Just Hold Me

Chapter Eighteen

Luke was sitting on the cell floor bored out of his mind and worried about what was going to happen next when the heavy metal door opened and an officer stepped in.

"Mr Danes you are free to go, we are so sorry it seems it was a case of mistaken identity, we have had some new evidence come to light which proves your innocence," the man said. Luke stood, not wanting to be there a second longer than he had too.

"But Mr Danes we do have some news, Christopher Hayden was arrested after trying to attack his wife again, and your daughter got caught up on it, she hit her head and is in hospital along with Mrs Hayden, she should be fine but obviously as her father, you have the right to know," the man said. Luke's eyes went wide.

"WHAT!" he said his heart beating so fast it felt like it was about to beat right out his chest.

"It seems Mrs Hayden returned home to find some missing evidence, which she did find which saved you, sadly her body was too weak to handle such strain so she is back in hospital, she's alive but very poorly," the officer said. Luke blinked back tears and rushed out so fast he only managed to grab his shoes and left everything else behind, not even caring about them.

"Mr Danes we have some more bad news, we seem to have misplaced your hat, I am sorry it can't be found," the officer said handing him a bag with all his things, id, keys, etc. Luke for the first time since he heard the news of the injured girls he loved half-smiled.

"That's honestly the best news I have heard all year," he told them as he left, knowing everyone hated that awful black hat and no-one would miss it.

He rushed to the hospital, hatless, not stopping off to retrieve the blue one as it would waste to much time. When he got there April was sitting up, head bandaged reading a book and Lorelai was half awake but slowly drifting in and out of consciences.

"LUKE," Rory said hugging him tightly "They released you," she said as she saw him. April made to jump up but he rushed to her.

"Don't move, how are you?" he asked her

"My head kills but I will be alright, no long term damage," she said wrapping her arms tightly around him as he kissed her cheek knowing her head was sensitive.

"How's Lorelai?" he asked rushing to the other bed

"She's weak, she luckily didn't get any more injured but her body is completely burned out, it's going to take a while for her to regain her strength" Richard replied. Luke squeezed her hand as now she was not awake.

"Luke your hat what happened to it?" Rory asked him

"The police lost it" he replied

"Thank goodness for that!" Rory replied as she heard a very weak Luke coming from the bed next to her. Luke saw Lorelai and bent down to kiss her cheek.

"I'm back," he told her beaming as she looked at him, a sparkle in her eyes he hadn't seen in a long time.

April was released a few days later and Lorelai a week later, she was told she had to be very careful not to overdo it but she could go home and take it easy, not that anyone would let her overdo it.

"I bought burgers, brownies and them custard doughnut things you like," he said as he walked in the house. She was sitting on the sofa watching telly.

"Would you like to eat it with me?" Lorelai asked him "I got news from that lawyer, because of the situation I can get the marriage annulled without having to go to court, it will only take a matter of days to go through officially, but it's already done, basically I am free now," she told him. He sat down and smiled at her happy they were so close again. He had missed her.

She saw his eyes shine with happiness and gently moved her head to peck him very gently on the lips, knowing after everything he wouldn't make the first move as he would be scared to push her.

"You're the one you know," she told him. He smiled back and grabbed her hand as they settled down to watch the film.

"I love you and I am sorry for everything," he told her with a sigh.

"I am sorry too, I never stopped loving you, I tried but I didn't stop" Lorelai admitted "I was just so angry," she said touching the blue hat she loved so much.

"Me too, your mum is right we are both idiots" he replied and Lorelai laughed knowing he was right, she would take a long time to heal but she knew she would be okay with Luke and for the first time in a long time she was happy.
