Chapter Three: Patrol with the King

It was a few weeks later as the sun began to rise on a new day over Fang Rock. And while most were still asleep inside the rock formation, there was one who was awake. A young sharptooth cub came running up the rock ledge and stopped at the end. Chomper was exited for this day, for it was the day that his father promised that he would take the young prince with him on patrol through the valley, both on the inside and out. Chomper had a smile as he looked around the kingdom. He quickly turned and ran back down the ledge before running back into the cave where the pack slept. As he ran through the tunnel, Chomper called out, "Dad! Dad!"

He stopped at the edge of the edge of the sleeping pack and kept his voice low while shouting, "Come on, Dad! We got to go! Wake up!"

Both his mother and father were sleeping on an elevated ledge at the back of the cave. The rest of the pack slept all over the place, whether alone or in a small pile. He ran around one larger sharptooth's head but accidentally knocked into another's side, resulting in them groaning, "Uhh!"

"Sorry." Chomper offered as he kept moving past the sleeping dinosaurs. As he neared the ledge, he accidentally stepped on another sharptooth's tail. They let out a pained yelp and Chomper was quick to say, "Oops. So sorry."

Reaching the ledge, he ran up and nudged his snoring father while quietly saying, "Dad!" He became slightly annoyed as his father didn't wake up, "Dad!"

"Your son is awake." A sleepy Eda said while not opening her eyes. Both of them were becoming annoyed by the endless dads. Rex then told his mate, "Before sunrise,he's YOUR son."

"Dad!" Chomper said again, really wanting to go. Then he nicely asked, "Please, get up."

But when Rex didn't get up, Chomper decided to take a different approach. He ran down to Rex's back foot and lightly grabbed one of the toes with his teeth. Chomper growled as he tugged and gave it two tugs. When he tried for a third, he lost his grip and tumbled backwards with a, "Whoa!"

He landed amongst a pile of bones before standing up again. The little sharptooth cub shook the cobwebs off as he got a determined look on his face. Chomper didn't want to use this tactic, but he knew that it usually got his father up. Scrapping his foot against the stone floor, the purple sharptooth ran at his father's head. Chomper rammed against it, and though it didn't hurt either of them, it was enough to get Rex to open his eye. The Sharptooth King looked down to his son as he gave his father a small smile. Rex then gave in and said, "Okay, okay. I'm up, little one."

"Heh, sorry for the rude awakening." Chomper apologized. Rex gave a slight smile and said, "It's fine. I needed to get up anyway." Then with a slight motion of his head he said, "Go on."

"Okay." Chomper said as he ran ahead. Rex let loose a loud yawn that made even Eda open her eyes. Both King and Queen rose to their feet as the rest of the pack began to stir as well.

Rex and Eda soon joined Chomper outside of the den where the cub waited on a rock. Jumping off the rock, he walked behind his father and rubbed up against his mother's legs. She lightly nuzzled his head before nudging him after his father. As Chomper caught up with Rex, Eda watched them walk down a path with a smile.

Father and son walked all the way to the top of Fang Rock and sat side by side just as the sun came over the horizon. It's rays touched the top of the rock formation before spreading. As they viewed the lands around the rock formation, Rex said to his son, "Look Chomper. Everything the light touches is a part of our kingdom."

"Whoa." Was all Chomper could say as he looked about. Rex then continued by saying, "A king's time as ruler rises and falls like the sun." Father and son look to each other as Rex told the young sharptooth, "One day, Chomper, the sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king."

"And this'll all be mine to watch?" Chomper asks as he stands up. Rex chuckled before saying, "Everything."

Chomper walked along the edge as he repeated in a whisper, "Everything the light touches." He saw something in the distance, a little ways past the mountains. Chomper sat down and looked back while asking, "What about that shadowy place?"

Rex walked over and saw what he saw and said, "That is beyond our borders. It is very dangerous." He looked down to Chomper and warned, "You must never go there, Chomper."

"But I thought a king could do whatever he wanted." Chomper said looking up to his father. Rex smiled at this and said, "Oh, there's much more to being king than getting your way all the time."

Chomper stood up as his father turned away and asked in wonder, "There's more?"

Rex laughs at this and said, "Chomper…"

As they were walking down the slope, neither Rex or Chomper noticed that someone was watching them from afar. The figure quietly slipped away from Fang Rock.

Scar-Eye once again walked into the secluded place within the Mysterious Beyond. When he reached a bone pile, he found that Clawdette was already waiting for him. She was laying on a bone pile and turned her head towards him. The Fast Biter then asked, "What news have you brought us today?"

"My brother and his hatchling are taking a walk through the valley and on the other side of the mountains." Scar-Eye informed her. Clawdette shrugged and said, "The king goes on patrol practically every day. This is just news to me."

"Yes, but I need you to send some of your kin to cause a little trouble." Scar-Eye told her. She gave him a confused look and he explained, "No doubt that my brother will send his son home, where I will be waiting to send him here. And then you can do away with him. Bringing us one step closer to power."

Clawdette thought about it before bowing her head and she said, "It shall be done, Scar-Eye."

"Excellent." The black sharptooth said before taking his leave. He glanced back and said, "I ask that you try to not screw it up."

Clawdette scowled at him as Scar-Eye then continued to walk away. Getting up from her spot, the Fast Biter ran to relay the orders.

Rex and Chomper had been walking around the valley and were now on the borders outside of the mountain range. They were walking on the plains not too far from the mountains as a herd of Big Mouth Swimmers went by. Rex then told his son, "Everything you see exists together in a delicate balance. As king, you need to understand that balance and respect all the creatures," They came to the top of a hill as he said, "from the crawling critters to the towering Longnecks."

"But, Dad, don't we eat the Longnecks?" Chomper asked in confusion, though he didn't really feel that way after hearing a certain story. Rex understood his confusion and said with a smile, "Yes, Chomper, but let me explain. When we die, our bodies become the grass, and the Longnecks eat the grass." They reached the top of the hill and looked out to the rest of the kingdom as he said, "And so we are all connected in the Great Circle of Life."

"Ah, Good morning, sire!" Pterano said as he flew over the king and prince. King Rex was quick to return the greeting with a smile, "Good morning, Pterano."

"Checking in with the morning report." The Flier said as he landed on a rock. Rex let him speak, "Go on."

"Well!" Pterano said with a wing by his beak, "The buzz from the buzzing stingers is that the Frilled Spitters are in a bit of a spot."

"Oh, really." Rex asks. He was being polite as he usually listened to the reports from Pterano. Chomper tried to follow his father's example and listen to the Flier, but a small critter jumped off of a tall blade of grass. He smiled as he practicing his pouncing skills. When he tried to jump on the critter, it hopped away at the last second. As Pterano kept rambling on with his report, Rex happened to notice Chomper from the corner of his eye. As the small sharptooth made another leap, he asked when Chomper unknowingly missed it again by a second when he landed on a rock, "What are you doing, son?"

Chomper looked under his three fingered hands, but was disappointed when he didn't find anything as he said, "Pouncing."

"Let an old pro show you how it's done." Rex said as he leaned down to his son. He smiled as he had the perfect target in mind. Pterano was still going on with his report as he said, "I told that one herd of Longnecks to forget it, but they can't…"

"Pterano, would you turn around?" Rex asked as he still his head lowered to Chomper. Pterano didn't hesitate and complied, "Yes, your Highness." When he turned around he went back to his report, "The Threehorns are hard up, but…"

Chomper readied herself as he got into position with his rump in the air. Rex was quick to fix his son's mistake by placing his tail gently on Chomper's back and pushed it down while whispering, "Stay low to the ground."

"Threehorns never prosper…" Pterano continued with a wave of his wing. Chomper then whispered, "Yeah, okay. Stay low to the ground. Got it."

This drew Pterano's attention and he got suspicious as he asked, "What's going on?"

"A pouncing lesson." Rex was quick to answer while Chomper was still waiting to spring. Pterano was quick to dismiss it as he said, "Oh, very good. Pouncing." It took him a split second to realize who the target was. He lost a few feather's as he yelled, "Pouncing?!" He turned to them and pleaded, "Oh, no, sire, you can't be serious…"

But Rex was serious as he gave a smirk and with a single claw on his left hand told him to turn back around. With a sigh, Pterano reluctantly turned back around while saying, "Oh, this is so humiliating."

"Try not to make a sound. And make sure that you're able to get your arms around your prey." Rex whisper to the sill crouching Chomper as the cub smirked. Although Pterano heard the whispering, he couldn't make it out as he looked back and questioned, "What are you telling him, Rex?"

He looked back to find that both sharpteeth had mysteriously disappeared. He huddled in fear as he called out, "Rex? Chomper?"

He was met not with words but a tackled as Chomper knocked into him from behind, making Pterano scream as they tumbled into the dirt. This caused Rex to give a full hearted laugh as he found it really funny. Chomper stood over Pterano who was on his back, heard the approval in his father's laugh. He came walking over with his head held high. Rex, through a chuckle or two, commended on the pounce, "That's very good."

He continued to laugh as Pterano started to sit up. From underneath his head, a Tiny, but strong Longneck popped up from the ground and pushed Pterano into a sitting position. He saluted as addressed, "Pterano!"

"Yes!" The Flier said. The Tiny Longneck then reported, "Sir, news from the underground."

This made Pterano look to the Tiny Longneck with interest in what he had to say. Rex lowered himself and started to give Chomper another piece of advice, "Now, this time-"

"Sire!" Pterano as his head shot up from behind the rock. He looked frantic as he shouted, "Striped Fast Biters, in the kingdom!"

Rex became serious and pounded past his son and majordomo. As he started to run down the hill, he remembered Chomper and ordered, "Pterano, take Chomper back home."

"Aw, dad, can't I come with you?" Chomper asks as he walked over to the edge of the hill. Rex, though he knew that his son wanted to continue learning but feared for his safety, had a firm face as he said, "No, son."

With that said, Rex ran off to deal with the problem at hand. Pterano gave an understanding look as both he and Chomper watched the king rush off. The purple prince scoffed in annoyance before turning to the direction of home, "Pah! I never get to go anywhere."

Pterano smiled as his wanting to get in on the action and reassuringly said, "Oh, young master, one day you will be king." Chomper looked up to the Flier took flight and he said, "Then you can chase those slobbering mangy, stupid poachers from dawn until dusk."

The two of them then made their way back to Fang Rock.

Back at Fang Rock in a secluded section with a ledge, Scar-Eye walked alone. He had just returned and made sure to wash himself of the scent of the dark place within the Mysterious Beyond. The wait for his nephew was starting to make him made as he walked close to the edge before stopping in front of something. Then with an angry kick, he sent a bone flying off the edge. Scar-Eye watched it for a moment before starting to round the bend. But soon a voice from behind said, "Hey, Uncle Scar-Eye! Guess what?!"

The black sharptooth stopped in his tracks and turned his un-scarred eye towards the cub. Scar-Eye had no true love for his nephew, even though others in the pack thought he just didn't really like anyone and played it off. Scar-Eye mostly faked any love in front of his brother, the king. Chomper thought that his uncle was one of the greatest sharpteeth in the pack, next to his mother and father. He gritted his teeth and told his nephew, "I despise guessing games."

"I was just out learning with my dad about being King of Fang Rock." Chomper excitedly told him. Scar-Eye slowly turned his head away as the cub ran to the ledge and sarcastically said, "Oh, goody."

When he had reached the ledge, he told Scar-Eye what he had done this morning, "My dad just showed me the whole kingdom." He looked back to his uncle and said, "And he told me that it would be my job to protect it all." The purple sharptooth had a small smile as he proudly declared, "I'll make him proud."

"Yes. Well, forgive me for not leaping for joy." Scar-Eye said as he used the rock wall behind him to scratch his back. He looked a little angry as he said, "Not in the mood for it." Then he flopped down onto his side.

"Hey, Uncle Scar-Eye." Chomper said as he came over. He flopped down on his uncle's neck and asked, "When I'm king, what'll that make you?"

"A Rainbow Face's uncle." Scar-Eye deadpanned. Chomper chuckled to this as he rolled backwards off his uncle and laid on his stomach as he said, "You're so weird."

Scar-Eye turned his head to the cub and showed a toothy grin as he said, "You have no idea, little biter." Then rising into his feet, he asked as he walked to another portion of the ledge, "So, your father showed you the whole kingdom, did he?"

Chomper pushed himself off the ground and ran after his uncle while saying, "Everything. We even walked on the other side of the mountains."

"He didn't happen to show you what's beyond that rise by the northern border?" Scar-Eye asks as he gestures with his head to the place, "You know, a small ways away from the valley."

Chomper became disappointed as he sat down with his shoulders hunched and said, "Well, no. He said I can't go there."

"And he's absolutely right. It's far too dangerous!" Scar-Eye dramatically said. He then coolly said as he looked away, "Only the bravest Sharpteeth and dinosaurs go to that place."

"Well, I'm brave." Chomper said standing up. He became interested in the place and wanted to prove that he was indeed brave. He then tilted his head as he asked his uncle, "What's out there?"

"Oh, I'm sorry, Chomper. I just can't tell you." Scar-Eye shook his head while laying down. He turned his head away when Chomper gave him a pleading look. The small cub ran in front of his head and asked, "Why not?"

Scar-Eye looked to his nephew with a smile as he tried to reason as Chomper sat down again, "Chomper, Chomper, I'm only looking out for the well being of my favorite niece." He then lightly placed the tip of his tail over the cub's head and rubbed it with affection.

Chomper scoffed and moved to where he could see his uncle, "Yeah, right! I'm your only nephew."

Removing his tail, Scar-Eye then made it sound as if it were a good thing, "All the more reason for me to be protective." He leaned close to him as he said, "The Mysterious Graveyard is no place for a young prince." Having heard what came out of his mouth, he let out a fake yelp of surprise as he covered his mouth with his tail, "Oops!"

"The Mysterious what?" Chomper said as he was excited. He looked away and said, "Whoa!"

Then a thought crossed him and he asked, "Isn't that the place where Grandpa went?"

"It is." Scar-Eye said as he had a sad look on his face. He let out a sad sigh as he said, "It's where most dinosaur's go to complete their journey." Then he sounded distressed as he said, "Oh, dear, I've said far too much." Then he calmed himself as he made it sound as if Chomper would learn about it sooner or later, "Well, I suppose you'd have found out sooner or later. You being so clever and all." And just as Chomper was about to walk away, Scar-Eye wrapped his tail around the cub and pulled him close while saying, "Just do me one favor, Chomper." He rubbed heads with his niece as he made the cub promise, "Promise me you'll never visit that dreadful place."

Chomper thought it over a second before looking to his uncle and said, "No problem."

"That's a good kid." His uncle proudly said. Then using his tail to scoot his nephew away, he then said, "You run along now and have some fun." Chomper started to run off, but before he rounded the corner, Scar-Eye called out, "And remember!" Chomper looked back to his uncle as the older sharptooth said, "It's our little secret."

Chomper nodded with a smile before running off. Scar-Eye waited until he was sure that Chomper was gone. When his footsteps couldn't be heard anymore, the black sharptooth turned with a dark and sinister smile on his face.
