Chapter Eight

All you ever need to do is ask

A few days had passed since Elizabeth had seen Henry. She knew in her rationale mind that this was to be expected, he was of course working down at the marine base and it was not the weekend yet so he couldn't leave, she didn't however quite expect the lack of contact from him. She began to question his kind and caring nature, what man would leave a woman crying on her doorstep and not speak to her for four days? She kept asking herself.

Elizabeth walked down he road and turned into her favourite little coffee shop. She glanced and noticed that an elderly couple were sat in her usual spot, sighing to herself she decided to order her drink to go.

'Hello stranger, we haven't seen you for a few days' the gentleman who Elizabeth had come to know well greeted her, his wife smiling behind as she looked up to see Elizabeth.

'Hi, oh yes I've been busy' she lied

'Aww well we need to thank you anyway' the wife chirped in

'Thank me?' She looked confused

'Yes, that handsome man, your friend? Well he comes in here twice a day every day now, so thank you for generating business for us' they smiled and Elizabeth was a taken back. Henry goes to the coffee shop twice a day…why. She thought to herself. Her mind flooded with thoughts of henry, if truth be told he handnt left her mind since the day she met him, but recently she tried so hard to push him away but it wasn't working. She looked up and looked around the cafe. She caught a glimpse of herself in the reflection of the window; she remembered who she was and the game change. She threw her head around, her hair swishing from side to side as she flashed that million dollar smile.

'Make that two drinks to go please' she smiled confidently. She had somewhere to be. She paid and took the cups in her hand before taking a walk towards the marine base. She had no idea what she was doing, she was not normally this spontaneous but she knew she needed to settle a few things. She had known Henry for nearly a month now and she needed to get a few things off her chest. She walked the blocks towards the base and her fear rattled through her body, her hands shaking as the drinks spilled out of the drinking hole a little, but determination ran through her thicker than anything and when she reached the base she took a deep breath.

'Hi can I see Henry McCord please, it's important?' She asked the guard but they ignored her, she was about to respond when someone shouted from behind her

'You after hank?' She turned to face the man behind her

'Henry McCord, he's a piolt' she clarified

'Aye, Hank is on lunch, give me five minutes and I'll tell him you're here. What's your name?' She stumbled upon her words

'El..Elibet' the words left her mouth, not even making any sense but the man had already left in pursuit of Henry. Elizabeth let out a heavy breath and looked around finding a bench opposite the base. She took a seat and held the drinks close to keep her warm. Her heart instantly smiled as she spotted Henry walking towards her. He smiled when he realised It was her, his walked turned into a jog and before he knew it he was stood infant of her

'Elibet?' He raised an eyebrow

'Hank?' She played back

'Hank the tank, it's because I have a massive -'

'Woah there pilot, too much information'

'Massive engine in my plane' he clarified for her dirty brain and her cheeks flushed.

'For you' she changed the subject and handed him a drink as he took a seat next too her

'Thank you, let me guess this is hot chocolate?'

'How did you know?' She looked confused and he gave her a sideways smile

'Elizabeth I am infatuated by you, I watch you because I want to get to know you, I know that your nose crinkles at the smell of coffee which is a sign you don't like something' he pointed out

'Thats how I knew' he finished his sentence and she lowered her drink and began to fiddle with the lid, picking at it as he continued to speak

'no alcohol, not eating in the morning, no coffee, the smell putting you off? It was obvious when I seen that envelop in the box, I knew it was a scan' he explained now looking at her as she continued to look down at her cup. After a few moments of silence Elizabeth reached down placing her cup on the floor, dipping her hand into her bag and pulled the envelope out. She turned to Henry and handed It over to him to open.

'I haven't been able to open it, but it's true. I am pregnant' she had never said it out loud, too anyone. The reality hit her in the face, winding her. She exhaled with a loud puff of air before carrying on

'About 13 weeks ago it was my or would have been my brothers eighteen birthday, I got stupidly drunk, let myself down by having a one night stand with god knows who and well, the results of alcohol, sex and no protection for my heart or my body was a baby. I tried to consider a termination but I couldn't do it, he or she doesn't deserve that because of my mistake. So here we are. This is what I wanted to talk to you about, this is my, well baggage I suppose' she swallowed determined not to cry and to be open, she knew she had lost him when he walked away days ago, so she had nothing more to lose.

'Elizabeth' he started but she cut him off

'No its ok, I just wanted to clear the air because Henry somehow you have become the most important person in my life, I've been selfish in not telling you sooner and I care about you too much to not tell you, I am sorry I've fucked this up, if I knew I was going to meet you I swear I wouldn't have had that one night stand but I did and I have to learn to love and accept this baby and my whole life plan will be different now, that is my doing and it will be ok at somepoint, I just need to get there. But you Henry, gosh you're going to make someone so happy one day, you really are the most amazing man, and I am only sorry that this was our fate, I wish we had more time. But I needed you to know all this. Thank you for the most amazing few weeks Henry' she stood up collecting her things and walked away.

Henry followed her. He ran around in front of her and stopped her

'No you don't, you don't get to tell me all that and walk away. Do you ever listen? Elizabeth I don't mind, I like you for who you are'

'henry don't be ridiculous you do not want a baby and someone else's baby at that' she tried to push passed but he stopped her

'Why don't I?' He challenged her, she looked up at him, a mix of annoyance and confusion

'Elizabeth I have fallen for you, all of you' he admitted

'But -'

'But nothing, please just let yourself fall, trust me Elizabeth, I am stood here telling you I am ready to learn to love and accept this baby with you' he smiled as tears filled her eyes

'I have your heart in my hand, and I promised you I wasn't going to break it, I can do one better, I'll carry yours and that babies in both my hands, never breaking either' he swallowed the lump in his throat, the thought of becoming a father was a dream of his.

Elizabeth couldn't respond she just cried her whole body in disbelief

'It's that simple?' She stated

'What is?'

'Having what you want, you I mean, All I had to do was come here and well ask' she shook her head in shock

'Well you technically haven't asked me' He winked, wrapping his arms around her waist and she laughed through her tears

'Henry, I don't even know what to ask' she laughed

'Fine, Elizabeth, please can I be in your life and this babies life?' She nodded in complete happiness

'I want nothing more' she crashed her lips onto his and it immediately deepened, their hands roaming one another bodies as their tongues danced within one another mouths. Elizabeth pulled back and gasped for breath her hands wrapped around his neck.

'Now there is only two things left to do' he winked and she frowned at him

'Open this envelope together and look at our baby' he smiled ripping the envelope open and handing her the scan faced down.

'Together' she whispered as his hand covered hers they flipped it over, and their in black and white was a scan of Elizabeth's baby, a baby she was going to raise with the best man in the world. She leant into him as tears filled her eyes

'Oh Elizabeth' Henry gasped in amazement, no words left her mouth, her arm just held him tighter. He kissed the top of her head and she looked up at him

'And the second thing?'

'Well if we're having a baby I guess we need to do the deed' he winked trying to add humour back into their lives for a moment or two. She rolled her eyes and laughed, her hands playing with his uniform.

'All you have to do is ask McCord' she winked

'Oh I can do better than ask' he lowered his mouth to her ear 'I can demand and dominate' he teased pulling back away.

'I need to head back, I will ask for special leave tonight and come over'

'No its ok, its only one more day until the weekend, we can wait for you' she smiled

'I look forward to seeing you both' he smiled, his hand resting on her tummy as he kissed her goodbye.
