Chapter 8: Shadowsong

Shadowsong sat beside her best friend's body. Her fur was full of herbs juices to remove the stench of death. Sootstrike sat on the opposite side of Fernfall, his head bowed in sadness. Shadowsong sighed heavily with grief. She wished that Fernfall wasn't dead. She wished that she wasn't being accused of murder, and she wished that Sootstrike was nicer to her. But wishing won't help anything. I need to take action. Shadowsong thought. I need to find out who murdered Leopardflower, and then kill them. They deserve to die. And they will. I promise myself that I will get revenge.

Sootstrike's PoV:

Long after everyone had left the silent vigil, Sootstrike still stayed by his sister.

"I'm sorry." He whispered. "I didn't have a choice. I didn't mean to be recruited by the boss."

"Then why did you keep following him?" A voice asked. Sootstrike jumped and whipped around. He saw Fernfall staring at him with cold eyes.

"F-Fernfall?" Sootstrike stuttered. "What are you doing here?"

But then she noticed the stars in her pelt.

"Oh." He meowed, feeling disappointed. "You're dead."

"If only you were." Fernfall snorted. "You've helped to kill countless lives and you don't give a damn."

"That's not true." Sootstrike whispered. "You don't know how torn apart I feel. I don't want to help kill cats, but I have to or I will be killed."

"That would be an improvement." Fernfall meowed coldly. Sootstrike flinched.

"Please leave me alone." He meowed. Fernfall rolled her eyes and then disappeared. Sootstrike let out a long sigh. He wished that Fernfall would not be so disappointed in him.

"Sootstrike." A voice barked. Sootstrike groaned and turned around.

"Fernfall-" Sootstrike started but then he saw who it was and gasped. "O-oh. Hello, boss. What can I do for you?"

"Come to my den." The cat growled. "Now."

Sootstrike nodded.

Sootstrike arrived at the den of his boss and stepped inside. His boss was curled up in the nest that was at the back of the den.

"Come in." The cat growled. Sootstrike stepped in. The cat padded toward him, claws unsheathed. "You failed me." The cat meowed coldly. "You were supposed to kill her."

"I-I'm sorry, boss." Sootstrike stuttered. "It's just that, Fernfall died and I got distracted."

"You'll pay." The cat hissed.

"Please!" Sootstrike pleaded. "Give me another chance!"

"You got your chance." The cat growled and leapt at Sootstrike. His boss pinned him down, one paw on his throat, the other raised to give the killing blow.

"No…" Sootstrike meowed weakly.

"Time to die, Sootstrike." The cat growled and brought down its paw.
