Kim's head was spinning and her entire body went numb, she felt a weight pulling her but she fought to stay, "Kim…Kim…BURGESS!" her whole body was shaking and the voice sounded distant like someone was running after her but was just out of earshot. She couldn't move her focus anywhere other than the doctors in front of her pounding on Adams chest, he was dying in front of her all over again and she knew it was her fault. She was willing him to live knowing she didn't want to have to explain to his son that his father was gone. She knew if he left them now she would blame herself for the rest of her life.

"We have to go now" the doctor and nurses were wheeling Adam to the door and further away from her, she tried to follow but the weight holding her wouldn't let her follow, "Dammit Tay, let go of me" she was fighting her trying to shake her off but Tay kept her grip, "I'll let go when you calm down."

Kim huffed and let her body relax knowing that even though Tay was tiny, she could hold her own. "I'm calm" she raised her hands in defeat "Now can you let me go?" Tay loosened her grip and spun Kim around to face her, "Are you sure you're good?" Kim nodded and for the first time looked around the room and noticed the shell-shocked Kate huddled in the corner terrified.

"What happened?" Kim was barley holding her emotion in.

Kate shook her head, "I'm not sure, his heart stopped, the rest was a blur." she answered as tears streamed down her face.

"He'll be okay, he always is" Kim answered defiantly, straightening her shoulders trying to convince herself that her words were true. She wiped the tears from her face with her palms, gave Tay a quick hug and headed back toward the waiting room hoping to put as much distance between herself and Kate as she could.

"Ugh" Kim huffed as she stood to stretch her legs. She wandered toward the window on the far side of the waiting room where Voight was staring at the city lights. "Need anything?" she asked taking the spot next to him, watching the cars below just carrying on with their lives.

He glanced at her and shook his head, "Was I wrong?"

"Wrong about what?" Her brows furrowing not understanding the question. "About thinking you two could work together, you haven't been civil in years why'd I think you could do this?" She grabbed his elbow and pulled him into her side, "Don't blame yourself this would have happened regardless, the guy was cagey from the moment he opened the door, if it was anyone but me they both would probably be dead, besides it's me who shouldn't have left him."

Voight shook his head "I've never really understood what went wrong between you two, the two of you spent years dancing around each other, it was a will they or won't they for years, even when it was obvious to everyone around you. We even had a bet at one point?" he chuckled Kim rolled her eyes and sighed "And you finally get it all and you just throw it away."

Kim pulled herself from Voight and stood up straight continuing to watch the lights. "I don't know, I got pregnant and quit the unit, he started drinking more, we fought about everything, we just fell apart, and Liam was getting hurt in the process so I asked him to leave." She shrugged her shoulders and sighed wishing she could go back and change so many things that went wrong over the years. "I think I resented him, he got to keep doing what he loved while I got to go back to the beat and play housewife."

Voight cocked his brow, "Resented as in past tense or resent as in still do? Because from where I'm standing it looks like you still do."

"When are they going to let us see him?" She huffed and crossed her arms over her chest signaling she was done with the conversation and Voight knew better than to push, she divulged only what she wanted and her wall would be firmly put back in place.

Kim sat on the edge of the couch staring at the tiny figure, she brushed the hair from his face and bent to kiss him on the forehead. "Mom?" she felt the little boy who looked like a clone of his father rollover. "Yeah it's me, it's time to go home" she whispered.

"What time is it?" he yawned sitting up to get ready to leave, "Where have you been?"

Kim watched him a moment not quite sure how to deliver the news, she had been thinking about it the past thirty-three hours and couldn't wrap her head around having to actually tell him. She took a deep breath and decided to just go for it, "You know your dad and I had to work a case right?" she wished she could protect him from every single bad thing that could ever happen to him.

"Yeah Sylvie told me but that was a couple days ago" he nodded, still groggy from sleep. "I don't want you to freak out because everything is going to be fine but your dad was hurt pretty bad and he is in the hospital."

"Is he okay?" the tears were already welling in his eyes as he buried his head into Kim, she wrapped her arms around him holding him tight stroking his hair trying to calm the sobs that were already wracking his small body. "He had to have surgery but he will be okay, I promise."

"Hey baby, I need to go back to the hospital, I just haven't seen you in a couple days and I really needed to hug you but you're gonna go have a fun day with Uncle Kevin, okay?"

"No, I want to go see dad" his sniffles making his words almost inaudible. "You can't see him yet but I promise as soon as you can I'll have someone bring you to me." Kim wiped the tears from Liam's face with her sleeve and cupped his face in her hands. "Listen, right now I need you to just remember how much you love your dad and go have a good day because that's what he would want you to do, he wouldn't want you to worry about him when he's lying in a stuffy hospital room."

Adam could feel the pain radiating throughout his entire body and he was cold, colder than he had ever been. He tried to open his eyes but they felt as if they had been superglued shut and there was a distance beeping was driving him insane but if he listened closely enough there was a voice he faintly recognized between the beeps. He strained to hear the voice but the harder he tried the louder the beeping became. He couldn't remember what happened but judging by his current state he knew it couldn't be good, he tried to relax but random images kept appearing: Kim in a skin tight dress, Kim in a truck next to him, Kim mad at him, Kim being drug by her hair. Adam's eyes snapped open at the last image as his memories rushed back, "KIM!"
