The Volvo edged towards one of the houses right at the end of the suburban area, the backyard facing the thick tree line just like Charlie's house. The woman blew out some steam from her mouth as she rubbed her hands before smiling at us.
"Come on in then," she said, quickly getting out and hurrying the path towards the door.
I was about to follow when I felt Edward pull on my arm.
"Wait, I don't like this." He muttered.
"What is it?" I asked.
"That woman, her thoughts…it's, it's like she's deliberately thinking of other things. Her thoughts have no real pattern, almost like she's jumping from random topic to another." Edward trained a wry look to me. "Like you are when you're hiding something from me."
"I'm not hiding anything from you right now." I said plainly.
"Neither am I," Stephen said suddenly, poking his head between us.
Edward calmly turned to look at my best friend for a minute before nodding.
"Well she is," he said finally.
I gazed at the two men before nodding my head. "Well, can we at least go in? if she tries to pull something we'll be careful." I said.
Edward took another moment before shrugging. "Fine,"
The inside of the woman's house was bright and open; warm from where the electric heater could be heard buzzing as she rubbed her hands together, smiling at us.
"It should be really warm here. You can remove your jackets if you want, just leave them." She trilled a high laugh and I reached down to take Edward's hand, his squeezing mine reassuringly.
"Do you want some tea? I just made some before I heard about you coming." She said.
"I'm fine." Edward said immediately.
"Um, I guess," Stephen said while I just politely smiled.
She nodded and left to go inside as Edward clicked his tongue. "There is something so off about her."
"She'll hear you." I said, shushing him just as she came in with her tray full of tea things.
"Go ahead," she offered, sitting down on a couch as we copied her.
"So, I'm sorry but we don't know your name." I said, slowly.
"Oh, I'm Lizzie. I should've told you before I brought you here." she said followed by another laugh.
"And you know Emily Sorenson," Edward prompted, one hand landing on my knee as he keenly gazed at 'Lizzie'.
"The Sorenson's were my neighbors before I moved. Emily and I were very good friends. Best friends, you could say,"
"So what happened to them?" Stephen asked mouth already full.
Lizzie hesitated.
"I suppose you could say there were problems with them. Don't get me wrong. Roosevelt loved Emily but…" she looked at me suddenly.
"I think I have pictures. Do you want to see them?" she asked.
Stephen froze, Edward's hand tightened on my knee. I opened my mouth and closed it like a fish.
"I…"
Lizzie tilted her head, waiting for a response with those big eyes. I glanced helplessly at Edward.
"Well, would you like to see them?"
I could see the violent urge of saying no in both men but I slowly shrugged. "Sure," I said.
Lizzie smiled softly before beckoning me towards the stairs, "I have them up in my room. Follow me, you boys can finish the tea." She said, as she waved her hand for me to come with her.
She started to climb as I stood up and Edward gripped my hand. "I'll be right here, listening. One thing goes wrong and I'll be there."
"What are the chances that something does?" I asked drily.
"Knowing us, a solid 99.8 percent," Stephen said, earning a smack at his arm as I went up the stairs, hearing Stephen say "I don't like this, man," to Edward.
When I reached upstairs, Lizzie was already at her dresser, fumbling with something. She looked up at me just as I entered, pointing over at the shelves.
"There she is, right in the centre."
I obeyed and looked where she was pointing to see a red haired woman with her arm slung around Lizzie. Her smile was motherly and her eyes were kind as she gazed at the camera.
"Tell me about her," I said softly.
"She was a brilliant woman. Really, imaginative and had a lot of ideas…she was very into conspiracy theories. That's understandable with what her husband taught. I think it was her who pushed Roosevelt into Dimension research. It was all good for a while. Then she disappeared."
There was a sigh as I looked at the other pictures of the two neighbors doing stuff together.
"It broke Roosevelt. I don't know how but he got the idea that she was pulled into another dimension. He would just not accept that she was murdered if he didn't see a body."
I turned to look at her.
"How do you know she was murdered?"
"A woman goes out and vanishes in thin air without taking a few things and isn't heard from ever again. You do the math."
I turned around again.
"Roosevelt left soon after. I would've never thought that he'd go to Forks but I guess things didn't really let him get hold of himself. Except…"
She paused.
"Except…?"
"You showed up."
I turned and stopped.
Lizzie had her hand up to her shoulder, fist clenched tight around a small hand gun. Her eyes were narrowed as she gazed stonily at me.
As for me, I'd completely blanked. My hands remains at my side, loose, as for a split second, I heard the bang in my head from when James had compelled a night guard to shoot him in the head. I felt the warmth of blood ooze from my head and the darkness that came with dying but then the pain of being hit in the face by a fully grown man brought me back.
"What?" I asked breathily and Lizzie sighed.
"I'm sorry, girl, I really am but I have to do this. I was told that you would be coming but I was hoping that you would never come. You'd have been safer if you hadn't but if I don't do this, she'll kill me."
"Who…who's going to kill you?" I said.
My mind fragmented, one part focusing hard and I let out a mighty mental scream for Edward. The other focused on keeping Lizzie talking so she wouldn't press the trigger.
Wait, just let her answer, I begged Edward in my mind, wanting nothing more than Lizzie to spill out Stephanie's name.
There was a large thud and both our heads turned towards the sound before Lizzie frantically aimed at me again.
"You showed up with a vampire. I…I'm only doing this to live." She said and I just had the chance of seeing tears glimmering on her face before I felt rather than saw her shoot the gun.
In those few seconds, time stopped as the door banged open and I just barely saw Edward's white face blur in my vision before he was standing in front of me, facing me, his frame curling over me protectively before bucking as the bullet met his skin.
He grunted and I heard a loud wail as Stephen launched himself at the woman, one hand grasping her gun hand and aiming away as he put her in a head lock.
I kept staring, too slow on the uptake as Edward's hands shot out to balance his body when I moved.
"Edward," I gasped, my hands reaching his shoulder as he sat with a huff on the floor, breathing deep and slow. He moved to point at his back and I quickly pulled his jacket from his back to see a pool of deep red blossoming around his mid back.
"No, no, what is happening? What do I do?" I yelled, and Edward winced.
"Nothing, it's fine, I just need to get the bullet out. Just…just pull it out." He gritted.
"But, shouldn't I call Carlisle?"
"You could, but I need to heal before I lose too much blood or," he met my eyes and I quickly nodded in understanding. Losing too much blood would make him weak, he would get antsy unless he fed and he would get more tempted around me and Stephen.
"Here, grab her and I'll do it," I heard Stephen say calmly as he pushed Lizzie to the hard floor, the hand gun clutched his hand that he forwarded to me.
"I…I can't," I said, recoiling from the gun.
"Hey," I looked down to see Edward, his face pinched but eyes, concerned fixed on me. "Are you ok?"
For a second it wasn't Edward's face but Stephen's dead face in front of me and I shook myself, looking at the crying woman on the floor and then Stephen who looked confused, still holding the gun out.
"Yes, yes I'm fine."
Bet you didn't see that coming hah?
Gifts will be accepted in the form of reviews, much thanks!
