Part 3: Welcome to Republic city
Jak woke up as the ship shook around him, "Hey Naga wake up were here," Korra said making the polar dog wake up from her sleep as Jak rubbed his eyes as the ship shook again as they heard the hatch opening. The two avatars looked over the crates they were hiding behind to see light shining into the room.
A few moments after men started carrying out the cargo Jak and Korra rode out on Naga with Korra riding up front, "Thanks for the ride," she said as they rode onto the harbor surprising some of the people around them as they rode up the road. Jak could see tall buildings across the lake and airships flying over head, "Ive never seen so many sato mobiles in one place," Korra said pointing at the bridge where a lot of the mobiles were slowly making their way across.
They then reached the edge of the harbor where they could see the Island where avatar Aang's statue was located. Jak got off Naga before walking over to the railing, "Everything alright?" Korra asked.
"Yeah, just remembering something," Jak said as he remembered a conversation that took place a few days after he and Korra were brought to the white lotus compound.
Flashback:
A younger Jak whos hairs had grown to reach his ears stood in front of Katara and the senior white lotus members, "So me being able to use the other elements is because Avatar Aang wished for it?" He asked looking at his hands.
"Not exactly, Avatar Aang wished that the current avatar Korra wouldn't have to face the responsibilities of being the avatar alone," the senior white lotus member said with a serious look on his face.
"You however are different, Korra maybe able to bend Fire and Earth along with water but given what happened to your parents the ability bend all four awakened inside you," the second white lotus said looking annoyed.
"That's enough," said Katara making the white lotus member looked nervous from the glare she gave him. She then walked over to Jak who looked nervous, "Do you still wish to follow the goal you told me about?" She asked with a smile.
"Yes Master Katara, I want to learn so I can protect Korra and everyone else," he said looking determined.
"That's good, I know you went let Aang's wish go to waste," she said.
Flashback end
"Thank you Aang, I wont let you down," Jak thought staring at the statue when Korra brought him out of his thoughts.
"Well we wont get to air temple island by sticking around here all day," said Korra, "What do you say girl you ready for a little swim," she said looking at Naga who began sniffing the air before before running down the road.
"Wait Naga," said Jak before sighing as they got further away, "Probably should have given her food on the ship, well good thing I learned how to do this," he said jumping into the air as he spun air around underneath him, forming an air scooter. He jumped on chasing after Korra and Naga while people were surprised by his air bending.
He passed Sato mobiles that had almost crashed into each other as he accelerated faster down the road before finding Naga peaking into a food stand. He jumped, dispersing the air scooter as Korra talked to the shop owner, "Will have one of everything," said Korra smiling.
"That will be twenty yuan," she said making Korra look nervous.
"Well actually," Korra began to say before Jak walked over taking a bag of coins out of his bag he had brought with him.
"We don't need that much, will just take two of these," said Jak picking up two sticks.
"Four yuan," the store owner said before Jak passed her the money making Korra look confused while he took some food out of his bag before passing it to Naga who ate it in one bite.
"Here lets go find a place to sit," Jak said passing her the other meat stick while he ate his own.
"Yeah sure," said Korra as they walked down the street before heading to the park and sitting near the lake as Naga moved around in the the water, probaly looking for something more to eat.
"I'm glad some one of us came prepared," Korra said looking annoyed while eating.
"Its like I said, focus," said Jak smiling as he ate.
"So how does a water tribe boy have Republic city money?" Korra asked him making him stop eating as he looked down.
"It was one of the things my parents left behind," he said before taking a bite while she looked down.
"Oh I forgot, you said your parents met in Republic city," Korra said before they heard some rustling in the bushes nearby and turned to see a man with a beard and long hair jump out of one.
"Hey there, you wouldn't happen to have any food left would you?" He asked as Jak finished off his food.
"No sorry, oh wait here we go," said Jak looking into water to see a fish. He formed a water bubble around it before dropping into his hand and cooking it with fire bending, "Here you go," he said passing the man the fish.
"Well thanks, that's very kind, though its not every day I see someone from the water tribe fire bend," the man said taking a bite.
"It's a long story, so what were you doing in that bush, do you live there?" Korra asked and the two of them look confused when the man laughed.
"Yep sure do, took me a while to find one this comfy," he said patting the bush.
"Strange, I thought everyone would be living it up in Republic city," Korra said looking at the river as Naga picked up fish.
"Little lady your most definitely new here, not everything you hear about it is true," the homeless man said before a whistle went off behind them.
"Hey you cant fish here," a security officer said.
"Looks like its time to go, come on Naga," said Jak getting the polar dogs attention and she ran out of the river with him getting on first and then Korra as they ran off not knowing the man was waving at them while in the bush. As they were leaving the park they saw a gathering near the entrance. There was a man holding a megaphone standing on a wooden stage, behind him a poster of a man wearing a mask that red cirle on his forhead.
"Are you tired of benders treating us non benders like were beneath them, then join Amons equalists and we shall put an end to the benders reign of terror," he said while some people cheered in excitement.
"Reign of terror how can you say that, bending is one of the best things ever," said Korra getting everyone's attention.
"Oh that's easy for you to say, I bet the two of you are benders," he said still speaking into the megaphone.
"Yeah is there something wrong with that," Korra said looking annoyed.
"I thought the city's police force were metal benders, are you really going to speak against the people who try and protect you," Jak said calmly while some of the people seemed to understand his words.
"Don't listen to him, the Republic city police department is only focused on protecting their own kind," the man said, "Those two are probably thinking of using their bending powers to blow me off this stage," he said.
"Seriously thinking about it," said Korra holding up her right fist making the man look frightened.
"See what did I tell you, these benders are against us non benders," he said. Jak sighed ignoring the people booing them as Naga moved further down the road.
"I'm surprised you didn't send that guy flying," said Korra.
"That's probably what he wanted, if we attacked a non bender that would make the people think even worse about us," said Jak looking serious, "A group calling themselves the equalists, just what is happening in this city," he thought before realizing he didn't know where to go.
As they walked down another street, they began walking next to Naga, "I'm sorry this is our first time here, do you know how we can get to air temple island?" Korra asked a woman who was sitting outside a tea shop.
"Just down this road and if you take a left," the woman began to say before there was the sound of screeching tires further down the road. A long sato mobile drove up the road stopping in front of a shop across the road.
"You two should leave, its not going to be safe here soon," the woman said going to hide while three men walked out of the sat mobile with grins on their faces as they approached the owner of the shop.
"I hope you have the money ready, otherwise the triple triad wont be able to protect this lovely store of yours for much longer," the man wearing a grey hat said.
"I'm sorry I don't have not enough, why don't you take one of my homaphones," he said only up a device that could play music, but one of the men smashed it to the ground with his foot and fire bending.
"Sorry my friends here not much of a music lover," said the man in charge, "Now either you hand us over the money or,".
"Enough," said Jak getting their attention as the gang members turned around to face him and Korra.
"Oh seems you two don't know who your up against, mess with us and all you'll end up is a quick trip to the hospital," said the leader.
"Sorry but that's not going to happen," Korra said cracking her knuckles as Jak stretched his neck out.
"Just who do you think you two are," said one of the other men.
"Why don't you find out," said Korra smiling before the man in charge sent water from inside his jacket at her. Korra sent it back into his face freezing it as Jak sent earth shooting up from the ground sending him flying. The second man made a run for Korra but she sent him flying into the air by pushing the earth up and Jak blasted him with fire sending him crashing into a wall.
"That girl she just water bended and earth bended," the woman from earlier said standing behind cover next to a man.
"That boy used earth and fire," he said before the last standing member sent a large blast of fire at Korra. But she easily separated the flames and grabbed the front of his jacket, throwing him towards one of the store window. He would have broken through if Jak hadn't sent him flying down the street with a blast of air.
"That takes care of that," said Korra smiling before the leader jumped into the sato mobile, driving forward and picking up the other two injured.
"Oh no you don't," said Jak taking a stance as he pushed the earth up from under the mobile. Creating two pillars under the right side of the vehicle flipping it on its left side before completely turning over.
"Nice thinking," said Korra as they ran up to the car as the criminals crawled out. There was then a ringing sound coming from above them, it was an airship. Men jumped down from above wearing security uniforms and shooting out metal wires to help slow their descent.
"Those the metal benders you mentioned earlier," said Korra.
"Yeah, I think they use the wires to get around the city quicker," Jak said as they landed.
"We caught bad guys for you officer, no need to thank us," said Korra smiling as he gestured at the groaning triad members who were struggling to get up before being tied up by metal cables.
"Will be taking them in, along with you two," the lead officer said surprising the two of them.
"Wait why are you taking us in, their the bad guys," said Korra.
"Yeah, well it seems the two of you cause quite the bit of damage yourself," the officer said gesturing at the ruined road.
"Yeah but we weren't going to let them get away, it was better then doing nothing," said Jak noticing some of the other officers getting closer.
"Yeah, listen you can tell all you want down at headquarters," said the officer shooting a cable before Korra grabbed it.
"I didn't do anything," she said looking annoyed.
"I don't think they're going to listen, ahh," Jak said swiping his right leg forward with a blast of air, sending the officers flying or pushed back.
"Cmon Naga," said Korra as the polar dog ran up to them, Korra got on first before Jak followed as they ran off with the officers chasing after them.
"Their catching up," said Korra and Jak saw the men using their cables to swing through the space between buildings.
"Just keep going forward," said Jak turning around as he punched his fists forward sending out blasts of fire, making a few officers fall and then he smiled when he noticed they crossed a bridge that had river under it. He moved his hands up moving the water and then creating an ice wall making the remaining officers crash into it.
"Bye," Jak said waving at them as he felt Naga jump and he looked forward to see she had jumped onto a building before jumping onto a moving train.
"Look there it is," said Korra pointing at air temple island in the distance.
"I hope you're ready for that swim Naga," Jak said as the polar dog barked in response. Jak then looked annoyed as he noticed more officer sliding on wires above the buildings, "Looks like their back," he said.
"Hang on," said Korra urging Naga to jump. When the Polar dog jumped into the air she was grabbed by cables.
"What," said Jak before cables tied around him and Korra.
"Don't move," a voice said from above them and they looked to see the cables that had grabbed them were coming form an airship. The two of them looked annoyed beofre accepting thier defeat.
Later on they were brought to police headquarters, Naga was taken to a separate part of the building. While Jak and Korra were brought to an interrogation room where they handcuffed to the table when a woman with dark grey hair and two scars on her right cheek walked into the room carrying a clip board.
"Destruction of property, evading escape and assaulting multiple officers, you two are in so much trouble," she said slamming her hand on the the table next to Korra.
"Look theres all just a big misunderstanding, its kind of our Job to help people you see were both avatars," said Korra gesturing at herself then at Jak who waved.
"I don't care if your both the," she said before looking confused as she realized what they said, "Wait did you say your both avatars?" She asked.
"Shes the avatar, I'm just a water bender with the unique ability to bend the other three" said Jak breathing out fire.
"Well no matter who you are you just cant deal out vigilante justice whenever you want, Republic city already had one of those and he vanished years ago," she said.
"Listen we can clear everything up, if we can just talk to the person in charge," Korra said before the woman sat in the chair across from them with a serious look on her face.
"Well your looking at her, I'm chief Beifong," she said.
"Wait Beifong, Lin Beifong your Tophs daughter," said Korra smiling.
"What about it," said Lin not looking impressed.
"Well why are you keeping us here, your mom and avatar Aang were friends, she helped him save the world," said Korra.
"That's ancient history and it doesn't matter with what happened today," said Lin before one of the shutters in the room opened, "What," she said looking annoyed from being interrupted.
"Chief, councilmen Tenzin is here," he said.
"Alright, let him in," Lin said before sighing as the doors behind her opened revealing Tenzin with a serious look on his face.
"Hi Tenzin," said Jak.
"We kind of got lost on our way to see you," said Korra laughing nervously.
Tenzin sighed, "Lin how good to see you, your looking lovely as always," he said.
"Cut it Tenzin what are the avatars doing in this city, I thought you were suppose to move down to the South Pole to train them, well one of them at least," she said remembering one of the officers reporting that they had been sent flying by a blast of air.
"My re location was delayed, but not to worry the two of them will be returning to the South Pole tonight," said Tenzin making Korra look down.
"Fine," Lin moving her right hand as the Jak and Korra were released, "Get them out of here, I don't want them causing any more trouble in this city,".
"Thank you Lin," Tenzin said walking out of the room with Korra and Jak following him. Lin gave Korra the hand gesture that meant, "I got my eyes on you,". Korra did the same back at her but Jak just waved back as they were brought to the room where the animals were kept.
"I cant believe you disobeyed me after everything I said, Jak you should have known better," said Tenzin.
"Well Tenzin for once Im glad I didn't listen, it's a good thing we came," Jak said calmly.
"Hes right Tenzin, Katara told us that our shared destiny is here in Republic city," said Korra.
"Don't bring my mother into this," Tenzin said looking annoyed.
"Today was only our first day here and things aren't what I thought they were going to be like, this city's in trouble and it needs us," said Korra looking at Tenzin hoping he would listen to her, "How are we suppose to help these people if you keep us locked away without even knowing what's going on,".
"I'm sorry but my word is final," Tenzin said. There was a few moments of silence before Jak heard the sound of a familiar bark. He looked to see Naga next to an officer who had his hair messed up.
"Is this your polar dog sir and ms," he said before Naga licked him.
It was night by the time they were heading to air temple island on a boat. Tenzin looked up at the statue of his father before looking at the back of the boat where Korra and Jak were staring at the city with Naga sititng between them. When they reached the island a white lotus ship was there waiting, there were two white lotus guards standing near the walkway.
Jak and Korra were about to walk forward when Jinora and Ikki flew down on gliders, Ikki was carrying Milo, "Korra, Jak," the young air benders said happily as they hugged them.
"Are you two coming to live on the island?" Ikki asked.
"No sorry Ikki, we gotta go back," said Korra.
"Don't worry, will be back soon enough," said Jak with a small smile before he and Korra began walking towards the ship with Naga walking slowly next to them.
"Wait," said Tenzin making them stop as they turned around facing him, "Ever since my father passed away Ive been trying to uphold his legacy to make this city what he wished it to be, sadly I wasn't able to" he said before placing a hand on both Jak and Korra's shoulders, "But now I realize its not my legacy to uphold, his legacy belongs to the two of you,"
"Wait you mean?" Korra asked smiling.
"You may stay here and I will teach both of you air bending," Tenzin said smiling.
"Thanks you're the best," said Korra hugging him before Ikki, Milo and Jinora did the same. Naga then nudged Jacks back and he shook his head before hugging them as well. Naga nudged her head against Korras back in a way of joining the group hug as they laughed in joy.
The next day outside city hall a stage was set up, Lin along with Tenzin and the rest of the council stood behind Korra and Jak as they reached the podium where there was a large crowd gathered in front of them.
"My name is Korra and this is Jak and were your new avatars," Korra said as some of the people in the crowd sounded surprised that there was two avatars.
"Are the two of you moving to Republic city, will you be fighting against the equalists or organized crime or both, will you be working along side Chief Beifong and the police force?" the reporters in the crowd asked.
"Uh yes to that first part, as for the rest I'm not sure because the two us are still in training," said Korra looking over at Jak for him to join in.
"But rest assured we will be doing our best to help the people of this city, when I learned about this city avatar Aang wished for it to be a centre of peace, were here to make sure that wish becomes a reality," Jak said looking determined as some of the people in the crowd cheered.
"Thank you all for welcoming us to city," said Korra before more reporters started asking questions.
"That will be enough questions for now," Tenzin said as he gestured for the two of them to walk off the stage. While Korra and Jak were being brought off the stage they were unaware of one of the people that had been listening to them from a radio.
In an underground room a man wearing some kind of suit and green goggles was looking at the radio with a nervous look on his face, "This is bad Amon, we thought we would have trouble with one of them and now theres two of them," he said looking over at the man in the mask that Jak had seen on the poster at the park yesterday.
"Its no trouble, it just means will have to accelerate our plans," he said calmly. Not caring that he now has two avatars to go up against.
