Chapter 6

It was nearly the end of term when Miss Cackle said, "We have a spelling bee with the students of Pentangle's Academy." Mildred looked over at Hecate and saw a shocked look but also a disappointed look on her face. Mildred knew about Hecate and Pippa Pentangle as best friends when they were in school until they drifted apart later. Hecate talked about everything to Mildred, and she did the same. When Miss Pentangle came to the school, you could spot her in the crowd of her students. She was the only one wearing pink.

The spelling bee was underway, with Pentangles leading by three while Cackle's only had two. Mildred was having trouble but always went to Hecate for help, even with the spelling bee this term. One afternoon Miss Pentangle came upon Mildred while she was studying and started talking.

She offered a scholarship hoping she would take it. But she was surprised when Mildred said, "No, thank you, Miss Pentangle. I'm happy being here." Mildred then got up and left, when she bumped into Hecate, she hugged her then told her about Miss Pentangle's offer, she told Hecate that she declined it.

While Mildred and Hecate talked, they didn't realize Miss Pentangle was watching them. She saw them talking but didn't know why they seemed closer than teachers and students normally are, then was surprised when Hecate kissed Mildred and that Mildred kissed her back.

She thought that there was a possibility that they're soulmates, but wasn't completely sure so, she smiled and left them alone. The spelling bee had finally ended with Cackle's Academy winning because of Mildred's spell. Mildred didn't like the sad and depressing look Hecate had every time she saw her old friend and knew she had to get Hecate and Miss Pentangle talking, so she set up a plan to get them both to Miss Cackle's office.

She told Hecate that Ada wanted to see her in her office. She then told Miss Pentangle the same thing. Miss pentangle arrives first to find that Miss Cackle wasn't there, so she waited. A few moments later, the door opened, and Hecate entered holding Mildred's hand.

They stopped and stared at each other when they realized they had been set up by Mildred, who was trying to sneak back out the door. Hecate gave Mildred a thankful smile and understood why she did this. Mildred returned her smile and gently closed the door behind her to give them privacy to work through their lost friendship.

They finally worked everything out and hugged each other. Hecate heard the door open and looked over. She saw Mildred by the door nodded her head to get her to come forward. She properly introduced Mildred to Pippa and said, "Pippa, I want you to meet my soulmate, Mildred." Pippa was shocked but smiled because she had a feeling they might have been. Pippa was happy that her best friend was finally happy.

Cackle's students all went outside and waved off Miss Pentangle and her students. Hecate put her arm around Mildred's waist while Mildred and the other students waved to them as they were leaving. That night Hecate thanked Mildred for helping her and Pippa become friends again, she gave her a long kiss, and both said, "Good night." To each other and left to go to their rooms to sleep, Mildred cuddled up to her cat Tabby and fell asleep with a smile on her face while thinking of Hecate.

The term had finally finished, and all the students were saying, "Goodbye." To all their friends and the teachers, the only one not looking forward to going was Mildred, but she knew that it wouldn't be long because Hecate told her she would see her over the holidays. Mildred packed all her stuff, but before she left on her broomstick, she looked back to her teacher, hugged everyone until she got to Hecate. She just kissed her and hugged her, then got on her broomstick and left with tears in her eyes.

When Mildred got home, her mother was waiting for her. As soon as she saw the tears in Mildred's eye, she just hugged her daughter as she cried. Mildred told her that she didn't want to leave Hecate and just wanted to stay at Cackles with her. Mildred's mother wasn't angry with her for saying it.

She knew how much Hecate meant to her daughter, but she wanted her to be happy and said, "If you want to after a week, if you not happy, you can go back to Cackle's and spend the holiday with her." Mildred looked at her mother with glee and smiled, nodding her head.

When the week was nearly up, Mildred was happy that she told her mother she would stay for a few more weeks and spend the rest of the holiday with Hecate, which her mother was fine with. The next day Mildred and her mother decided they need to go to the shops, so they jumped in the car and was on their way. Coming up to a red light, Julie realized she had no breaks to stop.

She even tried the hand brake, which also failed. She got to the intersection, and as she was going through, another car had slammed into Julie and cause the car to roll. They were thrown about inside the car, hitting heads on windows, the dash, and steering wheel.

The front window had smashed all over Julie and Mildred. When the car finally stopped rolling, Mildred and Julie groaned in pain. She couldn't move her left arm. She felt pain in her head and stomach region.

She looked over to her mom and saw she was unconscious, with blood pouring from her head. Bystanders who had seen the crash dialed emergency services, the ambulance, fire brigade, and the police had arrived. It took them about an hour to get them both free, the fire brigade got the car doors open, and the paramedics set to work on getting them into the ambulance, and they were both raced to the hospital in critical conditions.

They both went into the operating room to have surgery. The doctors had to put Julie into a medically induced coma to help her with her healing. Julie suffered from a broken leg and arm and a brain injury, as Julie was unconscious when the rescue team got there.

Mildred suffered from a dislocated shoulder and wounds on her stomach from the windshield smashing. She had a gash on her head from hitting the window and a broken nose from the dash. Mildred had surgery to remove the glass from her stomach. She had to have stitches, and they cleaned the cuts on her face, stitched the gash on her head, and fixed her nose. Mildred was allowed to see her mother and just held her hand talking to her, hoping she could hear her in her coma.

Hecate was with Ada and the teachers when she felt pain going into her body that caused her to fall on the ground in agony. She knew what this meant, "Mildred." Hecate yelled in fear and worry.

She quickly left the room and grabbed her broomstick, she rushed to Mildred's house, but the house was empty she was about to go but stopped when she heard the neighbors talking. She heard them saying about Mildred and her mother being involved in a crash.

Hecate rushed back to Cackle's to tell Ada what she found out. When she returned, she saw the great wizard was there as well. Hecate told them about the crash. They were all worried about Mildred and her mother. Hecate sat down on the couch next to Ada and thought about Mildred.

Mildred wished she was with Hecate to realize that she had transferred herself to the staff room at Cackles. The teachers saw Mildred standing in the room and gasped. She had her left arm in a sling and her right hand on her stomach. She looked up when she heard people gasping, she saw Hecate and ran towards her crying on her shoulder.

After Mildred finished crying, she realized the hand on her stomach was wet and sticky and looked down and saw blood all over her hand. Hecate looked at Mildred with worry when she noticed how pale Mildred had got all of a sudden and looked down and saw blood. She quickly lifted Mildred's white top and saw one of the wounds had opened. Hecate conjured a towel and pressed it onto the wound while Ada called Amelia.

Amelia transferred to Cackle's and started to stitch up Mildred's wound while Hecate held her hand. The teachers had tears in their eyes every time they heard Mildred cry out in pain. They saw Ada grab Mildred's shoulder, giving her some comfort. The Great Wizard walked over and rested his hand on Mildred's knee and gave it a comforting squeeze. Ada and the Great Wizard looked at each other and shared a flashback about what Julie asked them.

Flashback

Julie sent a letter to Ada and told her that she needed to see her and the great wizard she had something to ask them. Ada contacted the great wizard, and they made their way to Julie's place. Julie greeted them with a smile as she let them in. Once inside, she offered tea and biscuits. They both accepted and started catching up on a few things. Julie spoke up and said, "The reason I wanted to see you and the Great wizard, Miss Cackle was because I want to tell you that Mildred told me of the bond you both have with her. I think it's wonderful for her and I couldn't think of better people to be there for her. Now I was going to ask if something was to happen to me that I could no longer be here, that you will be there for her and look after her for me please." They both sat there stunned, they were not expecting that, but they knew that they would look after Mildred even if nothing happened to her mother, so they agreed straight away. Julie was relieved.

Flashback over

Amelia finally finished stitching up the wound and looked up and saw Mildred asleep in Hecate's arms. She gave Ada instructions while Hecate transferred Mildred and herself into her bedroom. She magically changed Mildred into pajamas and lifted the covers, and put her to bed.

Hecate changed and climbed into bed next to Mildred, just holding her while they both slept. Mildred and Hecate woke up, and Hecate helped Mildred up from the bed and helped her get dressed. Hecate put her arm around Mildred's waist and transferred them into the dining hall to have breakfast.

For the rest of the holiday, Mildred spent it at Cackles with the teachers and the Great Wizard. Mildred also visited her mother, just talking to her and holding her hand. Mildred had told her friends what happened to her and her mother, and they all wished them well. The holiday had finally ended, and the Great Wizard left and went back to the council.
