Chapter 58
She didn't even know what she had given them. Alex had been very open and had given great details about the things she knew. It was the book she had remembered, the one Peter had her keep in a safe for him and that she had agreed to hand over. After a few phone conversations, it had been sent to Frisco. Over the last three weeks, a lot of little things have been uncovered that might not have been otherwise but it was the banking information Alex did have that had been the goldmine.
Frisco couldn't believe what he was able to find out through Peter's banking history. He had done a good job trying to hide what he was doing with the different accounts, but not good enough. It appears that Peter was the main investor in Cabet's research and he was funnelling most of the required money out of his father's businesses. Faison was funding the plot to knock himself off. Frisco knew it was wrong but a part of him was amused by that, Faison paying for his own execution. The fact Henrick brought Faison in on the last part involving Drew and Jason was devious. Anyone looking into those two patients would believe Faison was the mastermind behind it, not his son or the doctor.
He was pleased that he was about to give someone some very good news this evening. Frisco stepped into the visiting room and Alex looked up at him and grinned, relaxing some seeing him. "Hello again." She didn't know why she had been brought here but seeing him made her hopeful.
"Hello, Alex." Frisco smiled at her then took a seat. "Well, I think you are going to be very happy to hear what I have to say."
Alex perked up some, "The review board met?" she asked excitedly.
Frisco couldn't help but smile seeing the excited look on her face. "After there was evidence uncovered that proved Peter not only manipulated you but actually did some of the things you have been charged with. A special review was called and it was just decided that the charges against Alexandra Devane have been dropped."
"Are you telling me I can leave?"
"Well it might take a day or two to get all the paperwork in order but yes, you are being released."
"This is incredible." Alex couldn't believe she was hearing this. She was going to get out of here, she could have a life again and not on the run. She closed her eyes as she let out a sigh, she gets to be free she thought as a feeling of peace went through her.
"I want to ask something of you," he said, getting her attention again. "When you are released, the WSB, well I want that to stay under wraps for a while. We might need your help with Peter."
Alex looked at him sceptically, just what did he have in mind. Does it really matter, she'll help them, she wouldn't be getting out if it wasn't for their help.
"I have already talked to Anna about this. We want you to stay with her until we can take Peter into custody. We are still building our case but in the last few weeks, we have uncovered a lot. We will be arresting Peter in the not too distant future. We are still uncovering things, adding to the list of charges he will be facing."
Alex nodded as she listened to him, "Why do you want me in Port Charles? Do you want to keep an eye on me? Make sure I don't warn Peter or something. Trust me, I want him to face justice for what he's done."
"No, I know that. We want to keep you hidden for now so people don't know you have been released. Also apparently, Peter has requested another visit with you. I was thinking when the time is right we'll let him see you, right there in Port Charles."
"Why does this sound like something my sister and her favourite partner would dream up?"
"Because I learnt from them," Frisco said with a grin. "I just wanted to give you that news. I will see you again before you are released and more than likely I'll be the one that escorts you to Port Charles. I don't want to take any chances with your safety."
Alex leaned forward, "Do you think I could be in danger? From who?"
Frisco grinned, "I'm just not willing to let anything happen to you on your way to your sister's house. I might be her boss but she'd still kick my ass."
Alex laughed at that, "She seems to have a reputation."
"She's earned it, trust me." He grinned at Alex again then left the room. There was still more work to be done. They were getting closer to having enough to put Peter away for a very long time but there was still more they needed to make their case bulletproof.
…
It was early Friday afternoon, Anna hadn't really been working on anything all day. She couldn't seem to focus. She knew what was the cause and even Robert had already quit working for the day. They had both been cuddled together on the couch when someone had knocked.
"I am so happy that you were able to come," Anna said, hugging Robin by the front door after getting hugs from her grandkids.
"We wanted to come for a visit before school starts again anyway. So when you called we started making arrangements." Emma and Noah had already gone looking for Grandpa.
"I really am glad you're here even if it is only for a couple of days."
"Me too. You look happy," Robin commented as they started walking towards the sitting room.
"I am. Your father is all settled in, we are really enjoying spending time together again. I think the things we were looking into are going to be sorted out soon." Anna put her hand on Robin's arm, a broad smile on her face. "Oh, and did I mention I am now living with the love of my life."
"I did hear that somewhere, yes." Robin smiled when she saw her dad, Noah was already on his lap talking happily to him. Emma was smiling, sitting beside them, explaining a little of what Noah was telling him. "This feels right, coming to see my parents, at the same time because they're together." Robin knew they were happy, even if they were still dealing with whatever Alex and Peter had been up to.
"Hi, sweety," Robert said smiling over at Robin. He was glad they got here today but have to head back Sunday evening. Frisco had told him that Alex will be arriving in Port Charles early Monday morning and they want to get her to Anna's without anyone knowing she was here. That can wait for now though, this weekend that doesn't matter. Robert just wants to enjoy time with his family.
…
Saturday evening found Finn sitting at one of the tables at Charles' with his brother, Chase was talking about Willow and how well things seem to be going between them. Finn was happy for his brother, Willow seems like a very nice woman and they really did seem happy together. It hadn't been as hard as he thought it was going to be to ignore Peter. He didn't really see the man all that often and a quick hello was about all that passed between them if they did run into each other.
Alexis walked in and they smiled at each other as she joined them. Finn was grateful that she'd been there for him lately. They have spent several evenings talking about what he's worried about. Talking about what might happen if Peter finds out they know what he's been doing. Finn doesn't think he is in danger but he could be. Why can't he just go back to his life as a slightly obsessive-compulsive doctor who no one seemed to be overly interested in? He was definitely not cut out to be a part of the spy world.
"Well hello, gentleman. I didn't know I was going to get the pleasure of the company of both of you."
"Actually, I have to get going, this was just my dinner break and Finn was nice enough to join me. Nice seeing you Alexis," Chase said as he got up to leave.
Alexis watched him walk away then asked, "Did I scare him away?"
"No, he really is working. Thanks for coming. What's on your mind this evening?" It was nice that for tonight it was Alexis that needed to talk to him instead of the other way around.
"Why can't I fall for guys I can have relationships with? Why do I have feelings for someone that I can't? I think he does as well, but it is wrong. It's bad." She leaned her elbows on the table putting her head in her hands.
"What's going on?"
Alexis looked up at him, "I know I need to find someone that I can have a healthy relationship with so why," she looked around making sure no one was listening, "am I developing feelings for Neil?"
"Oh, this is about Neil?" Finn knew who she was talking about and why this would be a problem.
"Yeah, oh! I can't be feeling like this about him."
"And here I thought you were going to run off with Jax," Finn joked, hoping to make her smile.
"Ha! No, Jax is just a friend. Neil is no longer my therapist but that doesn't mean we can try having a relationship. He still is Kristina's. Why can't I meet a nice hard working guy who just wants to make me happy and it isn't unethical for me to date?"
"Gee, Alexis you might be setting your expectations a little too high there. Women with baggage from their past seem to be the kind I'm drawn to. Yeah, that's not working out so well for me either."
Alexis laughed at him and smiled, "Maybe you and I should sit out of the dating game for a little while."
"You know, I think that might be a very good idea," he said with a nod. Then they ordered and enjoyed a nice meal together. There was some lighthearted teasing and a few more jokes about their messed up personal lives. It was a nice evening and it made Finn see he was truly grateful to have Alexis as a friend.
…
It was three in the morning when the alarm clock by the bed went off, Robert blindly reached for it to shut it off. "It is far too early for that thing to be making that terrible noise," Anna grumbled from her pillow.
"You can sleep a little longer, Luv." Robert turned and kissed the side of her head.
"No I won't, you are going to pick up Alex. I won't be able to relax until she's here." She rolled and put her chin on his chest, "I wish I could come with you."
"That would defeat the purpose of me being there so it just looks like it's me and you there talking to Frisco if anyone sees us."
"I know. I also know this is going to be the tricky part of this. I just want her here and out of sight. Once she's here I will be more relaxed."
"We will be back here before you have time to miss me," he told her with a grin.
"I'll miss you as soon as you get out of bed." She moved up enough so she could kiss him.
His hand moved up her back, pulling her closer. "Mmmm, this has to wait." He kissed her again, "I will be back in about an hour as long as everything goes like planned. Try to get a little more sleep, alright."
"I'll try but I make no promises." Robert smiled and sat up as she rolled back over, putting her head on the pillow again.
"I'll take it." Then he got out of bed and got dressed quickly. He needed to get to the private airfield just west of town.
After a short drive, Robert parked his car not far from the tarmac to wait. This was going to happen quickly so there was less chance of anyone seeing them. About fifteen minutes after he had arrived a small plane landed. Once it stopped the engines were shut off but no one exited. After another five minutes, a car rolled up beside the plane. The plane door opened as the driver got out of the car and quickly made his way up the steps. Once inside Robert smiled, "Hey Frisco, Alex. Nice to see you, ready to go?"
"Um, yeah. I've enjoyed listening to Frisco here talk about getting to know you and Anna and the many adventures you were all involved in. It's been an interesting couple of days waiting to come here."
"I can just imagine what kind of things this guy's been telling you," Robert said grinning over at Frisco. "We already had plans with Robin, her and the kids were here for a visit, that was the hold-up," he told Alex.
"I didn't mind. A nice hotel, room service, it was a lot better than the other accommodations I've been staying in," Alex joked.
"I'm sure you'll be comfortable at Anna's, you already know your way around there," Robert said with a grin.
"Yes, but I won't be there trying to deceive people." She stepped closer to Robert. "I know I hurt her and that you will always look out for her. Robert, I am here to help. I want to make sure Peter pays for what he did."
"I know you do, I didn't mean anything by that." He turned back to Frisco, "Is there anything else?"
"Nope, I'll be in touch in the next few days. I want this to move quickly once we have the evidence for the warrants."
"Alright, then we should get out of here." There was a bag by the door and Robert picked it up then he followed Alex off the plane. She quickly got in as he put her bag in the back then got in as well. "Let's get out of here."
…
Anna was pacing like Robert knew she would be when they walked in. "It took under an hour, you could have been sleeping," he said as they walked into the sitting room.
"You know I wasn't going to be able to sleep." Anna, still in her robe and pyjamas walked over and hugged Alex. "I'm so glad you're here."
"So am I," Alex said hugging her back.
"I'm going back to bed," Robert said as he left the room carrying Alex's bag upstairs for her.
"Noah may have played Grandpa out this weekend," Anna said as she turned and they started walking towards the stairs as well. "Your room is all ready for you. I think we could all use some more sleep and in the morning we can talk about how this is going to work keeping you out of sight."
"Alright, sleep does sound like a good idea. I think now that I'm here I might actually be able to relax."
"I'm sure you will."
"So I need to know, is it official now, does he live here now?"
"Yes, he had already started moving in before we left but he has finished now and I couldn't be happier to have him here."
"I can see how happy you are now, even tired it's pretty clear."
"We are, this is how it should be." When they got to the top of the stairs Anna showed Alex to her room. "Robin stays in here usually and Noah may have left toys around just so you know to watch out for them. I hope there aren't any to step on. I did tidy up after they left."
Alex watched Anna as she spoke about her family, "How sweet is that? Your little girl gets to see both her parents now when she comes here."
"Robin basically said the same thing," Anna told her with a big smile. She was about to leave the room, "Is there anything else you need?"
"No, if I do it can wait until morning." She paused, "Anna, do you think I could talk to Finn while I'm here? I did something terrible to him and I need to apologize to him in person."
"We can talk about that in the morning."
"Alright. Good night, Anna."
"Night, Alex," Anna said then turned towards her room.
When she walked in Robert was already back in bed, "She settled in for the night?"
"Yeah, I told her we could talk more in the morning."
"There's something else I want to do in the morning, but right now I really want to get some more sleep."
Anna hung up her robe then walked over to the bed, "Me too. I knew I wouldn't sleep without you here so I didn't stay in bed long after you left."
Robert kissed her tenderly, "That doesn't surprise me. Time for sleep now." With his arms around her, she snuggled in, putting her head on his chest. Both of them drift off to sleep easily. Tomorrow is the beginning of the end of this.
A/N: If you've stuck with me this far, thank you. I have hit a few walls while writing this and had to take breaks, but I kept telling myself I had to get back to this story and finish it off. There are still a few more chapters to come but I feel comfortable saying this story will be finished soon with no more long breaks between updates. Thanks for reading and hope you're still enjoying it.
