Wow last chapter huh?
I don't have much to say. I'll just bawl my eyes out in the End Note.
The edges were a bit wobbly, I noticed after I'd knocked on Ben's front door, waiting for someone to open it. There were sounds of movement inside before it was swinging in, a pale face looking out at me.
"T, what are you doing here?" he asked.
True to my word, I'd baked chocolate chips, making sure to make them good and chewy before setting out to see Stephen. I hadn't deigned to inform him, knowing he would vehemently protest it.
I forwarded the box of cookies to him, his eyes flashing down to it in shock.
"I baked."
"You…baked?"
I nodded solemnly.
He stared out at me incredulously before rolling his eyes, opening the door wider to let me slip in.
"Ben's gone already. It's just me and his mom now." He notified, leading me to sit on the couch of the living room.
I hummed, watching as he pried open the lid of the Tupperware, sniping one out to bite into it. Chewing onto it with minute bites, he paused, looking at me.
"Did someone help you make these?"
"Nope,"
"They're amazing. Thanks,"
I smiled.
"So,"
He groaned immediately, "I know why you're here and I appreciate the cookies but can we please not talk about it?" he hissed.
"It doesn't bother you?"
"I…look; I had time to process, ok? I didn't push her down the stairs. She fell. So, I'm not really all that guilty." He said.
I frowned.
"I'm not. And…I wanted to tell you before but I couldn't…I got accepted." He finished.
"Hang on…you got into…"
"Yeah," Stephen grinned. "There was a free spot and I snagged in. I leave this weekend for Dorm." He said.
"Oh my god," I whispered standing up so I could hug him. His arms wrapped tight around my side as he kept munching on the cookies with the other.
"I'm happy for you, really." I said, patting his back.
"I know, now don't you go replacing me with a new partner." He warned.
I smacked his arm.
"Never,"
The meadow had grown green again.
Lying back against Edward's chest, his soft breathing in my ear, I could almost pretend like the last few weeks hadn't happened at all.
"Did Alice and Jasper settle in?" I asked.
"Yes," Edward wound a tendril of hair around his finger. "Did Stephen and Jacob?"
I smiled. "Bella was about to cry when Steph showed up. Jacob is going to visit if Dorm goes well." I murmured.
Around us, the soft floral air wafted, cool and refreshing, small purple, blue and yellow petals bloomed. I could stay here forever.
"What about you?" he asked.
"What about me?"
"What are you going to do for college?" he asked.
I sighed, sitting up straighter to turn to look at Edward; his eyes had turned gentle gold, hints of moss hidden deep within. His cheeks were flushed with the result of his latest hunt.
"I don't know." I finally answered. "I feel like my purpose has…dwindled. I don't even know why the hell Emily sent me here and now with her gone, I kind of feel…like there's no point of a future for me."
Edward was silent for a little before smiling.
"It's ok to feel directionless, love. It doesn't lessen your worth. You have plenty of time to decide." He said reaching out for me so I could lean against him again.
"If not there's always vampirism." I muttered.
I could physically feel Edward rolling his eyes. "We'll see."
Charlie was home by the time Edward dropped me home, the sun had set in a pool of oranges, leaving behind a deep inky sky of clouds while his fingers gripped on me in his car, soft kisses pressed to my skin until we both decided to head home.
"Hey," I called, catching him in the living room, watching TV.
"Hi," he turned to glance at me. "Edward?" he asked.
"Went home," I said, joining him on the couch.
He hummed, raising his beer bottle to his lips before reconsidering. "I needed to talk to you about something." He said.
I turned to him.
"About the whole Sorenson thing…and the whole Cullen thing, and a lot of other things I know you think I didn't pay attention to."
I was silent.
Charlie placed the heavy bottle on the coffee table.
"I trust you, you know that. I don't know a lot of things that happen in this town but I have some ideas and I just want to know if you're safe."
I glanced at the television, a montage behind my eyes. James's screaming, Victoria's headless body, Riley's neck turned all the way around, Emily lying broken at the foot of a staircase…
I shivered before looking at Charlie.
"I'm safe, Charlie. It's going to be fine. We're all going to be fine." I said.
I shouldn't be doing this…
I stared down at the phone, with the small list of numbers in my hand that I had unearthed from my desk drawer. It had stayed shut a while now, a necklace lying inside on tissues, it's splendor still glowing and a crumpled ball of paper next to it.
A paper containing connecting numbers straight to Voltaire…and a small elegant scribble of Alec's number.
I wasn't sure who it was that had put it in my pocket, Gina or Alec himself…maybe even Jane but now I was considering whether it was a good idea to let my Singer know of what had happened.
Finally, I let out a loud exhale, fishing out my phone to dial the numbers and letting it ring…ring…ring…
"Tesoro,"
How in the world was his voice able to do this?
"Alec," I breathed, hearing him shuffle in the background. Was he asleep?
"Yes,"
I paused, my toes tapping nervously as I waited for him to say something else.
"Was there something you needed? Are you safe? Do you need me?"
"I…I'm fine, I just…you know, the woman who sent me here?"
"Yes,"
"She's dead."
There was silence.
I couldn't help it. With barely a breath I was rambling, telling Alec of the way we'd worked out way to my own world, the way she had manipulated portals and how she died.
"I wish I could've been there, Tesoro. I regret not being able to keep you safe."
"It…it really wasn't your fault."
"You would think so."
I picked at the threading of my duvet.
"I just wanted to tell you. To be honest I was nervous as all hell. I didn't know if I should."
"You can tell me anything,"
"Yeah…same for you…I guess."
There was another awkward pause. Awkward on my part, it felt like out of the two of us, Alec was at his most ease.
"So, I'll…I don't know what to say, see you around? Talk to you later?"
"You can say goodnight." I could hear the smile in his voice.
"Right, of course," I chuckled, grasping the device closer to my ear. "Goodnight Alec,"
"Buonanotte, Amore."
So that's it!
That's the end of Touch in the Worlds as a series!
I'll be honest I did NOT want to write the ending at all but I pushed myself to finish it at the end. After all, there are more stories to tell!
I added a little bit of everything I felt there should've been to nicely wrap it up!
I didn't get any questions but I did get asks for scenes in between thr storylines.
If demand if high enough I might make a work specifically dedicated to the scenes that weren't featured in the main story!
For now,
Adieu!
