- Den Moother
It is a rather foggy day in PontyPandy. A thick fog hangs over the town making the townhouses stand out like gray jagged teeth. A shape wearing a dark green cloak stuck to the street lamps. The only sounds around them were the sounds of their tiny talons tapping the concrete. They paused near a fence. They leaned their head up against the wood.
On the other side of the fence, they could hear something shuffle around on the other side. The figure turned their head to peer through the cracks in the fence. A white furred shape was moving around in the fog. The shape paused near the figure looking at them. "Doggy." they chirp quietly.
The dog wagged it's tail happily. The figure steadily poked the tip of it's wing feather in through the crack in the fence. The dog smelled it. It licked it gently. "Cute. Good boy." chirped the figure again.
The figure moved it's wing away from the fence. "Good boy want out?" it asked.
The dog wagged it's tail again in response. It's ears perked as the figure opened the gate. The dog quickly darted out onto the sidewalk. The figure gave the dog a gentle pat. "C'mon good boy."
The dog followed the figure down the sidewalk. The both of them vanished off into the fog.
"Radar!"
"Radar!"
"C'mere boy!"
Sam sighed. He woke up a few hours later to find his trusty canine companion gone from his backyard. It wasn't like Radar to take off on his own. Sam set the bowl of food he had for Radar down on his back porch. "Hmm. I hope he didn't hop the fence."
Sam went over to his fence. He bent down to inspect to see if maybe there was a hole that Radar had escaped through. The soil at the base of his fence appeared to be secure. He let out a sigh as he stood up. "Where could he of gone?"
Sam heard the gate to his yard creak suddenly. A dusky brown haired woman poked her head through it. "Were you opening your yard to visitors today, Sam?" she asked.
Sam shook his head. "No Chloe, I wasn't but that does answer a question I had this morning."
The woman looked around. She noticed that Radar was missing from Sam's side. "Did Radar suddenly learn how to make himself invisible?"
Sam chuckled. "Uh no. I wished that was the case. Radar appears to have decided that he wanted to walk himself this morning."
Chloe gasped. "Oh no. I hope he's okay. It's not like him to run off by himself."
"Well that's why I want to find him. With as foggy as it is, a driver passing by may not be able to see him." explained Sam.
"We could always have my Uncle help us." suggested Chloe.
"Good idea."
Malcolm Williams was Mandy and Chloe's Uncle. He recently moved to PontyPandy when he got tired of the city life. He works as PontyPandy's own police officer. Malcolm was out and about on patrol. He smiled seeing his niece and Sam approached. "Hello you two." he said warmly.
"Hey Malcolm." greeted Chloe.
"What's up with Sam? Why does he look like he's lost a best friend?"
"That's the thing. He kind of...did. Radar has gone missing. The only clue we have is an opened gate."
Malcolm frowned. "that sounds like somebody broke in. Did you hear anything unusual in your yard this morning, Sam?"
Sam shook his head. "Nope. Just silence."
"Hmm. Alright I'll help you two look."
"Thanks Uncle Malcolm."
Malcolm smiled. He then grew serious. "Let's check Sam's yard again. Just in case our dog-napper left any clues."
Sam took the two of them back to his garden. Chloe hung back with Sam whilst her Uncle had a look around the yard. Chloe noticed that Sam was growing anxious. She placed a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure he's okay. He's a smart dog."
"I can't help it. Radar is my son. I can't stand the thought of him getting lost or scared. If somebody really did take him this morning, then he could be hurt."
Chloe giggled. "Now you know how Bronwyn feels when the twins get into trouble."
Sam blushed. He quickly averted his gaze away from Chloe. Chloe rested her hands around his elbow. "Not like there's anything wrong with that."
Malcolm walked over to the two of them. "I think I may have a slight clue as to who our dog-napper might be."
Malcolm held up a small black feather. "I found this in between one of the wooden panels on the fence."
Chloe glanced at the feather. "That feather looks like Sophie's. Wasn't she supposed to be at home with you, Uncle Malcolm?"
Malcolm paled for a moment. He groaned. "Yes she was. I went on patrol this morning to look for her but got side tracked with this case."
"Then if she's the one that took Radar, she could be in trouble too." added Sam. "Let's head to the station and get a rescue party together."
Meanwhile,
Sophie and Radar were walking along the Newtown road. Radar trotted happily by her side. Sophie had her earphones on. Loud music was blasting through them. "Why can't we just laugh and joke around? Remember cuddles in the kitchen, yeah, to get things off the ground." sang Sophie loudly.
Radar tossed his head back and howled a bit to her singing. The howl was enough to catch the attention of a rather sneaky individual. Norman looked up over the stone fence to see Sophie and Radar walking past them. His beady little gaze fell upon the shiny set of earphones that Sophie had on her head. He smirked quietly to himself. Those headphones look rather cool. Since mine are broken, I'm sure Sophie wouldn't miss hers. He thought.
Norman crouched down on the other side of the fence. He silently followed after them. Sophie paused at the top of the hill. She leaned against the fence to rest for a moment. Norman slowly rose up behind her. He put his hands on Sophie's head which caused the young Kenku to let out a shrill chirp in confusion. Radar barked loudly at Norman as he yanked the headset off Sophie's head.
"No! Bad!" chanted Sophie as she turned around. She reached with her tiny wings to get her headphones away from Norman. "Give back!" she ordered.
Norman chuckled. "I'm afraid not, bird brain! Good luck trying to catch me!"
Norman bolted towards the woods behind the fence. Sophie let out an angry screech. She chased after him with Radar hot on her heels. Norman kept about a mile of space between them. He grinned. There's no way she'll be able to catch me. Not with those stubby legs of hers.
"Bad! Give back!" shouted Sophie again.
Norman paused. He held up her headphones. "Are you looking for these?!"
Sophie nodded angrily. "Give!"
Norman kept them out of her reach. "then try and catch me." Norman took off running again.
Sophie sprinted after him. Norman kept going until he got to the edge of a rather massive ravine. He stopped suddenly only for Sophie to ram into him. The both of them began falling. Sophie let out a terrified scream. The both of them ended up landing on a ledge with Sophie's headphones clattering to the ground and breaking. Norman groaned quietly. He shoved Sophie off him. He cradled his arm. Ouch. I think this dumb crow broke my arm.
He dared himself to look up. He paled when he realized how far down the two of them were. "I have to get out of here but I can't if my arm is broken." He then glared at Sophie who hadn't moved yet. "This is all your fault!"
Sophie weakly tried to sit up. She winced holding her side. Tears built up in her eyes. She didn't make eye contact with Norman.
The both of them suddenly heard barking. Norman looked up to see Radar trying to find a way down. The poor dog danced from side to side. He barked at them again. "Go find help, Radar!" shouted Norman.
Radar whined. He then bolted away from the ravine leaving the two of them alone. Sophie kept a firm hold on her side. She tried her best to move away from Norman despite wanting to really peck this crazy teen to death.
Norman glared at her. "I don't know why you have that look on your face. This is your fault you know. You should of watched where you were going."
Sophie was really too sore to shout at him. She only teared up in response. Her side was killing her.
Radar bolted down the side of Newtown Road. A pair of headlights shined in the fog. Radar paused for a moment. He watched the shape barrel towards him. Helen frowned seeing Radar standing by himself. "Radar?" she braked and pulled off onto the shoulder.
Radar ran around to the driver's side. He whined at her. He tugged at her pant leg. "Easy boy. It's alright. Your safe. Where's Sophie?"
Radar bounded a little further up the road. He barked at her over his shoulder. Helen hopped out of her ambulance. "Go on, Radar. Show me where she is."
Radar took off running ahead of her. Helen followed after him on foot. She wanted to see where Radar was taking her first before letting Sam know that she had found Radar.
Radar lead Helen into the woods. He paused near the edge of the ravine. He whined at her. Helen carefully made her way to the ledge. She looked down. She gasped seeing Sophie and Norman on a lead by themselves. "Norman! Sophie! Are you okay?!"
"Uh, no Helen. I think I've broken my arm. Can't say the same for Sophie!" shouted Norman.
"Hurt." was all Sophie could muster through her pain.
"Stay calm. I'm going to call for back-up."
The alarms inside of the fire station blared. Sam perked up hearing it. Norman and Sophie have fallen into a ravine. Helen is waiting for them with Radar. Came Station Officer Steele's voice through the PDA.
Sam turned to Chloe. "They could be hurt. You'd better come with."
Chloe nodded. "Right behind you, Sam."
Sam ran inside to get changed. Penny and Ellie joined him downstairs. The three of them changed into their firefighting uniforms. Sam took the abseiling equipment out of one of the lockers. Ellie looked at him. "Why are you taking that, Sam?"
"It's far too dangerous to have Tom try to lift them out in the fog. So we'll have to do it using Venus' winch. Ellie, I want you to go with Penny in Venus while Chloe and I take Mercury." He handed off the equipment to Ellie.
Ellie nodded. "Rodger that, Sam!"
Sam ran over to Mercury. He felt Chloe hop on behind him. A slow blush formed on his face. He handed her a helmet without looking at her. "You may want to wear this."
"Thank you, Sam."
Chloe clipped on the helmet that Sam had given her. She squealed out in glee as Sam pulled out of the Fire Station. He took off head of Venus. Chloe buried her face in his backside. She could smell his warm scent. Sam found himself blushing even more. Oh god. What have I gotten myself into? He groaned inwardly.
A girl can get used to this. May have to tag along more often. Mused Chloe in her head.
The convoy soon arrived at the forest. Sam walked over to the edge. He peered down it. "Don't worry you two! We'll soon have you out!"
He turned to Penny and Ellie. "Ready?" he asked.
"Ready Sam."
Penny helped Sam set up the equipment. Chloe got her medical kit ready in case her Aunt needed help. She watched as her Aunt got a gurney ready.
Sam soon reached the ledge the two of them were stuck on. Sophie whimpered. She tried to move away from Sam. She let out a squeak when her wing reached past the ledge. She started to topple backwards. Chloe and Helen both gasped. Sam reached for her. He gently grabbed her shoulder. "Don't move. It's okay. Your safe."
Sophie looked up at him. "Scared." she chanted.
"Don't be. It's going to be okay." he soothed. "Just let me help you."
Sophie trembled under his touch. She avoided eye contact with him. She didn't know this man. She made her body as stiff as possible making it hard for Sam to safely pull her away. "No. Bad."
Sam frowned. He had to get Sophie away from the ledge. He looked up at Helen. "She's really spooked! Any ideas?!"
"Her music! She should have her headphones on her!" shouted Helen.
Norman paled. "About that, Sam. I took them from Sophie because mine were broken. They kind of broke when the both of them fell down here."
Sam let out a sigh of annoyance. "Norman, you know better than to take things that don't belong to you. Now I've got to figure out another way of getting Sophie to let me help her."
Norman looked down shamefully.
Radar began barking at Sam. Sam smiled. "I've got an idea. Penny, see if you can't get Radar into the harness. I think I know how he can help on this rescue."
Penny tilted her head to the side. "Uh..okay."
Sam sent the harness back up to them. Penny put it around Radar. She made sure it was nice and tight before lowering him down onto the ledge. Sam helped Radar out of the harness once his paws touched the ledge. "Okay boy. I need you to keep Sophie nice and calm, okay?"
Radar let out a yap. Sam gave him a small pat on the head. Radar crawled over to where Sophie was. Sophie sniffed. "Good boy."
Radar laid right by Sophie's side. She rested a wing on him. "Good boy." she chanted.
Sam felt her relax. Sophie let Sam pull her away from the ledge. He helped her into the gurney. She winced and cried out as she laid down. Radar whined worriedly. He laid by her side. Sam attached the hook to the gurney. "Okay Penny, steady as she goes. Be careful."
Sophie felt the gurney begin to move. She held onto Radar tightly. Radar licked her face comfortingly. Penny helped Sophie off of the gurney once they were up at the top. Helen lifted Sophie into her arms. "Come here sweetie. Let's get your side looked at."
Sophie wrapped her small wings around her Aunt's neck. She buried her face in it. "Scared."
Helen rubbed her back gently. She checked Sophie's side to discover that she had two broken ribs. Sophie leaned against her Aunt's side. She watched as her Cousin Chloe treated Norman. A soft growl tumbled out of her beak. Chloe had done Norman's up in a cast. "Well that's one thing dealt with. Don't think that my Uncle isn't going to have a field day with you though, Norman Price." she smirked.
Norman groaned. "I'd much rather Fireman Sam be the one to give me the lecture this time."
Sam chuckled. "No. I think I'm done trying to lecture you especially at your age, Norman."
Norman looked down.
Malcolm met up with the group at Helen's house. To say he was mad was an understatement. "I should of known you would be causing trouble at some point today, Norman."
Norman kept silent as Malcolm continued his rant. "Stealing people's property and then leading them into danger is a very selfish thing to do! Sophie could have been killed or worse!"
"I know and I'm sorry...I only wanted her headphones…"
"Then you should of asked to borrow them!" bellowed Malcolm. "I'm just glad Sophie is okay despite having broken ribs."
He then looked at Sophie. He let his gaze soften. He went over and held her close. "And Sophie, don't go running off, okay?"
"Okay." churred Sophie leaning into her dad's touch.
"And next time, tell Sam that you want to walk Radar. He was very worried about him."
He felt Sophie nod. Malcolm rubbed her shoulder. "Thank you for rescuing Sophie, Sam. At least we knew Radar was with Sophie the entire time."
Sam gave Radar a small pat. "It's no problem, Malcolm. You do have to thank Radar as well though."
Chloe came out with a nice big steak for Radar. "Will this do?"
Radar licked his chops. He quickly pulled himself away from Sam's grip. He sat his butt down right in front of Chloe who chuckled. "I'll take that as a yes."
"Good boy." chanted Sophie again, earning her a laugh from everyone in the room.
The End
