I woke up and gasped. I thought I was still dreaming when I found myself in some sort of cold and dark cave. All I could find were dark rocks and a giant water hole in the middle. I was able to see them because the only lights in the cave was about a dozen or more candles that were lit.
As I wondered how I got here, I tried to remember what happened after that lobster monster dragged me and Chel down into the ocean. All I could remember was trying to break free from the monster, but he was too strong and I was starting to lose too much air. Then I went fully unconscious. And now I was awake and, to my confusion, I found myself in a cave. I was starting to think this was the lobster's cave and he put me and Chel in here for his snacks. But as I looked around, I couldn't find Chel at all. I started to wonder what if the lobster monster ate her already, though I hoped not.
I tried to get up, but I just fell over. I tried again and failed again. I knew it wasn't chains that were holding me down. I tried to wiggle, but it felt that I was wriggling only one leg. I turned around and was shocked at what I saw. I saw I had a blue mermaid tail instead of two legs. I would have sworn that I was dreaming but the pain I felt from falling down was real and I knew I had a mermaid tail for real. Then I noticed I was wearing nothing but my strapless white bikini top. But how did all of this happen?
Then I heard something shooting up from the water. I turned around and saw a head in the water hole. "Chel?
"Anna!" Chel cried happily. "I'm so glad you're alive."
Then she put a wooden crate on the rocky surface and then she climbed out of the water hole. I was amazed surprised that she had a mermaid tail herself. It was a pink one and she was wearing her tank top.
"You're a mermaid as well?" I was starting to get more confused and worried. "Where are we, Chel? What is this cave? How are we mermaids?"
Chel used her arms to approach me and then she held my hands, calming me down. "Calm down, Anna," she said to me. "Take a deep breath with me."
We both took a deep breath together.
"Now, Anna," Chel said. "This is what happened."
She started with after we were dragged down underwater. When I started to go unconscious, Chel noticed the potion bottle hidden under my shirt was being shaken out due to the lobster monster's rough shaking. When it finally escaped from me, she managed to grab it with her hands despite the heavy chains around them. Then she used her hands to open the bottle and took a mouthful. Then she felt tremendous pain as her eyes managed to see underwater and her legs became a mermaid tail. Her leg chains were off, so she used her tail to free herself and me from the lobster monster. She took me behind a rock and poured the last remains of the bottle into my mouth while I was still unconscious. I'm glad I was unconscious when I became a mermaid, so I didn't know what the taste and pain felt like. Then she found an abandoned hammer next to a rock and she used both of them to break the chains around her hands and mine.
But we didn't lose the monster yet. He spotted us hiding from the rocks and began to chase again. As Chel swam and carried me, she looked for some places to lose the monster. She found some darkness below her as if it would take us into the deepest part of the ocean. So Chel took us down and hid under a ledge near the absolute darkest part. It was dark and big enough for us to hide while Chel made sure the lobster passed us and descended further down. We waited for a while to check that we had really lost him for good. After waiting for about half an hour and he didn't show any signs of coming back, Chel decided that we had lost him for good. She assumed that he got eaten by the creatures in the deep sea if any existed.
Then Chel carried me again as we ascended to light in the sea and looked to find shelter. She found an underwater cave so she decided to check it out. After she discovered it had an air pocket, she decided that this place would be all right for us. Then she left me and went back in the ocean to see if there was anything for us to eat and drink. All she could find was a wooden crate floating the sea. She checked what was in it before she dragged it down and brought it here.
"And then I find you waking up to discover you're now a mermaid and that's it," Chel finished.
"Well, thank you for saving our lives and getting rid of that lobster," I said. Then I remembered the other monsters attacking our families and friends. "Chel, while you were on the surface, did you find the ship the rest of our families and friends were on?"
"I'm afraid not, Anna," she replied. "But I didn't see any sunken ships either, so hopefully they're still alive and still sailing to safety."
"Yeah, hopefully," I sobbed, before breaking into tears.
Chel wrapped her arms around me. "I know it's all a shock turning into a mermaid and swimming away from the lobster monster and losing our families and our friends, but we'll find them, and win this war. You'll be with your children very soon."
I did miss my children, but that wasn't why I was crying. I was worried that, even if we won this war and saved the world and everything goes back to normal, they would never want to see me again. I knew I was a bad mother and if they didn't want to see me again, I wouldn't force them to. I just wanted them to be happy and be the best of themselves. I feel like Chel helped them with that in their short time with her and her family than their whole lives with me.
When I told Chel all that, she just lifted my head up, looked me into my tearing eyes and held my wet cheeks. "Anna, listen to me. You are a really wonderful mother and your kids couldn't have had a better one. I understand how you are feeling because I feel like you're feeling like now. I'm always worried if Benito likes me and if I'm doing all I can for him."
I stopped crying and smiled at her. "I think you have done a great job with Benito. So has Tulio and his 'Uncle' Miguel."
Chel chuckled. "Yeah. Though he is not technically family, Miguel is the closest thing Tulio and I have to a brother and Benito has to an uncle and he's been great."
"And Benito is great. All of my kids seem to really adore him."
"Thank you, Anna."
Then we hugged each other. Then both of our tummies rumbled.
"Let's see what's in the crate, shall we?" Chel asked.
We used our hands to head to the crate. Chel lifted it off and we all looked in. It was full of yummy food like apples, pears, grapes, bananas, bread, cheese and even chocolate. Chel and I both agreed to be careful of what we eat because none of us would know when the next time would be when we would find any food at all. So we each had an apple.
"Oh, Anna, I've just remembered," Chel said. "There is something else I found while I was swimming for supplies." She showed me a bottle the same shape of the one that carried the magic liquid that turned us into mermaids. This one had white liquid in it.
"Do you think that the gods that Tzekel-Kan serves made this liquid?" I asked.
"I'm not sure, but I believe so," Chel said. "And I believe that there are more of these to find. And I believe the more we find of these, the more we will find our friends, save Miguel from these gods and win this war."
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!" I dived into the water and Chel followed me. I forgot I had just been turned into a mermaid, but I felt that I starting to get the hang of swimming like one. Before this, the only thing I knew about mermaids was all the books I read about them in the Arendelle Castle library and my friend Queen Ariel who was a former mermaid before she became a human being. She always told me that she liked being a human being more than a mermaid, but being a mermaid did have benefits. And I was starting to learn those benefits like breathing and seeing underwater and exploring many things that very few human beings, such as Ariel, knew ever existed.
