Chapter 16

"This plan stinks." She muttered.

She had been shoved into the trunk of the men's car, the two of them planning on riding all the way past the road block that they apparently put up.

It wasn't very comfortable and the air was a bit stale, but Kai figured it was better than a dissection table and life as a floating body, barely alive in a tube of formaldehyde. She had her hands pressed against the roof as they rumbled down the road. Her heart was pounding when, after what felt like forever, the car came to a stop.

Bang, Bang, Bang!

Kai started to pray her heart out. She heard voices, those that didn't belong to Captain Quinn or Doctor Hynek, speak. Her hands clutched her saber, almost wanting to use it out of instinct. She listened to the voices, her heart pounding heavily in fear. Fear that she hadn't experienced in a long, long time.

The teen closed her eyes and tried to level her breathing.

Finally, Kai felt the car take off. She relaxed shakily, almost to the point of tears. They drove for an unknown amount of time, but it was long enough that Kai had dozed off, seeing how her night had been disrupted. She jerked awake when the car stopped and some one popped the trunk open.

"Where…...?" She asked drowsily. The place that they had arrived was the middle of nowhere on a stretch of road. Then she remembered. "Oh. Yeah."

With the help of Doctor Hynek and Captain Quinn, Kai found herself standing on the edge of the road, smiling at the two men.

"I wanna thank you guys for your help."

"You could always come with us." Doctor Hynek's offer drew a quirked eyebrow from Captain Quinn.

"No, thank you. I'm not gonna put you guys in danger." Her eyes darted towards the horizon, "Besides, I'm not one to live in a shed for the rest of my life."

"Where are you going to go now?"

Kai took a deep breath. "Don't know. Probably somewhere that's warm and not densely populated."

Captain Quinn snorted. "Good luck with that."

"Thanks." Kai sighed. She hefted her pack over her shoulder, clipping her lightsaber to her belt. "I'll see you guys around?"

"Be safe out there, Kai."

"Thank you, Doctor Hynek. You too."

And with that she started to walk away. Kai turned around right before she entered the forest, watching the men drive off.

May the Force be with you two.
