(A/N Sorry it's been a minute since my last upload, I just have been trying to come up with a way for Nala to get back home. If anybody has suggestions I'm open to them. Until then here's a bit about Nala and Trey going camping)
Gray. The sky was gray and the wind was only getting colder. This wasn't at all what Trey had planned, according to the forecast it was supposed to be sunny and decently warm. That was the only reason he had decided to go on a camping trip in the middle of November.
"This should only take a second." He said as he pulled the car to the side of the road to see if the forecast app on his phone had changed it's predictions at all. He was very disappointed to find he didn't have any phone signal but wasn't surprised, he knew he was going to lose it at some point. Nala sat in the passenger seat of his car, although she was getting so big she could barely fit comfortably anymore. Trey knew eventually he was going to have to get a bigger car, according to the books he had been reading about lion biology she had almost grown to her full size. She had been with him for just over a year now, and if what he read about how lions age was correct that meant that she had been with him for longer than she had been with her family.
According to their map they had gotten pretty far away from any towns or freeways and their destination was even less likely to have any phone signal. Trey turned the radio on and fiddled with then dial, trying to find a news station. Eventually he found what seemed to be a local NPR affiliate, although they could barely make out what was being said through the static. The signal seemed to be growing stronger as they drove though, and they were both happy that at least something seemed to be in their favor.
"How much longer until we get there?" Nala asked him after a few more hours of driving. The sky had only gotten darker but thankfully it had yet to start raining.
"Well, you've got the map spread out in front of you. What number does it say next to the campsite I circled?"
Nala studied the map for a moment. Trey had been teaching her to read as best he could, she had taken to it surprisingly quickly and could now read en par with a middle schooler.
"546" She replied after a few seconds,
"Alright, that tells us what mile marker the campsite is next to. We just passed marker 500 and since we're going 30 miles per hour that means we have about an hour and a half."
"Can we stop before then? I need to go to the bathroom." The lioness said sheepishly, even though she knew she had nothing to be embarrassed about.
Trey pulled the car over at the next spot with a shoulder big enough for him to. He walked around the car and opened the door for Nala, who ran off into the woods yelling a 'Thank you!' out as she did. Trey stood next to the car and a few minutes later she returned from the woods. They got back in the car and resumed their journey, the sun starting to set. Trey was thankful he had chosen to get a cabin rather than bring a tent, he didn't want to have to deal with setting up a tent in the dark and the cold.
90 minutes later they passed mile marker 546, and a few minutes after that they reached their destination, Scorpion Creek Campsite. The sun had totally set now and the clouds made it incredibly dark and hard to see. Trey drove the car onto the dirt road and followed it until he reached their cabin, Cabin Number 3. He turned the car off and the radio went quiet, he hadn't ended up hearing a forecast but he had heard an interesting bit about hydroelectric damns and the signal had gotten much clearer.
"Looks like we're the only ones here." He said to Nala as he got out of the car and walked around to her door.
"Yup. I didn't smell or see anybody else" The lioness replied as she got out of the car and they walked to the trunk.
Trey got a dufflebag with his clothes and blankets in it and slung the strap over his shoulder. He put a pannier he had made for Nala a few weeks ago on her and began loading the pouches with the food and other stuff they would need inside. He shut the trunk once they had it all and they walked to their cabin. The accommodations were simple, but that was to be expected. The cabin was basically a large cylinder with a roof, there was only a large main room with a few different 'sections' and a small bathroom. In the kitchen section there was a stove with only two burners and no oven, a sink with a single large basin, and a small refrigerator that hummed quietly. There was single full size bed with a nightstand next to it, and in the center of the room there was a large circular table with two chairs at it. On top of the table sat a deck of cards, a radio and a small 8x10 inch TV.
It was cold inside but they both thought it was nice to be out of the wind. Trey immediately turned the thermostat up and the radiator turned on, clicking as it began to warm up. He set his bag down on the bed and removed the pannier from Nala, setting it on the table. Nala began to stretch put her body, finally glad to be out of the car and able to move around a bit. Trey got some of the food he had brought in and the pan he had brought and began to make the both of them some dinner. For himself he had just brought some beef stew he had made earlier in the week and canned, he emptied it into a pot and began to warm it up. For Nala he had pre mixed her some food, he had started doing this in batches months ago so it didn't take as much time to prepare them. Tonight she was having chopped beef with gravy and a side of carrots, a favorite of hers. He finished cooking his food first and set it aside as he waited for Nala's to be done. As he finished heating hers up he emptied the contents of the pan into her feeding bowl and gave her some water in her water bowl, then began to eat his dinner without bothering to put the stew into a bowl.
"Can I go for a run outside?" Nala asked after she finished up her food, walking over to the door.
Trey got up and opened the door for her and she ran off into the dark. He quickly shut the door as she went out to keep the heat in. A few minutes later he heard scratching at the door and he got up to go open it for her, thinking it was strange that she was scratching so lightly. As he opened the door he was very surprised to find not Nala, but a small Cocker Spaniel that was shivering. It quickly ran inside past his legs, not waiting for an invitation. Trey poked his head out to make sure that Nala wasn't wanting to come back in yet before shutting the door to deal with the his uninvited guest. The dog was currently rubbing it's body against the radiator, he had to admit it was a cute little dog. The fur of the dog was a reddish brown, with a white section running down the front of her face and torso. The man walked over to the small dog and leaned down.
"Hey there, ya hungry?" Trey wondered aloud, holding his hand out for the dog.
"Yes" A woman's voice replied, seeming to have come from the dog.
Trey was very surprised at this, but not nearly as much as the first time he had heard an animal speak. He at least didn't fall over this time, instead his mouth just opened in awe at the dog who was now sniffing his hand. Suddenly he heard scratching at the door, louder this time so he was almost certain it was Nala. The dog began barking at the noise, and Trey picked her up and began to pet her to try and calm her down. He walked to the door with the now quiet dog in his arms.
"Nala, we've got a guest now. I'm holding her in my arms, so be ready to meet her." He slowly opened the door and saw the lioness peeking curiously through the crack. He took a step back and let the door open fully and Nala came in from the cold. The dog in his arms whimpered at seeing such a large beast, but calmed a little seeing that she was far more curious than hostile.
"You're going to be friendly with her, right?"
"Of course." Both of them replied simultaneously, Nala sounding excited and the dog sounding afraid. Trey set the dog down and closed the door, locking it as the two animals cautiously approached each other. They sniffed each other for a few moment, Nala eventually laying down when she was done.
"My name is Nala." The lioness said in a cool tone
"I-I'm Lady." replied the small spaniel sheepishly
As the two of them were introducing themselves Trey had gotten a bowl of the stew for Lady, still warm. He set it down and she immediately began to eat it. Nala felt jealous for a moment but immediately remembered that she had just eaten her own dinner. Trey also got the small dog some water, filling a pot with water and setting it next to her. He took a seat on the bed and Nala immediately jumped up and sat next to him, rubbing her had against him in the hoped of getting him to pet her. He smiled down as he felt her nuzzle him, he still wasn't used to how large she had gotten in the time they had been together. He pulled her close to his and pet her as he waited for Lady to finish her food. When she was done she walked over to the radiator and laid down where she had been before Nala had come back from her run.
"Sorry if this is a weird question but where exactly did you come from? There aren't any other campers here." Trey asked as he got up from the bed.
"I... I don't know." The spaniel turned her head towards the approaching man, who took a seat in one of the chairs after bringing it over to the heater. "Last night when I went to sleep I was in my bed at my owner's home in Paris. But when I woke up I found I was sleeping next to a river and the only thing around me was dense forests. I've been walking through the woods all day long looking for a person or a road or some way to get home. This campground was the first thing I found, and I only found it a few moments before I started scratching at your door."
"Huh." was all Trey responded with. He sat there for a moment taking in what she had said. "I've never met a talking dog before. All the ones I've met can only bark, can other dogs you know talk like you or are you special?"
She cocked her head "Dogs don't talk here but lions do?" She asked curiously. Nala stuck her tongue out at the dog.
"Err... No, Nala is special. She also appeared here one day unexpectedly and we've been looking for her home ever since." Trey shifted in his seat as he explained.
"Oh. Well to answer your question every dog and cat I know can talk. So can birds but they're very snobby and don't usually talk to me. People don't usually understand us though. That's new."
Trey thought for a moment. He hadn't ever considered that where Nala was from people might not understand her, but he was the first human she had ever seen so she had no way of knowing if they could. "Hmm. Well, I'm currently helping Nala try to get back home. If you want I can try to help you as well. You said you live in Paris, right? When we are done camping I can help you find exactly where in Paris you need to go and maybe come along with you."
Lady's tail began to wag "Oh, that would be so nice of you. I would love to see my owner again at some point. I'm sure she misses me dearly." Her tail slowed and a sad look appeared on her face as she remembered her owner.
"We're only planning on being here one night so tomorrow we'll head back. Right now we're on the west coast of America. Paris is almost on the entire other side of the planet, so it might take some time to get you where you need to go even after we find it." He got up from his seat when he was done explaining their plans to Lady. He looked at the clock and realized how late it was, 11:44. He turned the small television on, hoping he hadn't missed the forecast on the news. Only one channel came in on the TV and while the video had a slight amount of static it was not so much that it was unwatchable. The audio thankfully seemed to be unaffected and he turned it up so he could hear it clearly while he began to make the bed with the blankets and sheets he had brought along. When he was done he laid down in the bed and got comfortable under the covers. He held them up and Nala jumped up onto the bed as well, cuddling up close to him.
"Lady, would you like to sleep up here with us? There's plenty of room."
With little hesitation the cocker spaniel jumped onto the bed and curled up on his other side. She closed her eyes and fell asleep as the end of the news played. Trey was mildly disappointed that he had missed the forecast but he didn't mind that much, he would just have to make sure to check in the morning. After watching a few shows on the TV he used the remote to turn it off and got comfortable between the two animals, enjoying the warmth they radiated as he also drifted off to sleep.
(A/N That ended up being longer than I thought it would. I don't think I'm going to tag Lady and the Tramp because I would like it to be a surprise. Still don't know how to get Nala back home, any suggestions are welcome)
