Thanos cherished certain children of his. Not Nebula, never her. She was too far behind - but Gamora and Aduel. Those were the children he loved. He loved them equally, and they balanced each other. Gamora with her lovely green skin, and fiery red tips that painted the ends of her midnight black hair. Aduel with his gray skin, and pearly white hair and eyes, which both looked as if someone had taken clouds and attached them to the young adult.
Gamora manned the battlefield, and Aduel handled the statistics. Sure, Thanos normally, liked strong children and soldiers, but Aduel had stood out amongst his peers on his planet, Haneul. All the other children had egos bigger than suns, and while they had muscles to match - they all lacked intelligence. Except for Aduel. Who had managed to make remarkable tech in a lacking society. The child would do well with him, and so, Thanos had brought Aduel onto his ship, and filled him with ideas, knowledge - and a thirst to prove himself to his newly-deemed Father.
However, Aduel was a young child - only 7. He did not know of patience, so when Thanos was reluctant to give him the praise he wanted, he set his sights on other things. He tried all sorts of fighting - failed at all but a style called martial arts from a planet named earth. He'd never beat Gamora, who was 13 at the time, and was a trained warrior. Aduel somewhat expected to have parts of him removed by Thanos - like Nebula, but nothing happened.
Nebula and Aduel had always been close - much closer than Aduel and Gamora, much to the dismay of their father. Nebula often kept Aduel company when he was tinkering with his tools. However, he'd yet to invent something that impressed their Father. Something Gamora criticized, but to Aduel, building was more than Father. Building and making things were his, and after a few years he didn't want to make things that would hurt people.
"But Father-" "No more discussions. Go back to your work room. We have an important planet coming up." "But-" "I SAID NO MORE DISCUSSIONS, GO TO YOUR ROOM." Aduel jumped, and scampered quickly to his room. It wasn't that he hadn't been disciplined or punished as a child -believe me he did- but Father's voice was threatening even at a soft whisper. Yelling sent all of Aduel's nerves off. It didn't help that his species had 2 groups Fight or Flight. Basically, at 5 years old, you got told if you were a Fighter or a Flighter. A fighter's job is to fight and protect. A flight eras job is to raise children, be motherly, things of the sort - you can guess what group Aduel got into. (it was Flighters)
But they were treated like queens. It didn't matter what gender you were if you were a Fighter you couldn't birth children, only Flighters could - no matter the gender. In fact, at some point in history, Flighters were treated like house slaves. They revolted and refused to give birth - committing suicide if they were forced pregnant. Aduel admired these heroes, and since then, had wanted to do good, just like them.
However, he found it almost impossible to do that while working for his father. He constantly demanded more. He destroyed Aduel's medical research numerous times. And Aduel slowly began to resent the man he once admired. That feeling only strengthened when Thanos began to tear Nebula apart. There were a lot of times where Aduel would sit with her, and go over memories - the brain transplant wasn't 100% fool-proof, and Aduel found she had forgotten a lot of memories about him. Nebula became cold, and forgot all about Aduel.
So, Aduel left her to her devices - but not after she sliced his left eye, which left him partially blind. Fa- Thanos had not been happy, and Nebula suffered immensely. After both Gamora and Nebula left to assist Rowan, Aduel let his hair grow out, and found caring for it to be quite calming. Which was heavily needed - both his siblings had turned against Thanos and he now pushed Aduel harder than ever to make better weapons.
He soon lost hope of ever escaping his father's clutches - when a beautiful man with black hair and emerald eyes fell from the sky. The man was unconscious, injured, and dressed like royalty - he probably was. Aduel knew that Thanos would report something like this, but in a tiny act of rebellion, he decided against it. Besides, what harm could it do?
