Rick shouldn't have turned himself in. Or gone to that dreadful wedding. But he did anyway, if only to save his daughter's family from the horrors of the Galactic Federation. That didn't stop the Federation from acquiring the planet Earth upon the family's return, though.

A few weeks later (or months, depending on whether you followed your old calendar, or the Federation's calendar), another Rick collapsed the Federation from the inside, allowing our Rick to return home. The alien tourists took off, taking their apartment buildings with them (literally). The Sanchez-Smith family was back to normal, with a few exceptions: One, Rick made son-in-law Jerry make Beth choose between the two–resulting in a divorce.

Two, Beth was out of a job. During the Federation's control of Earth, the horse hospital where she worked was provided with new, alien medicine to use on the horses–medicine that made the horses healthy forever, rendering horse heart surgeons like Beth redundant. Now she knew how Jerry felt.

Beth considered taking this time to try and be a better mother (No, do or do not: there is no 'try'), because if the giant-inside-out-Summer episode proved anything, she had some homework to do. But even good parenting won't pay the bills. She needed a real job. Regular heart surgery (or "real" heart surgery as Jerry called it) would be an option, if there was a hospital close to home.

Rick entered and plopped down on the couch to watch TV. Beth approached him. If she couldn't find a new place to work, she thought, maybe her father could help in some way. Why else does the phrase go "father knows best"? She sat down next to him.

"Morty told me what happened while I was doing time," said Rick, "I'm sorry you lost your job."

"You did the right thing, Dad," Beth smiled, "If it weren't for you, I'd probably still be on the pill diet."

"Be happy they let you eat at all. The bugs confiscated my flask before they locked me up."

"Aw, Dad," Beth said, resting her head on Rick's shoulder.

"Uh…Sorry I left. Is there any I can make it up to you?"

Beth looked up, her eyes big, "Tell me about that citadel of yours. Does it need some extra hands?"

The Rick-spitol was the best hospital on the Citadel; actually, it was the only hospital on the Citadel. They had medical records for almost every Rick and Morty in the multi-verse. And best of all, they had Beths working there: Beths that were out-of-work in their home dimensions; Beths who were allowed to have their dreams of performing heart surgery on humans fulfilled; Beths who didn't have any Jerrys to belittle them. Jerrys are not allowed on the Citadel.

Rick was happy the Help Wanted sign on the front door was still hanging, considering that a lot of Ricks needed attending to in the aftermath of the uh…the thing that the other Rick did. But this Rick was always welcome to the Rick-spitol–he owns a share of their stock.

Rick led Beth past the numerous wheelchair-bound Ricks and the doctor Beths in the lobby to a secretary Beth at the front desk.

"Morning, Sweetie D605," said Rick,

"Morning, Dad K378," said Secretary Beth, "New applicant?"

Beth, a little weirded out by Secretary Beth calling her father 'Dad' as well, handed her a print-out of her resumé. Secretary Beth put on a pair of glasses and perused it while Beth took an application form to fill out.

"Hmm okay," said Secretary Beth, "It says you've worked a lot with horses and deer…"

Beth handed the filled-out form back to Secretary Beth, who skimmed through it to check for anything missed. She nodded, then handed the form back to Beth.

"Everything seemed to be in order," she said, "We'll have a card ready for you in 2 to 3 business days, but please keep that form with you for the time being."

"Thanks, honey," said Rick.

The Ricks and Beths of the Rick-spital started Beth off with something easy and comfortable for her so she could get the hang of things. First came heart surgery on a horse version of Rick in room 237, then later a Centaur Rick in room 412. Eventually, she finally got around to performing exceptional heart surgery on a humanoid Rick.

Every night, Beth came home to her family (sans Jerry of course), with delicious food on the table, and enough money that, after a month or so, was enough to pay off two mortgages.

And she owed it all to the help of her father.
