Amity

Warning: If you have ever suffered parental abuse, you may want to stay away, or at least read with precaution, as it may feature some triggers. (I didn't thougth of that until after making most of this).

A long time ago, in the Demon Realm, there was a place called the Boiling Isles. There lived a girl named Amity Blight. At first glance, she seemed to everything any person would want in life. She is a powerful witch, top of her class, coming from one of the richest family in the Boiling Isles; she had a life too good to be true.

But never judge a book by its cover. The truth is, she had the worst life possible. If her well-meaning-but-mischievous siblings weren't bad enough, her parents just had no equal, but not in a good way. She once came home with just an A instead of the usual A+, and her mother wasn't happy.

"An A, Amity? Just an A?", her mother said.

"It… was… not… that… bad", Amity said.

"It is for this family, dear. Now, do you want to be seen as weak?".

"No".

"Then you will go with your teacher and you'll do the test again. And this time, you will approve".

"But… Just for an A?".

"Amity! What did your father and I told you".

"Good kids don't squabble".

"That's right. Now, are you going to do that test again?".

Amity's mother watched her with fiery eyes, like a silent warning against saying No. Amity received that message, and was terrified of going against her mother, so she said: "Yes"

"And what grade you will get?"

"An A+".

"See, that's my good girl. Now go".

As Amity prepared to go back to school she turned to her mother and asked:

"You… are not going to wish me good luck?".

With a hidden annoyance and lack of emotion, her mother responded:

"Wishes don't give good grades, dear".

"Okay", said Amity.

On her way back to school, several thoughts came to Amity's mind.

"Oh, how could I be so stupid? How did I dared to do it? I should have given all I had. It was so simple".

In the midst of her thoughts, her mind flashed back to the test.

She went back to that moment, when she watched Willow on the class. Amity remembered how her parents forced her to break up with Willow, her best friend. Deep, deep down, she was angry with her parents for that. Then she thought, "That's it. This time, I'm not going to do things their way. I'm not going to do what they want me to do. I'm going to… I'm going to rebel, yes. I'm going top do that". Up to her turn to do the test, she kept thinking, "I got this. I'm going to rebel". When it was her turn, Amity tried to her best to do the worst, but at the last second she thought, "Wait, should I do this? I good idea?", so she only gave a half-decent performance for her standards. Enough for an A, but Amity had just one thing on her mind: "Please, don't be mad".

Upon recalling these events, Amity told to herself: "Don't be stupid this time. This time, you must be a good girl".

Later that day, Amity once again came home from school. This time, with an A+. When she told her parents, they responded with this:

"Wonderful dear, our family's reputation has been restored" said her mother.

"How interesting, daughter" said her father.

Both said that with a deep level of apathy, to the point of leaving Amity sad. It wasn't the first time, nor the second, nor even the 100th time. This time, she was sad to the point of tears.

"Are you crying, Amity?" said her mother.

"It's just that…" tried to say Amity.

"Who cares about why you cry?" her mother responded, interrupting her. "You can't show emotions. They make you seem weak".

Amity stopped crying. She apologized, and then said:

"Hey, I think I forgot something at the library…"

"You did what-?!" her parents said, with a highly stern and angry tone.

"Sorry, I meant to say that…" she then stopped for a moment, and said "I'll go to the library, I wanna study more".

"Amity, how many times we told you to not to scare us like that" her father responded.

"Remember Amity, Blights are meant to be the example of power and perfection. They can't see one of us making one mistake" continued her mother. "You understood, Amity".

"Yes", she responded.

"OK, then, what are you waiting for, dear. Go to the library and study" said her mother.

Amity then left, struggling to keep her tears inside her eyes.

She eventually came to the library, but skipped all books made for studies. What she said about studying was a lie.

Amity went to the romance section, pulled a book, and entered into her private room. She picked up a book titled "The Good Witch Azura", and she reads "The little witch Azura was hugged by both of her parents. Her mother said 'That's pur little bundle of joy', while her father kissed her on the checks and her siblings shouted 'We got one heck of a super sister'. They all are having the time of their lifes". As AMity read this, she touched gently the picture of Azura and her family, and finally loet go all the tears she was holding back.
