Chapter 9
One afternoon Mildred and Hecate were walking around the forest near Cackle's holding hands when they came across two eggs, one egg was black and gold, and the smaller one was a pale blue.
Mildred picked up the smaller ones, and Hecate picked up the bigger one. Hecate then transferred them to the school, where they landed in the staff room. The teachers, Ada and the Great Wizard who was staying around for this school year, looked up and saw eggs in both Mildred and Hecate hands.
Ada and the Great Wizard went with them to the library to see if they could find what the eggs were. They walked back into the staff room with books in their arms. The other staff members didn't have anything to do to help them look through the books with them, Mildred saw a bit in her book, and everyone heard her shout glee.
They walked up to her and looked at the page over her shoulder. She said: "They look like dragons and phoenix eggs, and they will only hatch if they are given a name."
Mildred thought of some good names, so did the others but couldn't come up with any. Mildred finally thought of one and said, "Elio." The big egg started to crack. Everyone crowded and watched the egg as it hatched, and then they saw ahead come through the cracks. The rest egg fell apart, and they saw the rest of the dragon. And it was pure black with red, orange, and yellow on its scales, and it had bright lavender eyes.
Mildred looked at the other egg, and a perfect name popped up into her head, and she said, "Azura." The egg started cracking then all of a sudden it just burst apart, and they saw that it was a phoenix, it was the color of the sky, so it was a light blue and some white on it with also bright electric magic around it and it had spring green eyes. Mildred started cooing over them, Mildred then started lifting her hands, and before anyone could stop her, she touches both Elio and Azura's head.
Mildred, Elio, and Azura all began to glow. Everyone had to turn away from the bright light when the glowing finally dimmed they turned around they saw Coral, Ember, and Cassia were standing there in the room with them. Cassia walked up to Mildred and said, "You are ready for us to give you our gifts. We need to do it outside, though." The teachers, Ada, the Great Wizard, Mildred, and Hecate, followed them outside with Mildred and Hecate holding hands.
When they got outside, Coral, Ember, and Cassia all touched Mildred's shoulders, and they all started glowing when they let go of Mildred. She was still glowing as she absorbed all their powers. Mildred stopped glowing and started to fall. Before she fell, Hecate grabbed her.
Mildred leaned against Hecate while looking at them. Ember said, "Mildred, you will get some companions for help when you need them. Cassia had some, but hers were all killed." Mildred and the others watched as Ember and Cassia begin to fade until they were no longer there.
Coral walked up to Mildred and handed her the sword, bow, and arrows, and staff that she had. Coral then handed Mildred a book then bowed to Mildred before she faded completely. Mildred had tears in her eyes while Hecate hugged her close to her. Everyone headed back inside the school and went into the staff room. They watched as Hecate helped Mildred sit down, and she sat down next to Mildred and held her until she had calmed down.
Mildred opened the book, and everyone saw a holographic Coral, and she said, "Mildred, I reckon I've faded now. You are now the protector of all the wizards and witches, don't become me. I had people to help me when I became the protector, and I left them and was alone until Cassia and Ember found me. I have put an immortality spell in this book, so those you trust can be around you and help you. You will be the last until someone like you becomes worthy of the gifts you have, be better than me. You have people there to help you let them." Everyone watched as she faded and saw Mildred open it to the spell Coral talked about.
Everyone looked at each other and knew they couldn't abandon Mildred to be alone like Coral was. They walked up to Mildred, and Hecate stood up as well and said, "We will help you with your gifts Mildred, and we will become immortal with you." Mildred looked at Miss Bat and Algernon Rowan-Webb and said, "You don't have to become immortal with me if you don't want to. I understand if you don't want to." They looked at each other and said, "I'm sorry, Mildred, but we don't want to be immortal." She looked at them and hugged them and said, "That's okay." Mildred hugged the rest as well and said, "Thank you."
Mildred fed Elio meat until he got older to get his own food, and Mildred also fed Azura some fruit and some nuts, Hecate. Ada, the Great Wizard, and the teachers all helped Mildred look after Elio and Azura. They sometimes even saw them on Mildred's shoulders. Elio and Azura would stay with Ada and the great wizard in her office while Mildred was in class and at lunchtime. But Mildred was glad she was leaving this year.
Mildred mirror called Esmerelda and talked to her when she asked, "If you could become immortal, would you?" Esmerelda looked at Mildred, and she replied: "I have thought about it, but if I did, I would have to see my loved one die, and I wouldn't be able to see that." Mildred nodded her head understanding, she had asked Maud and Enid the same question, and they gave the same answer that Esmerelda did.
Miss Bat and Algernon Rowan-Webb told Mildred they wanted to get married, so Mildred started to run towards the staff room when she passed Hecate she grabbed her hand and dragged her to the staff room she also passed Ada and the Great Wizard and grabbed his hand and dragged him with them while Ada followed them laughing.
When they got to the staff room, Mildred yelled out, "Miss Bat and Algernon are getting married." When Miss Bat and Algernon walked in, everyone cheered and said, "Congratulations." They didn't care that Mildred told everyone. They just smiled.
Miss Bat even suggested that when Mildred was going to do the immortality spell, she would help her with it. Mildred took up her offer, and then the others offered their help as well. Mildred studied the spell, so did Hecate and the teachers. The year was finally up, and Mildred knew it was about time to do the spell.
Mildred even asked Miss Pentangle the question about the immortality spell, and she said: "Yes, I will become immortal with you. It will give me more time to catch up with Hecate." Mildred smiled and hugged her.
