Sirens wailed through the forest of the Holland Valley. Liz pounded through the trees with only the red lights flashing onto the trees to guide her. She could hear gunfire close by. Her chest heaved with each step. There were a million other places she should be, yet, there she was. Running straight into the fight.
Liz could barely see her hands in front of her. Her foot snagged on a branch and she landed face-first into the ground.
"Shit." She hissed.
Dirt covered her from head to toe, staining her white camo a sickly brown. It was something she was accustomed to. She never stayed clean or uninjured for long. Her body ached as she got back to her feet. There was no time to be weak. She took off into the woods again. With every step she told herself that she shouldn't be there. There was no telling who was waiting at that outpost. There could be Chosen or Resistance. Hell, she could even get shot. But none of those things convinced her to turn back. She was going, no matter the cost.
Her footsteps slowed when she heard shouting. She pulled the rifle off her shoulder and squatted. Through the scope she couldn't see much. The Peggies scrambled about. The shots were coming from downwind. Whoever it was, they were attacking from high up. They were on the roof. She looked in every direction but couldn't find the shooter. She needed to find a better angle.
There wasn't a lot of cover around the outpost. She dashed from tree-to-tree but managed to stay hidden. She halted to take a better look. There was a rebel on the roof with a rifle. He was shouting curses and firing in all directions. He was sloppy. Men like that were weak. Weak men didn't get to live.
Liz got into a firing position. She promised herself that she wouldn't do this. That she didn't want to kill. This wasn't for her though; this was something that she had to do. It was her training kicking in again. She lined up her scope on the man. He would never even know what hit him.
She took in a deep breath and pulled the trigger.
The man fell off the rooftop and smacked onto the ground. She let out a shaky breath. That was another kill. Another screw to add to the bat. There was a part of her that had enjoyed it…
The firing ceased for a moment. Despite the silence, she had the feeling that she was being watched. That there were eyes on her. She whipped around, raising her rifle. What she saw didn't surprise her in the slightest. There stood Jacob Seed, with his own rifle raised. He had just watched her kill that man. A scowl formed on her face. Of course, he would show up here. He always showed up when she didn't him to. Neither of them lowered their weapons.
"You haven't learned anything have you? I told you to always watch your back, Palmer. Now… what the hell are you doing here?" He asked.
There he went again, lecturing her. That was all he ever did. He wasn't wrong though, he never was. How long he had been watching her? He probably could have killed her six times over, but he just stood there lecturing her. Like he was her goddamn father.
"Excuse me. What the hell are you doing here? I thought checking on outposts was a little below your paygrade, Seed." She hissed.
Her finger curled around the trigger. She didn't know why. Jacob hadn't given any reason today to believe that he'd hurt her. He had hurt her in the past, but not recently. Recently, they had been close. That was one way to put it. If close was spending almost every minute together and sleeping next to him, then yes, they were close.
His eyes glanced down at her hands. "You gonna shoot me?" He asked.
She shrugged. "Drop your gun and I won't."
"You first." He knew her too well. He had trained her too well. There wasn't a chance in hell that she would drop her rifle first. Liz moved from the trigger but kept her aim. So, they just stood there, pointing their weapons at one another.
She stepped a little bit closer to examine him. It was hard to make out in the light but, blood covered his hands and jacket. His hair was disheveled, and his chest heaved. He had been hunting today.
"Why is there blood on you?" She asked.
There answer was clear. She knew why. Those Whitetail camps were burned to the ground by now. Everyone at them was dead too. More deaths that were on her. She swore that she didn't want to kill anyone else, but she had broken that oath already.
"How many?"
"At those camps? None actually. Your intel was shit as usual." He stepped closer to her as well.
"You still didn't answer my question! Why is there blood on you!" She needed to know if he had killed more people. There was also a part of her that was concerned that he was hurt. Damn her for still caring about him.
He ignored her question. He eyes crossed over the white specs that were in her hair. Ashes still covered her from head to toe. "What have you done?"
She shook her head. She was never going to get any answers out of him. "I started a fire. I wasn't going to stick around till you got back. Who knows what you were going to do to me?" She spat.
Jacob's face went slack. "You really thought I was going to hurt you today? I wanted you to stay put at the Ranch, so you'd be safe."
"You could have just said that instead of storming off!" Liz lowered her rifle and slung it over her shoulder. What a dick. If he just told her what he wanted, they wouldn't have as many problems. What was she supposed to do? Read his mind all the time? But he did really care about her. He didn't want her to die.
"You didn't have to be a little shit either."
Liz rolled her eyes. "Just shut up…"
She strode forward and wrapped her arms around his torso. Her face scrunched up as she pulled him deeper into the embrace. She told herself that she needed something solid to ground her. Truthfully though, she was just relieved to see him again. Even though their fight had only been this morning, it felt like he was gone for so long.
"Please don't leave me again…" She whispered.
Her words were so soft that they should have been impossible to hear over the ruckus. But he heard her, he always did.
"I won't." His arms wrapped around her in return and he placed a chaste kiss on her forehead.
"You're still an asshole." She mumbled into his chest.
"I know."
She looked up to surprisingly see a smile on his face. Even through the darkness, his eyes were still a perfect blue. She loved those eyes. They were about the only thing nowadays that gave her comfort. Her hands stayed gripped in his shirt.
"We're really into some deep shit, aren't we?" She asked.
"We always are."
Liz gave him a grin in return and released him. She turned back to the chaotic scene. Red lights still flashed through the trees and sirens roared. Gunfire sporadically went off. She took a deep breath and got ready for what was to come.
"What do we got here?" Her eyes peered over the outpost. It was hard to see what was happening after she shot that man. John's men had most likely spread out. If the Deputy was behind this, another wave of attacks would be coming, and maybe even a cougar. For her sake though, she hoped he wasn't behind it. She didn't want to confront this thing just yet.
"They're only a couple of assholes who think they can take what is ours." He spat.
He gazed down at her with that mighty look in his eyes. The one that held all the confidence in the world that he could get the job done. There were very few times that he shared that look just with her and looked at her with pride in return.
Liz had just burned her house down. She had agreed that she wouldn't kill anymore or be a part of anyone's war. So many conflicting emotions were running through her. She said she didn't want to fight, but she ran straight here when that siren went off. Maybe it was the way she was programmed and trained. In the end though, she just wanted to make Jacob proud of her.
"Shall we dispatch them, Mr. Seed? Maybe send them to meet their maker?" She gave a big grin and wagged her eyebrows.
"I thought you couldn't handle killing anymore?" He asked.
"Well… I can't. But desperate times."
These were desperate times indeed. Someone was going to have to clean up the mess at this outpost. It might as well be them. It went against her new 'code' but she didn't care. She really didn't. she just wanted to make Jacob proud. And besides, what else were they going to do tonight?
"Alright little lamb, we're going to run a…"
"Actually, I want to run point on this one."
The look that Jacob gave her was one of both confusion and pride. He looked at her like he was a proud dad, the way Eli had once looked at her. Despite how grateful she was to make him proud; it was a strange look to get from her lover. Lovers might not even be the right word to describe them. It made her happy all the same though.
"Okay. What'd you have in mind?"
Liz looked out at the scene before them. She'd never made any type of plan like this. Most of her battle experiences were impromptu. This time though, as the wheels turned in her head it just felt right. Like she was made for this. Maybe she wouldn't be such a terrible right-hand man.
She turned to Jacob. "If this is the Deputy, we should expect another attack. There are only stragglers right now, so let's clear them out. You flank left and get to that tower. Pick em' off. I'll go right and clear out the rest."
He nodded without objection. He really did trust her judgement. "See you on the other side sweetheart."
He sprinted off into the woods, quickly disappearing from sight. Liz took a deep breath. This was her operation, she did this. Any deaths that occurred here tonight would be on her. It was something that she'd have to live with. Liz drew her silver pistol. It only seemed proper that she use it. She took off towards the outpost.
The shouting had calmed some, but the sirens still wailed through the trees. Her heart beat a little faster with each step. Her eyes darted between the trees, searching for any threats. She slowed when she reached the edge of the warehouse. She couldn't see Jacob from where she was, but she knew that he was out there. She trusted him to watch her back.
She heard noise inside the building. She tiptoed around the corner and searched the building. This had been her plan, but there was some part of her wondering if she'd die tonight. While that was a thought that was always in her mind, for some reason it was a bit stronger tonight. It was hard to make out everything in the darkness, but she carefully cleared each room. She only wished she had a damn flashlight.
When she rounded another corner, she heard a gun cock. Shit. Liz dived back behind the wall before she was hit with a stream of bullets. The noise echoed through the warehouse. She counted six bullets in total. He was out.
There was no point charging headfirst in the dark. So, she backtracked slightly and hid beneath a pile of wooden pallets. It wasn't like her to hide. Jacob certainly wouldn't approve of it either. But something told her that she should just wait for her moment. While he wouldn't approve, it was something that he had said to her a million time before… She couldn't beat him physically, but she could out-think them. It was the best move right now.
She heard footsteps coming her way. Moments later a man emerged around the corner, rifle in hand. He had no idea she was here, percent. Liz aimed for his foot and pulled the trigger. He screamed out in pain and collapsed to the ground. Liz burst up through the pallets, keeping her gun trained on him.
"Yeah that's right stay down asshole." She hissed. She kicked the rifle out of reach and planted her foot into his midsection. He cried out in pain once again.
"Just get on with it. Shoot me."
"Maybe I will. You're gonna answer some stuff first. Who's behind this? Is it the Whitetails?" She asked.
Interrogating a rebel hadn't been part of her plan but she just needed to know. Not if there was another attack coming, but if Eli was here. It was unlikely but she needed to be sure. She couldn't face him, not dressed like this.
"Lady, you can go straight to hell. I ain't telling you shit. I'm not afraid to die, even at the hands of the blonde bitch leader of The Chosen."
Her eyes grew wide. "What?"
How the hell did he know about said blonde bitch. The only rebels who knew Liz were the ones that knew her before, not as a Peggie. She didn't lead the chosen. She hadn't been back to the chalet since she had almost died.
Liz slammed her foot on his wound. "Talk."
He groaned. "Word has it that a woman stepped in and killed one of Jacob's top officials. She's been running everything of his ever since. Didn't think you'd be such a tiny ass little bitc…"
Liz raised the gun to the man's forehead and pulled the trigger. Blood splattered over her pants as his head slammed to the floor. How do the rebels know what happened that day? Had Jacob been telling his men that she was in command now? That didn't feel right to her. He told her that she didn't have to choose a side, just be with him. Deep down she knew she was truly fooling herself. She has been on Jacob's side since the moment she came back into Hope County, whether she liked it or not.
Her mind was static as she cleared the rest of the warehouse. She had felt nothing when she killed that man. Her thoughts were only occupied by the thought of the small blonde bitch who supposedly ran The Chosen.
When she got outside, she could hear multiple shots that weren't far. It was Jacob. Whoever was here was probably dead by now. Liz spotted a man to her right. She raised her weapon and fired. He collapsed to the ground, same as the other man. That was three people tonight. What she hated most of all was how good she was at it. It was almost effortless.
Another noise came from the trees close by. She headed towards it, ready to dispatch anyone else that might cross her path. She carefully moved from tree to tree, just like before. A shadow caught the corner of her eye. As soon as she raised her gun to the figure, he bolted. It took her three shots before one tore through his stomach.
The man collapsed to the ground. "Fucking hell!"
Her eyes grew wide. That was a voice she would recognize anywhere. She holstered her pistol and sprinted towards the man. She had just shot her best friend.
"Wheaty!" She cried out.
He was still clutching his side when she got to him. His hands were stained red. He was bleeding out. She bent down and clasped her hands over his, putting pressure on the wound.
"Liz?" The boy's face grew pale. Almost like he was staring into the eyes of a ghost. He tried to scramble away from her but couldn't move. He cried out in pain once more.
"Shhh. It's gonna be okay Wheaty. I'll get you help. I'm sorry…" She kept her hands clasped on the wound. Blood continued to gush out. There was nothing she could do to stop it.
"Why are you wearing a Chosen outfit Liz?" What the hell is going on?"
Tears formed in her eyes when she looked up at him. Here is the moment she was afraid of. She would have to face everything that she'd done. She wasn't prepared for this.
"Sit up." She removed her scarf and tied it around his torso as tight as she could. That should do something for the bleeding.
Wheaty's hand cradled her arm. "Dep told us that you went to the valley. You didn't go because you were afraid, only to join the Peggies…" His eyes searched her face for answers, but she gave none. How could she tell him that no matter what she did it always got drawn back to Jacob? Every choice she had made since getting back here was related to him. She couldn't tell Wheaty that she cared for that man, or even worse wanted to make him proud…
"I… yeah. I did Wheaty. I just, couldn't stay with you all." Tears fell on her cheeks. Killing a man hadn't made her cry but disappointing her friend… that sure did. Her hands were still stained with his blood. She had shot him, and he might die because of her.
"But why? I thought you liked being with us. We all cared for you, Eli, Dep, Sharky, me…"
Liz knew what she meant from 'me'. It should have been more obvious to her at the time. The way he had danced with her, and all the music he shared with her. Wheaty was so sweet. He was one of the sweetest men she'd ever known. It should have been him that she was spending her time with. If things had been different, she would be.
"I'm not the person you think I am. I'm not good. I can't be with the Whitetails. It's not my place. I… I wish I could make you understand but I can't. I'm sorry." She sniffled.
A thought flashed through her mind that shouldn't have. She cupped the back of his head and planted a soft kiss on his lips. It was nothing like the passionate kisses she'd shared with Jacob. It was more heartbreaking than that. The kiss was gentle, a promise goodbye for what could have been. It wasn't right of her to pity Wheaty, but she did. She pulled away. It was wrong to give the boy false hope, but it was the only thing that she could give him.
A pained smile came across his face. "Damn. I didn't know I had to be shot to get a kiss."
Liz couldn't help but smile as well. There he was again, always trying to see the best in things. He was too good for her. Too kind for the girl who had murdered so many people. He didn't deserve that.
She stood up and grabbed his hand to pull him up. "Come on I'll get you hel…"
A bright light tore across the left side of her face. The sound of a gunshot quickly followed. Liz didn't scream out in pain. She simply reached up to touch her face. It felt like it was on fire. She looked at her hand only to see blackened flesh that came off. Among the ringing in her ears she could only form one word.
"Shit."
Liz collapsed, her head smacking against the cold ground. So, this was how it was going to happen. There were many times she thought she'd die but somehow, she survived. She didn't see a way that she walked away from this.
Even if this is how it ended, she'd had a hell of a journey. She had made it through this farther than anyone might have expected. She was a fighter, but it seemed that she wouldn't be going out in a fight. She had only herself to blame. She had come to this outpost ready to kill everyone here. She had been bested due to her foolishness. If she died it would all be okay.
Voices approached but she couldn't make them out. Whoever it was, they were here to finish the job. Footsteps trampled beside her. She didn't know how long she laid there until a flashlight shone in her face. The only thing she could make out was the outline of a cowboy hat. It was the Deputy…
The ringing in her ears had finally calmed when he light moved from her eyes. She saw a sniper rifle hanging from his shoulder. He had been the one to shoot her. The man who had once been her savior from captivity, would now be her destruction.
Dep turned away from her. "Alright I want y'all to get Wheaty out of here right now! Get him to Fall's End before he bleeds out." He yelled.
He reached down to grip her vest and threw her forward. She collapsed onto her hands and knees. She looked up to see Jess and Sharky carrying their wounded friend. Wheaty had passed out. He laid limp in their arms. Jess gave her a look of disdain. Sharky though, looked heartbroken. His music buddy had not been the person he thought she was. He looked like he would cry.
"Chicka…" He said. Liz's heart broke with him.
"Get out of here! I'll deal with the Peggie."
Liz watched as her friends stumbled off into the darkness. It was the last time she would see any of them, and they all hated her. Dep grabbed the back of her collar and snatched her back. He manhandled her across the forest floor. Liz didn't do anything to stop him. The word Peggie bounced around in her mind. That's all she was now. She was not a Whitetail but a Chosen. She supposed that she was one the entire time.
He dragged her a few more yards before dumping her on her knees. She looked up at him to see the face of pure hatred. She didn't know that the Deputy could even harbor such feelings.
"You know, for a while Liz I thought you were just… stupid. That you didn't know any better. I almost believed that you were just some dumb college bitch, and you that didn't know shit about shit. But you were easy to figure out…" Dep said. He crouched down to meet her eye line and titled her chin to meet him. His finger stayed there. From the look of it, he wanted his point to come across very clearly.
"First it was with your little conversation with Eli, then you'd constantly sneak off to talk to him, and finally the day he captured you again. Just the way he talked to you… C'mon Liz let's not pretend everyone doesn't know what's been happening. You climbed into bed with the man. No shame in admitting it."
Her face scrunched up. Why did everyone think that? Sure, now she's technically climbed into bed with Seed. But that wasn't until recently. It definitely didn't happen the first time around. She was just sick of people bringing it up.
"You're wrong…" She said. She couldn't give him a reason why. He wasn't wrong but she was tired of his shit.
"You really think he cares about you? You're just a toy to him. A worthless thing that will be tossed away once he is done using you. Anytime he looks at you he knows that he's beaten Eli. You're only still alive because of your last name."
He was right. The only reason she hadn't been killed her first day here was because she was a Palmer. But he was also wrong. She'd fought like hell to be here. She'd lied and killed to be where she is now. Her fate would not be decided by some goddamn Deputy.
"Fuck you."
Dep backhanded her across the face, and she did her best to muffle a scream. The left side of her face had been sliced open by the bullet. More blood spilled out onto her cheek.
"Now sweetheart, I want you to call out to your boyfriend. He and I have some unfinished business."
Jacob was on the other side of the warehouse, probably finishing off the last of the rebels. He probably couldn't even see her and the Deputy. They were concealed deep within the trees. Dep could leave her here for dead and no one would ever find her.
"Call out to him." Dep said.
There wasn't a chance in hell that she was going to lure him here. She puckered her lips and spit blood right in his face. Dep calmly wiped the blood away and stood up.
"I wanted to do this whole without hurting you, but you left me no choice." He raised his pistol and put a bullet in her right shoulder. Liz collapsed to the ground once more and screamed.
"Jacob!" She cried out. Her plea carried through the stillness of the woods. It brought no response.
"Again." He planted his boot into her shoulder, pushing the bullet down further. It had to be the most excruciating pain she'd ever felt.
"Jacob! Jacob… please… please…" She whimpered into the grass. If someone didn't help her soon, she might die.
"How can you still side with him after everything he's done? Do you know what he did to his old war buddy?"
Liz shook her head. "He didn't want that. He didn't…"
"He killed your family Liz. Your mom Lisa, your dad David, David Jr…"
"Don't you dare say their names! You didn't know them. Everything was fine before you got here. You caused this!" Tears streamed down her face.
"No Liz, you did. You have had every opportunity to kill the most evil man in Hope County and what did you do instead? You slept with him! Anything that happens from here on out is on you."
She gritted her teeth. Her face stayed planted in the dirt. She could barely move. "I'm gonna kill you Deputy. If it is the last thing I do…"
Dep gripped her collar and pulled her back to her knees. "No, you're going to die here tonight Elizabeth."
Her eyes grew wide. Death didn't scare her. It didn't… She'd accepted it many times. But hearing him say it out loud… that did terrify her.
"Deputy!" A roar came from the trees. He raised his pistol to meet the sound. He spun around, trying to tell which direction it came from. Liz could also see a glint of fear in his eyes. Good. He deserved to be afraid as well.
A disheveled Jacob appear from the trees with his rifle raised. He was soaked in as much blood as she was. To anyone else, he might have looked like a feral monster. To her, he looked like a knight. Jacob had come for her. She wasn't sure that he would. If she were in his position, she wasn't sure that she would have come.
"Nice of you to join us Seed. We've been waiting for you." Dep said.
Jacob slowly approached them. He got within a few feet. He didn't look down at Liz though, he only glared at Deputy. "Let her go. She doesn't have anything to do with this. This is about you and me."
"No this is about her!" His gun moved to the back of Liz's head. She took a shaky breath. Her body was still felt like it was on fire. Tears continued to come despite her efforts to stop them. She didn't like being weak in front of Jacob, but she had failed him. He deserved to know that she let him down. If she had just gone away like she'd planned this wouldn't have happened. And now she or Jacob might pay the price for her stupidity.
"I just have to say that I'm impressed, Seed. You played me for the fool. You got this girl to infiltrate my operation. I hadn't expected that from you. But now she needs to pay for the trouble she's caused me."
"What do you want Deputy?" Jacob growled. She'd never seen him this angry only a few times before. All those times he was either pissed at her or was ready to tear apart whoever had hurt her. Neither of those options ever ended well.
"First I want you to drop your gun."
It was only now that Liz realized her own weapons were missing. Dep must have tossed them aside. It was a shame; she really liked that pistol. It was the only thing she had that Jacob had given her. Jacob didn't give up his weapons though. He took a step towards Dep.
"I don't take orders from you. What you're gonna do is let the lady go and then you'll scurry off into the woods. Be grateful that I am letting you leave here with your head attached."
Dep shoved the gun into the back of her skull once more. She whimpered. "Ah ah. You should be concerned about someone else's head being attached. I'd hate to have to blow Miss Palmer's brains out."
"Jacob…" Her plea was a whisper, but he heard it all the same. He finally looked down at her. The anger from his face faded. The conflict was clear in his eyes. He didn't want to be weak, but he couldn't let her die. He hadn't before. She didn't think that he would start now. With a sigh, he tossed his rifle and sidearm to the ground beside him.
Deputy looked amazed. "Why do you care about her so goddamn much? What do you see in her? I didn't think all it would take to make Jacob Seed weak was some dumb little girl."
He wasn't wrong. Jacob had been weak and confused ever since she'd came into his life. His operations were constantly disrupted, and he's killed countless of his own men to save her life. He was constantly weak because of her. She couldn't help but wonder if he regretted it all. What if he left her here to die at the hands of the Deputy? It would solve almost all his problems.
"The only weak one here Deputy is you. You think you can come in here and destroy all that I've built! You and Eli are cowards, hiding in your bunker, attacking outposts in the night. Because you know if you faced me head on, you'd lose!"
Dep laughed. "You're right. We wouldn't beat you head on, but it doesn't mean we won't win. This county has had enough of your family. I wasn't planning on either of you being here tonight. But when I saw her, dressed like that, I figured you weren't far behind. It gave me the perfect opportunity to lure you out… I want your box Jacob."
So that's what this was all about. Dep wanted the one thing that held power over him. It was what held power over all of them, even her. He wanted the music box. Just the thought of it made her shiver. Jacob hadn't used the box on her since that accidental day in the Grand View. She had killed so many people that day. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing if that box was gone.
"I know you have it with you. You'd never trust anyone with it, not even her. Give it to me."
"No."
Liz shouldn't have been surprised at how quickly he refused, but she was. That music box was his greatest weapon. Of course, he wouldn't give it up not even for her…
"Not good enough." Dep jammed his finger into her wound. It seared into her shoulder and she cried out again. Her eyes locked with Jacob's, pleading for him to do something, anything…
Dep bent down and whispered in ear. "Beg him."
She shook her head and sniffled back tears. "No. I've never begged for my life. I'm not starting now. If Jacob decides that a damn box is worth more than me, then that's on him. If you kill me though, he'll kill you in return. I'm willing to die tonight Deputy! Are you?"
Jacob had said something similar to her in his bunker. She had been so ready to kill him that night. Everything would have been better if she had killed him that night. She would already be dead right now. And she wouldn't be in so much pain. It was time. He would never choose her over his power, that's just the way it was.
The Deputy took a moment to consider his options. He put his finger around the trigger. "I think I can accept that."
This was it. Liz closed her eyes and awaited a swift death. It never came.
"Wait! Just wait…" Jacob said. Liz opened her eyes to see him pull the music box out of his jacket. The Deputy had called Jacob's bluff.
There was another thing she had never seen in Jacob's eyes before. Fear… It wasn't a fear of death, but a fear of loss. The loss of her. The weak little girl that had shown up in one of his cages one day had turned him soft. The music box was the Deputy's only weakness, and Jacob's only weakness was her.
"Please don't kill her." He said. The box landed at her feet.
She couldn't help but gasp. He was giving up the music box… for her. That thing was his greatest weapon. He'd used it to keep hundreds of people under his control. It wasn't a decision that he made lightly. He truly cared for her. Another word for it could possibly be love…
Deputy picked the box off the ground to inspect it. He had probably wanted to hold the contraption for a long time. Liz herself hadn't even held it. She knew that the box was important to Jacob but honestly, she was glad that it would be gone. It wasn't because that sacrifice had saved her life, but because now Liz was free from it too.
"You're not going to control anyone with your bullshit ever again." He dropped the box to the ground and crushed it with his foot. The metal gears crunched into the ground. Good riddance to that damn thing.
"I'm a man of my word. Take her." He moved the pistol from her head and shoved her forward. She planted face first into the dirt. Jacob didn't catch her. Instead he lunged for his weapon. He fired until the magazine was empty. The Deputy though was already gone. He had disappeared into the night like he'd never even been there.
Liz laid there limp. She'd lost so much blood tonight. Without Jacob's help she would have died. Jacob crouched down and pulled her into his lap. His hand cradled her face.
"Little lamb…"
She didn't look at him. Her eyes were focused on the stars. They were so beautiful. It made her think of all the times she would go camping with Eli. A time that seemed so long ago. She could never go back to that.
He pulled a radio from his jacket. "I need a chopper at the railyard! I have a Chosen down."
Jacob continued to speak to her, but she could barely hear him. The last thing she saw was helicopter blades above her before passing out in his arms.
