Thanks to his Flowmotion ability, Sora was able to take Koneko and himself back to Kuoh Academy in no time at all, only stopping in short bursts to look for new nexus points that he could use his ability on. Miraculously, there were no Heartless that appeared along the way, which had Sora confused before pushing that thought at the back of his mind for now. As soon as they reached the academy, Koneko got off his back and uttered a small 'thank you', although she was blushing for some reason.
The two then headed for the old school building, where they proceeded to report their findings to Rias, Akeno, and Yuuto. Needless to say, the information that the pair got from the fallen angel Raynare was more than enough for Rias.
"So that fallen angel, Raynare, had no idea that you were a devil? She thought that you were a human, and that was why she targeted you?" Rias recounted the first thing that Sora explained, which was the reason why Raynare went after him.
"Yep," Sora nodded.
"This doesn't make sense… she should have noticed it when you two first met, we can all clearly sense the aura of a devil coming off of you. There has to be a reason why she couldn't tell you were a devil." Rias shook her head and cupped her chin while in deep thought.
"Well… Raynare did say that she couldn't sense any devil power coming from me. Also… you guys are devils, so obviously you can tell that I'm just like you, because we're the same." Sora said, thinking of a possible answer as well. "Maybe it's because she's a fallen angel that she can't tell?"
Rias listened to his idea and analyzed it thoroughly. "Hmm… that's certainly possible, but what exactly can she sense from you that would give her the idea that you are a human?"
"Isn't Sora's keyblade a weapon of light?" Yuuto spoke up. "He was also using light-based attacks against the Heartless when we first met him, right? Perhaps… even though he's a devil now, he can still utilize light as a weapon and that must have nullified the devil's aura in him in the eyes of that fallen angel. We aren't able to sense the light inside Sora because it's fatal to us, and hence it gives us the impression that Sora is a devil."
Everyone else was left gobsmacked at Yuuto's explanation, even Sora. He had never thought of that, but it actually made sense. His keyblade was able to fight off the light spears that Raynare used against him. He could still use the light inside him as a weapon and he didn't feel any weaker than before, which could only mean that Kiba's words were true.
"Wow, Kiba! I never knew you were so smart! Now I get why Raynare didn't notice that I'm a devil all along!" Sora flashed a shit-eating grin at the young blonde teen.
"You flatter me, Sora. I was only thinking of answer like everyone else." Kiba waved off his compliment with a smile.
"That… could honestly be the answer we need." Rias said with wide eyes, before snapping out of it as she turned towards her newest piece. "Sora, is it possible that you can still use light as a weapon?"
"I think so." Sora put his arms behind him and leaned his head back. "If it was gone, then that would be most of my power leaving me. But I don't feel any weaker than before. And I could still do this." He raised his hand and summoned his keyblade. "Like what Kiba said, my keyblade is a weapon of light. I think this is enough to prove he's right."
"Incredible," Rias commented as Sora put away his keyblade. Everyone else felt the same, looks of awe being present on their faces. "To be able to use light even as a devil without harming yourself… if this is the case, then it means that other weapons of light aren't fatal to you… you are truly one of a kind, Sora."
"Aww, you don't have to say it over and over…" Sora said, scratching his cheek in embarrassment. In all honesty, he was used to people giving him various compliments and praises, but he never let that get into his head. He does get embarrassed if the same people keep on giving him various compliments, though.
"I feel like I need to," Rias winked before reverting back to her serious look. "Alright, now that we know how the fallen angel didn't notice you were a devil, what about the reason why she went after you? What could she want from a 'human' like you?"
The spiky brunette adopted a thinking pose, trying to think of what Raynare wanted from him. "I don't remember much about it, but… I think it was because I had something called a… Sacred—, uh… what was it again…?"
Koneko decided to speak in behalf of him. "The fallen angel wanted to kill Sora-senpai because he had a Sacred Gear."
"Oh yeah, that!" Sora exclaimed, sending a look of thanks towards his kouhai. "Raynare called my keyblade a Sacred Gear. She said that I was a danger to the fallen angels because of the 'Sacred Gear that was sleeping inside me' and then when I summoned my keyblade… she was… surprised that 'I awakened it so quickly'. Come to think of it, what exactly is a Sacred Gear? It's the first time I heard of it."
Rias looked conflicted as she heard Sora's explanation. She had a feeling that the fallen angel targeted her pawn because of that. "I will be honest with you, Sora. At first, I also thought that your keyblade was a Sacred Gear when we first met. I dismissed that thought when I couldn't sense anything from it but now that we know it's a weapon of light, I understand why I can't do such a thing since it would be harmful for a devil like me."
Sora's eyebrows raised ever so slightly at Rias' words, intrigued that the redhead also thought of his keyblade as a Sacred Gear. Just what is a Sacred Gear, anyway? Is it some kind of keyblade or something?
Akeno decided to continue, seeing her friend looking deep in thought about something. "Sacred Gears are basically artifacts given by the Biblical God to humans in order to defend themselves from the three-way war between angels, fallen angels and devils. Sacred Gears can be anything from a simple ring to a giant sword, and they have powerful abilities that can be utilized by the human in possession of them." she explained, adopting a more thoughtful expression. "As far as how Sacred Gears can vary in appearance, your keyblade can be considered as one. It's understandable why that fallen angel and Rias thought of it."
"Huh? But… that's not possible. My keyblade just appeared in my hand out of nowhere when darkness consumed my world… it wasn't given to me by—" Sora stopped in his words as his eyes widened in realization. Raynare's words about him 'awakening' his Sacred Gear filled his mind, which happened when his keyblade also appeared in his hand after summoning it. "Wait a minute… that's exactly how Sacred Gears show up, isn't it?"
"Sacred Gears are normally inborn, and they are considered to be 'sleeping' until they are awakened. From what I read in your Gummiphone, your keyblade didn't appear until your home was shrouded by darkness, meaning that it was 'sleeping' the entire time until that moment." Rias explained, returning to her serious demeanor. "Sora, your keyblade meets all the conditions for it to be considered as a Sacred Gear."
Sora was left utterly confused, even though he understood Rias and Akeno's explanations fairly well. "B-But how…? I'm not even from this world… and my keyblade… it was supposed to be Riku's!" he exclaimed, remembering how his friend took the keyblade from him during his first adventure. "It was supposed to be his… but it chose me in the end… it just doesn't make sense. I wasn't the one born with the keyblade, it just chose me when Riku fell to darkness."
"You're right, Sora. It doesn't make sense, so let's leave this matter to deal with in the future, when we know a lot more about this." Rias sighed, also stumped in trying to figure out a possible explanation. "I have never heard of a Sacred Gear switching to a new host before, so implying that Sora's keyblade is one would be far-fetched. He's right, he's not even from this world too. It would be irrational to dig deeper into this matter."
"There's one more thing you need to know, Rias." Sora spoke in a more serious tone, which got the attention of everybody else since the keyblade wielder wasn't normally like this.
"What is it, Sora?" Rias' brows furrowed in both curiosity and interest.
"Raynare said something about a guy lying to her after she found out that I was a devil. I think that guy was the reason why she targeted me in the first place. He told Raynare that I was a human and a threat to their kind because of my keyblade, or Sacred Gear, or whatever. I'm sure that she got the idea to kill me after that guy told her about me."
"That could just be another one of the fallen angels in town. After all, there are a whole group of them residing in the abandoned church." Rias said, making a bold assumption on the identity of who was behind the attempted murder of her servant.
Sora shook his head and frowned. "No. Raynare said something about a guy in a hood lying to her. That 'guy in a hood' seems to know about me, and during my adventures, there's only one group of people who love to wear hoods along with their black coats."
"Organization XIII," Yuuto clarified with a serious face, remembering what he learned while reading the journal entries in Sora's phone. "But aren't they already gone, Sora? Even if one of them somehow remained alive, how could they have followed you into our world?"
"Beats me." Sora sighed and crossed his arms. "I know they're already gone, but it would explain why the Heartless started to appear in this world. Raynare's heart has also been touched by the darkness, even Koneko-chan saw it. Whoever the guy in the hood is, he's the one behind it."
Three pairs of eyes went towards Koneko, who nodded in agreement with Sora's words. She could still remember how the 'darkness' felt, and it was somehow worse than the aura that belonged to her.
"I have to say, this is a really interesting turn of events, but it's not enough to convince anyone, Sora." Rias sighed into her hands. "Let's be rational, you said it yourself that the Organization is gone, correct? Even if there was some miracle that one of them survived, how could they have crossed worlds like you did? Surely, they can't have used the same power that you did."
"I know…" Sora sighed and slumped his shoulders in defeat. Even he could admit that it was impossible since he witnessed the demise of each member one by one, and there was also the question of how they could even get here. It just seemed impossible to happen with all the circumstances surrounding it.
"Like with the situation regarding your keyblade being a Sacred Gear, let's deal with this matter another time once we get more information on the fallen angels. Don't forget that you are still being targeted by one of them, and that is what we should be focusing on, Sora."
Unable to disagree with Rias' logic, Sora could only nod slowly while looking down. He was still feeling conflicted on who could be that Raynare was referring to, but his leader was right. He was the target of the fallen angels, and he can't let his guard down. "She's right. I can't let myself get distracted here. Whoever's that guy in the hood, I'll deal with him after we take care of —" Sora was then brought out of his inner thoughts when he felt on his shoulder, causing him to look up and see Rias right in front of him.
"Don't dwell on it too much, Sora. You've dealt with much bigger things, right?" Rias told him with a reassuring smile. "We'll figure out who that person is, but we have to deal with that fallen angel and her group first. You can do that, right?"
"Yeah." Sora nodded his head, as a smile slowly formed on his face once again. "And as long as we fight together, we can win!" His answer elicited a pleased smile from the redhead, successful in what she wanted to do, which was to pull Sora from his sad state. Thinking that the 'guy in the hood' was a member of the Organization XIII must have brought back bad memories for the keyblade wielder.
"That's more like it. Now you and Koneko get some rest. After all, you two did good in your mission. We found out about the fallen angels' intentions, and now all we have to do is make sure none of them get to you. I'll be finishing up sorting a few more contracts and then we'll be going home." She then flashed him a smirk. "As a reward for doing such a good job, I'm making something extra special for dinner later on."
Sora's eyes lit up. Ever since he began to live with Rias and Koneko in their apartment last week, breakfast and dinner were always his favorite time of the day. He never knew Rias was so good at cooking, but he wasn't going to complain. It was like eating at Uncle Scrooge's Bistro for free.
"Will do. Thanks, Rias! Your cooking is the best I've ever tasted so far!" Sora gave her his signature grin, making the redhead blush and smile at his compliment just as a familiar voice interrupted them.
"Ara Rias, I hope you don't mind if I sleep over at your apartment for the night." Akeno said with her usual smile, approaching the two. "After hearing that Sora-kun has a fallen angel on his tail trying to kill him, I can't help but be worried about my kouhai. I would like to sleep over at your place to ensure Sora-kun is safe."
"That's okay, Akeno. We still have one more spare room for you, and you still have some of your clothes there from the last time you slept over. You can spend the night at the apartment." Rias said, smiling at her friend.
"Woah, so it's gonna be a sleepover! I love sleepovers!" Sora exclaimed, clenching his fists and bringing them close to his chest. He remembered the peaceful days back in Destiny Islands where him, Riku, and Kairi have had numerous sleepovers in each other's houses. "We'll be happy to have you over, Akeno! Tonight's gonna be fun!"
"I'm sure it will be fun, Sora-kun." Akeno said, bringing her hand to her cheek. "Ara ara, I can't wait to cook for all of you later on… I already have something in mind that I'm sure Sora-kun will love~"
"Now, now, Akeno…" Rias waved her off, her smile straining slightly. "You are a guest, and it would be unfair for you to cook when you are only staying for a night. Plus, I'm already planning to cook something special for Sora later on. I'll be the one to cook dinner for the four of us."
"Oh, but I insist." Akeno smirked and turned towards Sora, whose grin already disappeared at the sight of the raven-haired girl's sweet smile. It truly made him feel uncomfortable. "You, Sora-kun, and Koneko-chan have had a long day already. You should take a rest with them, Rias. I'm sure Sora-kun wouldn't mind the taste of something more delicious than what you had in mind."
"Is that a challenge I hear, Akeno?" Rias asked, narrowing her eyes dangerously at her friend. "Did you just imply that you can cook better than me? I'll have you know that Sora enjoyed every meal that I prepared for him and Koneko for a week and it won't change. He obviously likes my cooking better, therefore I will prepare dinner tonight."
"Oh my dear, Rias. I didn't imply anything. I can cook better than you." Akeno retorted with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I'm sure Sora-kun wouldn't mind a little change in who prepares food for him…"
As the two kept bickering on who would cook dinner for tonight, Sora could only look at them with a massive sweat-drop. How did this conversation even turn from a talk about sleepovers into a battle of cooking skills? And why were they even fighting about who gets to cook dinner? They could just work together, right? Sora was actually about to tell them that they could work together and he could even help, before ultimately deciding against it.
"Something tells me I shouldn't be anywhere near Rias and Akeno for now…" he thought with a nervous smile, taking a step back from the two friends who continued to argue. Sora had never dealt with this kind of situation before, and he knew better than to make a girl angry after his first meeting with Rias. Yeah, he couldn't remember a time where two girls were fighting over him, more so on the topic of cooking.
Fortunately, his saving grace came in the form of Koneko, who was poking his back in order to get his attention.
Koneko looked up at the spiky brunette while holding his Gummiphone for him to see. It was a known habit for her by now to borrow Sora's phone whenever he was at the clubroom, and the young boy had no problem with that. He actually found it cute and was always delighted to answer whatever question Koneko has for him about what she reads in Jiminy's journal.
Though, he didn't really know why she kept on sitting on his lap every time. Surprisingly, he didn't think it was weird of her to do such a thing, but it did embarrass him that a cute little girl would sit on his lap like it was a normal thing.
"Senpai, can you teach me how to play this?" Koneko asked with a pleading look (which Sora could admit was his weakness), and the keyblade wielder quickly took his phone to see what his kouhai had a problem with.
It was one of the Classic Kingdom games that he acquired in his third adventure, 'Mickey, the Mail Pilot'. Sora grinned, remembering how fun and challenging this game was, even though his personal favorite was 'The Karnival Kid'. It brought a smile to his face to see Koneko having these as he did.
"Oh, this is easy, Koneko-chan! Come on, I'll teach it to you. You're gonna love this one, I'm sure!" he exclaimed, leading the white-haired loli towards the couch, who flashed a rare smile at her senpai's irresistible demeanor before taking her rightful place on his lap.
Today wasn't such a bad day, after all.
(Abandoned Church)
Raynare was having a bad day. First, she attempted to end the life of a prime target after having a somewhat entertaining date with him, only to backfire when he awakened his Sacred Gear out of nowhere and fought back on even grounds.
How did he even awaken it in so little time? And he even knew how to use a strange sword like that as though he had experience…
Second, she finds out that her target, whose name was Sora, was actually a devil all along. That was something that shocked her to the core, since she didn't sense any ounce of devil power within him the whole time they were together, including last week. That gave her the impression that the boy was only an innocent human and she had the utmost confidence to pull off a job well done by the end of the day…
...and it backfired.
Landing on the entrance of the church, Raynare stomped over towards the altar, where a black figure was sitting on one of the chairs in a nonchalant manner, his one leg crossing over the other.
"Miss Raynare, were you successful in your mission?" asked a blue-eyed girl whose blonde hair was styled in twin short ponytails and had a black bow as an accessory. She was wearing a Gothic Lolita outfit that consisted of a black dress with white frills and a large black bow. Covering her legs were thigh-high socks and black shoes. If it wasn't for the fact that she had black wings sprouting out of her back, she would be considered a loli maid mainly due to her outfit alone. Her name was Mittelt.
"Out of my way." Raynare growled, not even paying any heed to the young blonde girl who pouted at being brushed just like that.
"You seem to be in a bad mood. I take it your mission didn't end well?" came the voice of another woman, who looked noticeably older than the two. She had a buxom figure with long navy blue hair and brown eyes. She was a violet top with a wide collar, a matching miniskirt and black heels. Her top was unbuttoned until it reached her cleavage, exposing some skin and it showed the necklace that hung around her neck. Her name was Kalawarner.
"I said, out of my way!" Raynare shouted, anger and frustration evident in her voice.
Kalawarner merely smirked in amusement at seeing her fellow fallen angel in this state. She was quite smug about killing a harmless, innocent boy on her mission and stated it would be 'a piece of cake', so seeing her like this must have meant she failed… horribly. The blue-haired fallen started to wonder what could have been the cause of Raynare's failure.
"You lied to me!" Raynare continued to stomp over towards the black figure, glaring daggers at him before stopping just within inches from the chair where he was sitting at. "You told me that boy was a human, but he was a devil all along! Not only that, but he has already awakened his Sacred Gear and he's likely reporting our little encounter to the leader of the devils in this area! Give me one good reason why I shouldn't kill you right now!"
(Play - "Organization XIII")
"You got your ass handed to you by a kid?" the figure replied, looking unaffected by her threat at the very least. "Guess that's what you get for being a smug bitch."
"Don't patronize me!" Raynare clenched her fists before pointing towards him accusingly. "It doesn't change the fact that you lied to me about him being a human!"
The figure scoffed before waving her off. "As if. I told you he was a human a week ago, and he was. The day when the kid became a devil, I tried to pass it to you as advice, but you said that you had it under control. I told you not to underestimate him too, but you clearly did. So don't pin the blame on me, Miss fallen angel. You brought this on yourself."
Raynare's glare intensified, but she didn't argue back because she knew it was true. After learning that Sora was only a human, Raynare was confident enough to the point that she denied any help from anyone, including the black figure before her. All she had to do was to lure the spiky brunette into going on a date with her where she could kill him afterwards, but that didn't work out well. In the end, her pride was shattered and she didn't want to accept it.
"What's that kid's Sacred Gear, anyway…?" Raynare grumbled, trying to steer the conversation somewhere else. "It looked like some kind of giant key that he can summon out of nowhere. He could even block my light spears with it…"
The figure let out a dry laugh. "Heh. Since you didn't heed my advice when you needed it the most, I'm not gonna tell you what it is exactly. That's what you get for being smug bitch, Miss fallen angel."
"At least call me by my name…" she huffed, causing the two other fallen angels behind her to snicker in amusement.
"Whatever. What I can tell you is that the kid's Sacred Gear…" the figure stood up and faced the three fallen angels. He was a wearing a black coat with a hood covering his face. "...isn't like any other useless trash out there like the Twice Critical. The kid is special, and you'll see it for yourselves soon enough. Don't underestimate him again."
Raynare narrowed her eyes. Her pride was damaged now, but she could at least gain it back on her next attempt. Plus, this was just a minor inconvenience to her real plan, anyway. Once their guest arrives in this town, she would be able to end Sora's life as well as the devils that are siding with him.
The raven-haired fallen angel darted her eyes to the left and right, noticing that they were one short. "Where's Donhaseek? Wasn't he supposed to watch over this place?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"That old coot? Well, unlike you, he decided to accept the little help I offered him." the hooded figure answered, just as a pair of Shadows appeared beside him, causing the three fallen angels to widen their eyes.
"W-What are you planning?" Raynare demanded, scowling at the hooded figure. They didn't know who this guy was, and he might be a danger to their real plan if he had some hidden intentions.
The figure shrugged his shoulders. "Nothing. I'm just here for the show. Now you three ladies just sit back and watch how the kid works."
(Stop playing - "Organization XIII")
And there we go. Nothing much happened except for a few revelations. Is the keyblade a Sacred Gear or what? It doesn't seem like one, but the guy in the end says it is. What does this mean? Speaking of which, you should know by now who the guy in the hood is, because it is obvious as hell. Next chapter should be interesting.
If you didn't get it, Raynare wasn't able to sense that Sora was a devil because of the light inside him. The light nullifies his devil aura and makes him seem 'human' in the eyes of a fallen angel. However, devils can clearly tell that Sora is a devil because they can't sense the light in him, which is harmful to their kind.
Goodbye... and good night! BANG! *too sweet gesture*
