Chapter 9: Echowing

Echowing padded outside of his leaders den, shock rippling through his body. He hadn't expected Sagestar to make him DEPUTY. Echowing stared at the cats padding around the camp, going about their daily duties. There was a chance that Echowing might someday lead these cats. Was he really ready for that? Was he ready for any leadership responsibilities? Echowing didn't think so.

"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join beneath the high ledge for a clan meeting!" Sagestar yowled. Echowing padded to the center of the clearing and sat by Rainstorm. The she-cat looked tense and unhappy.

"Are you alright?" Echowing asked her in a whisper.

Rainstorm ignored him. "I wonder what the meeting is about." She thought out loud.

Echowing sighed and decided not to talk to the she-cat. She obviously wasn't happy that he wasn't a prisoner in his own clan anymore.

But we were such good friends, Echowing thought sadly. I wonder what came in between us.

Echowing just shrugged and looked back at Sagestar, who was patiently waiting for the cats in the clearing to quiet down.

"As you all know," Sagestar meowed with a sorrowful and shaky voice. "Many of our warriors have died in this fateful battle. I now realize that I should have listened to Echowing, who was contradicting me for the safety of the clan. I apologize greatly to all of you. Graymist has agreed to step down from his position as deputy, and I have chose someone else. Someone who has worked hard for the safety and well being of the clan. I say these words before StarClan that they may hear and approve of my choice. The new deputy is Echowing."

Echowing looked over at Rainstorm and saw that she had a look of shock on her face. Echowing guessed that she thought that she would be becoming the new deputy of ThunderClan.

Uh oh… Echowing thought. Now she'll hate me even more, now that I've become deputy of ThunderClan.

"Echowing! Echowing! Echowing!" The clan cheered. Echowing noticed that a few cats weren't cheering, but instead they were glaring at Echowing with looks of pure hatred.

Echowing ducked his head in embarrassment as the clan chanted his name. He saw Graymist smiling at him, but his son, Redpaw, was amongst the cats glaring at Echowing.

Echowing stood up and padded over to Sagestar.

"Echowing," Sagestar started. "Do you accept the position of deputy?"

Echowing dipped his head to his leader. "I do." He meowed.

"Then by the powers of StarClan, you are now deputy of ThunderClan. Effective immediately." Sagestar meowed.

The cheering of the clan started up again and drowned out the loud buzzing noise coming from above. Echowing was oblivious to the coming danger. But then the cats silenced as they heard the ominous buzzing noise that was becoming louder and louder.

"GET DOWN!" Someone yowled. Echowing saw Sagestar flee into his rock cave, leaving the rest of the clan outside. Then there was a flash of orange light and then darkness.

Let me know in the reviews what you think the buzzing noise was. Hint: It has something to do with twolegs. Anyways, have a good day (or night) and stay safe! (The allegiances are now posted to my profile)
