Part 2: Time to leave
The years went by as both Jak and Korra began their avatar training at the white lotus compound near the southern water tribe. They were told it was originally to keep Korra safe since the avatar Aang asked the white lotus to do so, but with discovery of Jak being able to bend all four elements he was being kept there as well to train alongside Korra. But a lot of the times he spent solo training on his own and reading books about different bending fighting styles.
His skill increased greatly so much there were separate times for he and Korra to be trained. Sure enough he mastered water, earth and fire before Korra did. But with the the only air bending master Tenzin in Republic city he could only rely on his books and solo training to teach him how to use his air bending. One day after years had past Jak and Korra had grown. Korra was in the training yard wearing her friending gear while sparring with three fire benders. Watching from the podium was Katara, the fire bending teacher and three elder white lotus members.
"Ahh," said Korra blasting fire at one of the fire benders making him fall down and another one blasted fire at her but she dispersed before sending him flying as well.
"She's strong," Katara said watching as Korra sent out another ball of fire at one of her opponents.
"She lacks restraint," the fire bending teacher said as they heard someone land on the roof after hearing wind blow by. Jak put his legs through the railing as he watched Korra practice. He wore a blue shirt with navy pants, he had let hiss hair grow out and now it stretched back into a tail at the back of his head. He had serious expression on his face as he watched his friend train.
Korra dodged another fire ball before blasting at one of the benders feet making him jump into the air. She slid to the ground kicking his chin which sent him flying over her as she blasted one of the other fire benders making him fall back.
The last fire bender jumped into the air spinning his leg and sending out a slash of fire. Korra moved her arms dispersing it and sent the man flying to the ground with blast of fire making him groan, "Woohoo," Korra said cheering, only to look at the spectators who looked accept for Katara who was smiling, had serious expressions on their faces.
"Hey whats with all the doom and gloom we should be celebrating, three elements down and only one to go," said Korra smiling as she took off her head gear.
"Not so fast Korra, we haven't decided yet if you have completed your fire bending training," the fire bending teacher said.
"If you ask me shes done very well," Jak said getting Korras attention and she saw him waving at her from the ceiling.
"How long have you been up there?" Korra asked as he stood up before jumping into the air and landing safely on the ground using air bending to slow his descent.
"Just in time for the ending," he said before looking at the spectators.
"Don't get ahead of yourself Jak, ever since two of you were young you've both excelled at the physical side of bending but not the spiritual side, the avatar must be the gap between both worlds," the senior white lotus member said while Korra looked bored since this wasnt the first time they were reminded of this.
"Yes we know that, that's why we need to be trained under master Tenzin right away," said Korra with Jak nodding in agreement.
"Hmm, what do you think about this master Katara," the senior white lotus member asked looking at the avatars water bending teacher.
"If there's anything that can teach them the things they need, it will be Tenzin," she answered smiling while the white lotus members sighed in defeat.
"Very well then, your air bending training with master Tenzin shall begin soon," he said.
"Yes finally," Korra said punching her fist into the air cheering.
"Uh Korra," Jak said nodding his head back at the people watching them.
"Oh right, thank you very much," she said bowing with Jak doing the same before the two of them began walking away.
"Is it okay to cheer now?" She asked smiling while Jak sighed before nodding his head as she cheered again before the two of them walked towards where Naga was kept, Korra being the one to open the gate.
"Hey Naga guess what, we're going to finally start our air bending training girl," she said as Naga rolled over from where the polar bear dog was lying down. Korra walked up petting her as Naga licked her face, "Hey maybe we should take her out today," she said looking at Jak as he petted Naga.
"You know how the they feel when we go outside," Jak responded looking serious.
"Oh come on, you finally come out of your room for more then a few hours and you say," she said before Jak interrupted her by grabbing Nagas saddle.
"Which is why they should let us as a gift for you completing your fire bending training," he said smiling which made her smile as well before she got on and he got on behind her before they rode out to the gate.
"Were just taking a Naga out for a walk," Korra said looking at the white lotus member who was in the watch tower.
"Don't worry were not going out far," said Jak who was holding onto the saddle.
The guard nodded his head before the gate opened and the two avatars smiled before they rode slowly out. But when they got far away Korra smiled back at Jak before urging Naga to go faster which made Jak grab her waist to be more secure.
"So how did your meditation go today?" Korra asked as they rode past one of the snow hills.
"Well it already confirmed what I told you last year, I cant seem to connect to the other past avatars so that means you're the true avatar," said Jak.
"Yeah an avatar who cant bend air," said Korra looking annoyed before Jak tapped her on the shoulder.
"Hey don't be down, I mean before we started learning you were already blast firing out of your hands and ruining your parents floor with earth bending," said Jak making her laugh.
"Yeah your right, so I guess this also means you didn't unlock the avatar state?" She asked as they stopped at the cliff side near the ocean.
"I probably don't even have one," Jak said as he jumped down from the saddle and stood near the cliff side, "Some of the stories Ive read mentioned benders with unique ability's, guess Im the first one to be like the avatar," he said looking at his hand as his mind flashed back to the night he realized it.
"Then why do you still meditate?" Korra asked sounding confused.
"To focus, you should try it sometime," said Jak smiling, "But then again Tenzin will probably be telling you the same thing when we start our air bending training,".
"If most of the time is spent sitting around I'm going to get really bored quick," she said looking bored already as Jak smiled a little before getting back on Naga as they rode off back to the compound.
The day Tenzin arrived came and he arrived with his three children. His daughters Jinora and Ikki, his son Meelo and his wife Pema who has currently pregnant with their fourth child. As his Sky Bison Oogi flew above the compound Jak could already hear Ikkis voice, "Are we there yet, are there yet?" She said repeatedly.
"Yes Ikki, as I said for the last few times, were finally here," Tenzin said looking tired with Meelo hanging onto his head while Oogi landed on the ground. Katara walking over to greet them while Korra and Jak stood back as they talked.
It was a while before they were noticed by Tenzin while Katara was commenting about Pemas baby was going to be another air bender, "Korra, Jak," he said as the two of them walked over to the air bending master.
"Master Tenzin its good to see you," said Jak bowing.
"You as well, the two of you have grown so much since the last time I saw you," said Tenzin before Ikki jumped in front of Jak jumping up and down.
"Hey Jak did you learn about any new bending tricks, why don't you have a glider yet," she said making Jak laugh. Since the last visit the little air benders hung more around and Jak then Korra.
"Probably because you can air bend to," Korra had told him by whispering to him during their last visit.
"Easy Ikki, you know I think I thought off on, on," he said as his nose scrunched up, "Achoo," he said blasting into the air sending snow everywhere.
"Whoa," said Meelo.
"Is he gonna be alright?" Jinora asked.
"Don't worry he will be down in a few seconds, he showed me the trick the day after he learned it," said Korra looking a little Jealous, "Anyway were both really looking forward to learning from you master Tenzin," she said looking excited but looked confused when Tenzin looked down.
"Well about that," he said.
"Your not staying are you?" Katara asked her son with a sad look on her face.
"No Im afraid not, Im to return to Republic city by tomorrow morning," said Tenzin as a few seconds later Jak landed behind Korra brushing the snow off of his coat.
"What's wrong?" He asked noticing the downed looks.
That evening in the compounds dining room where everyone would usually eat, Jak and Korra sat at one side of the table, with a senior white Lotus member sitting across from them and Tenzin sitting at the head of the table.
"So how long is it going to take, a week, a month?" Korra asked Tenzin urgently.
"I'm afraid it will be much longer then that, things have changed in Republic city that I'm needed there now more then ever," said Tenzin.
"BUt you were suppose to move down here, I'm suppose to learn all four elements, bring peace and I cant do that all the way from here," said Korra before she put her hands on the table, "Maybe it would just be better if me and Jak move to air temple island and you can teach us there,".
"Its not a bad idea," said Jak while eating from a bowl of rice.
"Absolutely not, avatar Aang told us to keep you here so you can be protected, we cant do that if you leave," the senior white lotus member said while looking serous.
"Well how can I be the avatar if I cant air bend," said Korra looking annoyed getting up from the ground and leaving the room.
"If only you knew enough to teach her yourself Jak," said Tenzin looking over at Jak who put his bowl on the table before standing up.
"I'm actually agreeing with her idea Tenzin, how is the avatar suppose to help the world if were kept here," he said before walking out of the room and shoving his hands into his pocket sharing Korras opinion on the whole situation.
The next morning Katara saw Tenzin and his family off as they left the compound. While near the cliff side Korra sitting next too Naga watched the sky Bison leave before she clenched her fist with a determined look on her face.
That night she snuck into Nagas pen, "Sorry girl but its time for us to go," she said grabbing the saddle before.
"Taking her out for a night walk," Jak said making her look surprised as she turned him around to see him standing next to Katara while carrying a large bag on his back.
"I'm sorry but I have to do this, I have to go to Republic city I just have this feeling that's where I need to go," said Korra.
"Its okay I understand ," Katara said making the young avatar look surprised, "Aangs time has past, my brother along with a lot of my friend are already gone, I believe its time for the new age to take over, the two of you must go to achieve your shared destiny," she said smiling.
"Wait the two of us," said Korra looking over at Jak.
"Korra the day I deiced to learn to use the other elements I was going to use it to make sure I never lose anyone ever again," said Jak stepping forward and placing his hand on her shoulder, "I cant really do that without learning how to fully control air bending,".
Korra smiled before hugging him and his face went a little red before hugging her back with a smile on his face, "The two of you have a long journey ahead of you, make sure to look out for each other,".
"Thank you Katara," said Korra before hugging their water bending teacher.
"Goodbye Korra," said Katara before being hugged by Jak as well, "Goodbye Jak," she said.
Since they couldn't go through the front gate the two of them made a tunnel with their bending and they serviced when they were far away from the compound. They got on Naga before before heading towards the village to say their other goodbyes.
"I'm gonna miss you guys so much," Korra said as she hugged her mom and dad.
"Be safe out there," said Tonraq looking over at Korra and then Jak who was standing next to Naga while he petted her head.
"We love you so much," said Senna as Korra backed away before looking over at Jak. Noticing the sad look on her face he walked over hugging his mothers friend, "Please look after each other," she said.
"We will," said Jak before holding out his hand to Tonraq who pulled him towards him instead. Jak hugged him back while smiling.
"Your parents would be very proud of you," he whispered only wanting Jak to hear him.
"Thank you for everything," he said trying to keep his voice low as he said goodbye to two of the people who looked after him after his parents died.
Korra helped him get on Nagas back before they rode to another part of the village where Jaks house used to be, but instead there was now a small grave. Jak placed fresh flowers in front of the stone before getting back on Naga. The two of them made their way to the harbor where they snuck into the cargo hold for a ship that was heading for Republic city, they also noticed that there was a sato mobile in the middle of the room.
"Your gonna be tired when we get there tomorrow," Jak said as the two of them were resting against Naga behind a pile of crates.
"I'm just excited, were finally getting to see what Republic city looks like," she said smiling at him.
"Well don't forget were also going there to learn air bending, it's important to stay focused," he said closing his eyes as he planned to fall asleep.
"Yeah okay, now whos the one acting down," Korra said closing her eyes while Jak sighed.
"This should be a fun trip," he thought. After going to the compound and starting their training the time they spent together became rare since Jak put most of his focus into training. Though they considered each other friends when there were times they would train together, eat together or take Naga out for a walk.
"Its better this way," he thought feeling a small pain in his chest. He fell asleep because the next morning they will be arriving at Republic city.
