Dipper was reading the journal in the bedroom he shared with his twin sister when suddenly, that same sister came bursting into the room!
"Hey bro bro! Look what Wendy gave me!" she exclaimed. Dipper looked up from the journal and saw his sister wearing a flannel jacket. This was a tad unfortunate because it didn't go too well with the rainbow sweater she was wearing. Dipper wasn't exactly much into fashion, but those designs clashed horribly.
"That was nice of her," then he realized something. He looked back at the page he had been reading and then back at the jacket Mabel was now wearing.
"Uh, not to sound nosy but did she mention where she got it?" he asked.
"From what I could understand, it was given to her when she was about my age, she said it didn't fit her anymore, but that I could have it now," said Mabel proudly. Dipper got up and looked the jacket up and down.
"Uh Dipper, you suddenly don't want this jacket yourself, do you? Oh wait! You want it because it has Wendy's scent on it!" inquired Mabel suddenly let out a mild squeamish glee.
"No, it's just something I was reading in the journal. Dipper showed her the page he was reading. It featured a drawing of a platypus-like creature with plaid skin. On top, there was a caption reading: "The Plaidypus." In a lower corner, there was a plaid jacket.
"You're not suggesting that someone used that adorable little creature to make this are you?" asked a horrified Mabel.
"Not necessarily, for one thing, I doubt it would be big enough to make a jacket that big. But it leaves me curious. Is Wendy still here?" he asked.
"She and Soos are downstairs," answered Mabel. Dipper rushed by her; Mabel felt herself compelled to follow him. Sure enough, there was Wendy and Soos standing at their normal posts in the shop.
"Hey Wendy!" Dipper called out. Wendy looked up from her phone.
"What's up, Dip-man?" she asked.
"Mabel showed me the jacket you gave her! She said it was given to you but do you have any idea where it might have come from?" he asked.
"You suddenly interested in fashion?" she asked.
"Not exactly," he then showed her the image of the Plaidypus that he had been reading about and showed how the flannel design on the jacket seemed to match pattern on the creature. Now Wendy understood, Soos looked at the image as well simply out of curiousity.
"Well, my dad gave that to me when I was twelve, and as you can tell, it doesn't fit me and none of my brothers were interested, then again, they've got their own flannel jackets and so that's why I gave it to Mabel. But I can't recall him saying how he got it," explained Wendy.
"Is there a chance he used some of those little guys to make this jacket?" asked Mabel sadly.
"Well, I wouldn't hold it past my dad to go hunting. It says here that these little guys smell like bacon and maple syrup though and I don't think my jacket smells like that," answered Wendy.
"Bacon and maple syrup? Those are two of the greatest things in the world!" exclaimed Soos excitedly. Dipper grinned mischievously.
The next scene featured the four friends walking in the wilderness with Soos sniffing around like he was some kind of bloodhound.
"There's a part of me that doesn't feel right using Soos like a tracking dog," whispered Mabel.
"Hey we promised him real bacon so it's a fair trade," Dipper answered back. They were climbing up a mountainside when they decided to take a break. Wendy pulled out a bag of shelled peanuts she had and while she poured some onto her hand, one of them fell to the ground. They heard rustling in some nearby bushes and held perfectly still.
"Dudes, I think I smell breakfast," whispered Soos. Suddenly, a rather curious creature came out and went right for the stray peanut. It paid no attention to the humans but they could clearly see that it was the creature they had been hoping to find.
"This is how the author came across it, they stumbled to it on accident because dropped food got the thing's attention," whispered Dipper. Mabel took an immediate picture of the little guy as he ate the peanut. The creature finally looked at the humans, briefly acknowledging them, before finally waddling away.
"Well, at least we got to see what we came for," said Wendy.
"But we don't know for sure if this jacket is made from those things!" pointed out Mabel.
"Mabel, even if it is, the journal says that it is impeccably warm and impervious to mosquito bites, so you got that going for it," pointed out Dipper, who had brought the journal along just in case it was needed. Mabel nodded sheepishly.
The four friends decided to head to the diner to get Soos the bacon they promised him when they came across Manly Dan.
"Hey Wendy, you and your friends been hanging out?" he asked.
"Yeah, we were just out hiking," she answered. Then Manly Dan recognized the jacket Mabel was still wearing.
"Say, didn't I give that jacket to my daughter a few years ago?" he asked.
"You did Dad, but it doesn't fit me anymore so Mabel is going to have custody of it. Hey if you don't mind us asking, do you remember where you got it?" asked Wendy.
"Oh sure, I bought that at the local leather shop, the dude who sold it to me said it would keep the wearer safe from mosquito bites. Stranger yet, there was an image of a duck-like creature next to the display," he answered. Now the friends had an answer. Mabel took off the sweater and draped it over her shoulder.
"Do you no longer want it?" asked Wendy.
"Actually, it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. I just realized how warm it is over my sweater."
