Chapter Eight: Apologies and Schemes

It was later that evening when Chomper and Rex finally made it back to Fang Rock. Rex let Chomper climb up the stone steps first and followed behind him soon enough. When they reached the top, Eda stood to the entrance of the cave waiting. She saw them walking over and she breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Oh, thank goodness."

She ran over to them and looked them over for any injuries. She saw that Chomper only had a few bruises and that Rex was a little worse for wear because of his bites and scratches. Eda sounded really worried as she asked, "Are you two alright."

"We're fine, Eda." Rex reassured with a nod. Looking down to Chomper he added, "We had a little scare, but everything's fine again."

Chomper smiled as he knew that things between him and his father were good again. But know he knew that he needed to apologize to his mother. Taking a step forward to his mother, Chomper said to Eda, "Mom, I'm sorry about betraying your trust."

"I should hope so." Eda said as she narrowed her eyes. Then she started to get motherly by saying, "What were you thinking? Going into the Mysterious Beyond like that! You're lucky your father and I were in the spot when Pterano landed so they could quickly go back for you. Do you have any idea what could have happened to you, Scales and Pterano?"

"I do. I really do." Chomper nodded. Eda looked to Rex and he said, "He really has learned the error of his actions." Looking down to his son he said, "And I know he'll think twice before doing something like that again."

"Is it true?" Eda asked Chomper as she looked down to him. Chomper nodded and said, "Yes. I've learned my lesson and won't go where I'm no supposed to go." With a bow of his head he then added, "I promise from the bottom of my heart."

Eda took a moment to think about before taking a deep breath and then said, "Very well, then." Turning, Eda gestured with her head and said, "Now let's get inside. It's time for bed."

Without another word, she headed inside of the cave. Chomper looked up to his father who only shrugged but then nodded to the cave. Chomper followed Rex inside and when they came upon the sleeping pack, the three sharpteeth stuck to the outside of the group to get to their spot. They reached the slightly raised ledge and Rex and Eda were the first to lay down. Before joining them, Chomper looked to the pack to see if he could see Scales anywhere, but couldn't see her amongst the sleeping sharpteeth. With a sigh, Chomper laid between his mother and father. The young purple Sharptooth slowly closed his eyes before he fully fell asleep.

Elsewhere, Scar-Eye, Redclaw and the Fast Biters were currently coming up with a new plan to make Scar-Eye king and get everyone what they've always wanted. They stood in a circle as Scar-Eye said, "In a few days, we'll end my brother and his brat with a stampede. My job will be to get the young prince to the tree down in the canyon near Saurus Rock, Screech and Thud will help out you three in starting the stampede. Redclaw's job will make sure to keep the hunting patrols away. If the runt survives the stampede, then the three will finish him off."

"Sounds good to me." Clawdette said and started to rub her snout. She growled as she said, "I owe that little brat for this anyway."

"And you will get it." Scar-Eye promised. He looked to each of his allies and said, "This plan must go without a hitch. Do you understand me?"

"Yes, Lord Scar-Eye." Redclaw and the Fast Biters said with a nod. A dark grin grew on Scar-Eye's face as he now had all the pieces he needed. Now all he needed was to put them in place. Looking to Screech, Thud and Clawdette he said, "Sometime around late afternoon tomorrow, be at the grazing fields and await my signal."

"Right." All three said. Redclaw then asked, "What if the boy isn't allowed to leave Fang Rock because of today's events? What will we do then?"

"I'll think of something." Scar-Eye reassured his friend. Then he added, "The boy will more than likely to do anything that will make his father proud of him. I'm sure I can persuade him."

"You'd better." Leaper said with a shake of his head, "Or else this plan will crash like a fearful Flier."

Scar-Eye growled at him and it shut the red Fast Biter up. The black Sharptooth then said, "Now Redclaw and I must return to Fang Rock to avoid being missed. But we will get word to you."

"Don't worry, Scar-Eye." Thud assured. Screech smiled and said, "We'll be at the rock that looks like a smaller version of Fang Rock."

Knowing where to look for the group Scar-Eye nodded. Turning to the entrance of the cave he said, "Come, Redclaw. Let us take our leave."

"Yes, sir." Redclaw said and followed his leader out of the Mysterious Graveyard. When they were just out of the forbidden territory, Redclaw looked to the black Sharptooth and asked, "Besides Screech and Thud, do you think those three will be able to keep to the plan?"

"Oh, they know better than to upset me again." Scar-Eye said while glancing back. He snorted as he said, "But they seemed so much better at their job when my brother became king than they did today."

"When your brother became king?" Redclaw asked, really confused. Scar-Eye looked back and said, "Let's just say that I tipped off Clawdette's clan of my father's arrival."

Redclaw gasped when he put it together and said, "You had them end your father's journey?" A smirk formed on his face as he said, "I didn't know that you could be so cold."

"Only to those who have wronged me." Scar-Eye said as he began to think about all that his brother had done to him. From their youth to the hunt to their father picking who would be king. Then he said, "And I will not wait any longer to be king."

Both Big Biter sharpteeth's foot falls caused the ground to shake as they walked through the night. With confidence in his voice, Scar-Eye had a grim expression on his face as he said, "By this time tomorrow, I will be king."

A few days later, Chomper was sleeping soundly against his mother's side when she started to stir. The young Sharptooth raised his head as Eda got herself off the ground and started to head for the cave entrance. Chomper looked around and asked, "Where's Dad gone?"

"He's probably out organizing the patrols, sweet Chomper." Eda said before telling him, "If you hurry, you can see him off."

"Okay." Chomper said before getting up. He followed her out of the cave and into the light. He blinked as the bright sun slightly hurt his eyes, but soon he got used to it. He looked about and sure enough he could see his father amongst a few other Big Biters.

Walking over he heard his father say, "There could be some prey near the southern wall. Try over there. I'll go along the eastern part of the valley to see if any of the herds are starting to move."

"Yes, sire." The group said before starting to move out. Rex watched them walk down the stone steps and started to head that way too. But he stopped when he looked down and saw Chomper standing at his feet. With a smile he said, "What is it, son?"

"Oh, I was just wanting to see you off, Dad." Chomper said with a smile as he looked up to the bigger Sharptooth. Rex lowered his arms and picked Chomper up with his hands before standing straight. The king then said to the prince, "Know that I'll always be proud of you, Chomper. No matter what you do."

"I know, Dad." Chomper said with a smile before rubbing his head against his father's snout. Rex then gently set Chomper on the ground and said, "Now I've got to go."

"Ok. Bye." Chomper said and waved his father. Rex smiled before turning to the path. As he walked off, Chomper said, "I love you, Dad."

"And I love you too, Son." Rex said before disappearing onto the plains. Chomper watched him go before turning to see Scales standing at the entrance of the cave.

Taking a deep breath, Chomper walked over to her and said, "Hi, Scales."

"Hi, Chomper." Scales said with a smile. He then asked, "Did you get into trouble when you and Pterano got back?"

"Oh, yeah." Scales nodded. Chomper searched for the right words before saying, "Um, I really am sorry about yesterday."

"It's okay, Chomper." She said with a smirk. But Chomper shook his head before saying, "No, it's not. I put you, me and Pterano in danger by going to that place. We could have been eaten."

"But we weren't." Scales said, not understanding why Chomper was being so hard on himself. Scales smiled as she said, "Chomper, it was incredibly dumb of us to go there."

Chomper let out a groan, not wanting to be reminded of how bad it was. But then she added, "But you did save my life from that Fast Biter. You also stood up to them right before we were saved by your dad. And we all made it out alive."

"She is right, young Master." A voice said from above. They looked up to see Pterano circling from above. The brown Flier landed in front of them and a twinge of guilt plagued Chomper. Taking a step closer, Chomper then said, "Pterano. I really am sorry about what happened yesterday."

"While I was a little upset about things that happened during the song," Pterano started to say, "I was more worried about the two of you while we were running for our lives. Plus," He slightly rubbed his backside and said, "The boiling water only hurt for a moment."

"Still…" Chomper tried to say. But Pterano raised a hand and said, "Still nothing. We made it out in one piece and I think we all learned a thing or two during that little adventure."

Chomper sighed as things still didn't feel right. Pterano placed his hand on the boy's shoulder and said, "Don't be too hard on yourself. You actually did a lot more than me."

"Huh?" Chomper asked in confusion. Pterano gestured to Scales with his other hand and said, "As we were walking home last night, Scales told me how you defended her when she needed it. That's a lot more than I did in that situation." Placing a hand under Chomper's chin he said, "And if he knew, I'm sure your father would be proud."

"Thanks, Pterano." Chomper said with a smile. Pterano nodded and then said, "Well, I'm off to go find your father. I'll see the two of you later."

Pterano started to flap his wings and took off into the Great Valley skies.

Author's Note: I know that I don't make the villain scenes long enough, and I'm sorry. Hopefully I can do better in the future. We get back to the main story in the next chapter. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
