Part 9: Gliding and feelings
As snow began to fall on air temple island Jak stood in one of the courtyards with his blue coat on as he walked around with both his hands up and his eyes shut. He then opened his eyes before blasting out air and fire from his fists as he moved in a circle. When he reached close to the cliff he moved his fingers around as cracks lightning came from the ends of them and he then shot a strike into the sky.
"Impressive," said Tenzin getting his attention. Jak looked over to see his air bending teacher walking over with two staffs.
"Sorry if it's disturbing you, I never got much chance to practice this back at the South Pole," Jak said looking at his right hand where the strike had shot out of.
"I hope you understand why that is," Tenzin said standing in front of him, "Lighting is extremely dangerous and cause great injury's," he said before smiling, "Though I am impressed you were able to learn it,".
"Thanks," Jak said before pointing at the staffs, "Whats with the staffs, I'm sure Korra isn't ready to learn how to fly just yet," he said.
"That's because one of them is for you," Tenzin said handing him the right staff. Jak looked surprised before holding the staff in his hand and unfolding the blue wings inside.
"This is for me," he said remembering the drawings of Aang's staff that was made for him.
"Yes, you air bending has come quiet a way since you and Korra first came here, speaking of which where is she today?" Tenzin asked looking around.
"She went to go practice pro bending with Mako and Bolin," Jak said before looking over at the stadium. Ever since the night at avatar Aang memorial island the two of them had decided to leave Tarlok's task force, despite his annoyance from their decision. So Korra went back to pro bending practice while Jak stayed on air temple island to continue his own practice.
"I see and your okay with that," said Tenzin.
"Sure, why?" Jak asked looking confused.
"Nothing, shall we get started," said Tenzin before unfolding his own glider and shooting off into the air. Jak smiled before tossing his glider forward and jumping on as he flew above the island after grabbing onto the handles.
"Well done," said Tenzin said flying next to him, "Make sure to keep your balance and don't let go," he said.
"Got it," Jak said before turning as he flew over the water before he smiled and got an idea. He flew above the path before folding the wings in, he then formed an air scooter below him shooting forward for a few moments and then took off back into the air. But he shook a little after taking off.
"Not bad for your first try," said Tenzin.
"I was a little worried how I was going to land," Jak said smiling nervously as the wind blew in his face as he looked at the city. After a few more minutes of flying they landed back at the courtyard.
"Not bad your first flying lesson, hopefully Korra will do as well as you when she begins," said Tenzin smiling before noticing the downed look on Jak's face, "Jak, you may not have the avatar state but you can still bend all four elements,".
"Korras the one that should be using this staff," said Jak holding it towards his air bending teacher who shook his head before pushing it back to him.
"It wouldn't be right, after all it was my father who wanted someone like you to help the avatar," said Tenzin before he began walking away, "I also have one made for her already," he said smiling before Jak shook his head before noticing the sun was about to set.
"I guess I could get some practice of my own," he said before unfolding his glider and taking off into the air. The first day of the tournament arrived and Jak arrived later after Korra on his glider.
He opened the door to the locker room seeing them wearing their new pro bending gear with the future industries logo on them, "Sorry if I'm late," Jak said.
"Of course your not and whoa," Bolin said turning around only to notice Jaks staff, "Is that a glider?" He asked looking excited.
"Yeah I just got it yesterday, but sure enough Korra will have her own someday," he said smiling at her.
"Yeah but when I saw you flying around yesterday it was annoying when I cant even blast air," she said putting on her head gear.
"We better get going, thanks for showing up Jak," Mako said.
"Yeah good luck out there," he said shaking his hand before leaning against the railing while Korra, Mako and Bolin got onto the platform that took them to the arena. The match ended up not going on for long as Mako, Bolin and Korra worked well together as they defended each other and ended up winning the match.
"Hey you guys did great out there," said Jak as the three of them got off the platform.
"Yeah the practice is really paying off," said Bolin stretching his arms as Korra and Mako walked past them. Bolin went to his locker and Jak could over hear Korra and Mako talking.
"We did really great out there together," said Korra.
"Yeah we do play well together," said Mako smiling.
"Yeah we do work together well outside the arena too, when it comes to saving family members or taking out chi blockers," Korra said smiling nervously which made Jak look confused wondering what was happening, "Maybe we should hang outside more together,".
"Korra, you know I'm," said Mako before Korra interrupted him.
"Listen I really like you and I think we should be together," said Korra standing in front of him. Jak looked shocked as he felt a great pain in his chest, he quickly turned around gripping the railing.
"Jak, you doing okay," Bolin said before one of the avatars walked out of the room gripping his staff as Asami opened the door.
"Sorry," Jak said before heading towards the exit. As soon as he was outside he unfolded his glider and took off back towards air temple island. It was still night outside as he sat in the courtyard with his staff resting on the steps next to him.
"I know you grew up in a place where it always snows, but that doesn't mean you wont get cold," Pema said walking outside finding him looking down, "Something happened didn't it," she said looking worried.
"Turns out Korra likes Mako I don't see how that's really going to work since he's with Asami," Jak said still looking down.
"Well I'm sure if she feels down you'll be there to help her," Pema said walking forward and that's when she noticed the tears falling onto the ground from Jaks face.
"I thought back a long time ago that since were this way were meant to be together, but I wanted her to have her own choice and I would always make sure she would be safe," he said before looking up at Pema with tears coming out of his eyes, "If I wanted that then why does it hurt so much," he said before crying as he put his hands over his eyes.
Pema sat down next to him before hugging him, "Because you know that deep in your heart you really love her," she said as Jak sat silently as while his tears continued to fall, "I know it hurts now, but maybe you'll feel better if you tell her how you feel,".
"Thanks Pema," Jak said wiping his eyes as she walked back inside. He sat on the steps a little longer as he looked at the city thinking about what Pema told him. He let out a breath before picking up his staff and heading to his room. "I cant do it, not now," he thought before lying down on his bed, thinking he should spend the next few days training instead of going to the arena.
