Chapter 12 - The Blinding Light of Battle
Mari lets out a stifled scream as blood begins to run down her face, throwing the last attempt at a punch she strikes the one-eyed man in the open eye wound. He lets out a pained yell and snatches her arm snapping the wrist like a twig. Pulling his arm back, he prepares to smash the young girls' head against the nearly destroyed stone wall. He swings with an immense force and as Mari's head is mear inches away from the walls cracked corner a crackle of purple electricity sparks past the large one-eyed man.
Moments pass as if reality is catching for the one-eyed man, a terrifying pained shriek bursts out from the man as the arm he held Mari in bursts open in a torrent of blood. A fully geared Hana slides over a dozen meters holding the burnt and bloodied Mari in her arms, as her momentum carries her over onto her back. "Hana is that you, thanks, "Mari mutters as she passes out.
Hana's attention turns from her teammate to the man as his scream turns into a hate-filled roar. She sets Mari down and looks up at the man, her eyes glow a slight purple as she does. "DIE, DIE DIEEEE" the man thunders raising his remaining arm as if aiming.
Mari rushes forward so any attack won't hit the unconscious Mari. Hana quickly dodges past several point-blank eruptions of fire to get up to him with her tanto. She quickly slashes at his left thigh and then his back with the electrified weapon. With a crackle of electricity, she appears next to Mari again before charging the man. Leaping into the air she goes to strike right at his heart, as she is lunging for the attack midair she notices the man's eye flash. An explosion goes off sending Hana back several meters as well as burning the large man. Hana lands onto the ground and rolls putting out the rest of the fire.
The man falls to his knees as his legs buckle from the fights with Mari and Hana, he clutches his eye blood seeping through his figures. Hana smiles and smugly proclaims "Looks like I win, you overused that dojutsu" as she says this she begins to stand, just as she gets to her feet a searing pain fills her body causing her to drop back to a knee. "Damn that blast did way more than I thought, how could I be so careless" Hana berates herself.
A sinister growl emits from the large man as he forces himself to his feet "Kill...Murder...Die, Die" he viciously mutters. His eye flashes with insidious flame as he stares at Hana "no, no not die you BURN" he roars.
"Your right about that big guy" a voice declares from behind him quickly followed by a glowing white and orange fist bursting through the man's chest as he ignites in flames. The hand and arm are quickly pulled from the man's chest as he incoherently screams his in last death throws. Kasai quickly walks dead man engulfed in fire and helps Hana onto her feet "you hurt?" he asks with genuine worry.
Hana shakes her head "No, but is in a pretty bad way lets get out of her and find a medic for her quick" Kasai nods and runs over and puts Mari over his shoulders. The two quickly make their way towards the exit of the compound. As they make their way through the newly deserted compound they reach a tall stairway with a door atop that is slightly ajar letting natural light down the otherwise dim stairs. The two rush up the dark stone staircase and make it around two-thirds the way when they begin to smell sulfur, sweat, and iron, the smells battle lay top just outside the door.
Almost as soon as the smells hit their nose they stop, almost mentally preparing for what lay ahead as they seeming know it won't be easy. "How are you on chakra?" Kasai asks as he readjusts Mari on his shoulder.
"I'm fine, I don't know why I but I seem stronger like they did something to my chakra" Hana proclaims rolling her shoulder "what about you?"
"Ye I'm the same, I think my chakra pool tripled or something, though you moved really fast like about as fast as you moved with my help when fighting Anko" Kasai replied as if asking a question.
"I don't know but I think they were trying to make new dojutsu, maybe they started with me but had to actually make your chakra supply somewhat average to try it with you" Hana retorts with a mix of childish fun and genuine querying.
"I don't think I can blow things up by looking at them yet." Kasai jokingly responds "Well, either way, any weird powerups can only be a blessing right?"
"S-sure let's go with that for now," Hana says as she beings to bound up the stairs followed by Kasai.
As they reach the door, they are almost blown back as it swings open as a fireball goes off just outside rocking the stairway. "You ok?" Kasai asks looking back at Hana who stumbled down a couple of steps.
"Yes I am fine, now let's get outta here before we are sent all the way back down" she snaps back at the white-haired boy.
Kasai nods as the two genin run through the doorway and are hit by direct sunlight right above them. Moments pass as they look around and see they are top a cliff as a battle of hundreds of shinobi is bellow them in a now ashen valley. As the two look around they see battles taken place on the opposite side of the valley with explosions rocking the opposite cliff face. As they turn back to the dark stone door clearly exposed in an explosion they see several bodies as their exit seemed to bring a small pause to the en battled sides on this cliff face.
Two samurai clad in black armor seem to recognize the gennin and charge them. Hana's eyes once again faintly glow purple as she rushes one of the samurai. Hana clashes blades with the samurai, however as he uses his strength advantage to force Hana onto the back foot she slides in between his legs and stabs into his back. The samurai spins around to slash at Hana but she leaps over the blade and brings the tanto down into his eye killing him outright.
The other samurai meanwhile charges towards the encumbered Kasai who readies a kunai to defend himself. However, before Kasai is attacked a beige blur rushes past him and charges the samurai. The samurai reacts to the blur and brings his katana down to slash at it. The blade is caught in between the palms of a young woman quickly revealed to be Hanabi Hyuga. She tenses up and twists shattering the katana, following the motion she spins around and strikes the samurai with an open palm to the chest. A mear moment later the samurai falls dead having his heart crushed by the young Hyuga's blow.
With this display, both sides once again clash in combat. Hanabi turns to face Kasai, she rolls her shoulder clearly getting used to using it again."You three are Anko-sensei's squad right, she will be glad to know your alive" She shouts at Kasai over the sounds of battle.
"Our friend is hurt where is the closest medic-nin" Kasai shouts in a worried tone.
Hana quickly runs back to the two "We need to hurry to get her help and get back here" she proclaims definitively.
"Just follow me and be quick as you can ok," Hanabi shouts as she rushes off. The other two exchange a determined glance as they rush off after the chunin. Only a couple minutes go by as they follow the tails back to a battlefield camp.
Hanabi rushes into the camp and goes to the medic jonin running it. "We have a wounded genin in urgent need of help, and if you can get Anko and tell her I found her squad" Kasai and Hana quickly follow, and Kasai hands Mari to a group of medics with a stretcher for the girl.
Hana turns to Hanabi "will she be okay?" she quietly asks.
Hanabi turns and smiles "some of these medics healed me up good as new just a couple weeks ago and I was a complete mess. She will be fine trust me" with this reassuring information a weight seems to be lifted from Hana and Kasai who was listening in. "Right, let's get back to the fight, for now, we are a three-man squad and I am the leader" The two genin give reassured nods as the three charges off back to the battle together.
