Chapter Six: A Father's Lesson
The sun started to set as Rex, Pterano, Chomper and Scales all made it back into the Great Valley. They were halfway between Fang Rock and the mysterious beyond as the day started to turn into night. They walked through the plains of the valley with Rex walking at a brisk pace. His footsteps caused tremors in the earth as he walked. Chomper and Scales both walked slowly with their heads hanging down in shame. Scales cast a quick glance to her friend but Chomper didn't say anything or look back at her. His mind couldn't help but think of how disappointment his father was with him. Pterano looked back to the cubs and couldn't help but feel sympathetic to them, Chomper in particular. His focus was sorely on the cubs that he was startled when he heard his king call to him, "Pterano!"
Quickly snapping to attention, Pterano flew in front of Rex. Landing at the Big Biters feet he looked up and fearfully asked, "Yes, Sire?"
"Take Scales home." Rex ordered with a gesture of his head. He glanced over to the cubs with narrowed eyes and said, "I need to teach my son a lesson."
Chomper saw that his father was looking at him and tried to hide himself in the grass. Scales watched and felt bad for her friend. Pterano quickly then said, "Go easy on him, Sire. I remember a young Big Biter who was always getting into scrapes. And it was even worse when he tried to get his brother out of those kinds."
"I know." Rex said as his anger started to subside. But with a shake of his head he said, "But if he doesn't learn now, then he won't become a good king."
"Yes, of course." Pterano nodded and took flight to the children. Rex took a deep breath before sitting down. When he landed, he regally stood before his charge and said, "Come, Scales." Then turning to Chomper he placed a hand on the boy's shoulder and said, "Chomper…" He sighed before saying, "Good luck."
Both Scales and Pterano turned the direction of Fang Rock when Pterano looked back and saw that Chomper looked truly guilty for what had happened. Pterano put on a comforting smile and said, "Don't worry so much, young master. Know that the king is slow to anger as he is quick to love."
Chomper looked up to the Flier before Pterano took to the air and flew ahead of Scales. As she followed her escort home, Scales looked back to her friend one last time. Chomper watched them go before his father called out, "Chomper!"
Chomper slowly turned to his father and started to walk to him. His head hung and the young sharptooth had no idea how he would make things right with Rex. But as he walked towards his father, he became surprised when his foot went deep into the ground. Taking a step back, he found himself looking down into the footprint of his father. Chomper then knew that he would have very big footprints to fill one day, and he now knew that he wouldn't be king if he did stuff like this again. Taking a deep breath, Chomper held his head up as he walked around the foot print and came to a stop beside his father and sat down next to him. Chomper didn't say anything as he looked up to his father. Rex didn't say anything at first as he closed his eyes. When he opened them again, Rex looked down to his son and said with great dissatisfaction in his voice, "Chomper, I am very disappointed in you."
"I know." Chomper said as he hung his head in sadness and shame. But Rex didn't stop as he said, "You could have been killed today. You deliberately disobeyed me." Rex's face became a mixture of both anger and shock as he added, "And what's worse, you went and put Scales in danger."
Chomper started to breath heavy as he thought about it and looked as if he were about to start crying. His voice slightly cracked as he looked to his father and said, "I was just trying to be brave like you."
Rex calmed down a little bit, because he knew that he was once like Chomper in trying to prove himself. Then taking a deep breath he pointed out, "I'm only brave when I have to be." Chomper had his head hanging as he thought about it when his father said, "Chomper." The Big Biter cub looked up as his father told him, "Being brave, doesn't mean that you go looking for trouble."
"But you're not scared of anything." Chomper said with a shake of his head. Rex took a moment as he looked ahead and then said, "I was today."
"You were?" Chomper asked, as it had surprised him. Rex nodded and he said, "Yes." Then lowering his head to his son he then told the reason for his fears, "I thought your mother and I might lose you."
"Oh." Chomper said and thought about what his father was telling him. Then he said with a smile, "So, I guess even kings can get scared, huh?"
"Mm-hmm." Rex said with a slight nod of his head. A mischievous smirk formed on the prince's face as he whispered, "But you know what?"
"What?" Rex asked with a whisper. Chomper leaned a little closer to his father and said, "I think that those Fast Biters were even more scared."
Rex started to laugh as he nuzzled his son and said, "That's cause nobody messes with you dad." Then with a halfhearted growl, he used his snout to push his son onto his back and started to tickle Chomper with his tail. Chomper laughed while trying to squirm away while shouting, "Oh, no! No! Aagh! Uhh!"
Then he gently bit his father's tail. Rex felt a little pain, but he knew that it wasn't much to worry about as he lifted his tail with Chomper still attached to it. Standing up himself, Rex maneuvered his tail and head to where he could set Chomper on it. Chomper let go of his father's tail and sat on Rex's head. The two sharpteeth gave a few more chuckles as they calmed down. Chomper looked down at his father and said, "Dad?"
"Hmm?" Rex said as he looked to the cub on his snout. Chomper then asks with a wide smile, "We're pals, right?"
"Right." Rex said with a chuckle, no longer angry about today's events. Chomper still smiled as he then asks, "And we'll always be together, right?"
Rex didn't answer this question right away. Though he did have an answer, he didn't know how exactly to tell his son. But Rex then remembered how his own father once told him, "Chomper, let me tell you something that my father once told me." Looking up to the sky he then said, "Look up at the stars." Chomper did as he listened to his father's words, "The great kings and queens of the past look down upon us from those stars."
"Really?" Chomper asked him in wonder. Rex looked to his son and said, "Yes." His next words would be there to comfort and guide his son, "Son whenever you should feel alone, Chomper, just remember that those kings and queens will always be there to guide you." He then added a little comfort to when he would join those stars, "And so will I."
"Did Grandfather tell you this when you were a prince?" Chomper asked, really wanting to know. Rex gently shook his head as he admitted, "No, these were his words when he passed on the mantle of king to me. It was also the last time I ever saw him before he parted to complete his circle."
"Oh." Chomper said, now feeling a little said. Rex then comforted him by saying, "Remember, Chomper, though it is said for one to part from the world, whether they be prey or predator, know that they go to a better place."
"Wow." Chomper said again, thinking that it sounded both sad and happy at the same time. Both sharpteeth continued to look up at the stars for a little while longer before Rex lowered his head. Once it was close to the ground, Chomper hopped off of his father's snout and the two began their journey back home.

Author's Note: I told you that it would be different. Though I did forget about the Tyrannosaur's arm situation in the last story, I did remember it this time. Though I won't change anything. But I hope that you did enjoy this chapter. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
