Chapter 8
Kai opened her eyes to the grey sky.
It took her a moment to realize that she was looking at the sky and it took even longer for her to attempt to sit up. When she did manage to get into a slumped over sitting position, felt what little energy she had left in her drain out of her.
It was all she could to keep from passing out again.
The wound on her shoulder throbbed painfully. It was clear to her that the wound was infected but as Kai learned a moment later, she wouldn't be able to use the vials she stole as they had been shattered.
But the teen didn't have the strength to move or to act upset.
In an attempt to move out of the quickly cooling air, Kai stood and started to shakily walk away from the river bed that she had been deposited on. Kai didn't know where she was or how she was going to get back to her fighter. Everything looked the same, and her head wouldn't stop spinning. She never got more than five steps before she had to stop and lean against a tree, waiting for the feeling of dizziness and nausea to pass.
There was no way that she was going to make it back to her ship but she had to try. Out in the opinion, injured and weaponless was a good way to get herself caught.
But she was far too weak to find her way back.
Her foot caught something and Kai pitched forward. She groaned as her fingers curled around a handful of leaves as pain, hot and clear, pulsed through her shoulder. Kai laid there for what felt like an eternity, using every second that passed to think about her life choices.
You know, as you do when you're dying on a planet full of people that wanted her dead.
She had survived the worst war that the Galactic Republic had seen, had fought in countless battles, only to die of an infection on a planet of humans that were trying to hunt her.
Kai wondered, depressingly, if her passing would be painful or if she would slowly drift off into nothingness.
Her eyes closed before they reopened. She had to prolong the inevitable and hopefully hold out long enough for someone to find her and help her.
That is, if that someone who found her didn't kill her on sight.
The sounds of branches breaking and leaves crunching could be heard as she slowly started to fade. They were getting closer and closer to her, but Kai was already drifting out. She prayed that whoever found her showed mercy on her.
"Meetal, Doc." The voice was close. "Voo-tal mex ul. Neem lax….uh."
The footsteps and voices halted abruptly. Kai only had the briefest glimpse of those standing over her before she embraced the darkness out of sheer exhaustion.
