wish to witness the full might of the Son of Deirdre." Artorias' eyes widened. "How do you know that name?!" He demanded. Kokabiel grinned like a madman.
"I had a little fun with her of course. I held her hostage as my subordinates held your father down, and made him watch as I defiled his bride. Then I killed them both." Asia and Artorias' pupils shrunk to the size of a grain of salt. "I broke her, telling her of how her master died. She was such a believer, it broke he immediately." One of Kokabiel's subordinates tried to stop him. "No! You can't! That info is kept hidden for a reason-" Kokabiel silenced his treasonous underling! "Yeah, well I'm starting a war do it doesn't matter! You see, during the War, not only did the Satans die, but so did God himself." The Warmonger was now cackling like a psychopath kicking a disabled kid's crutches out from under it. Everyone was shocked.
"Lies! It's all Lies! You're lying!"
"Then… Where do the blessings come from…"
"You son of a bitch…"
Xenovia, Artorias, and Asia didn't take this news very well. The elder Argento went into a berserker rage, trying to hack Kokabiel to pieces. "You're starting to annoy me." With one missed swing of Tyrfing, Kokabiel planted a Light Spear into Artorias' chest, and tossed him like a ragdoll towards the Gremory group. "Artorias/Onii-san!" Asia and Xenovia ran toward where the Exorcist landed. He was bleeding like crazy. Asia used Twilight Healing to try to keep him alive. "Onii-san! Please! Stay with us!" She cried out. "You can't die yet, Artorias!" Xenovia cried. "Hehehehe *cough* *hack* Looks like I screwed up." Artorias laughed weakly. His pulse was getting weaker. "Better start building a coffin… Damn… I can't even take dying seriously..." Twilight Healing wasn't working fast enough. "We're here, Onii-san! Stay awake for us!" Asia and Xenovia's eyes ran like waterfalls. "So… This is how it ends..." Artorias reached his hand up trying to grasp at something.
His tears spilled from his fading green eyes. "Xenovia… A...sia… Forgive… me..." His hand dropped to his side, and he took his last breath.
Artorias Argento was dead.
"How disappointing." Kokabiel grinned. Xenovia wouldn't move, Asia was crying for what seemed like an eternity. It was as if they lost all hope.
Time Skip
Where… am I? Artorias woke up in a strange place. Standing up, he got a good look at what he was seeing. It was a single twisting dirt path, that had train tracks going down it. He followed the path downward, seeing a bunch of creepy stuff. Souls of people who died. "Welcome, young man." Came a soft voice.
He was face-to-face with a woman. She had long, flowing black hair, alabaster skin, beautiful turquoise eyes, an Onee-San smile, and assets that would make Grayfia Lucifuge jealous. She also wore a tight-fitting white kimono with a red obi
"Welcome young man, to Yomotsu Hirasaka, where soul of the dead wander. My name is Izanami, Goddess of the dead." His eyes widened. "I had been watching you during your life. You unfortunately died." She explained. "Your friends are next unless you do something." Artorias nodded in understanding. "I can give you your life back, seeing as it is not yet your time." She offered. "All you have to do is share your body with me." Artorias blinked. "...Eh?" He asked.
"Ufufufu~ not like that. Just let me possess your body. I find myself rather bored, and would like to be entertained. Just know, that if you accept my contract, you will be mine forever." Izanami spoke. "If you can give me my life back, I would be forever in your debt, Lady Izanami." And with that, the goddess of death entered Artorias' body. "And with this, you are now mine, Artorias Argento. We are bound together, body and soul." He could feel his life returning as he ascended from the depths of Izanami's domain.
With the cast
A pillar of light erupted from the Scion's body. The Gremory group had to back up from the sheer heat the light have off. As soon as the light faded, there stood Artorias, in all his glory, but with the addition of black marks on his face, silvery blue eyes, and had (死) written on his left hand.
PLAY OST: Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne - Fierce Battle
Tyrfing in hand, he pointed his blade toward his opponent. "Fallen Angel Kokabiel." He called out. "The hour of your judgement has come!" Then, he rushed forwards with a downward slash, which the Warmonger barely blocked. "Where did you get all this power!?" He demanded. His opponent did not answer as the two continued to clash, Holy Sword against Light Spear. "For my parents… for Him… for the lives you've taken… you shall receive due punishment!"
Pulling out his Shine Tome, a white and purple magic circle began carving itself under the two combatants. Artorias' wings spread, and as he held his hands over the open book, the circle activated, Sending Talismans made of holy light upward around Artorias's target. [Be engulfed in Light!] And by snapping the book closed, the sigil intensified. [Hamaon!] The Talismans of holy light continued to pierce Kokabiel, but not enough to kill him. As the light faded, the Warmonger was unconscious, and Artorias was the last one standing. "Lord Kokabiel is down! Retreat! RETREAT!" Every fallen angel under Kokabiel's command had fled the battlefield.
The Scion had powered down, returning his appearance to normal, and allowing Izanami to split from the Exorcist's person. He then collapsed from exhaustion, prompting the Goddess to catch him before he hit the dirt. "You did well, Artorias. Rest now. You've earned it."
The Gremory group plus Xenovia and Irina rushed towards Artorias and the Goddess of Death. "Well this is a fine mess." A new voice was heard. The person it belonged to was standing over Kokabiel. He was clad in white scale mail armor that looked almost exactly like Issei's, except for the blue wings. "He's still alive, so that's something, I guess." Picking up his target, the White One prepared to fly off.
[Are you ignoring me, White One?]
{So you were awake, Red One. Although I can't feel any hostility from you.}
[Yours has also decreased. Hmph. It seems we both have more important duties.]
"So you're this generation's Red Dragon Emperor. Grow stronger, my rival. We shall see each other again soon enough." And with that, he flew off with his catch.
Everyone else turned to Artorias and Izanami. "Ara Ara~ It seems I have some explaining to do. Ufufufu~" She giggled while holding a hand to her mouth like an Onee-San.
AUTHER'S SECTION
AND SCENE! This ended up being a pretty long chapter. I'm fairly confident in it. And we see the emergence of Izanami, one of the OC's I planned for this fic. I pulled a MegaTen and made her possess Artorias. I also made a lot of "Tales of" references in this chapter, but that's not too bad right? :D Anyhoo, next time, on High School DxD Genealogy:
