One night, Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos went for a walk.
Carlos looked up at the sky. The moon was shining bright.
"Guys," he said suddenly. "There's going to be an eclipse next morning, right?"
"Yeah," Mal said slowly, wondering what this had to do with anything.
"I read in this book that a man had an idea years ago, and it's kind of scary. The idea was that during an eclipse, all spells will lose power," Carlos said.
"Where did you get that book?" Evie asked.
Carlos shrugged.
"Belle's library," he said simply.
Jay laughed at his friend's silly idea.
"Carlos, that's just crazy," he said. "We've been here for years and have heard nothing about this. That book is probably some sort of idea a guy had years ago."
Evie nodded her agreement, but Mal frowned. This worried her. If all spells lost power...well, Auradon would be a mess.
But she pushed away those thoughts as they walked inside. She planned to talk to Ben about this the next day, to find out if Carlos really was just being crazy, or if this was actually true.
Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos ran through a street on a place that had to be the Isle. They were dressed in their classic leather outfits, but something was off. They were nineteen.
They arrived at an alley that looked just like any other one, but it clearly wasn't to them.
"Come on!" Mal hissed. "It has to be here!"
"Start searching," Evie suggested.
The friend dug through the bags of trash in the alley. They didn't say what they were searching for, all of them were silent as they worked.
"Found it!" Jay exclaimed. He held up an orb no bigger than his palm. It was dark purple and seemed to be swirling with magic inside.
Mal raced over and he handed it to her without a second though. The purple-haired girl stared at the orb as it began to glow brightly at her touch.
Suddenly, the Isle seemed to shake around them. The four's eyes widened in fear.
"Come on!" Carlos shouted. They all got up and started running as fast as they could. They seemed to be going with no destination in mind, but it didn't feel that way to Mal. Suddenly-
Mal sat straight up in bed, her breathing coming quickly.
She didn't understand why the dream had affected her like this. She had nightmares about the Isle all the time - who couldn't? But for some reason, this one seemed different. It was almost like the dream was...telling her something.
Suddenly, she heard something. She jumped, still shaken from her dream.
She got up slowly and silently, so she wouldn't wake Ben - who was still sleeping. Mal looked at the cage that she kept her mother in.
But Maleficent was gone.
Her breathing - which had just calmed down - sped up again. She had to tell Evie. In a matter of minutes, she had run out of the castle and was on her way to Evie and her boyfriend Doug's castle.
But as she was driving, she heard someone scream. It sounded like it was Jane. Mal stopped the car and got out. She ran in the direction of the scream, but Jane wasn't there.
Mal looked around, searching for her friend, but Jane was nowhere to be found.
She couldn't help the feeling that something very, very bad had happened to her friend. She pulled out her phone and dialed Carlos and Jay's numbers. She told them to come to Evie's castle, and that she had something important to tell them.
Mal got back in her car and drove to her best friend's castle. She rang the doorbell what felt like a million times before a very tired-looking Evie opened it.
"Mal?" she asked in confusion. "What are you doing here."
Mal didn't answer, but asked, "Is Doug here?"
Evie shook her head.
"No. It's our anniversary soon and I insisted he get out of the house for a night so I could work on his present. I guess I fell asleep. If you need him, he's at-"
"No," Mal interrupted. "I need to talk to you, but I don't want anyone to hear. Carlos and Jay will be here soon - this is a job for the Core Four."
Evie nodded, knowing that something was wrong if Mal was acting so odd.
She led her friend into the living room, where they sat for a little while with Evie still looking at Mal with a worried look. Her friend was wearing her purple PJs and her hair was uncombed. She looked like she was in a daze.
They just sat there until they heard knocking at the door. Evie ran to open it and saw Jay and Carlos.
"What's happening?" Jay asked immediately, worried about his sisters. The four of them called each other sisters and brothers because they were so close.
"I'm trying to find that out," Evie said, opening the door even more. "Come in."
They followed her to the living room, where Mal looked up immediately at their entrance. The three sat, and looked at their sister.
"Mal, what's happening?" Carlos asked.
Mal took a deep breath and looked out the window at the sky. The moon and Sun were covering each other. An eclipse.
She turned back and looked her brother in the eyes as she spoke.
"The theory in the book was true."
