Dear gods I am so freaking tired so I'll keep it short.
This is the last chapter of Touch in the Worlds series! Whoo for all of us! There will be an epilogue of course but I want your opinion! Please check the Author's Note at the end!
Reviews:
Varsini C P - I hope you liked it though!
Ok, so like I once said, there was going to be (supposed to be) a huge HUGE twist in the last chapter. I brushed by it but in the end I decided not to go with it because well...I wanted to survive.
Enjoy!
"This is horrible, even for us." I muttered.
Stephen snorted, hands rubbing together in front of him as he crossed them on his knees.
We had been sitting on the steps of the house Emily had been using for a short while, trying not to think about the…mess right behind the closed door.
It had taken a good while to get Stephen to come down the stairs and he had done so stiffly, back ramrod straight as he looked anywhere but the…well, Emily. It was a mutually silent agreement to pull the door shut and wait for rescue outside.
Turns out, Emily's hideout hadn't been too far away from my neighbourhood. She was probably keeping watch and waiting for me to show up. There were still questions as to how she'd changed course of space time breaks but as Sorenson had explained, there was no certainty to where one break led.
"How did you find us?" I asked.
"I came first. I don't even know if the Cullens made it to be honest. I'm sure they did." He said, correcting himself hastily upon the look on my face.
I sighed.
"But how did you know to come here?"
"Process of Elimination, the last time I was here, I'd walked by the house and I'd…been spooked by it. Removing all the houses that have people living in it, I knew this is where you would be. Also, because, well, I saw her…she came down with takeout."
It was my turn to snort.
"So, pure chance,"
"Hey, she got lazy, not my problem."
He stopped suddenly and I saw him glance over his shoulder before sighing quietly.
I quickly got to distracting him.
"Did you see where Stephanie got to?"
"Ran off somewhere, I didn't see, I was too busy looking for you. I don't blame her though, who knows how long she'd been down there. She'll have to either come back for stuff or she might be able to get help somewhere else." He said.
I nodded thoughtfully, shifting a little on the step before looking back at him.
"Hey, about the…what you said…"
Steph looked uncomfortable as he looked down at his shoes.
"Look, I didn't mean what I said. I know what it looked like and all but I just wanted to get close to Emily to get the gun." He said.
"No, I know that. I was a bit worried back there but yeah, I just wanted to say thank you." I said.
Stephen smiled slightly.
"Anytime partner,"
There was a pause.
"Just…don't tell Edward, you know."
I laughed.
And speaking of the devil…
"You know we might have to go check to see if they did make it," Stephen was saying when there was a rustle of leaves in the small clump of trees across the road.
Even as Steph finished his sentence, four figures emerged from the tree line, looking creepily like the time the Volturi had come to the clearing where the newborns had been killed.
Maybe it was just a vampire thing…
Stephen and I glanced at each other, getting to our feet together, just in case it wasn't who we thought.
The one in the middle moved the fastest, blurring in a mesh of grays before he was standing right in front of us, making us jump.
"You do it on purpose!" Stephen groaned, taking a step back to square his shoulders, shrugging off his flinch when Edward turned to look at me, fully ignoring Stephen.
Oh…he was angry…
"Hi," I squeaked.
He didn't speak.
"Um, I'm fine." I ventured.
No answer.
I caught Alice, Jasper and Emmett come to stand in his flanks, looking at their brother stare me down.
"Are…we…going to focus on something here?" Emmett tried.
"Yeah, we should, we have things to care about before authorities get here." I began to say when finally my boyfriend spoke up.
"We wouldn't have a problem if you hadn't done what you did."
Oh lovely…
"I didn't do much, I just went first."
"You did it on purpose. Don't lie to me, we saw the note you left Stephen and Alice."
It was Alice's turn to wince.
"Yeah, so, well I didn't hide anything did I?" I asked.
Edward raised his hand to rub it down aggressively down his face. "What would've happened if we'd been lost? If Alice hadn't gotten your visions or messages,"
"I had full faith in her." I smiled at the petite girl and she let out the most beautiful grin while Edward grumbled under his breath.
"Um guys, we can give each other the third degree later, we kind of have a dead body inside and I kind of put it there." Stephen said.
There was a beat in while the vampires all turned to look at Stephen with varying degrees of horror and shock before Jasper was moving into action, quickly sidestepping Edward to grasp his shoulder.
"We need to move. Fast," he ordered his gentle voice and I didn't know if it was his gift or not but Edward melted like butter, signalling us to wait with Alice while the vampire men entered the house.
The next few minutes were spent with Alice, Stephen and I standing outside, tense while there was a shut door barring us from the work of Edward, Jasper and Emmett to get rid of Emily's body.
I wondered what they would do about it…bury it, burn it?
Stephen stuck close to me as Alice paced about in front of us in tight circles, eyes closed as if she was watching what was going on inside.
Knowing her, that was absolutely what she was doing.
"I feel awful." Stephen said.
"For killing Emily?" I asked.
"No, because I scuffed my shoes…yes, of course, I killed someone, Tulika." He stared off before his eyes widened and his hands began to shake.
"Oh my god…I killed her. I'm a murderer."
I jumped when he stood up, his athletic body vibrating where he stood as he began to sweat.
Alice stopped walking, turning elfin eyes to our friend.
"He's having a panic attack." She said before she was standing in front of Stephen, placing small soft hands on his shoulders.
"Oh…I…" I shifted, eyeing my best friend as he blustered under his breath. It was horrible, watching his skin turn reddish as his breath shortened. I had no idea how to deal with a panic attack. I couldn't even help him.
"Should I call Jasper?"
"Yes, please." She said calmly.
I nodded quickly, spinning on my heel to push the door open, immediately meeting a scene that was probably going to give me nightmares for a good many years.
Edward and Emmett had lifted the crumpled body of Emily Sorenson, placing a sheet under it and her body hung grotesquely, the joints that had broken sticking out in inhuman angles.
I stopped, staring at the now closed eyes of my now dead enemy when Edward let out a groan.
"Love, you don't need to see this." he said.
"I…um, actually Stephen's having a panic attack over; you know, doing that." I said blankly, pointing at the body in their arms.
"We need Jasper."
The honey haired vampire nodded, looking at his brothers and the men made a shooing motion as Jasper joined me, gently moving me away from the door and tugging the door shut before making his way over to Stephen, taking Alice's place in front of him.
"It's just the shock settling in. You didn't do anything bad. You just…brought an end to her madness." I heard him slowly mutter and looked away.
The night had turned even colder, almost windless as I glanced to see that Alice had turned motionless again, eyes closed.
I sighed, moving away from the trio to the gates of the property.
I was so close to home, what would happen if I were to just…stay?
A small figure caught my eyes and I squinted to see better under the streetlight as finally Stephanie emerged again, looking a little lost.
She started when she saw me at the gates.
"Oh," she said sheepishly, "I didn't expect to still find you here."
I stared.
"I came to talk it out with Emily. We can still go home." She muttered. "I'm sorry about what she did but we can get her help."
"She's dead." I said.
Her face dropped.
"What?" she asked.
"Emily…she…fell down the stairs. She's…she snapped her neck. She's gone." The words sounded blunt, I knew but there was no way I could show sympathy. I had none to give.
Stephanie stayed where she was when I swung the gate inwards to let her in.
"I…what am I supposed to do?" she whispered.
"The right thing, I guess, whatever that is. You could tell your folks the truth." I said.
"They wouldn't believe me."
"I know."
We watched each other.
"I need to see her." She said finally.
It was surprising, not to see Stephanie shed any emotion for her sister but I supposed I understood. She had already lost her sister. This was just physical.
I let her pass me by to head to the house.
She deserved to say goodbye to what was left of her sister at the very least.
There was one good thing about trauma.
Experiencing it in real time seemed to blur out the finer details, making time go fast.
In the end they buried Emily, Stephanie standing a few steps closer to the group as the three vampire males worked in a speed that could only be boasted about by their species.
Maybe it was the death of her sister, or the fact that these were the same people because of whom she had gone mad but Stephanie didn't seem much taken with the idea of chit-chatting with them.
After the burial had been covered, she had a lengthy conversation with Jasper and Alice while Edward and Emmett stayed close to me and Stephen.
"Do you want to…?" Edward asked finally.
I looked up from the ground to see his looking straight ahead, eyes on the lit window of my living room.
"I…did." I whispered, turning to follow his gaze. "I don't think I can."
"Tulika…"
"They don't deserve it. They don't deserve the pain of not understanding. It's been two years, Edward. I have to let go." I said.
Edward had dropped it after that, quietly sneaking me in through my bedroom window, watching as I turned my back on him, lying on my bed, taking in a deep breath and closing my eyes as small droplets of tears betrayed my control, slipping out without my permission.
There was a sigh before Stephen joined me, carefully wrapped a hand around my shoulder as we waited for whatever break in space time there was in my room to slip us where we wanted to be at.
This was farewell to my world.
The sound of rain pattering against glass woke me up.
I kept my eyes closed, soaking in the sound of the familiar surroundings before letting out a long breath, opening my eyes to see the gray square of sky you could see from the window in my bedroom in Forks.
The sight should've relieved me that we made it but all it gave me was a heavy lead dropping in my heart.
Part of me wanted to go back to sleep, try and see if I could wake up in my own bedroom or not, now that I knew how to work the mechanics of dimension breaks but I couldn't.
I had to let go.
Getting out of bed, I padded my way across the cold floor to look down at the sheeting rain wash across the tops of Bells' truck…and the cruiser behind it. Charlie was home.
Coming down the stairs took a lot more than my usual time, considering I took a good extra twenty minutes talking myself into getting back into pace and checking myself for any marks that might make Charlie suspicious.
"Morning," Charlie said when I entered the kitchen, unbothered and sipping his coffee.
"Hey," I mumbled. "Did you want breakfast?"
"I've had about four mugs of coffee so I think that will have to wait." He grinned, moustache crinkling a little.
"Are you going to work?"
"I might turn in for a few. You got any plans to hang out with the Cullens? By the way, don't think I haven't noticed the time you've been spending overnight there, young lady." He said.
I reddened.
"I was with Alice! It's not,"
He shook his head.
"Just stay in tonight, ok? For my sanity," he said before gesturing to the living room. "You've got mail by the way."
He left the kitchen as I turned with a frown, following him out to see a box placed on the coffee table.
"It better not be Edward's fancy idea of college." I muttered, moving to slam a hand on the envelope atop the box.
It wasn't.
A slightly loopy handwriting wrote out my full name along with the address to the Swan house but no return name or address. Maybe the sender thought it wouldn't be a bother as everyone knew the Chief.
Glancing down at the box with a similar tag, my frown deepened.
Well, there was no choice but to open it, I thought to myself, hefting the box and carrying to my room, tossing it on the bed to open the envelope.
A sheet of A4 size folded paper fell out when I shook it on my hand.
I smoothed it out, rubbing out the creases to read before moving to the bed, tucking in my legs as I read it.
Tulika,
I know this is a cowardly thing to do.
If I had the nerve to come in front of you and face you I would but it seems I don't have half the daring you possess. So, for this matter, I think hiding behind a pen is my way to go.
There are a lot of questions that you had asked me and I had no answers to give. That was a lie. I had answers. I just didn't want to give them, say it out loud because you see, in a way I was trying to wash out my guilt.
Emily's obsession was the reason I started my work on Dimensional sciences but it was my work in turn that gave her the key to fiddle with the strings. I armed her with the knowledge of running amok with not only our but your world and for that I cannot apologize enough.
Perhaps if I had been less scared of her I might have spoken to her, tried to understand her motivations but I did not…
I ran away.
If you ever come across her, any way how it ends, let it rest there. I don't think I want to know anymore.
I do not know if you will ever be able to go home but if you do and you decide to stay, know that for me, it was an honor to know you and Stephen.
If, you decided to stay here…
I leave you my work.
Everything that ever came to my life and destroyed it…I leave to you. I have no one else I would give it to. Share it with your friends. Maybe you can make better use of it than I and my wife did.
I am leaving Forks. I might not come back.
I hope you live the life you want to.
All my regret and best wishes,
Roosevelt Sorenson.
"Are you not going to sleep?"
I jumped, spinning around and nearly dripping the tome I'd pulled out of Sorenson's box to read. Edward was standing at my open window, his hair and tops of his clothes brushed with rain. It hadn't stopped since I'd woken up and I had been grateful for it. It felt like the rain was washing out the horror that had swept in my life.
"What are you doing here?" I whispered, stashing away the book before his eyes could dart towards it.
He walked further in, sitting down on the desk chair to take off his shoes and jacket. "I wanted to check up on you. Why are you awake?" he asked.
"I…" I paused before shrugging noncommittally. "I just didn't want nightmare." I said.
He looked up at me, "Is that a legit concern or did you just want to continue reading whatever you just tried to hide from me?"
Busted…
"I wasn't hiding; I just didn't want you to worry. Not that there is anything to worry about anymore,"
He waited.
I sighed, sliding out the letter from my desk to hand to him. He didn't make much of a comment.
Edward carefully folded it, placing it on the table before taking my hand.
"The first thing you do is reading up?" he questioned. The wording might have seemed accusatory but I could see the brewing amusement in his eyes.
I lifted my shoulders in a 'what can you do' manner.
He smiled, shaking his head fondly before standing up to move to my bed. "Come here, lie down, I'll keep the nightmares away."
I eyed him before shaking my head, getting in and letting him gather me up into the nook of his arm, pressing my head under his chin.
"Better?"
"I don't know if I can sleep." I admitted.
"That's alright. We can talk till you can." He murmured.
I watched the rain and how it fell on the sill of my window before speaking. "How's Stephen?" I asked.
"Rosalie went to keep an eye on him but he said he wanted to be alone for a while. Alice told me the same about you" he admitted.
"I'll talk to him tomorrow. Maybe show up at his doorstep with cookies or muffins," I pondered. "What did you tell Alice?"
"I said no way in hell."
We laughed.
There was more silence as the comforting sound of falling water and the warm scent wafting from Edward lulled me.
"It's really over, isn't it?" I whispered my eyes falling shut.
There was a beat as Edward pressed a kiss to my temple, letting us slide further down on the bed.
"Yes love, it's over."
And that's that!
I don't want to cry as of yet because I am going to procrastinate with the Epilogue a lot! Or maybe I will just publish it this month, who knows?
A/N: I have a few questions and announcement to make!
Ok, so firstly HOW DID YOU LIKE IT?
Secondly, do you want the Epilogue to have Edward or Stephen? (I might just make a poll for this! Please watch out for it or just let me know!)
And lastly, Questions are open! You can send them to me on my social media, PM me or in the reviews!
Happy Reading!
